The Morins and Lessins discuss the urgent questions Hamas' terrorism against Israel raises for tech companies. Plus, how leaders should—and should not—respond to the attacks. Show Notes [0:00] Intro [0:36] Opening Discussion [2:03] It is a very important and troubling time in the world. Sharing some of our thoughts as a group. [2:10] Impossible to not talk about the Israel and Hamas situation. [2:15] We are not a political podcast nor are we political experts. We are tech people. [2:25] This podcast is going to be about the tech side of it and the important tech stories about it. [2:30] We are floored and upset. The situation with Hamas is beyond comprehension. They are a terrorist organization. What they've done, the atrocities, are beyond pale. [2:49] We wish the Israeli people the best in doing the extremely painful and hard work ahead. Which clearly has to be done. [3:03] On the tech front, 3 things on the agenda to talk about: 1. Funding and LPs in this era: As a company or a fund how do you think about who's funding you and who you're funding in light of the geopolitical situation? 2. Social Networks and News: Section 230, the US election in 14 months, AI is now a thing. 3. Tech Leaders and the interesting thing about who can say what on the internet. [4:46] Debate about tech leaders' statements on the situation. Note of the lack of strong condemnation of Hamas among tech leaders. [13:15] Suggestion that tech leaders may be hesitant to speak out strongly due to security concerns. [15:52] Debate on social networks, news, misinformation, and AI. Prediction that Section 230 is dead. [19:47] Losing the "town square" into encrypted group chats and why social media will never be the same. [26:25] Idea that an alternative social network for “actual relationships” should exist. [27:23] Proposal that we go back to where we were before: “don't trust the network, trust the individual.” [27:36] Idea to build clubs of trust and community among Celebrity Influencers to protect the commons. [28:40] Is there an opportunity for quality journalism? [28:54] Skepticism that news organizations can regain trust due to business model issues. [30:33] The Rock is the answer. [30:46] Discussion on founders, VCs, and LPs in this era. Who are you ok making money for? [34:53] Agreement that transparency enables the individual founder or venture capitalist to make their own decisions about who they're making money for. [36:31] Note that pushing VCs for transparency has worked for issues like diversity. California signed a law this week. [38:32] Wrap Up

He joins Tom to discuss a recent individual's complaint with the Austrian DPA, in which the response was incomplete and the individual took their case to an Austrian Federal Administrative Court. Jonathan shares that this tactic is being used by those under regulatory and governmental investigation. Tom and Jonathan's insight is invaluable for staying informed of the most up-to-date news on SARs. Key Highlights · Challenges of Filing Data Protection Complaints in Austria [00:057] · Legal Implications of Acquiring a Business Under Regulatory or Governmental Investigation [00:11:03] · Ending a Podcast[00:15:50] Notable Quotes 1. "We know that SARS are onerous, and it may be that the GIST route might be a way of saving some of the effort involved, not in searching for data necessarily, but in the whole redaction task, which is substantial because obviously you have to redact records so as not to expose the data of other individuals in many cases." 2. "And the officer stream result also seems to be in accordance with guidance from other DPAs as well. So probably the right decisions in both cases but obviously still some complexity involved in dealing with hours." 3. "We've definitely seen [SARs] in the context of regulatory or other governmental investigation. There are the cases in the public domain, for example, which is a case, which involves Russian oligarchs battling it out in the UK courts after group a investigated group b." 4. "And as I say, we've used the gist route previously. We know that people have complained to the ICR to other regulators but so far, that hasn't been anything that regulators criticized in the cases that we've been involved with."" Listen to Life with GDPR for the most up-to-date and helpful advice about cyber security and ransomware. Key Highlights · Sanctions levied against Russian cyber-attack gangs [00:01:28] · Steps to take to Protect Against Ransomware Attacks [00:06:12] · The Dangers of Ransomware Attacks [00:10:49] Notable Quotes 1. "Sanctioning ransomware gangs is not especially new. The US has done it before, but this is a move that's a giant move from the UK and the US to sanction 7 Russia based individuals." 2. "It's good business sense to payers because x is less than y. So just because GDPR is on the agenda of ransomware gangs, it obviously means that organizations have to take that much more seriously because ransomware gangs trying to push GDPR figures." 3. "Have a plan to deal with ransomware. It is inevitable a ball that somebody will target you. Maybe create a playbox so that you can work through key considerations in add advance." 4. "You're only as strong as your weaker link. And oftentimes, it is suppliers, HR providers, payroll providers, outsourced sales solutions that are a real area of vulnerability."" Jonathan Armstrong and Tom Fox return for another episode of the award-winning Life with GDPR. Data protection has become a priority for many authorities with the French regulator, CNIL, recently issuing fines and penalties to Microsoft for not complying with the data protection laws. Changes were made to their practices in March 2022, and similar action was taken against Google and Amazon. In this episode, we discuss the regulatory landscape for cookies which has become difficult for businesses to maneuver, requiring board-level oversight of data privacy, data protection, and data security. Together, these measures are deemed necessary in order to mitigate the biggest risks to organizations. Max Schrems and his pressure group were two of the key adjutants and had filed a substantial number of complaints. This eventually led to a large fine at the end of 2022, announced this month, from CNIL, the French Data Protection Regulator, against Microsoft, for €60 million. This fine highlighted the fact that cookies had been on the agenda for many Data Protection Authorities and the severity of the consequences for not following GDPR requirements. The implications of this case will have a lasting effect on the relations between European Data Protection Authorities and corporations, as well as the resources necessary to stay compliant. Highlights include: · [00:04:16] Microsoft's Changes to Cookie Practices · [00:09:21] Navigating Regulatory Landscapes for Businesses · [00:14:21] The Importance of Data Privacy Board Oversight Resources For more information on the issues raised in this podcast, check out the Cordery Compliance, News Section. The DPC also ordered Meta to change its data protection practices within three months. Those changes may have more lasting effect on Meta than the fines. The two fines come in at fifth and sixth places respectively in the largest GDPR fines of all time . Some of the highlights include: 1. What were the facts? 2. Why this matter has far wider implications that simply Big Tech. 3. Max Schrems says this is a huge blow for Meta. 4. The convoluted appeal process going forward. 5. Lessons learned. Jonathan Armstrong and Tom Fox return for another episode of the award-winning Life with GDPR. In this episode, we discuss the recent conviction of Joe Sullivan former CISO at Uber for his role in hiding a data breach which hit the company. Sullivan was convicted in the US in October 2022 in connection with an investigation into a ransomware attack on Uber in 2016. However, we look at the conviction from the GDPR and UK perspective and ask does it portend potential liability for CISOs and CCOs in the EU and UK. For instance, does this mean that there are likely to be more prosecutions against executives? And could we see similar prosecutions in Europe? For a more detailed discussion and links to the case, check out the Cordery Compliance News Alert on the case, which you can find in the link below. Some of the highlights include: 1. What were the facts? 2. Was Sullivan guilty of negligence or intentional conduct? 3. Why were prior Uber convictions so significant? 4. What happens next? 5. Could this lead to more prosecutions of executives? 6. What does this mean under GDPR and in the UK? Welcome back to the “Neuroscience Meets SEL Podcast” this is Andrea Samadi. This interview will be broadcast on YouTube as well as on the regular podcast channel, so be sure to click on the link if you would like to view the video. In this episode we have a special guest, Ron Hall, the Executive Director of Valley Day School[i] in Morristown, Pennsylvania to discuss how his school improved behavioral outcomes with a neuroscientific approach. If you take one look at Valley Day Schools website in the News Section you can see the forward-thinking nature of this school that is applying cutting edge technology in PE class that combines movement with intellect, challenging students to think while they move. They are using virtual reality to travel to different regions of the world and develop empathy. Teachers hold community meetings with students to get to the root cause of behavioral problems over punishment, and they teach their students about table etiquette, and social/emotional intelligence though advanced technology tools.Welcome Ron, thanks for joining us today. When I saw the article written about your focus on social support rather than the old punitive approach, I knew I had to contact you so you could share your experiences to help other schools that might be thinking of implementing a program like yours. The more I read on your In the News Section of your website, the more excited I got to speak with you to learn more. I know that summer time is a time to get some rest to rejuvenate for the next year, so I do appreciate you speaking with me during the summer break to help others to see some of your strategies. Let’s dive into the questions… In your recent interview “Lessons in Leadership: How an Alternative School Improved Behavioral Outcomes with a Neuroscience Approach”[ii] from educationdive.com you mentioned how you were interested in using an understanding of the brain to facilitate learning prior to being hired at Valley Day School over 15 years ago. It was just a bit longer than that when I was a teacher in the classroom and looking for something like this to help me manage a classroom of behavioral students. My principal sent me to a Tribes workshop, but this was not even close to what I needed. What made you look at brain-based learning back then and what did you discover? We know that 15 years ago there wasn’t the research around social and emotional learning that we now know impacts student achievement and behavior. What do you think is different now than 15 years ago with schools using these strategies to help improve student behavior that we know is tied into achievement? How are you teaching these skills? What happens if some staff do not buy in, or you see some outliers? How do you handle that? Can you explain the demographics of Valley Day School so that other schools can learn from your experience and model your approach? When I looked up your website valleyday.org right on your home page banner under “Cutting Edge Technology” I see a student on a computer with a brain jumping out of the screen. It looks like augmented reality (something I have been following for some time now). What program is that? How are you raising funds for such innovative tools? Where do you see neuroeducation going in the next 5 years and I’m really curious what’s on your roadmap for your next steps in innovation? I really do wish I knew these strategies back when I was in the classroom. It was probably one of the reasons I burnt out of the profession. I know that you believe that to “effectively manage behavior and improve learning, all staff members need to have a thorough understanding of how the brain operates.” Where would you suggest a school begin when looking to implement a neuroscientific approach to prevent teacher burnout? What are the most important components that teachers should grasp about the brain? Ron suggests starting with Harry Wong’s book, The First Day of School.[iii] What do you think students need to know about how the brain works? Teach students how the brain works. “If students understand how the brain works, they can gain greater control over their personal growth. Therefore, we teach all students how the brain works. The student will learn where emotions and thoughts come from; how the body reacts to stress and threats; and how life choices of nutrition, exercise, and sleep can profoundly impact their functioning.” (RH)I know that your approach[iv] is centered around developing an environment focused on success. Can you explain how you have used the Bloom Sanctuary Model and Sanchez Resiliency Model to impact your school culture and climate? We know that what we can measure improves and there’s such an emphasis on measurable outcomes these days, how does what you cannot measure translate into measurable outcomes for you? What are some of the Behavioral and Clinical Supports that you use for students? What do you have in place to help educators handle the stress that comes along with the job?For some first steps to implement these strategies in a school or district, I know that having all staff on the same page is important to begin an implementation. “Do your work and research the leaders in the field. I recommend Dr. Lori Desautels [v] and Horatio Sanchez[vi] to begin with. Also Greg Benner [vii]Is there anything else that I have missed that you think would be important for a District or School to know to implement neuroeducation as a strategy for improving student behavior and achievement?[i] https://www.valleyday.org[ii] https://www.educationdive.com/news/lessons-in-leadership-how-an-alternative-school-improved-behavioral-outcom/556977/[iii] https://www.effectiveteaching.com/store/products/books/new-the-first-days-of-school-5th-edition[iv] https://www.valleyday.org/domain/20[v] http://revelationineducation.com/[vi] https://www.learningandthebrain.com/education-speakers/Horacio-Sanchez[vii] Gregg Benner @GJBenner on Twitter

Part of the delay is technological. We still need to set up and configure recording software for Skype so we can record remotely. We hope to have this ready to go in a few weeks. Benzo News Here are some news items that we wanted to share: Patient Surveys – Benzodiazepine Information Coalition (BIC)BIC is currently supporting two completely separate surveys on patients' experiences with benzos. Please check them out if you wish to participate.Survey w/ USC Annenberg (on BIC Blog) Survey w/ Salem State University (on BIC Blog)Increase in Benzodiazepine Prescriptions – JAMA NetworkSeveral articles have been written lately about the increase in benzodiazepine prescriptions in outpatient facilities. One article, on the JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) Network's webpage, was titled. “Patterns in Outpatient Benzodiazepine Prescribing in the United States.” It stated that the rate of visits which included a prescription for a benzodiazepine in outpatient visits increased from 3.8% to 7.4% for the years 2003 through 2015. The largest increase was not from psychiatrists' offices, but from others including primary care. In addition, benzodiazepines are being prescribed more frequently now for pain, especially chronic pain and back pain. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2722576 Benzo Stories Even though we are receiving comments from the listeners, we are still light on personal stories and anecdotes. Today I shared a short observation of my experiences with some protracted symptoms during a charity poker game I attended the night before. Even though symptoms still plague me from time-to-time, I try and remind myself that I am so much better now than I was during the acute phase of my withdrawal. Feature Today's featured topic: Dependence, Disbelief, and the Doctor Dilemma Today's topic was triggered by a comment from a listener about the difficulties that so many face when trying to find a doctor who can help them with their dependence and withdrawal. Here are a few excerpts from her comment: I work as an admin in a group on Facebook helping others as best I can, within my limited abilities and mostly from experience, reading resources and audio resources as well as observations gleaned over a long period of years. I recognize the need for a disclaimer to protect oneself but I am caught in a dilemma when it comes to saying work with your trusted physician as those are few and far between if for many they even can be found. [Speaking about doctors] Most are sadly ignorant and only learning of the withdrawal but still harbor doubt. Those who are aware and accept the problem aren't aware of safe tapering methods. I started tapering in 2011 along with some other prescription drugs and its been a minefield of narrowly and luckily avoiding a detox or too fast taper dangers. I'm now 63 and loving life post benzo withdrawal but had I listened to doctors and worked with them I can't begin to guess where I'd be in life. I question, in fact, whether I'd still be alive. — Kathryn I understand Kathryn's frustrations and empathize. 90% of all prescriptions for benzos come from primary care physicians, and this was also true in my case. I visited five different primary care providers during my withdrawal, and only one of them was well educated on benzos in my opinion. I completely sympathize with people like Kathryn. It's hard enough when you have a doctor who will work with you, I can't imagine what it's like without one. This is problem which is gaining some attention from medical associations: There is a pattern in patients' notes where doctors don't believe that their withdrawal symptoms, such as pain, fits and psychiatric disorders such as panic and obsessiveness, are associated with the drugs… All too often doctors fail to take note of the fact they have been on benzodiazepines for years. — Marion Brown, a psychotherapist working with the British Medial Association, from an article in The Daily Mail by John Naish titled “Betrayed by the Doctors Who Turned Us into DRUG ADDICTS: How a Nation of Patients Became Hooked on Prescription Pills,” published on May 22, 2017. The truth is, I've spent a lot of time on some of the discussion boards, and I've heard the horror stories. And they can be terrible. Disbelief, denial, rapid detox… the problems seem endless. I wish that all doctors were properly educated on benzos and how to properly withdrawal, but sadly that is not always the case. So, thanks to Kathryn for her input, and I hope I have done it justice. I am limited in what I can say and share on this podcast — legally. As I've mentioned, I am not a medical professional, and this podcast is not medical advice and should never be substituted for it. Yes, it is true that I cannot advise anyone to disregard medical advice or delay in seeking it. That being said, I would like to also say it is not just a legality here. I actually believe what I say in my disclaimer. Still, I realize that there are two sides to this issue and Kathryn has done an excellent job of raising some very valid concerns. All I can do is share my experience, some experiences I've heard from others, and tell you what I think. That's it. Yes, I am limited do a degree in what I can say here, but despite my difficulties finding medial support during my taper, I am very glad that I didn't give up trying. It wasn't easy. Not by a long shot. But it was worth it. You see, I truly believe that most doctors want to help their patients. That's how I feel about it. Perhaps I don't live in the real world, but that is my belief. The truth is, there are some amazing doctors out there who are our biggest champions. Prof. Ashton, Prof. Lader, and Dr. Christy Huff (BIC) are just a few examples. If you can't find a doctor, there are some resources which can help you. Many of them. The Benzodiazepine Information Coalition (BIC) has an article on their site titled: “How to Find a Doctor: 10 Tips to Quit Benzos.” They also have a list of benzo-wise or benzo-aware doctors throughout the U.S. W-BAD also has a full page of information on support for your taper, which also includes a list of doctors. And other sites have similar support. Links can be found in our resources section at the top of the show notes. Here are my thoughts on benzos and doctors. Take it or leave it, it's just my opinion. I believe withdrawal from benzos is a complicated, medical procedure and should not be done without the supervision of a licensed physician. Yes, I'm supposed to say that, but I also believe it. Benzo withdrawal can be a medical nightmare for some people, and to have a doctor to work with us, who is sympathetic to our needs, is crucial. Not only did I need someone to prescribe tapered dosages, but even more so, I needed a doctor who knew what I was going through and could help me diagnose all of my symptoms. Especially those 5 EKGs that I've had. This is what I would do if I had to do it all over again. I'm not advising anyone on anything, but these are my thoughts: First, I would educate myself on benzos. • I would read the Ashton Manual, probably twice. • I would go online and read articles and board postings.• I would use my common sense to determine what is true.• And I would develop a plan of how I want to taper if that is what I decided to do.Second, I would speak with my current doctor or psychiatrist.• I would see if I can work with him or her.• We already have a working relationship, so better to start here.Third, if that doesn't work, I would seek out a benzo-wise doctor.• I would check out the benzo-wise doctor lists I just spoke about.• I would ask people on the boards if anyone knows a benzo-wise doctor in my area.Fourth, if that doesn't work, I would find one I could work with.• Perhaps this person isn't well educated on benzos, but if he or she is willing to listen, they may just be the doctor for me. I believe that to solve this problem, we need to work with doctors and not against them. That may sound naïve to some, but it's my opinion. But that, in no way, means that I don't recognize the nightmare that some of you have experienced trying to find medical support when you so desperately need it. It should be easier, and doctors should be better educated. I hope this topic has been helpful. Thanks for listening.

Hey everyone and welcome back to ATA's very own Longbow Hunters: The Arrow Podcast! After a week hiatus, Woo and myself could not wait to get right back into talking about Arrow, and to help us on this episode is a very special guest and a friend to the podcast, Alisa Lea Gossage!
