Are Savage Worlds Game Masters the WORST in the Industry? We tackle this controversial and provocative claim made on the G*M*S Magazine Podcast and more in this episode of the SavageCast. Savage News: Ghost Punchers by Darryl Hardy This is Worldcrafting by Andrzej “Enc” Stój Gamecca Magazine Savage Review Series Olympus Inc is now for sale! Are Savage Worlds GMs the WORST Game Masters in the Industry? http://www.gmsmagazine.com/podcasts/podcast-episode-the-rpg-room-games-that-are-bad-for-the-industry Time in to Podcast: 48:00 minutes in [------] - 5:05 minutes left Context: Jim and Paco are talking about what games have been bad for the industry. Late in the show Jim is talking about other Indie RPGs that are too hipster or too mico-cosmic to have wide appeal and he wonders why he's bothering to publish indie games with these other games and hypothesizes that could rather just publish Savage Worlds stuff instead. ... Jim Pinto: Every time I see another Indy game come out, it makes me wonder why am I making these kind of games too. Why don't I just make a Savage Worlds expansion and just do that for the rest of my life. Paco Jaen: No, don't. Not Savage Worlds. Jim Pinto: I just needed an example and that's what popped in to my head. I can't say GURPS anymore. Paco Jaen: No, but you can use a good example. Jim Pinto: Uh, I think, I've said this before. I like Shane, I like Pinnacle, I like Savage Worlds. I think the player base that I continue to encounter are the worst game masters in the industry. So maybe we can say, that despite ... we can add that to the list ... despite the fact that Savage Worlds is a good idea and a good game, it has been bad for the hobby because it has empowered all these shitty GMs. GenghisCon 40 is coming, February 16th-19th, 2017 We interview Matt Rowles, owner, on all the Savagery we can expect: Ed Wetterman, Shane Hensley, and more.

If you've ever been offended by people having the wrong kind of fun, stop listening now. If you're already pulling up your fill in the blanks form letter with the words "problematic" "the galactic patriarchy" "alien cultural appropriation" or "sith privilege" stop listening now. Do you like having your cherished Sci Fi and Fantasy properties unceremoniously tortured beyond recognition? Do you enjoy foul language and offensive humor? Are you an adult whose delinquency I can legally contribute to by way of this podcast? Then you just might love this actual play from GenghisCon 2016. It's a Sunday morning game I wrote and ran called "Star Wars: Coming, Winter Is" where the classic Star Wars characters get taken over by their Game of Thrones alter-egos. It was an interesting experiment for me. I've never really included sexual situations in my games and this one goes to the extreme other end of that scale. Which frankly is more comfortable than trying to run or play in a sexual situation that is supposed to be taken seriously. Which I still doubt I'd ever bother with in a game. I've never encouraged Player vs. Player action in my games and this game practically mandates it. You'll notice that about half way through the game I don't even have any NPCs to manage and it's all just the players interacting with each other. There's also an interesting bit of GM fiat I pulled near the end. One of the characters basically ended the game, and it was totally appropriate and consistent with the character. So that was the theatrical release ending but we played out a Blu-Ray Director's Cut with alternate ending, and I ran the next scene. We had about 20 minutes left, the next scene was necessary to provide at least one other character the pay-off they had waited the entire game to achieve, and it also gave the players who had just been killed in the first ending a chance at a different outcome. Unfortunately a lot of this dialogue was in my head and didn't get communicated to the players like "hey, great ending, not going to take that away from you, but who wants to see what would happen if we also do this next scene, too." I think it worked out though. Blurb: A blonde knight with one hand. A princess in the highest ranks of power. Siblings. Lovers. Conspiratorial murderers who brought down the last regime to install their evil father on the throne. Lannisters? Nay, Skywalkers. Alderaan was a false flag event. The destruction of the Death Star was an inside job. Anakin "Darth Vader" Skywalker and his progeny have always known, always been in league. Their rise to the top of the Rebel Alliance and the Empire is no-coincidence, it's all been a part of their plan. And now the only thing that stands in their way to complete galactic domination is YOU. Restore the Republic, oust the tyrants!
We have our fingers knuckle deep into the zeitgeist of Savage Worlds (don't worry, a little enlargement is normal at this age, it's entirely benign and won't necessarily progress) and a clear pattern has emerged recently: Savages treating non-people-things the way Savage Worlds treats characters. In the upcoming Pirate setting that we're working on, we treat Ships like characters, giving them stats and Edges and possibility for advancement, etc. We introduce you to our partner in crime and the workhorse behind the setting, Brett Weihing, and find out a little about his background in gaming and his thought process going in to the new crunch we're bringing to the pirate setting. We promised you a sneak peak at some of the concepts we're playing with for the pirate setting, so here's an excellent piece by the wizard Rick Hershey of Fat Goblin Games that's going to be featured in the book. Several of you listeners have written in asking about very similar concepts, treating non-characters like characters. Sean Masters asks how to model realm management in Savage Worlds, which can be done with a virtual character (to which Victor Diaz, Eli Kurtz, Eric Lamoureux, Michael Robbins, and Josh Eaves provided answers), and Charles Gerard of the Miskatonic University Podcast asked about how to stat up a village like an abstract NPC. Next we field your questions about Reach 1 Weapons, First Strike, and Withdrawing from combat (Paul Lawrence from the UK); and how to model anthropomorphic PCs and where to find models for them (Jason Baldwin). We also debut a new segment called RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES! where we come up with plot hooks for your games based on interesting items in the news. In this episode, creepy sounds from the dark side of the moon. We kicked off the episode with a bit of book keeping: We've been publishing the podcast for 8 months, and in that time we've amassed 156 Google Plus members - 101 Facebook Group members - 62 followers on twitter - 11 ratings Itunes, published 13 episodes (this is the 14th counting ep 0!), wracked up a massive $7.42 in DTRPG Affiliate shillbucks and most importantly reached 14,500 Episode downloads. We also announce that Ed Wetterman will be the Savage Guest of Honor at GenghisCon 2017, this February in Denver. Keep your questions, feedback, and suggestions coming. Mommy and Bull are back to help you not suck at Savage Worlds. Savage Happenings: We discuss the highly successful Weird War One kickstarter and 7th Sea, tease our upcoming episodes with Charles White about Olympus Inc. and its upcoming kickstarter resurrection on April 5th. We also hint at our upcoming Sean Patrick Fannon recording which will cover a RIFTS interview and an actual-play. Karl Keesler of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 1980s fame is confirmed as the Savage Worlds special guest for Tacticon 2016 (second only to GenghisCon as the largest Savage Worlds convention anywhere) which will be held in Colorado Springs, CO September 1st through 4th. Thank you listeners (and our Moms) for catapulting our show to the "New and Noteworthy" section of iTunes and into the Top 10 podcasts in our category. Savage Main Course: We blather on for an hour talking about how Bull's Tacticon2015 game bored Shane to tears necessitating a GM reboot and the resulting "Don't Suck at Con Games" advice we gathered in the aftermath. Tips for both Game Masters and Players to get the most out of your Convention games is now featured on Pinnacle's Convention page. Learn from our mistakes to avoid the most common pitfalls that lead to lousy con games. We originally recorded this back in December so "the last Con" mentioned in the episode was Tacticon 2015, not GenghisCon 2016, in case that's confusing -- but the advice applies for any convention games big or small. Remember, we want YOUR tips, so send them (audio preferred) to uproar@savagecast.com. Also send in any questions you have for Sean Patrick Fannon on the upcoming Savage Worlds release of RIFTS. N.B.: "Locative" is apparently a portmanteau of "loquacious" and "talkative."
