A chaotic, shambolic and critically panned parody, the first on-screen incarnation of Ian Fleming's novel ‘Casino Royale' received its London premiere on 12th April, 1967 - with final edits still being made in the projection room. Nonetheless, it went on to take an extraordinary $40 million at the box office. Hardnut hero James Bond's adventures had become a swinging Sixties sex comedy starring Peter Sellers, thanks to Fleming's disasterous decision to sell the movie rights to actor Gregory Ratoff for a song long before Bond was known all around the world thanks to the highly succesful film versions of his later books ‘Dr No' and ‘From Russia With Love'. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal how producer Charles K Feldman assembled such an impressive cast list for his 007 ensemble, including Orson Welles, Ronnie Corbett and Ursula Andress; explain how an on-set visit by Princess Margaret prompted an enormous clash of egos; and ponder why ‘the Spice World of the Sixties' became such a box office hit… Further Reading: • ‘Casino Royale movie review & film summary' (Roger Ebert, 1967): https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/casino-royale-1967 • ‘The Casino Royale calamity: how Peter Sellers turned Bond into a laughing stock' (Daily Telegraph, 2021): https://www.telegraph.co.uk/films/0/casino-royale-calamity-peter-sellers-turned-bond-laughing-stock/ • ‘Casino Royale: Official Trailer' (MGM, 1967): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onhWav2DejM Love the show? “Something's been worrying me. You're a French police officer and yet you've got a Scottish accent.” -“Aye. It worries me too.” Before Daniel Craig was even a twinkle in his father's eye (give it a couple of months) there was the 1967 original big screen version of Casino Royale, a far-from-subtle James Bond spoof based extremely loosely on Ian Fleming's first novel, which would go on to become the bedrock for all subsequent Austin Powers movies! How to best describe Casino Royale? Baffling, bloated, self-indulgent, messy - yes, all these apply. However, it's a fascinating celluloid confection and there are plenty of interesting aspects to the film, plus a handful of chuckles along the way. Famously suffering from temperamental stars (step forward Mr Sellers) and multiple directors, and shot through with the psychedelic sentiment of the time, Casino Royale is worth watching for the cast alone: along with the aforementioned Peter Sellers we have Orson Welles, David Niven, Woody Allen, Deborah Kerr, Ursula Andress, John Huston, Bernard Cribbens, Ronnie Corbett, Anna Quayle, John Bluthal, John Wells, Geoffrey Bayldon, Peter O'Toole and even Derek Nimmo! This week Tyler is joined by Martin Holmes, the host of Vision On Sound - https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/visiononsound - to try and make sense of it all!

The podcast celebrates its most positive episode in six years. Sam relaunches shitistics for the first time in 53 episodes, Dennis is all regattas & goths, and Rob totally forgets to mention his bang-on 80% prediction. Plus, Daniel returns with the most tenuous of tenuous alphabetical links, and the sitcom embraces a Shakespearian sausage or two. Enjoy. “Best club and supporter base and most passionate fans in the AFL. It was the incentive to come to Collingwood.” Is Lachie being a little too Lobb-like? Time to Restump Podcast that and whatever we can scratch up and masquerade as Freo content. We've closed the door on the Lachie Shultz love-fest. We've got a tough home game against Brissie to kick things off and we're off to the Northern Territory later in the year. Zero round? Is there a potential the AFL is biting off its nose to spite its face? Is it watering down the spectacle and occasion of the traditional round one?The strategic plan… how are we actually travelling? Meet Morecambe and Wise -- that's Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise -- who formed one of Britain's most illustrious and best-loved double-acts of all time. From beginnings in post-WWII Great Britain the lads soon found a home first on radio, then with television series and specials that spanned 20 years. And, for many of those years, they produced Britain's most watched Christmas special -- a real tradition. Morecambe and Wise were versatile, with both men capable of song and dance as well as either the comic or straight man role. That versatility made them a huge influence on future British comics including Ben Elton and Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. Not bad for a couple of song and dance men who just wanted to make people laugh. As always find extra cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Morecambe and Wise? Morecambe and Wise had oodles of chemistry -- perfect for two guys who could flex between the comic and straight man parts with ease. Here is some typical banter with Shakespeare the focus. https://youtu.be/WMXz2SCqtfg?si=rMO19GXNPcWZD__6 As one of Britain's top variety shows, Morecambe and Wise were the place to be for pop stars including a man who was the biggest of all back in the early 1970s -- Tom Jones! -- who shows a bit of comedic flair himself. https://youtu.be/e66z6nnWKq0?si=Siv0_Hkb0kiPECpT One of Morecambe and Wise's secrets was the quality of their scripts, mostly written by Eddie Braben who also was the pen behind David Frost and Ronnie Corbett. It allowed them to draw top-notch guest stars including Andre Previn, here helping the boys with a classical music bit (taken from the 1971 M&W Christmas Special). https://youtu.be/R7GeKLE0x3s?si=sBr-gYcqixGc1l8j

"The Gall of Gary Barlow" The third Red Dwarf DVD was released twenty years ago this November. It's time for another voyage of re-disc-overy, as we cast our minds back to a time of the online retail wild west, blossoming friendships and intense fansite rivalry. Although in practice, we probably spend more time reminiscing about our early Dimension Jump experiences than anything else, thanks to the choice of extra to receive the commentary treatment this time round, Hattie's DJ Diary. The surrounding, extremely waffley discussion takes in such topics as Red Dwarf's history with the AA, Craig Charles's overdue royalty payments, and farting in Ronnie Corbett's face. Each and every special feature is covered, we just hope that whatever you're using to watch your DVDs these days can actually access the menus...Show notes

We don't want to upset the coach and cop a lecture for getting ahead of ourselves, but is it too early to give Luke Jackson a nudge in the father son direction? Let's hope he gets on the job in more ways than one. Time to Restump Podcast the news of arguably one Fremantle's biggest gets. Its not too often you get the chance to secure a 21-year-old Luke Jackson. David Walls, Peter Bell and JL just managed something remarkable and it will help set the club up for the next decade. Understandably many fans have some trepidation as we're still sporting the scars of many historic failed attempts with these types of deals. But Luke Jackson is a different kettle of big fish! He's a talent in the air, yet as good on the ground. A ruckman, a forward, a roving utility…. the purple prototypical hybrid, if you will. We're not about to break into celebratory song signalling his arrival because we'll leave that to the Freo social media team with their no doubt chart rocketing “Unicorn” banger… but we'll quietly nod in appreciation and acknowledgment and say… welcome to the Purple LJ.But while Jackson is the headline act, there's plenty more happening down at Limestone Park. We'll have a chat about Ronnie Corbett who couldn't have been more impressive in his interview, Josh Cyclone Treacy has been copping some seemingly unfair heat and what now for Lloyd “Braun” Meek? Are we sharpening the offer for Jeremy? Ronnie Corbett, Will Brodie and Jeremy Sharp? Is there a Gold Coast quota that needs filling?Lastly does the Luke Jackson news now spark the Rory Lobb deal to the Dogs? If the trade isn't of value does the club dig in? We'd like to think so. All that and plenty more on this momentous Monday where too much marvelling is never enough. Join us for our usual recap nonsense and put your best ears forward to be part of the starting twenty-two. "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Ladies n' Genminminminmin (er, min...) welcome to a very exciting Episode indeed! Yes, it's 'roll out the Red Carpet' time here in "The Good Listening To Show" Clearing as we warmly welcome Scottish TV Presenter & Broadcasting legend Ross King (MBE).Ross King is nothing short of a Broadcasting legend with 4 News Emmys, 2 Sony Awards, 1 Golden Mic - a Cycling Proficiency Test Certificate - a 25M Breastroke Certificate - a Duke of Edinburgh Award - and an Alan Partridge in a Pear Tree! A man completely at home on the red carpets of Hollywood at both the Oscars & the Golden Globes and always with his finger on the pulse of all the Showbizz news & gossip: As "Our Man in Hollywood" for the likes of the "Lorraine" Programme on ITV and "Good Morning Britain"!Multi-talented, multi-award-winning Hollywood ‘leg-end' Ross King is delightfully self-deprecating. Talking about his childhood dreams of playing professional football for Partick Thistle-nil, as he says Billy Connolly always called them, he quotes the manager's assessment of his talent in these words: “You'll wear out more mirrors, son, than football boots!” Or in reference to one of his many superstar interviews: “As George Clooney once said to me - ‘Get out of my garden!'” Ross King likes to make people laugh and is very happy to be the butt of the joke if that's what does the job. A great impressionist too with Sean Connory & Roger Moore to name but 2 (Ross is a self-confessed James Bond obsessive) with Ronnie Corbett as a cheeky-chappyand-much-shorter-chaser!He still describes himself as ‘a silly boy from Glasgow' who is delighted on a daily basis to be ‘a silly boy in Hollywood'. Ross King‘s feet remain comfortably on the ground, while his head is in the clouds. He says he is “too blessed to be stressed “. He constantly acknowledges all the people who have helped him get to where he is today - starting with his mum, dad and sister, moving on to his Maths Teacher, Roddy Hood, not for teaching him primary numbers or Pythagoras but for pointing him towards Hospital Radio aged 15. A year or so later, this led directly to Ross becoming the ‘Saturday Boy' for Radio Clyde. This good grounding experience as general factotum/gofer on live sports broadcasts provided Ross King with an early and an excellent show business portal. The record shows he made the most of it with a diverse and impressive body of work in various media for a variety of countries. Now with writing partner, Shari Low, Ross King has produced two books under the nom de plume Shari King. These are published by Macmillan and now the team has a third sparkling forward in the creative process. When Ross said he has red eyes, it's no wonder, given how much he has set himself to do. He is a humble man and yet he has so much to be proud of - some of which he talks about here. Listen up and be delighted! Reg Starkey Editor, Health Triangle Magazine“The Good Listening To: Your Life & Times With Me Chris Grimes!” is the Show & Podcast series that features “The Clearing”:Where all good Questions come to be asked - and all good Stories come to be told…Think 'Desert Island Discs' but in a Clearing - and with Stories rather than Music! With some lovely juicy Storytelling metaphors to also enjoy along the way:The Clearing itself - a Tree - a lovely juicy Storytelling exercise called “5-4-3-2-1” - some Alchemy - some Gold - a couple of random Squirrels - a cheeky bit of Shakespeare - and a CAKE!So it's all to play for! Hurrah!(…and indeed Huzzah!)Enjoy!

Earlier this year, Kamala Harris was sworn in as the first female black Asian American Vice President in history. 6 months on, some polling has been interpreted as saying she's the most unpopular Vice President in history. To discuss the recent polling and her work to date we are joined by Sharon D Austin, a professor of Political Science at the University of Florida and Melissa Milewski, a Lecturer in History at the University of Sussex As the government urges people to return to the office we hear your reactions and consider the impact on women. Boris Johnson has called for a “gradual” return over the summer but there've been suggestions that civil servants who want to continue to work from home should lose their London weighting or even part of their salary as they no longer incur travelling costs. For the wider workforce the chancellor and some business leaders are calling for people to taper off home working for the sake of their prospects, the economy as well as their wellbeing . We hear listener reaction to the idea and talk to Wendy Hallett who founded Hallett Retail twenty years ago to create a flexible working environment for herself when her children were young and she now advocates this for her entire staff. So how's your camping trip going then? Seemed a good staycation idea at the time, but what about the rain, mud and damp clothes? Have you given up the roaring fire and gone to the pub instead? We want to hear your funny stories. Listener Hannah, was camping in Norfolk last weekend: yes, that's right: when there was wind, rain and thunderstorms. You might not recognise her name but you will certainly be familiar with her work. Georgia Pritchett is a multi-award winning comedy and drama writer. We've been long time admirers of James and that has only grown since his recent foray into podcasting with host Paul Giblin on their highly recommended Pyllon Ultra James has been a key member of the Team GB 24 hour squad ever since he joined the exclusive 160 mile club at Tooting Bec in 2016. In the podcast we talk about James's wonderful beginnings in running ultras (he manages to compare himself to Ronnie Corbett - which is legendary in itself!) and his spectacular rise in winning big races and setting course records. James is also a run coach and he has the most beautiful way of sharing wise thoughts on everything from running controlled slower runs, to changing your nutrition to better fit your aims and everything from motivation to inspiration. It's difficult to pick out just one great quote but we love this: "Once you've found that niche - serve it profoundly. Don't make it wide and average - make it deep and brilliant" DUV Profile In Intro Daz is reading "Book of Trespass by Nick Hayes"

Iain Dale and Jacqui Smith give their views on Christmas restrictions, the tier system and veer off into some Ronnie Corbett style stories, before getting back on track to discuss the progress on a Brexit free trade deal. “In that moment I went absolutely rigid with real terror, far worse than facing Jeff Thomson.” That is John Cleese, sharing with Peter Oborne and Richard Heller on their latest cricket-themed podcast his experience as a performer of the “yips”, that dread loss of control which can blight cricketers on the field. He shares joyous memories of a lifelong love of cricket, which began watching the postwar Somerset team play at Clarence Park, Weston-super-Mare. A previous guest, Jeffrey Archer, might also have been in the crowd but he cannot remember meeting him there. He does remember the fast bowler and mighty hitter, Arthur Wellard, hitting a six so high in the air that it when it fell it burst through the roof of a tea tent and shattered much crockery beneath. He recalls two other personal favourite Somerset players. Horace Hazell was a very accurate slow left-armer but so portly that he was forced to pause before each delivery to reposition his flannels. Bertie Buse was an all-rounder with an eccentric run-up which he tried to imitate as a fledgling bowler, “like an Edwardian butler serving tea on a tray.” Somerset were a happy team to watch, regularly bottom of the County Championship. John remembers his shock of adjustment, even sense of vague disappointment, when they broke the pattern by winning the Gillette Cup in 1979.There were darker moments in Somerset cricket, and he shares movingly the experience of watching two of them. Harold Gimblett was an explosive opening batsman subject to deep depression, which eventually drove him to take his life. John describes seeing him walking back to long-off so sunk in gloom that he was not even aware that the ball had been struck towards him; his belated attempt to catch it resulted only in falling over and injuring himself on some scaffolding on the boundary. The second was watching Maurice Tremlett get “the yips” at Taunton, losing the bowling action which had earned him selection for England and delivering endless wides and no-balls. He recalls the horror of the crowd as they desperately willed him to complete the over. John reveals his long fear of a similar experience in his performing career, a fear which especially haunts comedians. He tells the story of his own “Tremlett moment.” It came during a sketch with Ronnie Corbett on live television for The Frost Report. Mercifully for posterity, John got through the awkward line which had given him sleepless nights, but he remembers Ronnie Corbett's surprise at his nervous amendment, when he described him as the tallest person he had ever met.John is modest about his prowess as an off-spinner at Clifton College, where he contributed to two victories at Lord's over their rivals, Tonbridge. Already very tall, he claims that his greatest successes came on the school's mid-season pitches where his hand appeared over the sightscreen against the background of a red brick building. (Joel Garner, another famous Somerset cricketer, would later enjoy a similar advantage.) John shares his joy at dismissing Denis Compton in a Clifton match despite an unco-operative wicketkeeper who wanted to see the great man bat. John explains why he did not play much after leaving Clifton, but shares the experience of a happy tour of Corfu with the Lords Taverners (renamed the Lords Tavernas) with Ken Barrington, Roy Kinnear and John Price of Middlesex and England. Discussing the influence of cricket on his work, John mentions his deep affection for the cricket-crazed Major in Fawlty Towers, a loving caricature of his father. He examines the treatment of English cricket in Monty Python as a monumentally dull experience narrated by idiotic backward-looking commentators. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6dl8ogAnd more...

The late, great Ronnie Corbett was a British national treasure for his work as a comedian and comedy actor. In this episode his actor daughter Sophie discusses what an amazing man, father and inspiration he was.In Almost Famous, Barnaby Slater chats to guests who also grew up with famous family members and asks how it has affected their journeys through life. As well as the inevitably hilarious anecdotes from guests having been surrounded by the bizarre world of celebrity all their lives, Almost Famous is also a serious look at how people’s perception of fame differs from the reality, and an insight into how an upbringing so close to the transient world of celebrity can have a bearing on life choices, relationships and mental health. If you like what you hear please click the subscribe button, send us any thoughts or questions you have in the comments section and rate the podcast out of 5 stars. He's pleased about this. At least, he thinks he is. But Barnaby has spent his life surrounded by fame. His father had a couple of hits as lead singer of a band from Liverpool in the 60s (not The Beatles, alas). His mother got to number 2 in the pop charts in the 70s, something Barnaby's male school teachers never failed to remind him of when creepily talking about the posters they had of her on their adolescent bedroom walls. In the early 90s Barnaby's stepfather was Angus Deayton, then the most famous TV comedy panel show presenter in the country and labelled "TV's Mr Sex" by the newspapers.Barnaby is aware that this isn't your average upbringing and after not-nearly-enough therapy wants to speak to other people who have grown up around celebrity to see how it has affected their own journey through life. He's particularly keen to chat to those who have gone in to a similar field as their famous parents/siblings, as he often worried about the impact that being known as Angus Deayton’s stepson would have on his own career, for better or worse. Seven James Bonds went to Casino Royale... Alex and James review what is quite possibly the worst film ever to feature James Bond (albeit in an unofficial, parodical capacity). We discuss the absolute mess that is 1967's Casino Royale, a comedy film in which the real 007 (apparently) and a bunch of fellow agents sharing his name and number try to save the world. 'Save the world' sounds vague, we grant you, but that's because it's honestly difficult to work out what this film is even about. Listen in to enjoy our thoughts on unconvincing Scottish accents, remote control ice cream vans and robot grouse drones, Ronnie Corbett's pacemaker, cartoon radiation burbs and a UFO invading London. Inequality makes people anxious. How? Well, according to Kate Pickett, in unequal societies we become more conscious of our position in society, more aware of our status. That creates anxiety. And that in turn is linked to all sorts of bad outcomes, such as obesity, lower life-expectancy, and higher levels of teenage pregnancy. It's also linked, claims Professor Pickett, to consumerism. In unequal societies, she says, we're more likely to want the branded watch or handbag. Then, as you'll hear, there's the weird connection between inequality and female attraction to men…. How often do you think about other peoples' opinion of you? In many parts of the world status is something we can change through education, occupation and wealth but what if you come from a culture where the status you are born with is inescapable? We speak to author Sujatha Gidla about growing up as one of India's Untouchables: the outcasts of the country's rigid Caste system. Lifestyle and fashion blogger Sasha Wilson shows us how high the status stakes are in the completive online world of Instagram. And is the pursuit of status bad for our mental health? Professor Richard Wilkinson believes so and argues that the bigger the gap between rich and poor the greater our obsession becomes with it. Finally, is status something we can just buy? Brian Hamilton runs a business selling Scottish noble titles to the highest bidder and so presenter Priscilla Ngethe considers becoming Baroness of Pentland… (Field recordings of the Shuar Ecuadorian Indians thanks to Mike Woloszyn and freesound.org) Image: John Cleese, Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett in the Class Sketch from Frost Over England, 1967 (Credit: BBC)

It has become something of a received wisdom within the present day that the mainstream media exist as the pinnacle of what is possible in sports journalism. Whilst it is not in our interest to reject this assumption, here at A Team of John O’Sheas we believe that some of the most perceptive insight regarding the top teams in the country comes from the fans themselves. In the course of this podcast series, we will be bringing together some of the most influential fans from across the Premier League to give you the low-down on the teams that they watch week in, week out. We’ll look back over the season just gone, try to get a handle on the transfer activity that rumbles on through the summer months, and look forwards to the next season which, as always, seems to creep up on us with ever increasing speed. In this episode, we’re back in the country’s capital city. Named after the famous exhibition on the site of whose ground they used to play, Crystal Palace have more recently established themselves as regulars in the Premier League. Having spent much of the 90s and 2000s in the second tier of English football, Palace are now enjoying a 4th consecutive season at the pinnacle of the football leagues. However, this dependability in the league has certainly not been matched in the dugout: you have to go back to 2009 before you find a calendar year in which Palace didn’t appoint a new manager with eleven managerial changes taking place in the last 5 years alone. With Frank de Boer now at the helm, the Eagles will no doubt be hoping for a respite from this frenetic turnover. But will he reproduce the form that led to Ajax winning four Eredivisies in a row? Or will he simply repeat the embarrassment of Inter? Joining us on the show today are two luminaries of Crystal Palace fandom. Richard Foster is a freelance sportswriter and author, mainly about football. A regular features contributor for the Guardian, he also written for Sky Sports, Football League, a variety of websites like Set Pieces and plenty of Palace fanzines like Five Year Plan, Hopkin Looking To Curl One as well as match reports for sponsor Mansion. He also appears regularly on radio - talkSPORT, Radio 5Live, BBC Radio London - especially when Play-Offs are in town as he has written the definitive book - The Agony & The Ecstasy – on the history of the competition. Richard’s first Palace match was 18th October 1969 & all he can remember that there was a very angry man with bright red hair who was swearing at anyone who came close to him. His next book The A-Z of Football Niggles published by Ockley will be out next month and features a variety of stellar contributors including the one and only Kevin Day. Kevin Day is a comedian, writer and broadcaster. He has performed on many continents and written for people ranging from Dave Allen to Kevin Spacey via Ronnie Corbett, and he is well known as "that bloke who bangs on about Palace all the time". Obviously awards don't matter but he wants you to know that he won a Sony Gold award as part of 5Live's coverage of Cheltenham and he was nominated for a BAFTA in 2016 for writing A League of Their Own.
The song this week is called "On The River" which is where I spent Tuesday afternoon in my Laser Dinghy....I like to get out on the River Dee at West Kirby with just me,the breeze, and the seals....paradise......we are very lucky to have this sailing facility here on Wirral...and if the tide is out we can use the large Marine Lake. This country is becoming like a bad comedy show.......our wonderful Prime Minister calls for a snap general election for no reason whatsoever and falls flat on her face...with a collection of M.P.s seeing their cushy job vanish overnight with Teresa nowhere to be seen....then we have Mr.Corbyn jumping up and down in celebration even though he LOST the election.. I watched a chap called Roy Larmer who was interviewed on the morning news programme....this was the chap who took on the terrorists during the recent London attacks....he was badly injured with wounds to his arms and neck but thankfully survived...he was talking about his experience which was very moving (despite the stupid question from Suzanne Reid)....it turns out that this hero is homeless and has no job....I really felt sorry for him....apparently a fund has been set up and up to now has raised 50 grand....which is all very well but considering this is ONE FIFTH of the fee Tony Blair gets for one after dinner speech.....PEOPLE ARE STILL ALIVE BECAUSE OF MR.LARMER!!!... Richard Hammond has had another near fatal crash....what an absolute idiot....and has "apologised' to his wife and family...it is...except some of them aren't as lucky as Hammond...and how much is this ego trip going to cost the health service?... There was a memorial service for Ronnie Corbett which was attended by lots of celebrities....to me he was a REAL comedian...and the sketches with Ronnie Barker were pure genius.......and finally Adam West also passed away... the ONLY Batman ... I actually went to his book signing in Liverpool and got the chance to shake his hand and thank him for all the good work he did in Gotham City....cool or what.

In 1967, the first cinematic adaptation of Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel 'Casino Royale' was released. Nestled in the final forty minutes of this infamously bizarre comedy's two-hour running time, the classic game of wits plot between Peter Sellers' James Bond and Orson Welles' Le Chiffre plays out. Except in this version, James Bond IS a code-name and agent 007 James Bond gives everyone his code name. He's played by David Niven. John Huston is in this too. So is Ronnie Corbett, Deborah Kerr, Ursula Andress, David Prowse, Peter O'Toole and even notorious child molestor Woody Allen. George Raft, William Holden, Caroline Munro and Geraldine Chaplin were also dragged into this. So many big names in this absolute mess edited together from several directors' footage. Jonathan concludes that this is it; THIS is the strangest film he's watched yet. Richard gives us a taste of this production's fascinatingly troubled history which is sadly not available in documentary form (unless we get crowdfunding going). Much of it is available on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casino_Royale_(1967_film)

The song this week is a tribute to Johnny King…the most successful manager of Tranmere Rovers…who sadly died this week. wrote the song in the late seventies when he was manager…with the idea of getting the players to record it…however there weren’t many of the lads who could sing in tune so my version…which was originally the demo…was put out and it was played over the speakers at the home games and on the coaches for the away game……I had the pleasure of visiting Johnny at his home…up until then I had sampled the odd whisky…when I left his house I had sampled a lot more…great guy..sad loss….there is a statue of him outside the ground. On the football front Leicester City are still top of the league and virtually everyone is supporting them….even inJapan…they had a programme on TV where they had sold out of Leicester football shirts in some town in the Far East…..it’s always nice to see the underdog coming through…I hope they win the premiership….and England are in the final of the 20/20 cricket world cup…the slogging one…much better than the drawn out 5– dayers…here we go…here we go…here we go. On the entertainment front Jeremy Kyle has replaced Piers Morgan on the morning breakfast news show….and I hate to admit it but he is very good…much better than Piers…which isn’t hard….I’m amazed Ant and Dec aren’t on there…. And we have had the sad news of the passing away of the great Ronnie Corbett…to me he was a comedy genius and together with Ronnie Barker produced some of the best comedy ever…those were the years when comedy was FUNNY unlike today…they have been showing some of his classic sketches which never date. And also Brian Conley is back in the afternoon with special guests who recall their favourite TV….I am a big fan o fBrian Conley..he is a huge talent which seems to go un-noticed. There has been a programme about our Queen at 90….it wasn’t very exciting as it was basically clips we’ve seen before…it simply displays the ridiculous pomp and ceremony surrounding various events…even the making sure that knives and forks are EXACTLY in the right place at Palace functions…and how much does all this nonsense cost?….I’m sure the homeless are delighted for them. .And finally….our southern shores have been battered by storms of late…100 mph gales…caused by “Storm Katie”….but it is a strange situation as we in the North West got away scot free…missed us completely which makes a change….no doubt the blame will rest firmly on global warming or diesel cars….as SOMETHING has to be blamed.

Al and I discuss writing and performing comedy for the stage and TV. Al worked on a TV show with David Steinberg and does a great impersonation of Steinberg, on the set, calling for a lunch break. He also mentions comedians who influenced him including Ronnie Corbett, Dave Alan, Tommy Smothers and Bob Newhart. Al is a recovering alcoholic, who came out of the closet a few years ago and we discuss how that has influenced his comedy. Finally, he mentions how the careers of Burroughs and Bukowski inspire him. Don't miss this podcast with one of the most successful guys on the Canadian comedy scene.

With only Comic Relief and a mini-SJA episode (story?) starring a flatulent Ronnie Corbett, the Three Who Rule had little in the way of solid material to mold into gorgeous verbal statuary with their mellifluous locution this week. But thanks to the power of digression, they managed to unleash a torrent of nonsense almost unparalleled in the annals of Skarosian myth and legend. And all of it for you, dear listeners.
Kirsty Young's castaway this week is an entertainer so central to British popular culture he can be identified by the outline of his glasses alone - Ronnie Corbett. For more than 50 years, from late night reviews to prime-time sit-coms, his comic talents have made us laugh and made us love him; a nattily turned out national treasure with a quick wit and a ready smile. His success is due, of course, to his own ability but also to two enduring and remarkable partnerships. Along with Ronnie Barker, he formed one of the great TV duos of all time whilst his 40-year marriage to his wife Ann saw her abandon her flourishing entertainment career to sustain him through the vicissitudes of fame and family life. Ronnie Corbett looks back over his life and career, from his days in review at Danny La Rue's club to his last ever programme with Ronnie Barker - a moment that brought them both to tears.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Music Maestro Please by Ann Hart Book: Untold Stories by Alan Bennett Luxury: A hammock.
