Gekroonde hoofden, kunstenaars, spionnen, charmante dames en journalisten werden door Metternich en het frivole hofleven van Wenen vermaakt met eindeloos entertainment. Bals, opera, banketten, jachtpartijen en salons volgden elkaar maandenlang op. “Hoe loopt het congres? Het congres loopt niet, het danst”, klonk het lachend. Zelfs Beethoven pikte er een graantje van mee! Door een doordachte en innovatieve, rationele organisatie van de onderhandelingen lukte het Metternich om alle neuzen dezelfde kant op te krijgen. De tsaar, het Britse Empire en Habsburg kregen wat zij ambieerden. Pruisen werd een nieuwe grootmacht en ondanks Napoleons nederlaag werd Frankrijk als belangrijk land in ere hersteld. Niemand van de grootmachten bleef gefrustreerd en wraakzuchtig achter. De slachtoffers van destijds zijn verbluffend actueel: Polen, Moldavië, de Balten, Oekraïne, Italië en vooruitstrevende Duitse idealisten. Zo valt er voor ons in 2025 van alles te leren nu de grote wereldspelers als in Wenen toen een nieuw machtsevenwicht lijken te willen opleggen. Heeft de EU haar ambities en rol op orde hierbij? Sometimes when I look back on past episodes of Countermelody, I surprise myself with how good they were, even in the early days when I was still trying to figure everything out. This episode, first posted as a bonus episode five years ago is a good example of that. Earlier that season I had coined the term “Full-Figured Baroque” to describe the “old-fashioned” style of Baroque performance that I personally prefer to what one currently hears in churches and concert halls around the world and on recordings. Gleich zu Beginn erzählt der Student der Veterinärmedizin, welchen intensiven Bezug er zu Anton Bruckner hat und wie wenig ihn Musik interessiert, die nicht diese Komplexität hat. Danach entwickelt sich ein Gespräch über ein damals noch recht junges Leben, in dem aber schon so sehr viel passiert ist: Der frühe Unfalltod des Vaters, eine ausgewachsene Krise in der Spätpubertät, das Nachholen der Matura und der Beginn des Studiums und schliesslich die grosse Sehnsucht nach der Freundin, die zum Zeitpunkt der Ausstrahlung am 17.März 1983 noch ganze sechs Monate in New York sein wird, und das, obwohl «jeder Tag zu viel» sei, wie Stephan Braun zum Schluss des Gespräches sagt. Today (for what I hope are obvious reasons) begins a short Countermelody series on a few of the greatest singers that Mexico, our neighbor to the south, has gifted to the world. Contralto Oralia Domínguez (25 October 1925 - 25 November 2013) is famed for her collaborations with such musical giants as Maria Callas and Herbert von Karajan, but on her own terms, she ranks alongside those monumental true contraltos like Marian Anderson and Kathleen Ferrier. Though there is no question that she was under-recorded, she left a handful of classic commercial recordings, and a plethora of recorded live performances which an artist both technically grounded and fearless in expression, one whose legato singing exuded repose just as her phenomenal coloratura singing generates genuine excitement. I cannot say enough about this artist, who has rapidly become one of my very favorites! Ein paar Prominente hat sie doch interviewt, Heidi Abel, die zwei Jahre lang «Musik für einen Gast» moderiert hat und deren Sendungen im Zentrum dieser Serie steht. Einer davon ist der SP-Bundesrat Willi Ritschard. Wenige Wochen vor seinem Tod spricht er über sein Leben und seine Karriere. Willi Ritschards Auftritt in dieser Sendung ist so, wie man ihn in Erinnerung hat. Zurückhaltend und sympathisch. Aufgewachsen im solothurnischen Deitingen in einfachen Verhältnissen wird er Heizungsmonteur und schliesst sich der Gewerkschaftsbewegung an. Er bildet sich weiter in einer Arbeiterschule und wird 1943 hauptamtlicher Sekretär der Sektion Solothurn des Schweizerischen Bau- und Holzarbeiterverbands. Mit 29 Jahren wird er Gemeindepräsident in seiner Wohngemeinde Luterbach, später Kantonsrat, Nationalrat und Solothurner Regierungsrat. 1973 erfolgte die Wahl in den Bundesrat, wo er zuerst Verkehrs-, dann Finanzminister war. Als ausserordentlich beliebter Politiker, der aber immer auch unter der Bürde des Amtes gelitten hat, verstirbt Willi Ritschard am 16. Oktober 1983 im Amt nur wenige Tage nach seiner Rücktrittserklärung auf Ende Jahr. Und auch nur wenige Wochen nach der Ausstrahlung dieses Gespräches mit Heidi Abel.
