From Russia With Love is one of the most famous and well-regarded James Bond movies. There is even a 3rd person video game based on it! That's how you know it was legit. James Bond travels to Istanbul to check out a lead on a Lektor machine to crack some codes. SPECTRE, of course, set a trap for James Bond and with Tatiana Romanova, who is a fake defector of the Soviet Union. This movie has it all: explosions, shootouts, sexy scenes, and a touch of racism, which is a perfect way to encapsulate the early '60s.Remember to join our Discord for movie nights and further podcast discussions!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-other-half/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

A chaotic, shambolic and critically panned parody, the first on-screen incarnation of Ian Fleming's novel ‘Casino Royale' received its London premiere on 12th April, 1967 - with final edits still being made in the projection room. Nonetheless, it went on to take an extraordinary $40 million at the box office.  Hardnut hero James Bond's adventures had become a swinging Sixties sex comedy starring Peter Sellers, thanks to Fleming's disasterous decision to sell the movie rights to actor Gregory Ratoff for a song long before Bond was known all around the world thanks to the highly succesful film versions of his later books ‘Dr No' and ‘From Russia With Love'. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal how producer Charles K Feldman assembled such an impressive cast list for his 007 ensemble, including Orson Welles, Ronnie Corbett and Ursula Andress; explain how an on-set visit by Princess Margaret prompted an enormous clash of egos; and ponder why ‘the Spice World of the Sixties' became such a box office hit…  Further Reading: • ‘Casino Royale movie review & film summary' (Roger Ebert, 1967): https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/casino-royale-1967 • ‘The Casino Royale calamity: how Peter Sellers turned Bond into a laughing stock' (Daily Telegraph, 2021): https://www.telegraph.co.uk/films/0/casino-royale-calamity-peter-sellers-turned-bond-laughing-stock/ • ‘Casino Royale: Official Trailer' (MGM, 1967): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onhWav2DejM Love the show? Irish woman Johanna Harwood is not widely-known, but she should be. She wrote the screenplays for the James Bond movies 'Dr. No' and 'From Russia With Love' including coming up with the "Goya Joke" - one of the most famous visual jokes in the whole series. Not long after, she gave it all up to go and live in Paris with a French film director, René Clémont. Not a straightforward relationship because he was already married and stayed married until his wife, Bella's death. Now in her 90s (refusing to reveal her exact age) and living in Monaco, Johanna looks back on a life almost as colourful and exciting as any Bond script! Talking all about the classic Alfred Hitchcock thriller, action, comedy film, North By Northwest of 1959. Starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, and Jessie Royce Landis. A spy thriller of a mistaken identity and a continual chase across the country. With all sorts of fantastic locations, dazzling special effects, and quite a bit of witty comedy to boot. This is the film that inspired the way James Bond 007 movies would emulate, starting with Dr. No and From Russia With Love. You can totally see that here in the North By Northwest. It also reminds me a lot of a pre Coen Brothers style too with a normal character being thrown into extreme situations. James Bond themes were handled by soulful or sultry vocalists in the decade since 1963's “From Russia With Love.” Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones and even Louis Armstrong had taken turns singing themes and secondary themes for the films. The Broccoli family who produces the James Bond franchise expected nothing less when they asked Paul McCartney to write the theme for “Live and Let Die.” What they didn't expect was for him to perform it too. And for the song—1973's “Live and Let Die”—to become the most popular theme of the series thus far. “McCartney: A Life in Lyrics” is a co-production between iHeart Media, MPL and Pushkin Industries. The series was produced by Pejk Malinovski and Sara McCrea; written by Sara McCrea; edited by Dan O'Donnell and Sophie Crane; mastered by Jason Gambrell with sound design by Pejk Malinovski. The series is executive produced by Leital Molad, Justin Richmond, Lee Eastman and Scott Rodger. CRAIG & BRIAN WATCH 007 / 002 :: FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE a P&S/PRP presentation Legions of 007 fans can't be wrong!  YOU demanded it and we listened!  Craig & Brian ARE BACK and ready to tackle the thrill-packed, danger-ridden second installment of the long-running James Bond film franchise: From Russia with Love!! Craig Smith, rapidly approaching a dozen movies watched in lifetime and now fully caffeine-free, leads an exciting discussion that follows gentleman secret agent James Bond around the globe from England to Turkey to Yugoslavia to Italy.  Brian Linnen, rather embarrassed after years of telling his friends and family that he coined the phrase "Where there's smoke there's fire", does his best to flavor the discussion with trivia from his years of Bond fandom.  And taking a cue from the film itself, the two end the episode by engaging in ritualistic hand-to-hand gypsy combat for the love of Minnesota's pride and joy, Andy Schaal. Craig and Brian feel that 60 years is enough time for everyone to have watched "From Russia with Love", so spoilers will be flying faster than a Peter Hunt edited fight scene!  You have been warned!! Thanks to Robbie Sims for lending his dulcet tones to the show's introduction, and to the Jingle Punks for the use of their cool spy song "Choose Your Path."
