It is June 1970. Ted Heath is days away from becoming British Prime Minister. Mungo Jerry are riding high at the top of the charts. And popular television personality Simon Dee's career is just about to collapse in a spectacular fashion. How ironic then that Dee should co-star in the film we're discussing this week, playing a popular television personality! Doctor In Trouble was the last of the Doctor film series, which by 1970 had fully committed to aping the Carry Ons. As well as Dee, Harry Secombe is one of the principle cast, and the star is Leslie Phillips playing Dr Tony Burke, who somehow manages to stow away on a luxury cruise liner and spends much of the voyage trying to evade the clutches of Master-At Arms-Freddie Jones! Oh, and Robert Morley's in it too. Secombe is brilliant, as you would expect, and Dee (although not given a huge amount to do) puts in a fairly creditable performance. Leslie Phillips is, well, Leslie Phillips and how did we forget to mention that the peerless Irene Handl pops up too? Joining Tyler this week is writer, director and actor John Hewer. John has been behind some tributes to and revivals of classic British comedy performers and shows, including The Bed Sitting Room, Tommy Cooper and Steptoe & Son. They talk about the history of the Doctor series, the sad decline of James Robertson-Justice, the rise and fall of Simon Dee, problematic gay stereotypes from around this period, seventies posh nosh and consider the prospect of a nude Welshman on the film set! You'll really dig it!

Chris Diamond returns with the second part of our chat about 1957's The Smallest Show On Earth. We talk much more about the actual film and highlight several delightful moments, such as the scene in which the three elderly staff watch an old silent movie while the kinema is closed, and projectionist Percy Quill's evident elation following a (nearly) faultless film showing. We also ask the question: should sympathetic characters get away with committing arson? Off on a tangent, Arthur Lowe's wife comes in for a drubbing (which I'm sure nobody expected) and even podcast favourite Hylda Baker crops up in conversation. It's all good fun and there's even a knotty connection question posed for listeners to answer. The Smallest Show on Earth stars Bill Travers, Virginia McKenna, Peter Sellers, Margaret Rutherford, Bernard Miles, Leslie Phillips, Francis De Wolff and Sid James.
Sam Phillips was born to a family that loved doling out nicknames. She was called “Sam” growing up in a house that was filled with readers. She nurtured her love of philosophy and spirituality by exploring different religions and devouring works by authors like C.S. Lewis and Thomas Merton. Early in her career, she found success as a Christian musician under her real name: Leslie Phillips. She made several albums, but became uncomfortable with her label marketing her as “the Christian Cyndi Lauper.” She also had a desire to write songs that didn't reinforce people's religious beliefs. For her final Leslie Phillips album, she worked with future spouse/ex-spouse, T-Bone Burnett “a fellow Christian with a maverick approach to songs about faith and morality, and found a kindred spirit.” She decided to rebrand and start recording as Sam Phillips. Sam and T-Bone worked together from 1988's The Indescribable Wow to 2004's A Boot and a Shoe.In our conversation, we talk about Sam's writing process, which she is always changing up. She comes up with her best ideas when she “turns off the trying part of her brain,” but at the same time, she strongly believes in the power of editing. Sam's probably best known for composing and performing the score for the beloved Amy Sherman-Palladino series The Gilmore Girls, for which she also made a brief appearance on the season finale in 2006. You remember those “La la la's” while Lorelei and Rory carried around their armpit purses, drank coffee and while wearing those horrible boot cut jeans? That was Sam Phillips! Currently, Sam is working on a new album and she's taking her time, so don't rush her, OK?Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

We give you a bit of Beatles history, and comment on the Super Deluxe version of the album.Pictures of our favourite cookbooks were very popular, so we talk about why they're so good. Hey everyone, Coming to you with more sad news today. When I woke up this morning, I was bombarded with messages that Leslie Phillips, who famously voiced the Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter films, has passed away at the age of 98. Phillips, who was pushing a century, died peacefully in his sleep after a long battle with illness. Though Phillips will be known to most of you as the voice behind Godric Gryffindor's hat, Phillips had a long and illustrious career well before the Harry Potter Films, featuring in over 200 movies, TV series and radio shows collectively. He was also very well known for his role in the ‘Carry On' franchise in the late 50s.

Joining Tyler this week is Jon Auty from Behind the Stunts to talk about a 1971 British comedy film featuring some of the biggest names in comedy and light entertainment at the time. The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins was conceived, directed and produced by Graham Stark and he managed to bring together the likes of Bruce Forsyth, Harry H Corbett, Leslie Phillips, Alfie Bass, June Whitfield, Ronnie Barker and others to appear in a series of interlinked sketches illustrating the titular sins. Notably, it also featured two Goons - Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe - the former writing and appearing in a standout sequence called 'Sloth' while his erstwhile colleague adopts a series of desperate disguises to hoodwink Geoffrey Bayldon in 'Envy'. Things discussed include: On The Buses, recasting with Terry Scott, Paul Hardcastle's The Wizard, walnuts, Keith Flint from The Prodigy, 'Boob Coverage', Bert Kwouk's stunt double, the extremely talented Madeline Smith, the mystery of DB Cooper and much much more! Check out Jon's work: linktr.ee/behindthestunts

And to help us see the Sixth Doctor on his way we have returning guest Abby Denton! Does this story act as a fitting final Colin Baker story to be covered? How does Leslie Phillips do returning to the series? And how well has the Sixth Doctor fared overall in audio? Plus in Recommendations we have a film, a stage production and - uniquely - an animal. Some songs you enjoy in the background while others take up residence in your bones. Sam Phillips' music is in the latter category. She was Christian pop artist Leslie Phillips until she outgrew those constraints and, as Sam, began releasing such transcendent songs as “Holding On to the Earth” and “I Need Love” and wonderful albums such as the spirited The Indescribable Wow, the tour de force Martinis and Bikinis and the intimate Fan Dance. What threat did she make to get released from her Christian label? How did she wind up playing a mute villain in Die Hard with a Vengeance? How is she still searching for the euphoric? She's as perceptive and spellbinding in conversation as in song.
A country house, a corpse - and the butler's not to blame. Gladys Mitchell's whodunit stars Mary Wimbush. and Leslie Phillips.

In this episode of The Kevin Clifton Show, Kevin chats with Lucas Rush, the actor who played Lonny in the UK tour of the musical Rock of Ages. Discover today some of Lucas' theatre stories (especially his Rock of Ages experience), the nature of performing arts, the training that happens before any performance, and many more. Not everyone would notice, but being a theatre actor demands a lot of dedication—you need the consistent effort to rehearse and improve, you need the bulletproof mindset to not get influenced by negative feedbacks, and anything, really, that would help you give a top-notch performance every single time. There will be uncomfortable situations. But there will also be no pauses. No halts. No excuses. The show must go on, as they say. Listen to Lucas' experience and learn more about the performing arts. KEY TAKEAWAYS Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was the beginning for Lucas. It was the first cassette he bought; It was the first musical he ever watched. This musical opened him to the beauty of theatre and the performing arts. No one can ever downplay what live performers and theatre actors do. They provide entertainment, escape, and happiness to the viewers, aside from the fact that they portray ideas, concepts, stories, and experiences in this world that the viewer might relate to. Just like any professionals, they have some good days and some bad days. But it's more difficult for theatre actors to deliver when they're being influenced by some sudden negative pull. The audience can see through the performers, and as much as possible, it's a 100% performance they want to give every time. Lucas also admits that, on some days, he thrives on the energy the audience gives off. He can be put off when he sees that they are disinterested and unsatisfied, but he's known long enough not to let others' perception crash his fearlessness and boldness on stage. BEST MOMENTS “The more you remind yourself that ‘you can't hear a smile', the better.” “Don't stop yourself from thinking certain things or feeling certain ways. They're going to happen and you're just going to learn how to deal with them.” “Accept what you have in that moment.” “I love feeling things… I want to feel strong emotions.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Happiness Podcast - www.happinesspodcast.org Rock of Ages Musical - www.rockofagesmusical.co.uk ABOUT THE GUEST Lucas Rush Lucas stepped onstage at The Hackney Empire at the age of 7, receiving his very first acting lessons from Brian Blessed. He was introduced to Shakespeare at the age of 9 and by the time he was 13 was playing Robin in The RSC's production of "The Merry Wives of Windsor" alongside Leslie Phillips. His West End debut soon followed, as he performed as "Gavroche" in Les Misérables at The Palace Theatre. At the age of 14, he landed the role of Rowan Neville in ITV Drama Walking on The Moon, a hard-hitting gritty drama about bullying directed by Bafta Award winning Director Peter Kosminsky. Since those early days Lucas has enjoyed a very successful career, experiencing all corners of the Entertainment industry. In his 25 years as a professional actor Lucas has found that the thing, he loves more than anything is simply to immerse himself in any character he is playing, regardless of the genre.
