I loved it so much that when today's guest, Howard Fuchs proprietor of the Smokin' Sandy Pineapple food truck, rang me up, we came up with an idea that was similar, but different.Today's episode is the inverse of a “Venue Preview.” Instead, it is a “Venue Remembrance." Howard was in college in the late-80s and early-90s in Ithaca, New York. During his time there, he saw Phish no less than 5 times in the now-legendary club, The Haunt in Ithaca. The Haunt no longer exists, but Howard recalls specific details of seeing Phish at least five times in the 1990 calendar year. Today's episode is a look back at those five Phish shows (although no audio exists from one of the shows).More than that is a look back at the city of Ithaca, its natural beauty, and its socially conscious attitude that pervaded the community for decades, including the time period we're discussing today. Now, for those of us who are just here for the music, there's another layer to this story.1990 was a tremendous year for Phish. They were regularly venturing out of New England, mostly to college campuses and small clubs in the northeast. At the same time, they were recording Lawn Boy while still writing new material that would eventually appear on A Picture of Nectar. All the while, they were grinding it out in their van, playing these venues, most of the time without recordings or even surviving setlists. These are shows we know happened, but don't know anything about. And more often than not, these venues are no longer standing.That's why today's conversation with Howard is such a treat. Not only does he wax poetic about The Haunt, but we get to be a fly on the wall during a time of the band's history that, I would guess, most listeners of this podcast did not experience. As a side bonus, we get to hear the band's evolution in real time through the lens of The Haunt, which they played 5 times, from January to November of 1990, before moving on to the beginning of their small theater era.So let's journey to the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. Herr Fuchs möchte sich ein Winterspiel bauen. Dafür braucht er einige Pappkartons, die er vor seinem Bau sammelt. Frau Elster ärgert sich über diese Unordnung. Sie fängt einfach an, alles aufzuräumen. Dabei bleibt sie in einem der Kartons stecken. Nun kann nur noch Herr Fuchs helfen. Wie abgehängt ist Deutschland wirklich? „Die USA sind ganz starker Vorreiter, UK hat aufgeholt und Deutschland ist stark im Hintergrund und muss extrem viel aufholen. Das Investmentvolumen im Venture Capital 2025 ist in den USA 230 Milliarden US-Dollar gewesen. Eine riesen Summe! UK ist kleiner und hat weniger Einwohner als Deutschland. Dort haben wir eine Investitionssumme von 22 Milliarden Euro und in Deutschland sind wir nur bei 6,5 Milliarden Euro. Auch bei den Unicorns gibt es ein starkes Gefälle”, sagt Fabian Fuchs. Der Startup-Gründer und Investor - der selbst in Deutschland, Großbritannien und den USA gelebt und gearbeitet hat - weiter: „Du willst sehr gute Leute für ein Startup, aber gleichzeitig konkurrierst du mit großen Firmen wie Google oder Facebook, die sehr hohe Gehälter zahlen können. While Shakespeare was reshaping English drama, a parallel theatrical revolution was unfolding in Spain. During the Spanish Golden Age, playwright Lope de Vega pioneered the comedia nueva, a bold new dramatic form that broke classical rules in favor of fast-paced plots, emotional intensity, and popular appeal. In this episode, scholar and translator Barbara Fuchs shares how the theatrical innovations of Lope de Vega, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Tirso de Molina, Ana Caro Mallén de Soto, and others, including a three-act structure, blended genres, and complex female roles, helped redefine early modern theater and influenced the kinds of stories told on the English stage. Fuchs traces the rich cultural exchange between Spain and England and the work that she is doing now with Diversifying the Classics to bring plays in Spanish from both sides of the Atlantic to new audiences. Fuchs also discusses her adaptation for young audiences of de Vega's Fuente Ovejuna, a powerful story of collective resistance, whichwill be featured at the Folger's Reading Room Festival on Saturday, January 24. Professor Fuchs' recent books include Knowing Fictions: Picaresque Reading in the Early Modern Hispanic World (Penn 2021); The Courage to Right a Woman's Wrongs (Juan de la Cuesta 2021), a collaborative translation of Ana Caro's Valor, agravio y mujer; and The Quest for Certainty in Early Modern Europe (Toronto 2020), co-edited with Mercedes García-Arenal. She is also one of the editors for the Norton Anthology of World Literature (2012, 2018). Her Theater of Lockdown: Digital and Distanced Performance in a time of Pandemic, one of the first studies of how theater was transformed by COVID-19, was published by Methuen in September 2021. She is currently working on a translation and critical edition of Ginés Pérez de Hita's Las guerras civiles de Granada with Payton Phillips Quintanilla. In 2021, Professor Fuchs served as President of the Modern Language Association. She was recently awarded the inaugural “Premio Ñ” from the Instituto Cervantes, for the promotion of Spanish language and culture.
