Mother's Day is right around the corner, so that's what I'd like to discuss on the podcast this week. Even if giving birth to you is all your mother ever did, she would still be worthy of your gratitude and respect. But for most of our moms, the end of labor and delivery was when the real work began. Show Notes: VERSES CITED: Ephesians 6:2-3 - "Honor your father and your mother --which is the first commandment with a promise--that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on the earth.” Proverbs 31:28-29 - “Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also praises her saying, ‘Many daughters have done nobly, But you excel them all.'” Leviticus 19:3 - “Each of you must respect his mother and father, and you must keep My Sabbaths. I am the LORD your God.” Proverbs 23:22 - “Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.” Matthew 15:4 - “For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother' and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.'” 1 Corinthians 12:17- 18 - “If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? [Or] If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact, God has arranged the members of the body, every one of them, according to His design.” RELATED LINKS: EP 2: Dealing with Difficult In-Laws - the wonderful relationship we enjoy today makes me glad I didn't give up BBC Documentary with Miriam Margolyes - scroll halfway down this post to view our 12-minute segment A Christian Home - the hymn I sang at the end of this episode STAY CONNECTED: - Subscribe: Flanders Family Freebies - (weekly themed link lists of free resources) - Instagram: follow @flanders_family for more great content - Shop my books: Flanders Family Store - Family Blog: Flanders Family Home Life (parenting tips, homeschool help, free printables) - Marriage Blog: Loving Life at Home (encouragement in your roles as wife, mother, believer)

Episode 167 is a little different: we're sharing an excerpt from my chat on the Cinora YouTube channel with filmmaker – and returning pal – Ashley Dick. We dive into the shock cancellation of BBC Scotland's flagship soap River City and what the decision signals for drama production across Scotland and the wider UK.Since the recording, the fight to save the show has exploded. Famous faces – Richard E. Grant, Ewan McGregor, Miriam Margolyes and Nicola Sturgeon among them – have lent their voices, and a motion to keep River City on air will soon be heard in the Scottish Parliament. In this chat we talk about:How River City was axed and why it matters – timelines, budget pressures and the creative fallout. The concern for the wider TV industry – what the cancellation tells us about an already‑strained sector. Why we need to future‑proof the soap format (or find a new kind of long‑running drama). Why local voices are important – the cultural impact of losing a home‑grown show. What potential solutions we can pursue as an industry – ideas, funding routes and collective action.Hit play, share your thoughts, and help keep Scotland's storytelling future alive. For over 50 years it was a staple for Kiwi kids - be it in book, radio play or theatre form: Spike Milligan's Bad Jelly the Witch. Originally a short handwritten story for his kids, it was printed in 1973 and made into an audio version. It was phenomenally popular here - in fact it was the most-licensed New Zealand play and believed to have over one hundred productions throughout the country. But it's set to get a new generation of young fans thanks to Mukpuddy animation studio who have picked up the rights and have turned it into a 13-part series with British star Miriam Margolyes as Bad Jelly. Ryan Cooper is one of the co-founders of Mukpuddy, he's the co-director of the new series (streaming now on TVNZ+) and also the author of a new book, Badjelly, that's just been released. He joins Kathryn to talk about how the book and series came about and the perennial popularity of this deliciously pernicious witch.
By her own admission, BAFTA award winning actress Miriam Margolyes didn't know anything about New Zealand before coming over on a road-trip.
Miriam Margoyles in New Zealand In preparation for her first New Zealand film role, the irrepressible Miriam Margolyes embarks on a road trip around our beautiful country (Sky Open on Sunday 9 Feb at 7.30pm, also streaming on Neon). Apple Cider Vinegar Two young women advocate for wellness remedies to cure deadly illnesses, unraveling their lives as they unknowingly - and knowingly - mislead the world (Netflix). Grace Written by the critically-acclaimed screenwriter Russell Lewis, this adaptation of the bestseller by Peter James stars John Simm and follows the Brighton-based Detective Roy Grace, who has hit rock bottom in his life. His wife Sandy disappeared six years ago, and Roy spends all his time investigating cold cases. Meanwhile, his different ways of working are being questioned by his bosses, risking his job. However, things look set to change when his colleague Detective Glenn Branson asks for his help on a difficult case (Neon). LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Famed British-Australian actress Miriam Margolyes has been spending the last few months in New Zealand to prepare for her latest film role - but she took the time to explore the nation as well. To learn more about the Kiwi way of life, she embarked on a road trip across New Zealand's North and South Islands, with a camera crew following her along the way. Miriam Margolyes in New Zealand is set to be available for Kiwi fans on Neon and Sky Open this week - but she felt the need to talk about the highlights from the trip ahead of February 9. "If I'd come to New Zealand first, I would have definitely settled here - definitely. I've gone off Australia, and that's the truth." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's suppertime! Yes, after our review of 2024 Pop Screen is back to its old tricks with a look back at 1986's Little Shop of Horrors, the horror-comedy-musical powered by an unforgettable voice performance from none other than The Four Tops's Levi Stubbs. As the "mean green. mother from outer space" Audrey II, Stubbs made Academy Awards history - but you'll have to listen to find out how... Join Graham and Mike in their weird world as they discuss the songs and set-pieces both added to and taken from the stage musical, as well as the film's relationship with the Roger Corman film it's inspired by. We also unearth Little Shop of Horrors's unexpected connection to Kurt Vonnegut, its successfully unreal soundstage aesthetic, its cameos for everyone from John Candy to Miriam Margolyes... and THAT original ending. Like it or not, there's no escaping Charles Dickens at this time of year. But who was the man behind classics such as A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist and of course, A Christmas Carol? His life is as rich as many of the characters' stories in one of his books, including a brutal Victorian upbringing and rumours of sex and scandal.Joining us in this re-run to explore the controversy of the man is Charles Dickens super-fan Miriam Margolyes - a national treasure in her own right.Having written and starred in the play, Dickens Women, Miriam knows better than most the complicated relationships he had in his life: from his mother who took him out of school to work in a rat-infested blacking factory aged 12, to his wife whom he had a bookcase wall built to separate her from him. This episode was edited and produced by Stuart Beckwith. Ian McMillan is joined by poets and poetry lovers for this celebration of language recorded at this year's Hay Festival. The actor, Harry Potter star, Dickens virtuoso and national treasure Miriam Margolyes shares one of her favourite poems, the 19th century poet Robert Browning's 'My Last Duchess'. Miriam invites listeners to imagine the Duke, who is the speaker in the poem, as being like 'Hannibal Lecter' from 'The Silence of the Lambs' - a good planner, who has killed his wife.Irish novelist Kevin Barry has written three novels and four collections of short stories - a master of dialogue, and a beloved voice in the New Yorker magazine. He explores the poetry of the language in his most recent novel 'A Heart in Winter'.Gwenno has won awards and acclaim for her haunting and groundbreaking song-writing and performances. Gwenno's albums Le Kov and Tresor are in Cornish (she has a Welsh mother and a Cornish father). She joins Ian to share her love of the Welsh artist and poet Edrica Huws, who achieved fame late in life as a visual artist. Her poem 'Vingt-et-un' has stayed with Gwenno, and she explains why Edrica is a creative inspiration. The poet Owen Sheers explores a poem with a stand-out line (what we call on The Verb the 'Neon Line'). This week the poem explored is 'The Lake Isle of Innisfree' by the Irish poet W.B. Yeats. Is it the 'bee-loud glade' that has caught Owen's attention, or something else? Ian finds out. Owen has an acute ear for language, with writing often inspired by his interviews with real people, for books like 'The Green Hollow'.

This week Chapter by Chapter returns as Harry faces off against the CLEARLY most-dangerous dragon. Join Andrew, Eric, Laura and Micah and special Slug Club guest Catherine as they tackle Chapter 20 of Goblet of Fire, “The First Task.” Welcome to the show, Slug Club guest Catherine, who is a college professor of psychology! In the news: Helena Bonham Carter was asked about Miriam Margolyes' recent, controversial remarks about adult Harry Potter fans! We discuss Helena's response. Chapter-by-Chapter continues with Goblet of Fire, Chapter 20: The First Task 7-Word Summary: Dragons are afoot inside Hogwarts' grounds AHHHHHHH Harry “does the right thing” with Cedric. What does this tell us about his character? Mad-Eye Fakey's dark detectors are going off, but not for the reason he says! Professor McGonagall is a mother figure to Harry, and we get an inkling of it in this chapter. Should the Triwizard Tournament feature four of the same dragon? Why does Ludo Bagman keep asking Harry to cheat? Harry and Ron are friends again, and we discuss what was missing in Harry's life while he was gone. Who do we think had the best solution for the First Task? Karkaroff gives Harry a FOUR. Isn't there a rubric or a better way to prevent against this absurd favoritism?! Odds and Ends touch on Poor Poppy Pomfrey, pointed caps, Trelawney nonsense, and a cool connection between books 1, 4 and 7. Quizzitch question: What is the pattern of Dobby's tie when Harry first encounters him in the Hogwarts kitchens? In this episode of our podcast, we dive into the swirling rumors that Aaron Taylor-Johnson is being formally offered the iconic role of James Bond. We'll dissect what this means for the franchise and the actor's career. Then, we switch gears to a chilling discussion on "Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble," a low-budget horror crossover film that twists beloved children's characters like Winnie the Pooh, Bambi, Tinkerbell, Pinocchio, and Peter Pan into nightmarish figures. We also explore a recent HarrisX poll revealing a major shift in movie-watching preferences, with two-thirds of U.S. adults now preferring streaming platforms over traditional theater experiences. This shift highlights the growing dominance of streaming services in our daily entertainment choices. Adding a touch of magic and controversy, we delve into "Harry Potter" actress Miriam Margolyes's candid concerns about the obsession adults still have with the magical series, as expressed in a recent YouTube interview. Wrapping up, we'll give you a sneak peek at the first teaser trailer for "The Acolyte," the eagerly anticipated Star Wars original series set to premiere on Disney+ on June 4. This teaser promises to unveil a mysterious and dark storyline that has fans buzzing with anticipation. Did Dumbledoree see the name of the school Harry Potter was entered under for the Triwizard Tournament? If so, what was it? Are you an adult but obsessed with things that you should've left in childhood? For example, Disney, Harry Potter, Twilight? Harry Potter actress Miriam Margolyes says fans of the franchise should ‘be over that by now' as ‘it was 25 years ago and is for children.' Frankly we think the magic should stay alive even though we're old... Is that sad? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Welcome to our podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. We may not be fans of the person, we may never have heard of the person and we never know who we are going to find next...There are only 2 rules to this podcast. The book has to be found in a thrift shop and we are not allowed to talk about the book until we press record, which is sometimes agonising. We have lots of episodes coming up so if you find yourself enjoying our podcast, please be sure to subscribe to be among the first to hear about each episode.Support the show
