“Something's been worrying me. You're a French police officer and yet you've got a Scottish accent.” -“Aye. It worries me too.” Before Daniel Craig was even a twinkle in his father's eye (give it a couple of months) there was the 1967 original big screen version of Casino Royale, a far-from-subtle James Bond spoof based extremely loosely on Ian Fleming's first novel, which would go on to become the bedrock for all subsequent Austin Powers movies! How to best describe Casino Royale? Baffling, bloated, self-indulgent, messy - yes, all these apply. However, it's a fascinating celluloid confection and there are plenty of interesting aspects to the film, plus a handful of chuckles along the way. Famously suffering from temperamental stars (step forward Mr Sellers) and multiple directors, and shot through with the psychedelic sentiment of the time, Casino Royale is worth watching for the cast alone: along with the aforementioned Peter Sellers we have Orson Welles, David Niven, Woody Allen, Deborah Kerr, Ursula Andress, John Huston, Bernard Cribbens, Ronnie Corbett, Anna Quayle, John Bluthal, John Wells, Geoffrey Bayldon, Peter O'Toole and even Derek Nimmo! This week Tyler is joined by Martin Holmes, the host of Vision On Sound - https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/visiononsound - to try and make sense of it all!

First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on February 19th 2023 This week we welcome back PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI himself, from THE SHY LIFE PODCAST and we're going to talk about, in a magic roundabout sort of a way, our various memories of, or reactions to, the children's television that we used to watch when we were growing up. This idea was mostly prompted by two things really; First there was the range of single episodes dating from what many people consider to be a “Golden Age” of children's television that were put out on BBC4 last year as part of the BBC's Centenary celebrations, which gave modern viewers a rare chance to see the likes of THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT, VISION ON, and RENTAGHOST on their televisions for the first time in what seems like an absolute age. Not that our conversation is exclusively restricted to the BBC's output however, because the other prompt for us to have this conversation was the imminent release of the rediscovered masters of Southern Television's classic series WORZEL GUMMIDGE which featured JON PERTWEE, UNA STUBBS and GEOFFREY BAYLDON, which has now been lovingly remastered for a brand new high-definition Blu-Ray set. So, over the course of this hour we mention that, alongside shows like BLUE PETER and the various SATURDAY MORNING options that we were given to view back in the day, and talk about the sort of television that most appealed to us when we were both knee-high to various grasshoppers and hadn't yet graduated to full control rights for the household remote control box. It's a bit of an amiable ramble down memory lane, really, so don't expect any massive insights, or production details, or anything like that, but I do hope you enjoy travelling along those pathways with us. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

On this episode of The James Bond A-Z Podcast hosts Tom Butler and Brendan Duffy are joined by journalist Mark Harrison to do a deep dive into Q, the MI6 Quartermaster who has appeared in 22 out of the 25 Eon Bond films, as well as 1967's Casino Royale and 1983's Never Say Never Again. The episode takes a look at the history and origins of Q in the Ian Fleming novels, discussing his likely inspirations and early appearance in Dr No. We also take a look at the rich life and career of Desmond Llewelyn, the actor with the most appearances in the entire film series from 1963's From Russia With Love to 1999's The World Is Not Enough. We dig into the other incarnations of Q from Geoffrey Bayldon in Casino Royale to Alec McCowen in Never Say Never Again, and Ben Whishaw's modern take on the character. We're saving John Cleese's R for a later episode. It wouldn't be an episode on Q without discussing his many gadgets too, and we've also squeezed in a little quiz at the end for those that want to take part. If you want to take part in our 60th anniversary special, record a clip of yourself talking about your favourite, under-appreciated Bond movie moment and email the audio file (under 2 minutes please) to podcast@jamesbondatoz.co.uk. Joining Tyler this week is Jon Auty from Behind the Stunts to talk about a 1971 British comedy film featuring some of the biggest names in comedy and light entertainment at the time. The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins was conceived, directed and produced by Graham Stark and he managed to bring together the likes of Bruce Forsyth, Harry H Corbett, Leslie Phillips, Alfie Bass, June Whitfield, Ronnie Barker and others to appear in a series of interlinked sketches illustrating the titular sins. Notably, it also featured two Goons - Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe - the former writing and appearing in a standout sequence called 'Sloth' while his erstwhile colleague adopts a series of desperate disguises to hoodwink Geoffrey Bayldon in 'Envy'. Things discussed include: On The Buses, recasting with Terry Scott, Paul Hardcastle's The Wizard, walnuts, Keith Flint from The Prodigy, 'Boob Coverage', Bert Kwouk's stunt double, the extremely talented Madeline Smith, the mystery of DB Cooper and much much more!
