This week we opened Genesis 1 and 2 not as a science debate or a piece of poetry, but as something more specific: a temple-building text. Using the work of scholar John Walton, we traced how the six days of creation follow a forming-and-filling pattern, and how day seven is the moment God moves into what he has made. The cosmos is his temple. His rest is not exhaustion. It is delight. He settled in to be with his people.From there we looked at what it means to be made in the image of God. In the ancient world, kings placed statues throughout their kingdoms to announce their authority. Genesis says God did something similar, except his images walk around, eat breakfast, and drive to work. We are royal representatives, image bearers placed in the world to reflect God's rule into every corner of it.Genesis 2 zooms in close. God kneels in the dirt, forms a man like a potter works clay, and breathes into him face to face. The first human's lungs were filled with the breath of God. Then God plants a garden and places his image bearers in it with a commission: cultivate and spread it. Eden was the seed. The whole earth was the field.Three practices came out of this: receive your identity from God before the world tells you who you are, take the gardening commission seriously in whatever corner of life you have been placed, and understand that the whole story is moving toward one thing: presence. God with his people. That longing we feel for things to be right is not nostalgia. TheMessenger principle, both as a concept and a reality, means that a person's messenger—theone sent—is regarded as the sender himself.  The proverbialHebrew statement about the Messenger Principle is “השליח שווה לשולחו”the one sent (a messenger) is equal to his sender.” The equality of the onesent to his sender is neither an equality of essence nor of individual one-to-oneidentity. Everyone understood that the messenger was not literally the sameperson nor the same being as the sender. Rather, the messenger was given thesender's full authority to speak and act on his behalf. The messenger carried authorityfrom the sender and was therefore to be regarded as the sender himself. Old Testament scholar John Walton highlights aspects of messenger/agency in the ZondervanIllustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary when discussing the firstappearance of the angel (messenger) of Yahweh in Genesis 16 (to Hagar in thewilderness). Walton explains:In the ancient world direct communication between important parties was ararity. Diplomatic and political exchange usually required the use of anintermediary, a function that our ambassadors exercise today. The messenger whoserved as the intermediary was a fully vested representative of the partyhe represented. He spoke for that party and with the authority of thatparty. He was accorded the same treatment as that party wouldenjoy were he there in person. In this episode I explore the Parable of the Lost Sheep in Luke 15:1-7 in which Jesus, directly responding to his critics, explains how his audience would leave ninety-nine sheep in the pasture to find one who had wondered from the flock, rejoicing when the wayward sheep is found. Jesus isn't telling a simple pastoral parable about God's grace, but drawing on powerful imagery from the Old Testament prophets, particularly Jeremiah 23:1-2 and Ezekiel 34, about the wicked shepherds of Israel who had led God's people astray and the promise that God would rescue his people from the curse of the covenant by sending a good shepherd, the promised son of David, to rescue the whole house of Israel. Luke believes the promises are being fulfilled in Jesus, the son of David bringing about the kingdom of God. Many of us find the Old Testament difficult to understand. Some find it incomprehensible, and some find it difficult to square with our modern sensibilities. We wonder if the Old Testament is irrelevant. Or we try to understand it and find it so confusing that we give up trying to read it.Our guest is one of the most influential Old Testament scholars of this generation. John Walton has spent his career engaging deeply with the Old Testament's text and understands the ancient context in which it was written.His latest book is Old Testament Theology for Christians: From Ancient Context to Enduring Belief (InterVarsity Press, 2025). In it, he invites us to leave our modern, and even our inherited Christian, preconceptions at the threshold as we enter the world of the Old Testament. We discuss:* How the New Testament writers viewed the Old Testament, and the danger of shirking our desire to understand it.* That since the Old Testament was written for us, it was not written to us. To fully comprehend the way that it is for us, we have to do whatever it takes to join the author's implied audience. We discuss the importance of delving into both the cultural and literary contexts.* The Israelites swam in the “cultural rivers” of the Mesopotamian and Egyptian religious ideas. Does this mean that the Old Testament is just a flawed human creation because it was influenced by its Ancient Near Eastern context?* From the beginning, God's intention has always been to dwell among his people and to be in relationship with them.
