Front Row Classics is pleased to welcome Juliet Prowse, niece to the legendary entertainer Juliet Prowse. Juliet has penned a wonderful tribute to her aunt called "Juliet Prowse: Born to Dance: The Extraordinary Life Story of My Aunt". Brandon and Juliet chat about her aunt's upbringing in South Africa and what led her to the US. The two also discuss her love of the dancer's life as well as her relationships with Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley.   Juliet Prowse never intended on becoming an author, but when she spotted a little red suitcase in her parents' attic, full of articles about her famous aunt, the dancer/entertainer Juliet Prowse, she just wanted to tell this story. As a communications professional with a BSc and MBA, Juliet was used to writing, but to ensure the authenticity of her aunt's biography, Juliet researched extensively, reading 1000 letters/articles and interviewing many who worked with Juliet. Known as big Juliet and little Juliet in the Prowse household, little Juliet inherited her aunt's athleticism and became a South African runner. She lives in Cape Town where she is an avid theatregoer and sports lover. You don’t need a traditional path to build a thriving music career! Just ask Cliff and Susan Prowse, who turned classical piano chops and play-by-ear instincts into a full-blown lifestyle business. Whether you learned to read music first or figured out theory after the fact, what matters is training your ear to hear intervals, stacking up reps, and putting in the practice until harmony feels like second nature. Use your DAW to sharpen your pitch, but don’t psych yourself or your bandmates out: true tone deafness is rare, and confidence is currency on stage. The bottom line: making a real living in music is absolutely possible when you treat your craft like a skill you never stop sharpening. Once you hit the stage, remember that the crowd is the star and you’re the emcee who just happens to sing and play. Take your audience on a journey: open at mid-energy, build it up, let it breathe, then hit them again. Mix genres, swap instruments, toss in some comedy, and never leave dead air between songs; keep every second purposeful. Think of your set like a video game where you’re always leveling up the room. Manage your breaks with music that matches the vibe so the party never stalls. Playing covers isn’t just a gig — it’s a masterclass in entertainment, and entertainment is its own art form. Blues to headlining her own million-dollar Vegas residency, Big Juliet redefined what it meant to be a female entertainer in a male-dominated era. Little Juliet takes listeners behind the scenes of her research journey — discovering a red suitcase of letters, interviewing former collaborators, and piecing together the life of a woman who never waited for permission to shine. The discussion unpacks the discipline, athleticism, and business savvy that made Juliet Prowse one of the highest-paid performers of the 1970s, plus stories of her engagements to Sinatra, her friendship with Elvis, and her unstoppable work ethic that kept her dancing until her final days. This episode is perfect for dancers, musical-theatre artists, and history-minded creatives who want to learn from one of the greats — and be reminded that success is built on grit, artistry, and courage to create your own opportunities.Shownotes:(0:00) – Welcome & introduction to Juliet Prowse interview(3:00) – Little Juliet shares the story behind her famous name(13:18) – Discovering a red suitcase & inspiration to write Born to Dance(16:00) – Big Juliet's early Hollywood years & Vegas debut(21:03) – Athleticism, costuming, and Bob Mackie's extravagant designs(25:39) – Breaking barriers: creating her own Las Vegas show(31:22) – The million-dollar Desert Inn contract & Vegas legacy(36:29) – Life, love & rumors — Sinatra, Elvis, and beyond(41:23) – Performing through illness & leaving a lasting impact(1:03:00) – Lessons for today's dancers: hard work, creativity, & legacyBiography:Juliet Prowse never intended on becoming an author, but when she spotted a little red suitcase in her parents' attic, filled to the brim with articles about her famous aunt, the dancer/entertainer Juliet Prowse, she felt she just had to tell this story. As a seasoned communications professional, Juliet was used to writing, but to ensure the authenticity of her first book, Juliet waded through over 1 000 newspaper articles and letters, largely written by her dancing aunt to her mother (the author's grandmother), and spoke to over 20 people who had performed with Juliet. Known as Big Juliet and Little Juliet in the Prowse household, Little Juliet inherited her aunt's athleticism and became a South African runner, but she was never as graceful as her famous aunt who was born to dance.Juliet has an MBA from the University of Cape Town and a science degree from the University of Nebraska. Juliet Prowse: Born to Dance: The Extraordinary Life Story of My AuntIn this episode, I discussed with Juliet Prowse regarding her book about her Aunt Juliet Prowse.  Juliet Prowse was a young South African dancer and entertainer who burst into the international spotlight in her first Hollywood movie, Can-Can. Considered talented and exotic, she caught the media's attention and her engagement to Frank Sinatra fuelled their fascination further. But was it love and what did Sinatra make of Juliet's relationship with Elvis during G.I. Blues? Unhappy with 20th Century Fox, Juliet broke out of her contract, created her own company and became one of the highest paid dancers of her era on a $1 million Las Vegas contract in the mid-1970s.

The legacy of Star Wars extends far beyond lightsabers and space battles—it lives in the remarkable humans who brought these iconic characters to life. From the reluctant Jedi to the princess who gave zero f*cks, this episode pulls back the curtain on the fascinating, sometimes tragic lives of the Star Wars actors who've joined the cosmic force.Sir Alec Guinness might have hated the "mumbo jumbo" dialogue of Obi-Wan Kenobi, but his shrewd 2% royalty deal made him wealthy beyond imagination. Yet behind his disdain lurked a complicated man—a convert to Catholicism with arrest records suggesting a hidden sexuality in an era when such truths meant professional death. Meanwhile, Peter Mayhew transformed Chewbacca from a walking carpet into one of cinema's most beloved characters, his 7'3" frame and gentle nature making him the polar opposite of Guinness at conventions—embracing fans rather than telling them to never watch Star Wars again.Carrie Fisher's journey from Hollywood royalty to space princess to mental health advocate stands as perhaps the most compelling story. Her battles with bipolar disorder and addiction never dimmed her razor-sharp wit, turning personal demons into literary gold through memoirs that peeled back celebrity's gilded veneer. When she passed away in December 2016, followed just one day later by her mother Debbie Reynolds, it felt like losing both royalty and family. The men behind Darth Vader—David Prowse's intimidating physicality and James Earl Jones' resonant voice—remind us that even the greatest villains are team efforts. Prowse, who chose to play Vader over Chewbacca because "everyone remembers the villain," never saw his face on screen, while Jones transformed from a stuttering child into the voice that launched a thousand shivers down spines worldwide. These actors created more than characters—they built a modern mythology that continues to resonate across generations.
