Send us a textIn 1982 Arnold Schwarzenegger stepped into the sandals of one of pulp's most celebrated heroes and, what was likely the most on point casting in the history of cinema, became legend. Conan the Barbarian. There is a common quote from that film, bandied about by fans, but it's not my favorite. My favorite quote from the film and my favorite scene come at the end of the picture.“Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that two stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Crom... so grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!”To me, that was ConanOver the years the Conan archetype has been shoehorned into many games, Of course I'm looking at the very poor attempt in D&D called the Barbarian class. You might like the class, but it's not Conan, and make no mistake it was supposed to be Conan when it was introduced. In 1985 TSR tried to cash in with its own Conan RPG. In 1989 Steve Jackson Games came out with a Conan supplement for GURPS. In 2004 Mongoose Publishing launched their Conan: The Roleplaying Game which was a d20 variant. And in 2017 Modiphius released a 2d20 version called Conan: Adventures in an Age Undreamed Of.All of these games had various levels of success. I mean it's Conan, it doesn't take much for people to pick up the book and several of them were held in high regard. Personally I never found one that really clicked for me. I gave the GURPS version a try, but it just felt a little flat. Then Monolith Board Games Kickstarted Conan the Hyborian Age. This rules light system approached the barbarian and Robert E. Howards tales differently then the other versions. In Conan the Hyborian Age the story mattered. The rules were simple and left the door open for narrative to push the story. Or at least that's what the Kickstarter said.So I backed it and when I downloaded a copy of the core rulebook something special happened.I got excited. I don't know what it was, maybe it was the fantastic art, maybe it was a focus on Robert E. Howard's stories, maybe it was the very simplistic combat system, maybe it was the magic system that pulled your own life to fuel the spells, or maybe they just found the perfect combination.I had to play this thing. So I hit up the Thursday night group and said “What do you guys think about playing a Conan game?”The rest as they say is history. On this episode Mike, Christina and I are going to talk about the new Conan: They Hyborian Age TTRPG. We will talk about the core rules, the book itself and the good, the great, and the bad we've come across after playing it for a couple of months. And just to give you a little heads up for the episode.I absolutely love this game.Christina, let's start with you. What's your history with Conan and what did you initially think when I suggested playing it?[Kick to Christina]Mike, same question, what did you think about Conan going into the game?[Kick to Mike]

The upcoming release of the new Robin Hood-themed tabletop roleplaying game, The Hooded Man, provides me the opportunity to indulge in some discussion about ttrpgs, a topic that I've been closely connected to for many years.Graham Rose, writer of The Hooded Man, joins me to discuss his game, his sources of inspiration, what he wanted to convey about what it would be like to simulate about being a medieval outlaw, and we go through the process of making a character for the game. A process that was both faster and more evocative than most other ttrpgs. After the interview with Graham Rose, I'm also joined by Ben Curley and Theo Papke to get their thoughts on the Hood: Swashbuckling Adventures in Sherwood campaign that I've been running for them. For more on The Hooded Manhttps://www.ospreypublishing.com/uk/hooded-man-9781472870223/For Hood: Swashbuckling Adventures in Sherwoodhttp://www.fearlightgames.com/hood.htmlFor Sherwood: A Game of Outlaws & Arcanahttps://r-rook.itch.io/sherwoodFor the games from Wicked-Cleverhttps://www.wicked-clever.com/For more on the Rollmaster Robin Hood bookhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Hood_the_Role_Playing_CampaignFor the interview from Allen W Wright about the GURPS supplementhttps://www.boldoutlaw.com/robspot/gurps-robin-hood.htmlFor Katherine Kerr's AD&D 1st edition stats for Robin Hood from Dragon Magazinehttp://pied.nu/dragon/files/Drmg055.pdfFor more from Into the Greenwood:www.instagram.com/intogreenwood/www.threads.net/@intogreenwoodbsky.app/profile/intogreenwood.bsky.socialwww.facebook.com/intogreenwoodTo support the podcast go to:www.patreon.com/IntoGreenwoodorwww.buymeacoffee.com/intogreenwoodOur selected charity: Trees, Water & PeopleInto the Greenwood is produced by Thaddeus PapkeTheme music is by Plastic3intogreenwood@gmail.comSupport the show

In this episode, we're tackling one of the most controversial topics in tabletop gaming—and no, we're not talking about "edition wars" or "alignment arguments." The hosts explore the art and science of crunchy game mechanics, diving into why complex systems aren't the enemy of good storytelling but rather a powerful tool for creating memorable narratives.Whether you're a seasoned GM who's embraced the mathematical beauty of detailed systems or a newer Game Master wondering if all those modifiers and subsystems are worth the effort, this episode delivers passionate defense with the kind of hard-won wisdom that only comes from years of rolling dice and crunching numbers.Special guest Derek Kane-Gervais is interviewed as we dive deep into the world of rules-heavy RPGs and explore how probability curves, character optimization, and mechanical complexity can enhance rather than hinder the storytelling experience.Topics Covered:What "crunch" really means and why it's not a dirty word in TTRPG designThe mathematics of drama: how probability creates tension and uncertaintyCharacter building as creative expression and problem-solving artistrySystems that do crunch right: Pathfinder 2e, GURPS, and ShadowrunDebunking "crunch kills roleplay" and other common misconceptionsThe social contract of complexity: when to embrace or avoid crunchy gamesTeaching complex systems to new players without overwhelming themHow constraints and rules fuel creativity rather than restrict itSo grab your dice, your favorite beverage, and maybe dust off that character optimizer spreadsheet—we're diving into every reason why mathematical storytelling deserves more love!Join host Nick Perron as he draws from his expertise in the TTRPG space to explore the cutting edge of game design with creators who are pushing boundaries and making magic happen one dice roll at a time.→ Tabletopped's Stuff:→ Tabletopped's website→ Patreon→ Instagram→ TwitterCheck us out on Patreon! Send us a textI think it was the James Bond Roleplaying game, or maybe it was Twilight 2000. My memory is a little fuzzy on this one, but there was a point in my roleplaying past where I started running adventures set in the modern era,And I loved it.Traditionally table top roleplaying games have focused on the Fantasy. Tolkien's world or some variation of it has the been the centerpiece for TTRPGs from the beginning and many of you have never ventured outside of that setting. Other games over time have added settings some historical like Call of Cthulhu, some futuristic like Traveller, but many have just avoided the modern era. While there are a lot of games out there that do have a modern setting most of you don't play them. Games like Delta Green, Twilight 2000, Feng Shei, World of Darkness, Everyday Heroes, GURPS, Kids on Bikes, Double Zero, Masks and Kult are all built on modern settings and I would argue that instead of being afraid of running games in a modern setting you should embrace it. I find it much easier to run games in modern settings and with just a few tweaks here and there you can have some amazing adventures. On this episode Christina and I are going to talk about running games in Modern settings and give you some tips and tricks that can help you keep your games running smoothly.Christina was Masks the first game you ever ran in a modern setting?

Send us a textIn 2003 Shane Hensley and Pinnacle Entertainment released a brand-new generic roleplaying game. The game was called Savage Worlds and it kinda made a splash. The game emphasized speed of play over detail. That may not seem like much today, but at the time it was revolutionary. You see Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 was also released in 2003, which would go on to birth Pathfinder. Steve Jackson Games had 5 years' worth of source books available for their Generic Universal Roleplaying System. The market at that time was filled with games like Hero, Shadowrun, and Rolemaster,In other words, in 2003 we were at the height of crunch in our roleplaying games. And when I say crunch I am not talking about the candy bar.I'm talking about games with rules, hundreds of pages of rules. I'm talking about math, lots and lots of math. I'm talking about tables to cross-reference everything your characters might do. You see at the turn of the century most TTRPG's were focused on simulations. Trying to make the games as real as possible and to do that, you gotta lean hard into the rules.Shane Hensely changed that with Savage Worlds. By focusing on streamlining the systems and making sure your games were moving fast and your players where having fun he opened the doors for massive changes in how we see our roleplaying games.I would argue that Savage Worlds help bring about D&D 5e, Blades in the Dark, Powered by the Apocalypse, Mork Borg, and basically anything today that is considered rules light.I'm not the only one that thinks Savage Worlds is an impressive game. The game received the 2003 Origin Gamers' Choice Award for best role-playing game. Scott Taylor for Black Gate in 2013 rated Savage Worlds as Honorable Mention #1 in the top ten role-playing games of all time. But now I have to admit my own stupidity. When Savage Worlds came out in 2003 I wasn't interested. I saw it as a direct attack against my favorite game GURPS so I lifted my nose and kept playing GURPS. It wasn't until recently that I started diving into Savage Worlds and man did I miss the boat on this one.In this episode we are going to review Savage Worlds and talk about the game, the game system, why it's cool and why you should give it a shot.Mike, when did you first play Savage Worlds?[Kick to Mike]Christina, What about you?[Kick to Christina]

In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts tackle the treacherous terrain of transitioning from one TTRPG system to another—whether by choice, necessity, or that one player who just won't stop talking about Pathfinder 2e. They discuss how to manage the shift from familiar mechanics to new rulesets, how to keep your players engaged through the change, and why it's okay if not everyone wants to come along for the ride. The crew dives into the logistical and emotional aspects of change: how to gracefully retire a campaign, how to choose your next system, and how to pitch it to your group without sounding like a game mechanic evangelist. They offer strategies for onboarding players to a new system, converting existing characters, and balancing the group's excitement (or resistance) to change. Whether you're upgrading from D&D 5e, diving into indie systems, or dragging your friends into the crunchy chaos of GURPS, this episode gives you the tools, stories, and cautionary tales to make the leap a little less daunting—and a lot more fun.

It's time to get our most ambitious campaign yet underway! In the wake of brutal oppression and bloody rebellion, a coalition of different species and cultures attempts to repurpose the tools of violence for discovery and diplomacy. One such tool, Captain River La Rosa, is being led to his first command under the Alliance's peacetime navy, and he's about to find that just being a former Hegemony soldier isn't enough to make him the oddest officer aboard. But the whole motley crew will soon have much more to worry about than first impressions... Content warning for discussion of imperialism, corpses, and blood. What happens if we lean back into the roots of our hobby - which for me is largely the 1980s - and realise that the kind of roleplaying we enjoy the most is in fact the Old-School variety? But instead of landing back in the realm of Dungeons & Dragons, what if we find the kind of system that emphasises the roleplay is actually found in the emergence of a game designed to encourage just that: roleplay? In 1985, Steve Jackson Games published the combat system from their forthcoming roleplaying game system and they named it, “Man-to-Man”. A year later in 1986, they published the full game system as it then existed. It's name was GURPS - the Generic Universal Role-Playing System. 40 years later, GURPS is still around… and so is that earlier incarnation. And it turns out that it's a far more accessible and playable role-playing system than I ever imagined. Thanks to Steve Jackson Games for continuing to keep GURPS Third Edition in print:Amazon POD: amazon.co.uk/GURPS-Basic-Set-Third-Revised/dp/1556348266/Warehouse23 PDF: warehouse23.com/products/gurps-basic-set-third-edition-revisedBig thanks to Spencer and Evil Jeff for calling in with their experiences and thoughts!Game on!Roleplay Rescue Details:Voice Message:speakpipe.com/roleplayrescuePatreon:patreon.com/rpgrescue Email:roleplayrescue@pm.meBlogroleplayrescue.com Bluesky Social:https://bsky.app/profile/ubiquitousrat.bsky.socialMeWe:https://mewe.com/p/roleplayrescueLogo and artwork by MJ Hiblen:https://www.patreon.com/MJHiblenART/ Hosted on Acast. Send us a textLet's Make a GameWhen I first got into this hobby it was all about the game for me. The rules, the books, the miniatures, the dice, and of course the adventure.Like most people once I settled on my game of choice…GURPS of course. I couldn't get enough. GURPS 3rd Edition seemed to come out with a new sourcebook every month and my bulging bookshelf can attest to how many of those things I bought. I played the games and I loved the games, but I never thought about making the games. Then one day I saw on Illuminati Online, Steve Jackson games website, that they were taking submissions for a new source book. GURPS COPS.Perfect.Well, I had to throw my hat into the ring.It was my first attempt at writing and there is a reason you have never read a published book from me. (side note: I have published a fair number of professional articles for books and magazines since then, but that was definitely filled with first timer mistakes). The process changed me.Prior to that I never even thought of creating my own thing. But since then, that's all I do. Homebrew rules, homebrew characters, and homebrew worldbuilding. But I am far from a game designer. And then I met Christina and Mike. The real game designers.Between the two of them they have a half dozen published games and based on the conversations I get to overhear there are more on the horizon.Recently we discussed IPs that should be made into roleplaying games and the more I thought about it the more I thought it would be an interesting look behind the scenes of game design. So, for this episode Mike, Christina and I are going to design a game. And that game is the Godzilla Roleplaying Game.In full discloser I didn't just now surprise Mike and Christina with this topic although I was sorely tempted. I gave them a heads up it was coming last week, so they have had a week to let the idea percolate. With that said, where do we start Mike?
After last week's unexpectedly pleasant outing, this week we'll be driving Conan like we stole him, making as many rash and foolish decisions as we can. Will Conan live to see the end? Will anyone? We're shifting gears this week, away from Dragon Warriors in favor of another venerable TTRPG system: GURPS! Specifically, we're diving into one of the solo scenarios published in the late 80s for the GURPS Conan line, this one based on one of the best (in our humble opinion) of the original Conan stories, "The Queen of the Black Coast"! Back at the beginning of 2025, I decided that I wanted to double-down on my mastery of GURPS as the roleplaying game system that I actually consistently enjoy. Alongside that I decided that I wanted to take on the challenge of developing my own science-fiction space-based game. This would involve creating a sector of space and working out the basis for different approaches to SF play within it. With a month of anxious dithering behind me, I found inspiration while sitting with the face-to-face group prior to continuing our current Cthulhu investigation: one of the players expressed, not for the first time, a desire to play something SF. Given my realisation that I have transitioned towards a more improvisational style at the table, I determined that it would be fun to create a framework within which we might play. This episode is drawn from the play notes that I made one Sunday in February 2025, which were then posted on the Roleplay Rescue blog at roleplayrescue.com. Why share them here? Well, firstly they turned out to be a truly enlightening series of notes for me as a potential science-fiction GM, unlocking many of the doors to playing SF that I had experienced being closed tight ever since my earliest experiences with Traveller in the late 1970s and early 1980s.Big thanks to Carl D and Brian for taking the time to record some messages.Game on!New Frontiers Map:https://roleplayrescue.com/2025/02/06/new-frontiers-part-v/Roleplay Rescue Details:Voice Message:speakpipe.com/roleplayrescuePatreon:patreon.com/rpgrescue Email:roleplayrescue@pm.meBlogroleplayrescue.com Bluesky Social:https://bsky.app/profile/ubiquitousrat.bsky.socialMeWe:https://mewe.com/p/roleplayrescueRoleplay Rescue Theme by Jon Cohen from Tale of the Manticore:https://taleofthemanticore.podbean.com/Logo and artwork by MJ Hiblen:https://www.patreon.com/MJHiblenART/ Hosted on Acast. Today we've got something special—two deep dives into the world of magic and role-playing! We sit down with Douglas Rushkoff—media theorist, writer, and host of the Team Human podcast—to explore how RPGs, especially Mage: The Ascension, serve as tools for reality manipulation and self-discovery. We talk about the changing face of magic in society, its impact on public figures, and how Storytellers can weave magical sensibilities into their campaigns. Then, we chat with Richard Metzger, lifelong explorer of the occult and host of the Magic Show. He takes us on a journey through the cultural evolution of magic, its place in pop culture, and intriguing ideas like radionics that could bring a whole new layer to modern RPGs.
