Jessica Knoll joins Carol Fitzgerald to discuss her latest novel, BRIGHT YOUNG WOMEN, which is a Bookreporter Bets On selection. It's a fictitious look at the victims of a serial killer, based on Ted Bundy, though he is never called by name here. Jessica talks about the structure of the novel, where the crimes that open the book are captured hour by hour and day by day. She explores the three characters in the book, as well as the research that she did to get the right tone and tenor for the story. Jessica realizes that if the victims had survived, they would be in their 50s and 60s today. She also touches on the television series adaptation that she has been tapped to write, as well as her experience with the film adaptation of LUCKIEST GIRL ALIVE. On this episode of Complicated Conversations we are thrilled to welcome back one of our favorites, Jessica Knoll! Jessica is the New York Times best-selling author of The Favorite Sister and Luckiest Girl Alive, which she adapted and executive produced for the screen. Jessica's highly-anticipated new novel, Bright Young Woman, is a fictional reimagining of the final murderous spree of our country's most famous serial killer.  We chat with Jessica about how this book is the result of a “rage epiphany” and proposes a new narrative – that the so-called brilliant and charismatic man behind these acts was actually incredibly average – and that it was the women whose lives were cut short who were the exceptional ones. Jessica discusses the bright young women of her novel – which one helped her work through issues within herself; how these women leaned on each other and saved one another; the ways in which victims are always blamed; and how important it was for her to make clear that women were never fooled by this man. We also talk about grief and finding purpose from loss. We couldn't let Jessica go without also covering some Bravo content too! Bright Young Women is out now and it's amazing! In today's episode, Amanda drinks some red wine with actors, writers, directors Aisha Evelyna and Dani Pagliarello to discuss creative inspiration, which fellow Astro sign celebs they'd invite to dinner, and new series The Drop!   The Drop is about the accidental friendship sparked by the hustle of professional line-waiting between diabetic American escapee, Zara, and Canadian wannabe influencer, Polly. With Zara working illegally and Polly showing her the ropes, the pair are rising in the ranks as Toronto's premier line-waiting duo who stand in line for exclusive luxury product drops, ranging from limited edition Jordans, the latest tech gadgets, and even…”Bottled Air, Trademark.” You can watch all the episodes on Narcity's YouTube channel.   Aisha and Dani are both actors, writers, and directors currently based out of Toronto. They also happen to be the co-creators and stars of Narcity's first scripted series The Drop, where the hustle of professional line-waiting sparks the accidental friendship of diabetic American escapee, Zara (played by Dani), and Canadian wannabe influencer, Polly (played by Aisha), working their way up in Toronto's premier line-waiting scene.   In her work, Aisha is passionate about bringing stories of the underrepresented to the forefront of our social consciousness. Aisha was a participant of the 2022 Canadian Academy's Writers Program where she developed the limited series SALLY with Warner Brothers Canada. Her short film ALEX, which she wrote, directed, and starred in, premiered at Holly Shorts and was an Official Selection at the Austin Film Festival. In addition to The Drop, you can see Aisha acting on-screen in Rabbit Hole on Paramount+ and Slo Pitch on OutTV.   Dani is a recipient of the Independent Production Fund's development and packaging program this year for her new series Trauma Bonding, a comedy about a psychiatrist who, after losing her practice, continues to treat patients… from her car. Dani's showrunning is reflective of the work she loves to see on screen - women directing high-quality comedy. "Now it's time for Halloween Ends, Halloween Ends, Halloween Ends — Empire Podcast!" Yes, folks, Halloween is just around the corner and with it, the debut of Halloween Ends, David Gordon Green's conclusion to the retconned sequel trilogy that continues the story that began so memorably in John Carpenter's Halloween. That, of course, introduced the world to Michael Myers and one Jamie Lee Curtis as his nemesis, Laurie Strode, and now, over forty years on, Curtis returns to the pod for the third year in a row to have a chat with Amon Warmann about saying goodbye to Laurie, about a possible Knives Out return, and about rapping to and for Michelle Yeoh. Our other guest this week is one of our favourite British actors (and also, as the star of The Haunting Of Hill House and The Invisible Man, someone with a background in horror), the brilliant Oliver Jackson-Cohen, who talks to Ella Kemp about his new movie, Emily, about speaking French on screen, and much, much more. Then, in the podbooth this week, Chris Hewitt is joined by Helen O'Hara, Amon, and James Dyer for an episode that delves into their Halloween traditions, pays tribute to the late, great Angela Lansbury by discussing the greatest typewriters on screen, casts an eye over the week's movie news, and just about manages to review Halloween Ends, Emily, Nothing Compares, Rosaline, and Luckiest Girl Alive. Oh, and the world's most terrifying earworm is back, so prepare yourself. But remember: YOU WILL NOT BE SAVED!

With that career success also came a pivot, as Knoll has made a name for herself in the industry as a standout screenwriter and producer with even more projects under way. She's adapting the Reddit short story “I Think My Mother-in-Law Is Trying to Kill Me” for Sony and sold her first original script, ‘Til Death, to Amazon. But back before Knoll was adapting stories for film and television and even before she was writing the books that would inspire them, she was an editor at Self and Cosmo magazines. In Episode 116, Susie Boutry (@NovelVisits) joins me to talk about niching down from traditional genre categories into the micro genres we love.  Over the past year, I have picked up on some key themes and types of books that I can generally count on for successful reading. Today, we're putting them all in one special episode as Susie and I bring you a delightfully overflowing list of the micro genres that work for us, books from each, and why we love them. This post contains affiliate links, through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.
