Says Rodney: “There are a number of fascinating people who pass through Cape Town and I've always felt there to be a need for a programme that allows an in-depth discussion with these personalities. Fine Music Radio has a veritable treat for you on Christmas Day. The guest on People of Note on Sunday is probably the most famous guest Rodney Trudgeon has interviewed - the internationally famous conductor MARIN ALSOP. Classic FM in London voted Marin Alsop as one of the top 18 conductors of all time. Quite an accolade because others on the list include Karajan, Abbado, Klemperer and Bernstein. In fact Marin was a pupil of Bernstein's and then had to fight an immense battle to conquer the male dominated world of conductors. Marin was in Cape Town to conduct the Mzanzi Orchestra in Beethoven's 9th.

On People of Note this week, Rodney Trudgeon will be talking to the outgoing manager of Fine Music Radio, Mark Jennings who has decided to go to England with his wife to be with his children. Mark became station manager of FMR in 2015 after nearly 40 years of having lived, worked and slept radio. Not only did Mark introduce live broadcasts of the Symphony Concerts from the Cape Town City Hall, but he also worked tirelessly to ensure FMR's survival during the Covid pandemic.

The 16th of September marked the death in 1977 of one of the world's most famous and iconic singers, Maria Callas. Fine Music Radio has been paying tribute to her in a series that was presented by Anton Smit over the past 2 weeks and in People of Note this week, we'll be repeating an interview which I recorded with Robert Sutherland who was Maria Callas's chosen accompanyist for many years.
