Today I'm grateful to be joined by my very good friend Darren Scanlon, a man who turned his life around and is now living proof of the power of determination and community. Darren opens up about how he faced the harsh reality that if he didn't change his health, drinking habits, and lifestyle, he wouldn't live long enough to see his kids grow up. That realization sparked his journey to transformation. He found inspiration through Andy Ramage's One Year No Beer and joined several hiking groups, where he built strong connections and found his tribe. These communities were key in helping him stay sober and rebuild his life. Today, Darren is eight years sober and thriving. He even ran the Dublin Marathon in 2024, proving that with the right mindset and support, anything is possible. This episode is about resilience, mental health, personal growth, and the importance of surrounding yourself with people who lift you up. You can follow Darren and his inspiring journey on Instagram at @the_sober_hiker. Be sure to check out his page for more on his hikes, sobriety journey, and the amazing work he's doing with the Celbridge Boys Club.

Andy discusses his personal experience of transitioning from a high-paced, alcohol-fuelled lifestyle to one focused on health, fitness, and personal growth. He highlights the importance of building healthy habits, setting goals, and staying committed to change, as well as emphasising the significance of overcoming ambivalence towards alcohol and creating a compelling future without it. KEY TAKEAWAYS Encouraging the adoption of healthy behaviours and habits, such as exercise and journaling, can create a positive loop of motivation and success. Recognising that setbacks and failures are a natural part of the journey towards change can help individuals bounce back stronger and continue on their path. By setting clear goals and values, individuals can train their brains to filter out information that aligns with their aspirations, leading to more focused and purposeful actions. Utilising alcohol-free alternatives in social situations can help individuals feel more comfortable and confident while socialising without alcohol. BEST MOMENTS "Life had plateaued a little bit. I'd got early onset heart disease I'd just discovered. My relationships were somewhat strained and it was a real awakening of Actually, what are we all doing? This is nuts." "I think it's ambivalence, that love-hate relationship in our brain with alcohol, which most people carry. So there's that moment of awareness of, actually, I think this is not serving me anymore." "When we can get so caught up in the steps, and that is a necessary part of it, like you say, you have to do the work, but you also have to switch your mind on to what's important." Over the past five years, it's been incredible to see how the alcohol-free landscape has changed. Pubs, restaurants and supermarkets boast a range of appealing 0% options. We're seeing a rise in AF communities, influencers, bars and events. There has been a marked cultural shift towards acceptance of not drinking – and that's in no small part down to today's guest.Andy Ramage is one of the world's leading alcohol-free performance coaches. Since his first appearance on this podcast, in 2019, countless listeners have got in touch to share how they've transformed their lives by giving up alcohol.Andy co-founded the One Year No Beer movement and recently co-created the Dryy app and AF community. Collectively, these innovations have helped hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of what he calls ‘middle lane' moderate drinkers transform their health and happiness. He is also the author of two best-selling books - The 28 Day Alcohol Free Challenge and Let's Do This, and is one of only a few coaches to hold a Masters degree in coaching psychology and positive psychology. Many of us discover alcohol as a teenager. We start to believe we can't socialise, dance or talk to strangers without it – and we carry these myths with us long into adulthood. We think others will find us boring if we don't drink. Hangovers become a celebrated end to a ‘great night out'. And we play down negative effects such as risky behaviour, poor sleep, low mood or junk food cravings.Andy is passionate about reversing all these beliefs and behaviours. He explains his ‘ambivalence seesaw' – a framework you can use to work out your current relationship with alcohol and start to shift it. We discuss why moderation isn't a good tactic, why Dry January often fails, and why slip-ups are part of the learning process. And he shares some valuable advice on coping with social pressure to drink, and cultivating a kinder self-talk. I've not drunk alcohol myself for four or five years now and I can honestly say there's not a moment when I miss it. But like Andy, I'm not here to judge anyone else, simply to encourage you to try out the benefits we've both felt. Andy is motivated, passionate and full of positivity, and someone who describes a life without alcohol, as a gift to yourself. He has managed to transform his own health, happiness and relationships and wants to inspire you to do the same.Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Through the years, I've maintained transparency about my journey with alcoholism—a label I've embraced in the solitude of self-discovery. However, this characterization doesn't resonate with most individuals. The majority of drinkers engage in a marginally excessive indulgence in alcohol. While this behavior may not be catastrophic in the traditional sense, it does raise discernible concerns. The persistent hangovers, lethargy, and resulting melancholy it begets become tiresome. The desire to desist is tangible, but the seamless integration of alcohol into social and professional settings renders the prospect of abstention seemingly insurmountable. Today's guest found himself ensnared within precisely this behavior pattern. Ruari Fairbairns is a former oil broker from London who—after a falling out with booze—decided it was time to put the plug in the jug. The benefits were so profound that he later walked away from his career in finance to become a full-time advocate for an alcohol-free lifestyle. Ruari, alongside collaborator Andy Ramage (featured in episode 444 in 2019), co-founded a pioneering institution, One Year No Beer, in 2015, a subscription-based bastion of sobriety with over 100,000 global members. Beyond his role as co-founder, Fairbairns co-authored the UK bestseller The 28-Day Alcohol-Free Challenge. He also co-hosts the One Year No Beer Podcast, guiding listeners on a journey of wisdom and sobriety. In this episode, we delve into the gradual transformation of society's relationship with alcohol, dissecting the negative repercussions on both mind and body. We explore the need for heightened awareness around alcohol, challenging the traditional narrative and embracing a healthier relationship with it. Ruari guides us through compelling discussions on stress, trauma, ADHD, emotional sobriety, and the pivotal role of community in the transformative journey. As we welcome the New Year and the possibilities it presents, I offer this conversation as an encouragement to consider the many ways in which alcohol continues to interfere with your health, hopes, and dreams. Andy Ramage had the boyhood dream to be a professional footballer and although that did come true his playing career was cut short due to an injury. As he grew older he noticed alcohol playing a bigger and bigger role in his life. At first, Andy began exploring areas of his life he would like to change but was not getting the results he wanted. The last rock he lifted and explored was saying goodbye to alcohol. Andy discovered he was in the middle lane of the drinking spectrum, not an alcoholic but not a non-drinker. With 10+ years of alcohol-free living, Andy shares his story on the Sober Motivation podcast. ------------

I am passionate about summits. Summits offer a unique opportunity to learn from many different experts all at once. Since 2018, when I discovered This Naked Mind through a summit, I have signed up and attended many summits; some about business, some about health and wellness and some just for fun! But, until this year, there hasn't been one about becoming and living an alcohol-free life. Meet Maggie Klassens, the founder and presenter of The Sober Summit. I am so excited that someone is offering a summit that brings together many of the amazing voices in the AF and sober community. The first Sober Summit was in April of this year (2023), and now Maggie is bringing us The Sober Summit: Holiday Edition. And, just in time to help all of us thrive through the holiday season! I met Maggie in Portland, Maine in September and I knew I had to have her on the podcast to share this amazing resource. Listen in as Maggie shares some of the topics and the incredible speakers that are in the lineup. William Porter, Andy Ramage, Victoria English, Chris Marshall and more will share everything from pairing NA beverages with your holiday meals to looking for glimmers, to understanding boundaries and staying active during the holidays. The best part is that the series is free. You can listen each day at no cost and there is even a bonus replay weekend to enjoy anything you might miss during the summit. The speakers have incredible resources they will be sharing with those who attend the summit and you can purchase the recordings for a low one-time cost if you choose. The doors to the summit open today (link below) and I encourage each of you to take advantage of this resource and to support Maggie's mission to further the conversation about living and thriving in the sober world! I think you will be impressed by the lineup Maggie has in store for you and by Maggie herself, who decided to take her passion for living AF and share it with all of us! On this week's episode, we speak to the creator of One Year No Beer, Andy Ramage. Ramage, a casual drinker, woke up one day and wondered what life would be like if he stopped drinking for a year. And it did more for him than dieting, working out, or meditating. In fact, it changed the way he looked at life forever. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Gabby's guest this week is a comedian, writer, and TV presenter, and he's also turning the midlife crisis on its head! For Lee Mack, the midlife crisis is more like the midlife question mark: a time when you question some of the ways you've been told to live. Lee shares why things like meditation, veganism, and sobriety, have become increasingly important to him at the midpoint, as well as why he loves time off more and more but would trade it all for a shot at playing football for FC Barcelona! Entrepreneur and behaviour change coach, Andy Ramage, also joins to talk about how he is helping people who want to take a break from drinking alcohol. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
If you're listening to this podcast, I'm going to assume that you either want to quit drinking or you already have. For those who want to quit drinking there are typically two camps. Those who think of themselves as alcoholics and everyone else. I got sober in a time when AA was really the only program available, and people who went were facing a serious problem. Nowadays, there are all kinds of programs that help people stop drinking no matter where they fall on the addiction spectrum. This episode will focus on the moderate or “middle lane drinkers”. And the perfect guest to talk about how to help those people is Andy Ramage. He was the co-founder of “one year no beer”, he's the author of two books: “The 28 Day Alcohol-Free Challenge: Sleep Better, Lose Weight, Boost Energy, Beat Anxiety” and “Let's Do This!: How to use motivational psychology to change your habits and change your life” and Founder of The Arete Way Coaching Certification Program. I have to say, Andy is different. He is special. He is so full of excitement and enthusiasm, that his energy is totally contagious. So contagious in fact that I have decided to partner with him.. There is a coaching certification program starting in October, that I myself will be participating in, so if you feel like your current career is no longer fulfilling, or you are looking to do something that is more in line with your authentic self, then check out his course. I will leave an affiliate link in the show notes at odaatchat.com. If you do decide that you'd like to get certified, I'm offering a special bonus to help you create your first coaching offer. Because after you get certified, you'll need a magnetic website that tells people how you can help. Honestly, online marketing has been one of my favorite obsessions over the last 20 years, so I got you covered! Andy's story is really amazing, he's a lot of fun and is super smart. I can't wait for you to meet him, so without further ado, please enjoy this episode with Andy. Connect with Andy here: Visit Website: Andy Ramage Coaching Subscribe So You Don't Miss New Episodes! In this episode we chat to Sarah Chamberlain, the Global Head of Arete Coach which is the coaching course that Ben recently completed and that Shaz has just started! Sarah talks to us about her journey with alcohol and how it all started in the 90s with ladette culture - drinking like the lads can drink, drinking the same drinks that the lads were drinking, keeping up with the lads on a night out - this was all part of the culture for young women at the time and alcohol was a huge part of their identity. Sarah also talks about how her AF journey hasn't been a simple, linear one - she's got a good number of alcohol-free stints under her belt, and makes the point that you learn and grow every time you have an AF stint. Of course, she also talks to us about the Arete Coach course (which gives those who complete it a Diploma in Positive Coaching) and why she's so proud to work with Andy Ramage to shape and deliver it. Coaches, want to live a limitless life and help your clients do the same?Andy Ramage is an advocate for the alcohol-free community. He stopped drinking 10 years ago and it changed his life for the better. Now he wants to inspire others to do the same. In this episode he defines a middle lane drinker as someone who drinks averagely, heavily, moderately or not at all, which is around 70% of the adult population in the Western world.Andy believes that taking a break from alcohol can have a transformative effect on one's life. The conversation in this episode is about the fitness industry's all-or-nothing mentality and how it relates to alcohol. Andy shares about how he started drinking at 13 in order to fit in and how that led to a problematic relationship with alcohol. He explains how it felt like an elixir to fit in and how society's marketing and adults in their life made it seem like a great thing. After getting injured at 20, he fell into the world of the stock market and without competitive sports in his life, he felt that alcohol was his go-to for settling social anxiety. This connection between social settings and drinking stayed strong throughout his life. This conversation is about the influence of social environments on drinking habits. Andy explains how he found himself in a very social drinking environment when it came to entertaining clients, as well as spending time with friends and family. Though it was not excessive compared to his peers, it was still too much to lead a limitless life as he does today. He emphasizes that what many people consider normal or moderate behavior is far from acceptable in terms of alcohol consumption. He explains that his story is important and should be heard by the 70% of the adult population who are in the middle lane of drinking, which means sometimes drinking moderately, sometimes heavily, and sometimes not at all.You are going to love this episode!HIGHLIGHTSAnd so for me, I want my kids to be around an environment where they have to really go the extra mile to make that conscious choice where the choice becomes so conscious and it's not accidental. The alcohol-free revolution is now you are gonna look like you are miles ahead of the game, even now miles ahead of the game by introducing this into your coaching, into your training. If you are interested in, in performance and wellness, for me, foundationally a break from alcohol's gotta live in that package, hasn't it? It's gotta be in there with your meditations and your ice baths and your exercise and your nutrition. You want the, the best performance, you wanna get the best results and, and this is the secret sauce for any of the trends listening. All of your clients will get better results. In terms of the training side, I think if you can live and breathe that message, and again, it has to be part of your story, but if it is part of your story, live and breathe that message and see the results that you get and talk about the consistency that you now have, I think is a great place to start.Don't forget to leave a review on Apple Podcasts.About Today's Guest Andy is a former professional athlete, who following an injury which cut short his career, went on to co-create two multimillion-dollar city brokerages. Days left on earth: 17511We are so busy doing, getting stuff done, rushing, getting through it - for what? In the hope that one day life will slow down and we can experience its wonders? But this is to assume you only experience the wonder and beauty of life when you have your to-do list is done, financial freedom, promotion, retirement…Most people are living this way. Dreaming of a perfect tomorrow that might never arrive. Climate change, AI doomsday, war, and sickness are all possibilities. So why wait? Why push your happiness, joy and wonder off into an uncertain future? What about your bank wonder, joy and happiness right now?The raindrop, hot cup of coffee, hug, oak tree, bird song, children playing…Wonder is not in some far-off land, it is now. You just have to look for it.Here's my glimpse of paradise on earth: Waking up my Ruby and her saying, ‘Love you dad'What's yours?Check out my socials:linktr.ee/andyramage
Days Left On Earth: 17512A life without problems would be horrifically dull. Yet no one welcomes obstacles. But what if your challenges are specifically designed to make you stronger? I like how Thomas Merton describes it, “Souls are like athletes that need opponents worthy of them. If they are to be tried and extended and pushed to the full use of their powers.” The universe is testing you. Do you want what resides on the other side of the obstacle?HappinessSuccessJoyRelief Peace LoveConnection…If so, the barricade is not a reason to give up, it is a sign to push on.Or as Marcus Aurelius, arguably the last great Roman Emperor, penned in his private journal, known as the meditations:“The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way”Today meet your obstacles with a smile.Thank you, Ryan Holiday, ‘The Obstacle Is The Way' for the inspiration.
Days left on earth: 17516Earning £38 per week as a football apprentice was the wealthiest I ever felt. Living at home with no bills, with everything taken care of by my lovely mum and dad, all I had to do was play football and afford the odd night out.Driving a beat-up Ford Fiesta that you could start with a house key, with no heating, so I had to wear ski gloves in winter - I felt like a million dollars. Then a few years later, I earned a million dollars and felt trapped and overwhelmed by living expenses. I know this is ridiculous. But it's so many people's stories. The numbers will differ, but the sensation of feeling trapped by a desire for more is universal. But there is a skilful way out that takes a ton of courage. You stop to “actually” smell the roses. This does not mean you stop trying to be successful or earn money. I enjoy both. But you stop trying to find happiness in what you don't have. And start feeling grateful for what you do have right now.A hug with a loved oneThe cup of tea made with love.Cuddles with a pet.Laughs with friends. These moments create happiness but are too often missed trying to earn more money to be happy! So today, focus on one thing that brings you joy in your life. Here's mine - A cup of coffee while I write these words.Check out my socials:linktr.ee/andyramage
Days Left On Earth: 17519We live like we're immortal under the assumption that there will be enough' time when we might not wake up tomorrow. The brutal reality is all around us, yet we often choose to ignore it until it's too late.A top regret of the dying, according to Bronnie Ware, is, "I wish I had not worked so hard."Ware's words are not pessimistic. They are joyous.Living under a false assumption of a guaranteed tomorrow means we miss the bliss in the present. These are not throw-away platitudes; our happiness lives in our ability to pause to smell the coffee. Here is a radical idea. What if every day was a lifetime? How would you live it?Would you hug your loved ones and breath the feeling into your bones?Perhaps you would savour a moment in nature or stop to smell the roses?A conversation with a loved one might take on a whole new dimension if it were your last.Or the small talk with a stranger might be enthused with loving energy that leaves a glow.If today is your lifetime, how will you live it?

In this episode we chat to the AF legend, Andy Ramage! Andy is over 8 years alcohol-free himself and when he decided to rethink his drinking, the AF landscape was very different. Andy is a pioneer of the idea that, as he calls them, "middle lane drinkers" can see the benefits of giving up alcohol no matter where they are on the drinking scale - and once he ditched booze for good himself, so many things changed for him both personally and professionally. This is part of my re-release series and was first aired in 2019. How does alcohol fit into your life? Have you ever given it any thought? My guest on this week's podcast is Andy Ramage, a performance coach and author. He's also one of the founders of One Year No Beer, a habit-changing programme that invites people to try 28, 90 or 365 days alcohol free – and see what it does for them. Andy was like many of us, he was not an alcoholic but he was what he calls ‘a middle lane drinker'. He would drink a little bit to unwind, at work events, when he saw his friends and probably a little bit more on the weekends. Andy started off on a 30 day trial without alcohol and now hasn't drunk any alcohol for six years and says he can't envisage doing so again. But his agenda is not to make you stop drinking for good. It's to demonstrate that taking a break from the booze can bring a surprising host of benefits, even if you don't think of yourself as a problematic drinker. Andy and I delve into just what some of those benefits might be. We discuss how alcohol is so ingrained in our social lives and often our work culture that often we don't even consider what life would be like without it. It's linked to every part of our lives from relaxation and fun to social bonding or even just relieving boredom. We talk about societal expectations and peer pressure and both of us share our own individual stories and our own journeys with alcohol. Finally, Andy shares some brilliant, practical tips to help anyone who maybe considering tactical break from alcohol. This is a really inspiring conversation. Whether you're already thinking of cutting down, it's not something you've considered, or even if you're already abstaining, I hope you'll find some life-enhancing lessons in this podcast. The focus of the first series of the podcast was about how people find meaning and purpose. The major insight was that most people find their meaning after a fall or stumble in life. And this is exactly how I found my purpose. Stopping drinking was a major social and business hurdle for me and the learning provided has filled my life with meaning. The second series of the podcast will focus on my alcohol-free heroes. Those brave and courageous AF-adventurers who help inspire people take a break and transform their lives. For me, going alcohol-free is the ultimate life and performance tool and my hope is that this series will inspire, motivate and encourage even more people to join me on the fun side of the island!
Episode 2. LIVE: HELP I've lost my motivationDon't panic, it happens to us all. I clearly remember writing my second book, “Let's Do This”, which is all about the science of motivation and thinking - I need some bloody motivation to finish this book, if only there was a book I could read” haha! It's true. We all lose our mojo at times, so I want you to know, it's not your fault. So don't worry if you have lost some momentum. The key is to start back nice and easy and work your way up.BJ Fogg, not to be confused with Phileas, founder of the Stanford behaviour design lab, suggests you, “Take your aspirations and break them down into tiny behaviours”So you start really small. This is the opposite of what most people do, this is why I like the way Fogg's mind works.Rather than going all in.Start so small that no matter what your level of motivation you simply have to do it.If you want to find your motivation to go jogging again.Put your gym kit on, open the door, breathe in the fresh air then sit back down again. That's it.The next day at the same time, put your kit on and walk outside then come back in again. The following day walk to the top of the street then increase it daily by another street. After a week you are still in the ridiculously easy territory that with almost no motivation you can keep showing up.However something powerful has changed. You are forming a habit. The distance is irrelevant. What's important is that at the same time each day your brain and body are getting ready to move. The fact that you started tiny, allowed you to start showing up.The showing up is more important than the distance. All of a sudden a habit is forming, which requires little motivation as now its running on autopilot.Sounds too simple, but we are simple creatures, so try it. Let me know if you found your mojo, by joining me on my LIVE show “The Funside of the Island with Andy Ramage” which you join every day at 07:15 am BST by following @andyamageoffical on FB, Instagram and on YT search for Andy Ramage. For more about the courses I run, to sign up to my exclusive newsletter and to train with me to become a double accredited coach visit - https://www.andyramage.com/Follow me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/andyramageofficial/Follow me on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/AndyRamageOfficialFollow me on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0JLhw07WzjORzldDmta5kQThank you to our sponsors https://athleticgreens.com/andyramageFor more about the courses I run, to sign up to my exclusive newsletter and to train with me to become a double accredited coach visit - https://www.andyramage.com/Follow me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/andyramageofficial/Follow me on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/AndyRamageOfficialFollow me on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0JLhw07WzjORzldDmta5kQ
