Spirit Nation: Poems From A Heretical Faith by John Patrick AcevedoJohn Patrick Acevedo's forthcoming book entitled "SPIRIT NATION Poems From A Heretical Faith" is about the Logos, Pathos, and Ethos that his life, love, and work has given him as well as taken away from him. It is also a book of Truths, especially the dynamics of the world of have and have-not's. In it, John Patrick Acevedo suggests that the inequity of the world is because of the non-compromise and the over-competition of the worker and market. Market uses the worker by the heart's active giving and the worker abuses market by the body's passive giving. Market abuses the worker by the soul's active taking and the worker uses market by the mind's passive or emotional taking. Acevedo suggests in his poetry that market should be more ccountable and the worker should be more goal-driven. He further offers his belief in a "family of faith" as well as a "Spirit Nation" that is neither America or Puerto Rico, where he currently resides with his paternal family, but rather an ideal that he believes is the fundamental mystery of both the Old and New Testament of the Holy Bible. His idea resounds in both the macro-reality of praise and the micro-reality of prayer. In 2010 to 2012, John Patrick Acevedo was a member of Poets Ink, the rebanded new Wineglass Court Poets critique group that met every month in Howard County Community College and later at the Ivy Bookshop store in Pikesville, Maryland. In January 2001, he was a featured poet at the Mariposa Center for Creative Expression led by Mrs. Maritza (formerly) Rivera.Over the months there, he read his new poems alongside such famous writers as Mark Daniel Epstein (author of the critically-acclaimed Bob Dylan biography) and penned “give and take” as the lowest common denominator between God and human nature.Since then, he has published eleven books completely on his own as the sole-proprietor and sole-author of Synergy Press books and media and has sold his poetry on synergy-press.org.A 1990 graduate of the College of Communication at Boston University, in 1994 Acevedo began a career with the retail giant Best Buy as their top seller and consistently ranked in the top 5 in attached profit levers such as magazines, warranties, memberships, and major credit cards, especially in the Operations Department (District as well as on the store level) for the latter part of his 20 years. Double recipient of the company's most prestigious award, The Brad Anderson Legacy Stock Award, he retired in 2014 prior to receiving the most coveted insurance The Hartford as well as countless MVP and service excellence awards.John Patrick has also published a classic spoken word cd called The Mad City Coffee Reading and produced the film short Holy Bible Sociology! CTL Script/ Top Stories of October 17th Publish Date: October 17th   Pre-Roll: From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Award-Winning Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast  Today is Friday, October 17th and Happy Birthday to Alan Jackson I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Times Journal Woodstock's Dupree Road Trail to be completed in December Traffic stop in Canton for speeding results in weapon and drug charges Publix shopping center coming to Woodstock in 2026 Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on grass fed beef We’ll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you’re looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  Commercial: Ingles Markets 8 STORY 1: Woodstock's Dupree Road Trail to be completed in December Woodstock is finally moving forward with the Dupree Road Trail, a project that’s about way more than just sidewalks. Construction is set to wrap up by Dec. 17, adding 1,500 feet of new trail and sidewalk to connect Market Street to the east side of the I-575 bridge. The $397,655 project, funded partly by a Community Development Block Grant, will make a real difference for residents in low- to moderate-income neighborhoods—folks who rely on walking to get to work, school, or even the grocery store. STORY 2: Traffic stop in Canton for speeding results in weapon and drug charges A Florida man’s road trip to Kentucky took a sharp detour in Canton—straight to jail. Around 12:15 p.m. on Oct. 11, a Canton officer spotted a 2001 Toyota Camry speeding and weaving on I-575. The driver, Angel Alexis Acevedo, pulled into an abandoned gas station after the officer attempted a stop. The officer smelled marijuana, spotted a bong, and a search revealed a pound of weed, THC products, a Glock clone with a 33-round magazine, and more. Acevedo now faces multiple felony drug and weapons charges. STORY 3: Publix shopping center coming to Woodstock in 2026 Construction has kicked off on the new Woodstock Mill District, a shopping center anchored by a Publix, right in the heart of downtown Woodstock. The project, led by Atlanta-based developer Connolly, is taking shape along Towne Lake Parkway, near the Mill Street and Lyndee Lane roundabout. It’s big—118,000 square feet of retail, including a 46,791-square-foot Publix and six standalone buildings for shops, restaurants, and services. Think patios, dining spots, and plenty of space to wander. Connolly, who bought the site in late September, is blending this with the existing Towne Lake Plaza, which they’ll renovate. Completion? Phased through 2026. It’s a game-changer for Woodstock. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info.    We’ll be right back. Break: COBB FALL FESTIVAL STORY 4: Woodstock council adopts new rules for parking deck  Woodstock’s cracking down on parking deck new rules—and they’re not messing around. Violators could face fines up to $1,000 or even 60 days in jail. The updated ordinance, approved Oct. 13, bans everything from camping and loitering to blasting music or doing donuts in the parking deck. Got a drone, ATV, or unregistered car? Don’t even think about leaving it there. Oh, and if your car’s in a restricted zone for more than 24 hours? Towed. At your expense. The rules are in effect now, and enforcement isn’t just on Woodstock PD—state and county officers are in on it too. STORY 5: Cherokee County Football Power Rankings - Week 10  The Cherokee County football power rankings are heating up as we head into Week 10. No. 1 - Sequoyah (7-1, 4-1) The Chiefs are back on top after a gritty 31-24 win over Woodstock. Will Rajecki? Absolute beast—171 yards, three touchdowns, and a statement game. They’re tied for first in Region 6AAAAA but hold the tiebreaker over Sprayberry. With a bye this week, they’ll rest up for Creekview, which could decide the region title. No. 2 - River Ridge (6-2, 3-2) Tough week for the Knights. A 28-10 loss to Sprayberry stung, but losing QB Hunter Lockerman to injury? Brutal. Andrew Rowe stepped in, but the offense struggled. The bye couldn’t come at a better time—they need to regroup and heal. No. 3 - Creekview (4-4, 4-1) The Grizzlies bounced back in style, crushing Pope 42-14. Backup QB Landon Barnes was flawless—7-for-7, 111 yards, three TDs. With River Ridge and Sequoyah up next, they’ll need that same energy to stay in the playoff hunt. No. 4 - Woodstock (5-3, 3-2) The Wolverines fought hard against Sequoyah, clawing back from a 21-3 hole, but fell short. QB Graham Burmeister and WR Rylan Hubbard were electric, connecting for two scores. With Riverwood and Sprayberry left, they need at least one win to stay alive in the playoff race. No. 5 - Etowah (3-5, 1-3) The Eagles’ playoff hopes took a hit with a loss to Wheeler. Kingston Caesar and Zeke Douglass had flashes of brilliance, but turnovers killed momentum. With Walton and North Cobb looming, it’s a tough road ahead for this young squad. No. 6 - Cherokee (1-7, 0-4) It’s been a rough season for the Warriors, but Brandon Hamilton continues to shine—105 yards last week, pushing his season total to 1,117. With North Cobb and Marietta left, they’re fighting to avoid their worst record since 2017. The Uberification of Academia: Why Adjunct Professors are Living in their Cars

Keen On Democracy

We've done a couple (here and here) of shows recently about the war on cars. But we never discussed the connections, both literal and metaphorical, between the damage of “Big Car” and “Big University” . According to the tenured Emory law professor Deepa Das Acevedo, what she calls in her new book, The War on Tenure, is really an attempt to transform the modern university into an academic version of Uber. By getting rid of tenure, Acevedo argues, academia is creating a new precariat of adjunct professors who are living in their cars. What she calls the “uberification” of academia is, so to speak, driving an assault not just on tenure, but on free thought and intellectual innovation. The war on tenure, then, is part of the broader neo-liberal project to replace full-time jobs with precarious labor. Academics - you have nothing to lose but your cars!1. The Charlie Kirk Fallout is a Watershed MomentIn just one month, an estimated 40-60 professors have been fired over social media posts about the assassination - with perhaps 10-15 being tenured faculty. This represents potentially half the number of academic freedom-related terminations that occurred over the entire previous 20-year period (2000-2020).2. Rich Universities Are Leading the Race to the BottomContrary to expectations, it's not cash-strapped colleges but wealthy universities with substantial endowments that are most aggressively replacing tenure-track positions with contingent adjunct labor - choosing to spend their resources elsewhere while casualizing their core academic workforce.3. Academic Job Markets Are Essentially MonopolisticThe entire state of Georgia has only 5-6 positions for a labor law professor. This extreme scarcity means academics can't simply “get another job” like workers in other industries - making job security through tenure essential for attracting people to spend 8-10 years training for these positions.4. The “Lazy Professor” Myth is Unsupported by DataResearch shows tenure doesn't reduce productivity - highly productive scholars remain productive after tenure, while those who did minimum work continue at that level. People become academics for reasons beyond job security, contradicting the stereotype of post-tenure retirement.5. Academic Precarity Has Reached Crisis LevelsAdjunct professors are literally living in cars while teaching classes. When academics lose stable employment, they typically exit the profession entirely rather than finding another academic position, creating a brain drain that threatens the future of higher education and research.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. As academia increasingly comes under attack in the United States, The War on Tenure (Cambridge UP, 2025) steps in to demystify what professors do and to explain the importance of tenure for their work. Deepa Das Acevedo takes readers on a backstage tour of tenure-stream academia to reveal hidden dynamics and obstacles. She challenges the common belief that tenure is only important for the protection of academic freedom. Instead, she argues that the security and autonomy provided by tenure are also essential to the performance of work that students, administrators, parents, politicians, and taxpayers value. Going further, Das Acevedo shows that tenure exists on a spectrum of comparable employment contracts, and she debunks the notion that tenure warps the incentives of professors. Ultimately, The War on Tenure demonstrates that the job security tenure provides is not nearly as unusual, undesirable, or unwarranted as critics claim. In this episode, I sit down with Yurany Roa Sanchez, the daughter of Elias Roa and Bellanid Sanchez, the owners of Finca Tamana in Colombia. She grew up surrounded by coffee, first on her parents' original farm in Acevedo and later at Finca Tamana in Pital, Huila. Now 26 years old, Yurany has a degree in International Business and although her original plan was not to work with coffee, she eventually changed her mind. Today, she manages her own farm while also helping her parents at Finca Tamana and assisting me with my farm, Finca el Suelo, which is located right next to theirs. To manage Finca el Suelo, Yurany works closely with Lalo Perez Varona and Ana Tejedo from Biofilia, who has been supporting us with knowhow since March this year. In this episode, we talk about what Yurani have done so far, the challenges she has faced in coffee production this year – such as finding enough workers during harvest – and her ambitions for the future. Yurany also shares her pride in her parents and their constant drive to improve and develop, as well as her own plans for her farm, Finca Tamana, and Finca el Suelo. Music by my uncle Jens Wendelboe.

Send us a textThe Poet X was Elizabeth Acevedo's breakout novel, winning the Printz and Pura Belpre awards and becoming the target of many challenges and even a lawsuit attempting to keep it off of school shelves. We are standing firmly behind this book, even if it reduced Heather and Darlene to tears and maybe hasn't aged as well as it could have when it comes to Drake. We adore Xiomara's strength and resilience as she confronts family troubles, experiences a crisis of faith, weathers harassment at school, and navigates first love. We're discussing the ubiquity of harassment as a teen girl, the impacts of our parents' baggage, and whether Twin's going to have the kind of happy ending we are optimistic about for Xiomara. We're also taking a pretty strange quiz to find out what kind of poets we'd be, but really, we'd all probably just prefer to be really fab slam poets like Xiomara. These Books Made Me is a podcast about the literary heroines who shaped us and is a product of the Prince George's County Memorial Library System podcast network.
