Her oil paintings address the tension of urban landscape and the natural world. Inspired by frequent walks through various trails and open spaces in California, her work reveals her observations of the changes and dynamics of nature in the face of the ongoing climate crisis. Engaging notions of abstraction, her work references the surrounding landscape using atmospheric color shifts, fragmented imagery and multiple viewpoints to suggest the ideas of flux, change and instability in the environment. Marie taught painting and color theory at CSULB for 30 years, where she developed an Advanced Studies in Color class.June is a recipient of the COLA Fellowship, the Guggenheim and the California Community Foundation, Fellowship for Visual Artists. June uses abstract painting to explore how color, repetition, movement, and balance can serve as conduits to spiritual contemplation and interpersonal connection to her African-American roots. Exploring the psychological construct of skin color or tone through pattern and abstract painting has proven to be a revealing gesture and these ideas are explored in her two ongoing series: the Energy Wheel Paintings inspired by her meditation practice and her Flag Paintings, which explore the alignment of multiple identities such as race, nationality, gender, or political leanings. June's public art works include a Venetian glass mosaic at the Metro Pacific Station in Long Beach Influences: Marie has two main influences: first, the New York abstract school where her formalist abstract artist teachers were students of the pivotal figure in Abstract Expressionism, Hans Hoffman. That experience that has always remained with her. Second, were her teachers Elmer Bishoff and Joan Brown at Berkeley, members of the "second generation" of the Bay Area Figurative Movement. Marie always loved the California painting of Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud and the landscape expanse.June's influences include Varnette Honeywood, Romare Beardon, Jacob Lawrence, Charles White, David Hockney and Alma Thomas. Another influence was the 1976 LACMA show ‘Two Centuries of Black American Art.' These works had a profound, formative impact upon June. Other inspiration/explorations have drawn from cultural and African American historical references, sacred geometry and very recently, the Benin emblem of the river leaf.Find more information at: www.mariethibeault.com and www.luisdejesus.com/artists/june-edm

A very busy weekend at Michigan State started with Stephen F. Austin defensive tackle transfer Brandon Lane to soften the blow of Derrick Harmon and Simeon Barrow's departure. Will he be a day one starter, and why are so many power five teams after him? Also, Antonio Gates Jr. comes back out of the portal to keep the receiver room full of young talent. Charles White also gave MSU football recruiting another win as the 3-star linebacker picked a very familiar Joe Rossi system for his college stop. “Recalibrating the Pennsylvania pre-sidedress soil nitrate test recommendations for modern corn production” with Charles White. Nitrogen management is one of the most important agronomic practices in modern crop production systems. The Pre-Sidedress Soil Nitrate Test, also known as the PSNT, gives farmers an estimation of plant available nitrogen in the soil, allowing them to calculate how much nitrogen the plants still need. The existing PSNT method was developed during the 1990's. Now, farming practices are improved, altering the amount of nitrogen fertilizer plants need. Thus, it is important to re-calibrate the test so farmers can have a more accurate estimation of nitrogen requirements and reduce the cost of production. In this episode, Dr. Charlie White shares his insights on re-calibrating the pre-side dress soil nitrate test for modern corn production systems. Tune in to learn more about: · What the Pre-Sidedress Soil Nitrate Test does · The importance of Nitrogen mineralization · Which improved practices have impacted the test's accuracy · Which factors most impact the test results now If you would like more information about this topic, this episode's paper is available here: https://doi.org/10.1002/agj2.21426 This paper is always freely available. Charles White was a student at Cleveland Elementary College in Stockton in 1989 when the school came under attack by a man with a gun, killing 5 students and wounding over 30 more. The story is mentioned on page 39 of my book “Humanitarian – The Real Michael Jackson.” 3 weeks after the shooting, Michael Jackson visited the school to support the students and teachers and to inspire the kids to go back to school. Charles was also there on the day Michael visited and, in this episode, he tells us all about it. The Postman is here! We got the esteemed collector Kerry Davis joining the Studio Noize fam. Kerry built his legendary collection while working 30 years as a postman at USPS. How impressive is his collection? Well, it's in the middle of a 5-year national museum tour, and he could have a whole other show from work currently up in his home. The collection includes the biggest names in Black art, from Charles White to Radcliff Bailey, Mo Brooker to Louis Delsarte. The collection alone is enough to discuss, but we go deeper than that. Kerry tells us about the relationships with those names on the wall. Mildred Thomas was his real friend; those personal stories are so great to hear. We talk about how he started touring his collection, got so much incredible work, and all the artists he met and got to know on his journey. Another great episode with that good art talk for you. If you're a regular listener of the Not Real Art Podcast, you'll likely agree that art has the ability to educate, entertain, provoke thought, and illicit a wide range of emotions. Today's guest believes that, as long as you can make a viewer feel something, you're on the right path! Joining us is Michael Massenburg, an African American teaching artist and community organizer. Born in San Diego, raised in South Central Los Angeles, and based in Inglewood, Micheal says that he began his career at the Watts Towers Arts Center in Los Angeles, influenced by the Watts Rebellion, the Black Art Movement of the 1960s, and the 1992 Los Angeles Uprising. His socially-informed practice speaks to historical, cultural, and personal narratives and incorporates a diverse range of materials, combining painting, collage, photography, and assemblage to explore the African diaspora experience in the Americas. Michael is also what you would call an “artivist” (or an art activist), devoting much of his time to art education, lectures, and community organizing. In today's episode, Michael shares how travel helped shape his perspective, why he believes that he was called to be an artist, and why labels like “Black art” are important. We also discuss how his former arts organization, The Collective, carried the torch for Black artists, and why Michael believes that artists and educators can be a voice for those who have had their own voices suppressed. Typical Friday the 13th show where my sleeve touched the trackpad & stopped the show right near the end when I was talking about Hammerin' Hank. CFB moves including Bama's DC moving to Ole Miss. So is UGA's Co-DC going to the Tide? Or Jeremy Pruitt to return? Max Duggan is really Pirate Steve, PETA calls for UGA to get rid of UGA, NFL playoffs missing big name QBs, LSU star gymnast too popular for her own good, Braves sign Minter & others, Soto signs, Robot umps around the corner, Michael Kay nuts up again, Robbie Knievel dies, Pete's Tweets, This Day in Sports History. I am all for positive #bodyimage & #exercise but #nude and #pickleball don't ever go together. #skylarthompson leading the @miamidolphins into Buffalo has to have the @buffalobills & #billsmafia foaming at the mouth. @49ers going for 3 straight vs @seahawks #wildcardweekend Saturday. #probowlgames2023 definitely going to be interesting. @texasmbb & @partylikearochkind you want #johncalipari as your next head coach? Looks like this could be his last year @kentuckymbb @btmcgraw you concur? #jalenbrunson on fire for @nyknicks in 2023. @brooklynnets no #kd tonight as they host @celtics first #nba team to 30 wins. Congrats #frankiemuniz huge #malcolminthemiddle fan. He's going to be #carracing @arcamenards series starting February 18th @daytona can't wait.
Back on my mid-week podcast grind as I bring the pain on all that's going on throughout the sports landscape. On deck: (2:35) NFL fans rejoice as Wild Card Weekend is upon us. I'll delve into every nook and cranny with what will take place as the playoffs get underway. I'll have all of the top storylines (i.e. rematches from the regular season, Brock Purdy, Dak Prescott/Cowboys, and much more) heading into this round, predictions as to who'll move onto the Divisional Round and why we may have to wait until Monday night to have an exciting game to watch from start to finish? I'll also get into the two coaches who were fired this week. Texans Lovie Smith and Cardinals Kliff Kingsbury have been shown the door. What can we possibly expect from both franchises as they head into the offseason with plenty on their collective plates? (33:32) The Georgia Bulldogs showed why they're the best team in college football, drubbing TCU 65-7 in the National Championship Game. Sadly, former USC tailback & Heisman Trophy winner, Charles White, passed away at the age of 78. (38:49) Kevin Durant will be on the shelf for a month when he suffered a knee injury in Miami on Sunday. How will the Nets fare without their MVP candidate? Donovan Mitchell made his first trip as a visitor to Utah, dropping 46 points in a loss. How was the reception from the home crowd upon his return? Speaking of which, Steph Curry is back in the lineup after a long absence due to a shoulder injury. Are the Warriors primed to make a run in the West? How about the Heat's perfection at the free throw line (40-40) vs. OKC as they eked out a win vs. the Thunder. I'll get a handle on all that's happening in the Association, especially some separation out West with the top eight seeds in the conference for the first time all year. (45:28) The NHL is a week and change away from their All-Star Break. Not a lot to report as we're at the halfway point of the season. (48:15) The Carlos Correa Soap Opera has FINALLY concluded. He re-signs with the Twins as we can put this saga to bed. Was this a good deal, considering he had THREE OTHER OFFERS on the table, but settled for this one? And where do the Mets go to try to add and put them over the top? What in the world is going on with Red Sox INF Trevor Story? He'll need Tommy John surgery to repair his UCL in his throwing arm. Why did he wait too long to have this procedure now that he'll be out to the All-Star Break? Judithe Hernández first won acclaim as a member of the celebrated Chicano artist collective Los Four. The collective would become a major force in the Chicano Art Movement and the first Chicano artists to break through the mainstream museum barrier. After graduating from Otis Art Institute in 1974, she and Carlos Almaraz earned recognition as muralists during the renowned Los Angeles mural renaissance of the 1970's. Together they painted murals for labor rights leader Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers Union, as well as community murals, such as the Ramona Gardens Housing Projects in East Los Angeles where they painted a pair of the first feminist empowerment murals. While in graduate school, her mentor was the legendary African American artist, Charles White. His influence and encouragement to pursue her interest in social realism art was critical to her later work. Like White, she shared a love of drawing which resulted in a studio practice dedicated to works on paper. Following graduation from Otis, her inclusion in museum and gallery exhibitions in California began immediately with landmark exhibitions at the Oakland Museum, "In Search of Aztlan" and "The Aesthetics of Graffiti" at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.MORE AT: JuditheHernandez.com

In this episode, Eric sits down with Los Angeles based Postwar & Contemporary sculptor Charles Dickson. They discuss his first exposure to art, how he was specifically drawn to carving at a very young age to, eventually become a child prodigy.. his educational path, involvement in various organizations and the great artists who inspired and mentored him including the legendary Charles White, William Pajaud, John Ottobridge and Noah Purifoy; how they inspired him, informed his work and helped him overcome challenges that he faced along the way. They discuss his artistic journey including his unique process and innovative approach to making art; the numerous mediums he has worked with, his fascination with technology and the chemical make-up of materials. The various “phases” he has gone through and concepts he has dealt with throughout his career that fuel his creative and inventive process. The camaraderie he shares with fellow artists and his desire to empower through teaching; exchange of knowledge, technique and experience with others! For more visit: www.ericsperspective.comGuest Bio: Postwar & Contemporary sculptor Charles Dickson is an African American Los Angeles native who sculpts in a variety of media including wood, stone, and bronze and is known for incorporating a potpourri of objects and media into his prolific creation of art. He grew up in Watts and had the good fortune to attend an excellent High School with an extremely advanced wood shop/applied arts department. He was given a scholarship to study at Otis Art Institute with Charles White over the summer. Largely self-taught, Dickson is inspired by classical art and the ancient cultures of Africa and Mexico. A master wood carver, Dickson's work is ancestrally driven. The artist incorporates his unique life experiences and surrounding urban environment to create pieces that express different perspectives of the African American experience. Charles Dickson seeks to create a language that conveys what he terms, “the black American aesthetic”. Dickson's work with Black Nudes was also the precursor for a much larger artistic dialogue on the politics of beauty and how the consequences of slavery reverberated in contemporary society that has extended throughout his entire career. For the last fifty years, Charles Dickson has practiced the art of sculpting and has participated in one hundred Professional Exhibitions, including numerous key galleries and museums such as California African American Museum having featured Charles Dickson's work. He has participated in numerous Television Shows and has been written about in various art Magazines, newspaper articles. Charles Dickson has been awarded several public commissions throughout Southern California and works with the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust and Offices of The Trust for Public Land LA River Center to create sculptures within the community… and has received numerous Honors and Awards throughout his celebrated career. Today Dickson is an Artist in Residence at Watts Towers Art Center and the Grounds Keeper for LACMA and the Watts Towers Monument. Dickson continues to sculpt in his Compton studio where he has created a peaceful environment that is open to the public. In this episode we interview Dr. Mary Helen Washington. Mary Helen Washington is an accomplished African-American literary scholar and the editor and author of many books including Midnight Birds and Black-eyed Susans: Stories by and about Black Women, Invented Lives: Narratives of Black Women 1860-1960, Memories of Kin, and the book we focus on in this discussion on The Other Blacklist: The African-American Literary and Cultural Left of the 1950s. Mary Helen Washington is also a Distinguished Professor in the English Department at the University of Maryland, College Park. She previously served as the president of the American Studies Association. Washington worked for many years developing Black Studies programs, including in Detroit where she has stated she was “part of the ground troops helping in the activities of the Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement (DRUM), an”I offshoot of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers.” In this conversation we specifically focus on the work of Gwendolyn Brooks prior to her joining the Black Arts Movement in the late 1960's, within the Black cultural and literary left that Washington analyzes in The Other Blacklist. Mary Helen Washington situates Brooks within this Black cultural milieu as a member of the South Side Community Art Center in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood and as someone who was connected and had relationships to Black communists, and other communists and progressives as well as to cultural institutions and magazines of the Popular Front. Washington highlights Brooks' attentiveness to working class concerns and critiques of racism both interpersonally and institutionally in her writing as far back as the 1940's. She also highlights Brooks' work in dialogue with critiques reflected by other communist and progressive Black women of her era, including Claudia Jones, Lorraine Hansberry and Alice Childress. In doing so, Washington argues that Brooks' work offers early blueprints for Black Left Feminism operating within her poetry, essays and her novel Maud Martha. The discussion is also firmly attentive to the racial politics and the anticommunism of the 1950's, in which racially radical or progressive analyses were automatically cause for suspicion, surveillance, and potentially repression. Additionally, Mary Helen Washington talks about other important figures from her book The Other Blacklist including other communist and leftwing Black figures of the 1950's including visual artist Charles White, and authors Lloyd Brown, Alice Childress, and Frank London Brown.
