Melbourne resident Saurabh Mishra has been recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for his outstanding service to the community. After more than two decades volunteering at a palliative care centre, he supports patients and helps document and preserve their life stories through the centre's care programs. He is also co-founder and organiser of the Melbourne International Festival of Hindustani Classical Music, now in its sixth year. La rotta del Mediterraneo centrale è una delle più pericolose al mondo, secondo l'OIM, l'organizzazione internazionale per le migrazioni. Nelle acque internazionali della zona libica SAR (Search and Rescue), tra marzo e aprile 2026, si è svolta la quarantaduesima missione della Life Support, la nave di ricerca e soccorso di Emergency. L'imbarcazione ha portato in salvo donne, uomini e minori accompagnati e non, per un totale di settantuno persone. Durante la navigazione la Life Support è stata seguita ripetutamente da imbarcazioni non ben identificabili e dalla Guardia Costiera libica, che ha intercettato e respinto verso la propria terraferma due barche cariche di migranti che rischiavano di affondare, verso cui era diretta la Life Support.La provenienza da paesi come Mali, Costa d'Avorio, Burkina Faso, Ciad, Guinea Conakry e Camerun narra di come guerre, instabilità politica, violazione dei diritti umani, crisi climatica e fame siano alla base delle motivazioni che spingono le persone a cercare in Europa un futuro migliore. Lo fanno compiendo viaggi lunghissimi dall'Africa subsahariana fino alla Libia, dove subiscono razzismo, campi di lavoro obbligatori, violenze efferate e detenzioni arbitrarie sia al primo arrivo che ogni volta in cui i libici li intercettano in mare, riportandoli indietro. President Trump says the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran is on “massive life support” after Iran's latest counterproposal to end the war. Media reports say Tehran's offer included demands for war reparations…control over the Strait of Hormuz…an end to U.S. sanctions…and the return of frozen assets. Iran also sought to keep nuclear talks separate from negotiations over the Strait. The president called the terms “simply unacceptable.” He spoke to reporters at the White House today — we'll play some of what he said. Congress is back in town this week after a weeklong recess…with Republicans looking to use the reconciliation process to fund immigration enforcement without Democratic support. Also on tap this week: an extension of the nation's warrantless surveillance powers, set to expire June 15th. And the 17 Americans who were aboard a cruise ship with a hantavirus outbreak are back in the U.S. today…where they'll be quarantined and monitored. One passenger has tested positive for the virus.
