We've had a number of masterful movies this season and Women Talking is another one. Q: How do you tell a story when everything you've ever known is at stake? A: Consider the pros and cons using multiple protagonists. This is a great movie where the level of writing craft is high, and the core event provides more relief than you thought possible. If you can bear to watch this movie more than once, it will be worth it. -M. Adam Kay knew exactly who he wanted to play him in the TV version of his life. After spending years working in hospitals across the UK, mostly in obstetrics and gynaecology, Adam—completely burnt out—took a break. What was meant to be a short pause turned into 14 years and counting. During his training in the labour wards, Adam kept a diary. Those diary entries would later become a best-selling book (This Is Going To Hurt, which sold over 5 million copies), and eventually a hit TV series starring Ben Whishaw as Adam. In this candid, emotional, and at times hilarious conversation, Adam talks about: – The human cost of being a doctor– Why mental health support in medicine is so urgently needed– What changes are essential—both in the UK and here in Australia– And… the strangest things people have turned up to hospital with inside their bodies. This episode is a must-listen for anyone who’s ever been a patient, worked in healthcare, or simply wants to understand the real cost of caring. If you'd like to see Adam Kay live in Australia, he's currently touring the country. You can look at his tour dates here.

We have early reviews today of a couple big Valentine's Weekend movies: That's how much we love you here at Breakfast All Day. First, the disappointing "Captain America: Brave New World," which looked like it had potential as a suspenseful, '70s-style political thriller. Anthony Mackie is very good as he straps on the shield and steps into Chris Evans' Avengers role, but the movie itself is a mess. In theaters. Then, we were both delighted by "Paddington in Peru," the follow-up to one of Alonso's favorite movies ever, 2017's "Paddington 2." Ben Whishaw returns as the gentle voice of Britain's beloved bear, leading the way through madcap adventures in the Amazonian jungle. Also in theaters. Check back with us on Friday when we'll have reviews of the music documentaries "Becoming Led Zeppelin" and "Sly Lives!" Thanks for being here.

We're journeying from the jungles of Darkest Peru to Jolly Ol' London Town in this adaptation of the beloved children's stories by Michael Bond. The Bond is strong with Q actor Ben Whishaw who voices the precocious titular bear. The cast is stacked with talent, including Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, and Nicole Kidman in key roles, with Michael Gambon and Imelda Stauton lending their voice talents. The director is Paul King (he of The Mighty Boosh), here helming the picture to critical and commercial success, to the tune of two BAFTA nominations and over $300 million at the box office. But are our hosts as enamored with the end result, or did we find it… unbearable? Exit the intro, pursued by a bear: Paddington Bear. Oh, bother. Welcome to TV Break, where Pop Break's Podcasts Editor Alex Marcus is joined by editor-in-chief Bill Bodkin, and TV Columnist Josh Sarnecky to talk about the happenings in television. Here's the format of the show: The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Alex, Bill, & Josh talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including Max's Creature Commandos, Disney Plus's Skeleton Crew & What If, and Netflix's No Good Deed. Streaming Wars – Alex, Bill, & Josh pick a streamer they think “won the month” based on new shows airing/upcoming shows announced etc. All three hosts had to hand it to Netflix for thoroughly dominating the holidays with record breaking NFL games, music performances by Beyonce, Sabrina Carpenter, & Chapelle Roan, comedy specials from Jaimie Fox and Nate Bargatze, hit TV shows like Squid Game and Black Doves, and hit movies like Carry On, The Six Triple Eight, and Emilia Perez, which has also become an awards season juggernaut. New Series Spotlight – This month, we are reviewing Netflix's Black Doves. The series was created by British TV vet Joe Barton, and follows Helen Webb, a politician's wife by day and covert spy by night, who attempts to unwind the mysterious conspiracy surrounding her lover's death without blowing her cover. The series stars Academy Award nominee Kiera Knightly as Helen, alongside her best friend and trigger man Sam, played by Ben Whishaw, and her shadowy handler Mrs. Reade, played by UK TV legend Sarah Lancashire.

Episode 089: Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: Matthew McFrederick Welcome to The Play Podcast where we explore the greatest new and classic plays. Each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We'll discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. Samuel Beckett's tragicomedy, Waiting for Godot, is a notoriously confounding work of theatre. The play is renowned for its lack of conventional plot or exposition, and for its existential predicament. Given its desolate philosophical landscape it is also surprisingly funny. Its theatrical imagery and intellectual provocation remain as potent as when it was first performed in Paris in 1953. As we record this episode an illustrious production is on stage at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London starring Ben Whishaw and Lucian Msamati. I am delighted to be joined by Dr Matt McFrederick from the University of Reading to help survey this famously challenging landmark of modern drama.
Sabrina Carpenter has been accused of ‘marketing' herself using problematic Lolita references, so we discuss in light of her new Netflix Christmas special A Nonsense Christmas. Plus, Keira Knightley is back on our screens with the highly entertaining spy thriller Black Doves, but will the media be kinder to her this time? Also, ‘brain rot' is the word of the year, to which we hard relate, and Amy Adams's new motherhood horror film, Nightbitch, has left us reeling. On this week's show, the hosts chew over Nightbitch, Marielle Heller's (Queen's Gambit, Can You Ever Forgive Me, The Diary of a Teenage Girl, MacGruber), fourth feature film. Amy Adam stars as “Mother,” a former artist who has given up her creative pursuits to care for her infant son full-time — a transition so taxing, that she begins dissociating and transforming into a dog at night. And while there's a lot to like here (it's an adaptation of Rachel Yonder's magical realism novel of the same name, for example), does the film ever achieve lift-off? Then, the three rip Black Doves to shreds, Netflix's latest espionage show starring Keira Knightly, Sarah Lancashire, and Ben Whishaw that has far too many plot holes to name (although, Stephen does try to.) Finally, the panel digs into the strange case of Luigi Mangione, the suspected shooter in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson — and the internet's sardonic, if not jubilant, reaction to the fatal shooting. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel explores the celebrity look-alike contest: a puzzling and mildly delightful phenomenon that's been sweeping the nation. Deposits into this account are used to purchase 10 investment-grade and high-yield bonds. As of 9/26/24, the average, annualized yield to worst (YTW) across the Bond Account is greater than 6%. A bond's yield is a function of its market price, which can fluctuate; therefore, a bond's YTW is not “locked in” until the bond is purchased, and your yield at time of purchase may be different from the yield shown here. The “locked in” YTW is not guaranteed; you may receive less than the YTW of the bonds in the Bond Account if you sell any of the bonds before maturity or if the issuer defaults on the bond. The small screen is covered in spycraft at the moment and DtW is sneaking up on a couple of new shows! Dan and Raul combed the monthly TV premieres microfiche to find that most streamers are sending out a spy series or two this season and picked the pilots of The Agency and Black Doves to see if they self-destruct or accomplish their mission. The Agency's A-lister star Michael Fassbender displays the meticulousness of a field agent of a non-murderous sort (so far) as the show displays how a man can balance the clandestine with a love story amidst looming international chaos. Meanwhile, in Kiera Knightly's Black Doves, she's lost her love to mysterious circumstances at the end of a sniper rifle, and she needs the help of old friend Ben Whishaw to get to the revenging for her extramarital paramore. She's also balancing a regular life with this cloak and dagger shenanigans, although she's built a loving family out of a sham marriage that was once deep cover but may end up with her next to the UK Prime Minister. Both shows go hard on the spyjinks, but are they worth watching til the end? This podcast is your secret decoder ring to the truth!
It's all the fours with episode 444 of the Geektown Radio podcast as Darryl From Hollywood North News joins Dave to chat about all the latest TV, film and games news & reviews! As always Darryl brings an interesting mix of mainstream and slightly more obscure film and TV reviews along with him! He has also picked up the first season of Netflix dramedy 'The Lincoln Lawyer', and moves on to a new legal drama which has recently dropped onto Sky Witness and NOW, 'Matlock'. Meanwhile, Dave reviews the new Netflix (and surprisingly festive!) thriller from the brilliant Joe Barton, 'Black Doves' starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw, along with the really fun new Disney+ series 'Star Wars: Skeleton Crew'. He also chats about what he got up to at the recent MCM Comic Con Birmingham.Over in the news updates, we have one cancellation and a surprising number of renewals for the time of year, including the Paramount hiring 'The Agency' again, more adult adventures on Disney+ from Jilly Cooper, and more murdering from the ubiquitous Ella Purnell. We also have news on a 'Scrubs' revival, whether another spin-off from 'The Rookie' is a good idea, the showrunners from ‘Grey's Anatomy' doing English period drama, and lots more! We're back in side the Agency this week as the stars of that show, Michale Fassbender and Jeffrey Wright, stop by to chat covert action (26:07). To cap off our Friendsgiving month, we welcome back Christina and Mac from World of Horror Podcast to talk about a feel-good family film that is as sweet as a delicious piece of pecan pie a la mode -- Paddington 2! We discuss the movie's heartfelt themes of family, being yourself, and building community; how Paddington's perspective as an immigrant makes his contributions to society even more unique and valuable; the brilliant use of CGI and visual storytelling that enhances the film rather than replacing the work of artists; the amazing performances from Hugh Grant, Sally Hawkins, Brendan Gleeson, and Ben Whishaw, who brings real humanity to a little bear; and how Christina uses Paddington to teach ethics in the classroom. This film is like a warm hug from a relative you've missed for a long time, and we can't think of a better movie to discuss for Thanksgiving! We are grateful for all our guests this month, and we are grateful to you, our listeners, for giving us a chance to talk movies with you year-round. Have a safe, happy, and comfort-filled Thanksgiving!
My guest today is Rupert Goold - the double-Olivier-winning, Tony-nominated director behind such shows as Dear England, Enron, Ink, King Charles III, Tammy Faye, Patriots, and Cold War. His screen career includes directing Ben Whishaw in the BBC adaptation of Richard II, James Franco and Jonah Hill in the movie True Story, and perhaps most notably directing Renée Zellweger's Oscar winning performance as Judy Garland in 2019's Judy. This summer, we met in the boardroom of the Almeida (of which he's Artistic Director), to talk about directing film vs theatre, when to give an actor a note, his early inspirations, what he looks for in emerging talent, how to cast Hamlet, and so much more.
Theatres at the moment are working like time machines, whisking audiences back to the 1950s as a new generation of directors explore the work of the past. Sarah and Alex explore the revivals from Look Back in Anger and Roots at the Almeida to Waiting for Godot starring Ben Whishaw and Lucian Msamati Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Lucian Msamati has played leading roles on our most famous stages: Salieri in Peter Shaffer's Amadeus at the National Theatre, Iago in Othello at the Royal Shakespeare Company and Estragon opposite Ben Whishaw in Waiting for Godot at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London. He started out performing – in his words – ‘for farmers sitting on beer crates in rural Africa, with tables for a stage'. And when he decided to leave Zimbabwe, where he began his career, to see if he could make it in the UK, he had to work as a cleaner to pay the bills. His perseverance paid off: as well as success on stage, he's appeared in high-profile TV shows, including Game of Thrones and the Number One Ladies Detective Agency. After his role in Amadeus, it's no surprise to find Mozart among his musical passions, which also include Satie, Tchaikovsky and an unusual track by Stevie Wonder.Presenter Michael Berkeley Producer Clare Walker

Madeline, Julian, and Emilio continue their "Musicians on Film" episode cycle with a "Two-Shot" entry on a pair of unforgettable cinematic portrayals of Bob Dylan, namely D. A. Pennebaker's trailblazing 1967 documentary "Dont Look Back" (apostrophe not included), and Todd Haynes' kaleidoscopic 2007 film "I'm Not There." As two of many films out there which focus on the enigmatic musician, the group aims to distill from them whatever greater truths they can, both about Dylan himself and broader musical artistry and publicity. Starting with "Dont Look Back," they consider how the film's fly-on-the-wall look at Dylan's 1965 tour of England serves to dually build the legend and arguably demystify its young and newly famous subject. They then fast-forward forty years to "I'm Not There," which refracts Dylan's well-established mythos into a sprawling, non-linear ensemble drama that illuminates as much about the artist as it obscures. The two films also mark milestones for the podcast itself, the former being the first documentary which the trio cover in-depth, and the latter being the third Todd Haynes film they've discussed, making him the most-covered director on the show to date.If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. Adam Kay was born in Brighton to Jewish parents, his father was a doctor and he too went into medicine gynaecology and obstetrics. After a traumatic experience in the operating theatre, Adam left medicine and wrote his first memoir…This is Going to Hurt. It covered his time as a trainee doctor and became not only a bestseller, but was adapted by him, into the TV series of the same name, starring Ben Whishaw as Adam. He won a BAFTA for his writing. His most recent memoir, Undoctored, was much, much more personal. Radically honest in fact - from revealing his previous marriage to a woman before finding love with his now husband, to talking about abuse and having an eating disorder. He's also written fact and fiction books for children. explaining some of the more astonishing, and often revolting stories from the world of science and medicine. We've got a classic on BTTM today that's all killer. DJ and bookseller Elisa Garcia selected PERFUME, the 1985 German novel by Patrick Süskind that was originally deemed unfilmable. But co-screenwriter and director Tom Tykwer (RUN LOLA RUN, BABYLON BERLIN) surely got the job done in 2006. Elisa joins Allan, Tyler, and Justin to discuss the best bits of the book, the genius of Ben Whishaw's lead performance, and... whatever Dustin Hoffman was doing. Smells like a great episode! Hosted by Tyler Austin, Justin Remer, and Allan Traylor. Produced by Justin Remer. Recorded at the LAPL Octavia Lab. Opening music: "Optimism (Instrumental)" by Duck the Piano Wire Closing music: "Rule of 3s (Solemnity Child)" by Elastic No-No Band
This week we are discussing The Lobster! From the delightfully demented mind of Yorgos Lanthimos, this black comedy follows a new bachelor who has 45 days to find a romantic partner, else he will be turned into a lobster. Starring Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Jessica Barden, Olivia Colman, Ashley Jensen, Ariane Labed, Angeliki Papoulia, John C. Reilly, Léa Seydoux, Michael Smiley, and Ben Whishaw, this film examines the social laws we create for ourselves and their consequences in our search for love in the world... Book Vs. Movie: PaddingtonThe 1958 Children's Book Vs. the 2014 MovieThe Margos are feeling very British in this episode! English author Michael Bond created Paddington Bear, who first appeared in Bond's 1958 book A Bear Called Paddington and has since become a beloved character in numerous books, television series, and films. Claire and Gavia discuss Ira Sachs' acclaimed new romantic drama Passages, starring Franz Rogowski and Ben Whishaw as a married couple who become embroiled in a love triangle with a young woman (Adele Exarchopoulos). We delve into the film's attitude to queer identity, its best-of-the-year costume design, and its thoughtfully choreographed sex scenes.
This week's Empire Podcast sees the arrival of Chris Hewitt's pre-beloved The Equalizer 3, and that film's director, the delightfully sweary Antoine Fuqua, joins Chris to talk about that film, about the challenges of getting Denzel Washington to ride a horse (not for this film), and ultra-violence on the big screen. With blood and gore already covered off, our other guest, Passages writer/director Ira Sachs, talks about the challenges of shooting sex scenes, and battling censorship, for his new film, which sees Franz Rogowski, Ben Whishaw, and Adele Exarchopoulos engage in a love triangle. Then, in the podbooth, Chris is joined for a raucous episode by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer and, making her debut in the fourth chair, Australian author and massive geek Maria Lewis. She tells us all about her encounters with a brown snake, her upcoming book The Graveyard Shift, and chats with the podteam about their favourite numerical system when it comes to sequels and franchises, the week's movie news (such as it is), and even chips in during the reviews section, when the team take a look at The Equalizer 3, Cobweb, Passages, Vacation Friends 2 and You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah. Oh, and the presence of an Australian in the podbooth can mean only one thing: hold onto your ears, the Aussie accents are coming out. Fair dinkum. Enjoy.
With almost all ballots counted in Turkey's crucial general election, both sides say they'll accept a run-off vote.
