It's incredible to think that Richard Loring, the actor, singer, dancer and tv personality turns 90 early next year. Rodney Trudgeon invited Richard into the People of Note studio to discuss this milestone and to talk about his 60 years in showbiz. The work of Japanese avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama is famed for its use of dots and inspired the likes of Andy Warhol. She was a work of art herself, often photographed wearing a bright orange wig and technicolour clothes covered in her signature polka dots. But, behind the canvas Yayoi was suffering with her mental health and spent almost five decades living in a psychiatric hospital. Frances Morris, the former Director of Tate Modern, now chair of the Gallery Climate Coalition, curated a retrospective exhibition of Kusama's work.  The Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladić was jailed for life in 2017 for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. He was known as the "Butcher of Bosnia" and infamously ordered the death of thousands of men and boys in the town of Srebrenica in July 1995. The author and journalist Tim Judah met and interviewed Ratko Mladić and tells his story.When the actor Tim Curry slapped on full make up, donned fishnet stockings and corset and let loose his uniquely powerful voice, no one in the audience was ever going to forget meeting the Rocky Horror Show's Frank N Furter. Curry was born in Warrington in 1946 and his first acting job came after university in the original London production of the equally groundbreaking rock musical “Hair” in 1968. He was known also as the original Pennywise from Stephen King's "It”, the naturalist Nigel Thornberry in the much-loved children's series “The Wild Thornberrys”, and Long John Silver in the 1996 film “Muppet Treasure Island” alongside a young Kevin Bishop who recalls his experience of working with Tim Curry.Violet Hensley has died at the astonishing age of 109. She was one of the last surviving links back to depression-era America, she was also a luthier, or instrument maker, and a fine fiddle player. Her instruments were of such high quality that she became known as the “Stradivarius of the Ozarks”. Violet made her first instrument when she was 14, but four years later she got married and stopped performing and making fiddles while she raised nine children. After a thirty-year break, she started making music again. An interesting new play has just opened at the Arena Theatre. It was written by Louis Viljoen and is called The Killing of a Union Leader, described as a gripping political thriller, the plays stars, among others, John Maytham, well known as a broadcaster here in Cape Town. It's less than a week to go until opening night for the cast of the Rocky Horror Show on Broadway and Luke Evans who plays Dr. Frank-N-Furter is ready to march out on stage in his fishnets and 7 inch platform heels.  “I think I enjoy the process of tech…because you still have the license and the freedom to try things and change things up,” says Evans, “but if we open tomorrow, I feel very, very good about what we have.”“I feel giddy,” echos director Sam Pinkleton. “Always with live theater, you could tinker until death…And at a certain point you have to be like, "Pencils down." And I think with this show especially, I mean, we've had such a good time making it.” The duo joined guest host Marley Marius, Vogue's Senior Editor, Features & News on The Run Through podcast to talk about their collaboration in Rocky Horror Show on Broadway. Recently, the cast photographed for Vogue by Norman Jean Roy and styled by Tonne Goodman. The photo shoot took place on the first day that the ensemble met each other. “I'm not just saying this because I'm on the Vogue podcast. Tonne and Norman got it on a molecular level,” explains Pinkleton. “And I was like, oh, it's like the DNA of the thing… That shoot set a path for making the show in a way that I didn't totally expect.” And while the cast prepares for opening night, Pinkleton has also started working this week with Maya Rudolph as she is set to take over the titular role in the hit play ‘Oh Mary!'"You know, when Cole [Escola] and I were first making “Oh, Mary!”, we were like, 'Well, no one will ever play this part other than Cole.' I mean, no one could really do it other than, I don't know, like Maya Rudolph." So we're really eating our words now,” says Pinkleton who sees parallels between the two shows. “Mary Todd Lincoln is such an amazing character. Melissa Auf der Maur is an acclaimed musician, photographer, curator, and producer, best known as the former bassist of rock bands Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins. Her new memoir Even the Good Girls Will Cry covers those heady rockstar times of the 1990s, and is out now. She has also released two solo albums, Auf der Maur (2004) and Out of Our Minds (2010), the latter of which is part of a larger project that also includes a comic book and a short film. Melissa's photographs have been exhibited internationally, including at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and have appeared in such publications as Spin, Elle, Nylon, and American Photo.
