In this episode, we conspire together to take out one of the worst evils of the 20th century in Black Orchestra! Black Orchestra is a 2016 cooperative game for 1 to 5 players designed by Phillip duBarry with art by Lucas Soriano published by Tabletop Tycoon. In Black Orchestra, players take on the role of conspirators in Nazi Germany working together to assassinate Adolf Hitler. The game is based on actual attempts by members of Hitler's military and civilians to take out the man they saw as an incredible threat to their country. The game is a rollercoaster full of close calls and near misses. Our military history correspondent (age 13) approves! How do you start a Board Game Group? Well, we have the man who started our local group on the podcast tonight and we are going to pick his brain about everything Board Game Group and Community Group related. Please welcome our friend Rhys to Episode 34 of the Podcast. Before we get to our discussion topic for today we will talk about a couple of games that have piqued our interest over the past week. Rhys got to try and be a hero of WWII by taking out Hitler in Black Orchestra, Damien teaches his kids the importance of chain reactions in Potion Explosion and Neeber tries to bend the force to his will in Star Wars: The Deck Building Game. Finally, we look at one of the most simple dice racing games on the market that brings a smile to every one of the host's faces in Cubitos. A great discussion and fun times are coming your way. They were a small group of conspirators who risked their lives by plotting relentlessly to obstruct and destroy the Third Reich from within. The Gestapo nicknamed this shadowy confederation of traitors the “Black Orchestra.” This is their tension-filled story. As the “Final Solution” unfolds, a loose network of German military officers, diplomats, politicians, and civilians are doing everything in their power to undermine the Third Reich from the inside: reporting troop movements to the Allies, feeding disinformation to the Nazi high command, plotting to assassinate Adolf Hitler, and more. The Gestapo nicknames this shadowy confederation of traitors the “Black Orchestra.” Its players include Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a dissident Lutheran pastor, and his brother-in-law Hans von Dohnanyi, a staff attorney at the Abwehr, the German military intelligence service. In this tension-filled narrative, Tom Dunkel traces the perilous movements of these “white knights” as they and their families face constant danger of being exposed and executed. Some act out of moral outrage and patriotism. Some want to atone for their own Nazi sins. When their treasonous activities are finally discovered, Hitler's SS and the Gestapo are hell-bent on taking bloody revenge as the end of the war rapidly approaches and lives hang in the balance. White Knights in the Black Orchestra: The Extraordinary Story of the Germans Who Resisted Hitler (Hachette Books, 2021) is a tautly written, meticulously reported account of men and women heroically resisting Hitler's ruthless regime. It packs the punch of the best espionage thrillers, but the cat-and-mouse drama and plot twists are grounded firmly in fact. This is a stirring story of people willing to risk all by doing the right thing in a country gone mad, a story that may prompt readers to ask themselves “What would I have done?” AJ Woodhams hosts the "War Books" podcast, where he interviews today's best authors writing about war-related topics. We play a round to refresh ourselves, grab some CONTENT (TM) and sit down to hash out our thoughts on it. King of the Shill highly recommends Black Orchestra.

They say nothing goes according to plan. That was true of the dozens of assassination plots against Adolf Hitler while he led Nazi Germany during the 1930s and 1940s. And it’s also often true of the plots enacted by players in Black Orchestra, the cooperative game inspired by those events. We talk with history writer Nikola Budanovich, who walks us through three real-life plots against Hitler. And game designer Philip duBarry tells us how he questioned whether the game would ever get made.Read a full transcript of this episode.Immersed is produced by Cardboard Edison.Special thanks to Philip duBarry, Nikola Budanovic, Jaime Dooling-Perrelli, and Erik Herrington.Editing assistance by Eric Booth.Music:self-fulfilling prophecy - michael bayer by Lloyd Rodgers is licensed under a Public Domain Mark 1.0 License.sultan cintré by Cuicuitte is licensed under a Attribution License.Talk to me by Loyalty Freak Music is licensed under a CC0 1.0 Universal License.Sa rumeur remontait l’escalier by cuicuitte (feat renoncule) / comme ça is licensed under a CC0 1.0 Universal License.Sky 7 : Debauched Dance With The Self by Monplaisir is licensed under a CC0 1.0 Universal License.Geheimnisse des Dritten Reichs by Evil Bear Boris is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License.Traffic by Kai Engel is licensed under a Attribution License.Bouncy Gypsy Beats by John Bartmann is licensed under a CC0 1.0 Universal License.Clover by Little Glass Men is licensed under a Attribution License.Sponsors:Fireside Games, FiresideGames.comSmirk and Dagger Games, SmirkAndDagger.comHABA USA Games, HABAusa.comVan Ryder Games, VanRyderGames.comFormal Ferret Games, FormalFerretGames.comIndie Boards and Cards, IndieBoardsAndCards.comBrotherwise Games, BrotherwiseGames.comBreaking Games, BreakingGames.comFor sponsorship opportunities, or to send a game to be considered for a future episode, email suzanne@cardboardedison.com.Cardboard Edison is supported by our patrons on Patreon.ADVISERS: Justin Gibbs, Peter C. Black Orchestra is a cooperative game about the attempts to assassinate Hitler. It's definitely a unique theme, so we review how it plays. We also discuss the movies we watched this summer, starting from Infinity War and going to Crazy Rich Asians. And we talk about how we keep our collection in just two cabinets.
Chad, Adam and Ryan discuss the topic they've been tiptoeing around for months - co-operative games! From Pandemic onward this style of board game has taken the world by storm, and is distinctively different from the standard competitive game. We discuss trends in the genre as well as our personal picks from the classification. Afterwards, we discuss a recent co-operative hit, Black Orchestra! This game puts players in the role of German citizens during World War II, attempting to assassinate Hitler from within Germany's ranks. What does this game bring to the standard "4 actions then event" co-op genre? Listen to find out! Finally we wrap up with some recent plays, including Tiny Epic Galaxies, Star Trek Frontiers, and a few roll'n'writes.
Alert! Keep your ears open for a exclusive discount code from our sponsor, Mr. Dice Guy, available until September 9th! Ryan, Adam and Chad take advantage of the recent GenCon released to talk about innovative design in board games. Is the future of board gaming bright, or just full of derivatives? Can't it be both? The feature game for this episode is one of the most innovative and popular releases from 2014 - Dead of Winter. This zombie game stands apart from the others as the first one to really "get it" (according to Adam) - find out what makes it so unique in a sea of flesh-eating clones. Finally we discuss some games we've played/are going to play, including Factory Funner, Dungeon Lords, Black Orchestra, Seal Team Flix, and Pax Porfiriana.
The post Första intrycket, del 16 – Black Orchestra appeared first on Vems tur är det?.
Anthony and Jason welcome back Dr. Patrick Rael, History Professor at Bowdoin College to discuss difficult themes in board games, this week focusing on World War II. Specifically, we dig into the politics of managing the war with Churchill: The Big Three Struggle for Peace, and what it means to use Hitler and Nazi imagery in board games with Black Orchestra. The first half of the episode, we'll provide a brief summary and review of both games, and then dive into a more detailed discussion about the use of this theme in games, how it can be done well, when it is not done well, and what gamers and game designers and publishers should be thinking about. In Black Orchestra, you are a member of a conspiracy that plots to kill Hitler before and during WW 2. You do this by gaining enough motivation and courage to go through with the deed without drawing too much suspicion to yourself and your compatriots.
