Today's guest is someone I've wanted to get on The Shift for the longest time. You might know Ruby Wax as a successful comedian and presenter, one of the funniest women of her generation. Or you might know her as a mental health campaigner and best-selling author. One thing's for sure, she has been using humour to make the rest of us feel better for decades. Having suffered depression her whole life, Ruby had a breakdown after losing her job on the BBC in her 50s (hold that thought!). Determined not to “go down with the career ship” she took herself off to Oxford university where she got a masters degree in mindfulness based cognitive therapy, was subsequently awarded an OBE for services to mental health and has written several bestselling books about our brains - and hers.  Then, last year, 12 years after her last bout of depression, she discovered she wasn't actually as well as she thought she was… Cue the inspiration for a new book, and tour. Ruby and I met in an office overlooking the Thames the day after a big birthday (which we will not be talking about!!) to discuss why depression is the wrong word for mental illness and the journeys to find meaning that saw her end up on a journey to a 6 week stay in a mental clinic. We also talked about building a new emotional toolkit for the second half of your life, the secret to her 35 year marriage and why we need to stop talking ageing and start talking evolving. There's also hair dye, mindfulness, a Carrie Fisher love-in, jewellery and toe nails. It's all going on in this episode! Falling Upward by Richard Rohr, the book Ruby talks about in this episode, is available here. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was by Ruby Wax and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including transcripts of the podcast, please consider joining The Shift community. Her raw honesty is remarkable as she shared her experience of depression, admitting she barely remembers being unwell, often relying on her own books to piece together those periods. She also spoke about how and why she interviews, how it hinges on a desire to be liked - something I could really relate to!This conversation offered a profound glimpse into the mind of an extraordinary person who is unapologetically herself. You can also follow us on Instagram and Tiktok @greatcompanypodcast and if you've got thoughts, questions and comments, you can email us at greatcompany@jampotproductions.co.uk--THE CREDITSExec Producer: Jemima RathboneAssistant Producer: Gurlina HeerEditor: Dan KingVideo: Jake Ji & Ryley KirbySocial Media: Laura CoughlanGreat Company is an original podcast from JamPot Hosted on Acast. This week's guest is Ruby Wax. A comedian, writer, and mental health advocate, who has wisdom to spare. When she was younger, Ruby often felt lonely - like she didn't fit in - and she turned to comedy. A reinvention that gave Ruby a taste for attention and led her to drama school, and eventually her own television show in which she met the biggest celebrities of the day. After 25 years in television, Ruby reinvented herself once again. She studied mindfulness-based cognitive therapy at Oxford University. And she now works to remove the stigma around mental health. Not least in her book - I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was - a very personal account of depression and the adventures she followed to find meaning in her life. This episode was first published in February 2022.My guest on this episode of the podcast is Ruby Wax. She is a writer, comedian, mental health campaigner and author and someone whose interviews over the years inspired me so it's quite something to be interviewing her for this podcast…Ruby joins me in this episode to talk about her latest book And Now For The Good News - the much-needed tonic for our frazzled world. If you feel utterly distraught at the constant negative news cycle - the climate crisis, increasing costs of living, injustice, Covid and, as this episode goes live, the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, then you may have stopped searching for the light of hope on the horizon. You may just assume that there's only bad news out there in the world to be shared. Here's the thing, if all we ever expect is bad news. If we assume that there is only bad news that chain reaction can make us feel hopeless, and helpless and fall into that space where we wake up in the morning and think ‘what's the point?' As someone whose particular shape and shade of depression took this form, a chronic apathy that eventually suffocated everything, I see this bad news cycle as something that can trigger the same feelings - even in the most hopeful of souls.Perhaps Ruby thought this too, which is why she went on a global search to find the good search. If you don't know the light is there, you won't know to see it. And so Ruby compiled all her findings into the book so we can all see there is hope and to equip us with a positive approach for a brighter world and, most importantly, for a better collective mental wellbeing.Ruby has been open about her own mental health issues over the years, something that was a source of great comfort to me at a time when I needed it, so during our conversation, I also quizzed her about how she emerged from her own struggles, the coping mechanisms she put in place and what she learned from a masters degree in cognitive-based therapy from Oxford University.I came away from the conversation feeling so inspired, not least because speaking to Ruby it was a reminder to always be curious about the world around you rather than scared of it, how vulnerability can immediately neutralise tension and how, though it might feel hard sometimes, it's important to look for and follow the light, because it is there. To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now. Have you ever wondered what it takes to rebuild not just a body, but a life? Gareth Dauncey, an Architect passionate about low-impact design and sustainability, joins us to share his journey of recovery and the power of maintaining routines, like his invigorating sea swims in the cold welsh sea. He opens up about the challenges he faced post-hip surgery and the morale-boosting connections that kept him afloat—reaching out to admired individuals like hat maker Mike Holmes. Our conversation with Gareth is a toast to the profound moments that subtly shape our existence and a nod to the importance of human connections in our personal and professional growth. As the waves of life crash around us, finding a moment of stillness can be revelatory. This episode sails into the heart of mindfulness and well-being, guided by Gareth's experiences with Ruby Wax's 'Frazzled' movement and the sanctuary of Frazzled Cafe online gatherings. He recounts the affirmation found within the pages of Wax's book and the life lessons from his recent hospital stay, offering insights into the transient nature of emotions and the courage to seek help, especially for the self-employed. Listeners will be embraced by a dialogue that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit in the face of physical and emotional pain, and the inspiration drawn from those who navigate life's tumultuous waters.Architecture is often viewed as a rigid craft, but through Gareth's lens, we uncover the fluidity and creativity that lies within. He articulates the delicate balance of achieving simplicity through complexity, a principle that resonates beyond design and into personal growth. Our exchange delves into the ephemeral nature of life's trials and tribulations, the wisdom of the phrase "this too shall pass," and the importance of remaining true to oneself. Join us as we traverse the landscape of creativity, finding inspiration in challenges and embracing the lessons that each day brings.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Today I'm delighted to welcome back one of The Shift's very first guests, journalist and mental health campaigner Bryony Gordon.Bryony has been a columnist on the Telegraph for over 20 years and for ten of those she has been writing candidly about her own experiences of addiction and mental illness. Three years after her first visit to The Shift, Bryony is back - older, wiser (yes really) - and with a new book, the pertinently titled, Mad Woman, which discusses her struggles with burnout, binge eating and, yep, you guessed it, fluctuating hormones.Bryony joined me from bed in south London to talk about maintaining a public facade when you're privately falling apart, finally learning to feed herself properly at 43, discovering all the women in her family went into menopause in their early 40s, why she's done with feeling like she's the problem and how Davina McCall saved her life!If you'd like to sponsor Bryony's Big Challenge, you can find out more here. • If you loved this episode, you might also like my conversations with Sharon Blackie and Ruby Wax.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Mad Woman by Bryony Gordon and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Mood is a mobile app that lets users track their mood with one tap a day. It was invented by Gareth Dauncey, a Welsh architect specialising in low-impact design and adaptive reuse of historic buildings.Gareth created Mood after years of spreading himself too thin. Things hadn't felt right for a while so he started recording how he felt each day with a calendar and coloured pens. Over weeks and months he started to gain a new perspective that helped him take charge of his mental well-being.Following a couple of serendipitous encounters with his now good friend Marco and Ruby Wax he was set on a path that felt like his calling. He turned his manual tracking process into an app, and was able to help others through helping himself. In this episode, Carlos and Laurence talk with Gareth about his journey of creating Mood and becoming more aware of his mental wellbeing.LinksJoin the conversation liveBecome a member of the Happy Startup SchoolJoin the next Vision 20/20 cohortDownload the Mood appFrazzledMind

I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started. Lesley Logan 0:48  Hello, Be It babe. Hi. Oh my gosh, welcome to Fuck Yeah Friday, which means a day where you are reminded to celebrate all the things, not just the things that went perfectly well, not just the things that you actually finished, but just things that you did do. Because that makes life easier. You can actually build your competence by realizing well, I do a lot of shit. And I love to share your guys's wins, because you can hear from peers, like, oh, that's a win. Oh, I wish I had a win like that this week. And then one of mine because I mean, it's important, you know, like, I don't have it all figured out either. No one does. By the way. No one does. If anyone does, and they say they do, you should run, because everyone's always learning. But anyways. Okay, so we'll start with your wins. And then we'll go to mine. And then at the end, I always have I started adding a little affirmation you can repeat or journal on or think about because, you know, sometimes it's like, I don't know, and we just need to like, what do I journal about? What do I write down on my thing, whatever. Something to help you if you're feeling stuck, so I hope this gets you unstuck. Lesley Logan 1:50  Okay, the first win is from Sam, and I, oh, I love this one. Sam is an Agency member. She's an eLevate, member, and she lives in the UK. And she said I'm 50, was her birthday, right? I'm 50, had seemed unbelievable that I got here. So proud of what I've achieved so far. From a cabin in the back garden to a four-room studio space with six instructors, including myself and husband, and admin assistant assistant and a business analyst. So proud of what I'm still achieving so grateful for this community and the beautiful people I've met. So grateful for my beautiful family who continue to amaze me and make me a better person. I feel inspired. I feel strong. I feel young. I feel lucky. I'm ready to inspire others. I'm ready to live my truth. I shall continue to shine a light on others but no longer at the expense of myself. I feel excited for the future. I feel calm. Happy freakin birthday, Sam. And what a way to just inspire everyone on their birthday to just like do some items. And I feel, and I am right. I love I love this. If it is your birthday or your unbirthday like, take a moment to just take stock of like, look at look at how far you've come. Just beautiful, Sam. I've read this seven times now and I, I It still gives me like good chills. Love it. Lesley Logan 3:13  Okay, Claire Sparrow, you remember her? She's had some wins lately. And she's still winning. We've got some more wins to share, but I want to make sure they're from her. But you can check out her episode. We had it out last December. So she wrote whoop, whoop, what a winning week. My book is here in print. And today I took it to a local indie shop who are stocking it. I've also started giving copies to people who it will impact starting with Ruby Wax last week and stuff from Steph's Packed Lunch today. It feels like the beginning. And just so you know, I'm sure we'll have more wins to celebrate with her but her book is published you can get it on Amazon. And it's on the number one bestseller list. So way to go Claire Sparrow, so friggin happy when she was on the podcast, you know, she had plans to write the book and since then she's written the book, published the book, it's gotten in the hands of the best seller. You'd be surprised what you can do in a year you guys you in nine months even should even do a full year she did it like in less than nine months. So super, super proud. And love celebrating that. So you can send your wins into the Be It pod and I'll share them and shout them out so that if you maybe when we air them you're having a day and you hear it you're like oh my god I did that. Like how cool would that be? So make sure you send them in. Lesley Logan 4:25  So my win is that I have had just a lot of little obstacles nothing I think some of the things trials are actually pretty major but this year just have like a lot of like little obstacles. And what I have been working on doing is taking a couple deep breaths and feeling that like fear feeling that worry feeling that oh my god like that that urge to like micromanage and, and my default when there's a lot of obstacles is like do the thing that has the most certainty but certainty is actually perfectionism in disguise. And so it's not I'm not perfect at this yet. It's not all day every day like I'm slaying but I have been really working on this last month. I'm so proud. Like as these two little obstacles that come up as a little flare ups have come up. I felt the feelings, I let myself kind of have a little reaction. And then I did some deep breaths, and not even a full breath work session just like you can do it with me right now you can just inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale. And if you need some, it's a little bit more dynamic, you can do two inhales. And one exhale. Quick little inhale, long exhale, it's a really great brain reset. And it's been awesome, because it's allowing me to trust it's going to work out. And a lot of these little issues solved themselves. By the time I found out about them, they were almost solved or absolved. And so I think it's really important that like, we're gonna have shit hit the fan, it's just gonna happen. And we cannot control all the things, nor do you have the time, nor do you want to, but we can do is take a deep breath, trust, it's going to work out and see these obstacles as these gifts like, Oh my God. This obstacle is actually helping me learn how to overcome this challenge that will probably happen in my future. So we've said before, like life is kind of like a video game. And sometimes you have to go through a challenge that you can get the muscle so that when you have another challenge, you actually can handle that one, right? So anyways, I am trusting it's all gonna work out. And I'm really enjoying it. It's not easy. It's not easy at all, but we're gonna keep doing it. And that's why we're celebrating a win right now. Because I'm not waiting to celebrate a win until I perfectly so good at trusting all obstacles now or celebrating that I've trusted the ones that I've experienced this month. And that's the win. Lesley Logan 6:49  So my affirmation for you to read out loud to yourself is I do not have to linger in dark places. There is help for me here. So I do not have to linger in dark places. There is help for me here. Let's say together. I do not have to linger in dark places. There is help for me here. My love there's help for you. There's people out there whose strength is your weakness and they cannot wait to do what they love to do and help you out. So reach out. Let him and help you trust it's all going to work out and celebrate what you did do. Thank you so much for listening. Until next time, Be It Till You See It. Lesley Logan 7:33  That's all I got for this episode of the Be It Till You See It Podcast. As most of you will know Ruby Wax is a comedian, actor and author as well as a mental health campaigner.  Our conversation was particularly powerful because we got under the hood of the performer Ruby, and gained insight into who she really is, and how she got to be who she is. In listening to her honesty you will connect with yourself and recognise some of the influences that led you, the listener, to be you.  We discussed complex issues like: What led Ruby to be ‘not as well as [she] thought [she] was' and her breakdown after 12 years of being stable. Why her experience of depression was like a ‘holocaust inside'.  How we navigate together the difficult line of describing her experience without triggering her to drop back into it. The power of comedy as a defence and as a way to bear the unbearable We discuss the roots of Ruby's depression and how it stemmed from the abuse and terror of her childhood and how that terror lives on and plays out in our daily life, even if managed.  For Ruby being at home is a place of threat and how she feels 'trapped' when locked inside her house for too long. OK, I admit it, I'm a bit in awe, because today's guest is someone I've wanted to get on The Shift for the longest time. You might know Ruby Wax as a successful comedian and presenter, one of the funniest women of her generation. Or you might know her as a mental health campaigner and best-selling author. One thing's for sure, she has been using humour to make the rest of us feel better for decades.Having suffered depression her whole life, Ruby had a breakdown after losing her job on the BBC in her 50s (hold that thought!). Determined not to “go down with the career ship” she took herself off to Oxford university where she got a masters degree in mindfulness based cognitive therapy, was subsequently awarded an OBE for services to mental health and has written several bestselling books about our brains - and hers. Then, last year, 12 years after her last bout of depression, she discovered she wasn't actually as well as she thought she was… Cue the inspiration for a new book, and tour.Ruby and I met in an office overlooking the Thames the day after a big birthday (which we will not be talking about!!) to discuss why depression is the wrong word for mental illness and the journeys to find meaning that saw her end up on a journey to a 6 week stay in a mental clinic. We also talked about building a new emotional toolkit for the second half of your life, the secret to her 35 year marriage and why we need to stop talking ageing and start talking evolving. There's also hair dye, mindfulness, a Carrie Fisher love-in, jewellery and toe nails. It's all going on in this episode!Falling Upward by Richard Rohr, the book Ruby talks about in this episode, is available here. You can catch Ruby on a UK wide tour, starting in September, tickets are available now via LiveNation.co.uk* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was by Ruby Wax and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including transcripts of the podcast, please consider joining The Shift community. What happens when a woman famous for talking to people, and for her razor sharp wit, is left stranded on a desert island with just herself and a hermit crab for company? Author, comedian, broadcaster and mental health campaigner Ruby Wax decided to spend 10 days completely cut off from the modern world and other humans, and you can see the results on Channel 5 in Ruby Wax : Cast Away. She joins Anita to discuss what it was like being alone on an uninhabited island near Madagascar. In 2018 the people of Ireland voted to repeal the 8th amendment and grant women access to safe and free abortions up to 12 weeks into pregnancy. Ireland was promised ‘excellent' abortion services but what is the reality 5 years on? On Wednesday, an independent review of abortion services was released that proposed 10 major changes to legislation. Anita is joined by Dr Deirdre Duffy, a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Lancaster University who was involved in putting together the evidence base for the review. Currently celebrating her 30th year in business, the celebrity colourist Jo Hansford MBE has been described as the “best tinter on the planet”. She started off cutting hair in her parents' front room and is now one of the most famous female names in the business with two salons, her own range of products, and clients who've included Elizabeth Hurley, Angelina Jolie and Richard Burton, not to mention she is the woman in charge of the Queen Consort's crowning glory! Jo spoke to Nuala about her career, passion for colour - and the upcoming coronation. Zoe Lyons is known for being funny Radio 4 comedy shows like The New Quiz and seen her on TV shows like Live at the Apollo and QI. She also hosts the BBC2 quiz show 'Lightning'. Over the last couple of years, she has kept herself busy by having (what she describes as) ‘a monumental midlife crisis'. It involved buying a sports car, splitting up with her wife and running a 100k ultra marathon…Along the way her hair also started to fall out. Thankfully Zoe has been able to see the funny side and she's used the experience to write her stand up show ‘Bald Ambition'…which she is currently touring around the country. Zoe joins Nuala to discuss. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Hanna Ward Editor: Louise Corley

What happens when a woman famous for her razor sharp wit is left stranded on a desert island with just her own company and a hermit crab called Spartacus? Author, broadcaster and mental health campaigner Ruby Wax joins Anita to explain why she decided to spend 10 days completely cut off from the modern world and other humans. The Prime Minister's mother-in-law, Sudha Murty, has claimed that her daughter is the reason Rishi Sunak is in Number 10. She says she herself succeeded in making her husband a businessman, and now her daughter has done the same. To find out more about this claim and the Murty women, journalist and Executive Editor of Politico Anne McElvoy speaks to Anita. What are all the ruffles doing in summer clothes? Why are baggy dresses back? And how do you go about doing your summer shopping without buying the same dress as eight other people at the party? Grazia journalist Hannah Banks Walker and columnist Martha Alexander join Anita to chat all things summer fashion. The NHS Maternity services are in crisis. But how did we get to this point? What was it like to give birth at the very beginning of the NHS? Dr Emily Baughan, Senior Lecturer at Sheffield University, tells Anita how a forgotten book called National Baby can help us understand our current situation. The book was written by Sarah Campion, who had one of the very first truly ‘national babies', cared for not just from cradle to grave, but in utero by the newly set up health service. Where are all the female choreographers? Liv Lorent is an award-winning choreographer who has spent her career going against the tide in a male dominated arena. 30 years on, she says not much has changed. She speaks to Anita about how women are rare in the industry, which is still lagging behind in putting women behind as well as centre stage. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Lottie Garton
