Join us for Hammer's Hands of the Ripper, a 1971 British horror film released as the second half of a double feature with Twins of Evil. Directed by Peter Sasdy, produced by Aida Young, and written by L.W. Davidson from a story by Edward Spencer Shew. Making good use of the large Baker Street set at Pinewood Studios—left over from The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes—the production was denied permission to film its final scenes at St. Paul's Cathedral, so a replica was constructed instead. If the Pritchards' home and staircase look familiar, it's because Hammer's ever-resourceful set designers reused elements from The Curse of Frankenstein years earlier (see episode 2 of our podcast for more on that classic). Director Peter Sasdy, who cited Hands of the Ripper as his favourite film, also directed the original Adrian Mole TV series (both The Secret Diary and The Growing Pains), three episodes of Hammer House of Horror, and two other Hammer features: Countess Dracula and Taste the Blood of Dracula (the latter coming to the podcast later this year, hopefully). Most monumentally, he directed the legendary BBC sci-fi thriller The Stone Tape (definitely check General Witchfinders number 5—our third most popular episode to date!). Eric Porter stars as Doctor Pritchard. Renowned for his work in film, television, and theatre, he famously played Professor Moriarty opposite Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes and Soames Forsyte in The Forsyte Saga. Angharad Rees plays Anna, the daughter of the Ripper. She appeared in Boon (take a drink), starred as Demelza in 28 episodes of Poldark, and, the year after Hands of the Ripper, featured in Under Milk Wood alongside Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, and Elizabeth Taylor. She was made a Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, had a pub named after her in Pontypridd (sadly now a card shop), and founded a Knightsbridge jewellery company, Angharad. Pieces she designed were featured in Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Wikipedia also notes she was once in a relationship with Alan Bates, which we mention only to plug episode 35, where we talked about The Shout.Lynda "Nurse Gladys Emmanuel" Baron appears as Long Liz—a curious name choice considering Long Liz was an actual canonical Ripper victim. Here, she's depicted alive and well (at least initially), years after Saucy Jack's supposed demise. Baron appeared as a recurring character in both Coronation Street and EastEnders, and played three different characters in Doctor Who across three Doctors.Dora Bryan turns up as Mrs Golding, one of two clairvoyants in the film. You may know her from 50 episodes of Last of the Summer Wine, Boon (drink), or as Helen in A Taste of Honey (written by Jon's mum's mate Shelagh Delaney). She (Dora, not Shelagh) also appeared in both a Carry On and a St Trinian's.Lastly, Norman Bird pops up as the Police Inspector. If he looks familiar, it's because he had over 200 TV and 60 film roles. He was in Spywatch (as Mr Jenkins), Boon (drink), Woof!, Whack-O!, and Help! (with Stephen Mangan). He also did a stint in Jim Davidson's Up the Elephant and Round the Castle—only mentioned because Ross was convinced it was alongside Marina Sirtis, but IMDb says she was in just one episode?Anyway, back to Norman Bird. He appeared in The Adventure Game, Whistle Down the Wind, Steptoe and Son, Fawlty Towers, Please Sir!, and The Medusa Touch (on our long list since day one). He was Mr Braithwaite, the farmer, in Worzel Gummidge and voiced Bilbo in the 1978 Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings. Welcome back to our “Beasts” Double Bill! Last time, we watched "The Dummy" from the infamous anthology series by General Witchfinders hero Nigel Kneale. We now leave the smashed-up movie set of "The Dummy" with its snarling Y-fronts-wearing jilted actor and join Angie and Roger Truscott in their secluded Hampshire home for "During Barty's Party." This episode features the only actual 'beasts' as the main threat: in this case, large, super-evolved, intelligent rats. Elizabeth Sellars plays Angie Truscott, known for "The Mummy's Shroud," and Anthony Bate plays Roger Truscott, heavily channeling Michael Bryant's Peter Brock character from "The Stone Tape." Bate was cast as Doctor Fendehman in "Image of the Fendahl" but dropped out, with Denis Lill taking the role. Colin Bell plays Barty Wills, the local DJ hosting the titular "Barty's Party," his regular rock and roll radio show. Like the rest of the cast, Bell is only heard, not seen. He is seen, however, in "The Sea Devils" and "Invasion of the Dinosaurs," both Jon Pertwee stories. Norman Mitchell plays the Police Sergeant. Supposedly, at 18, Mitchell walked from Sheffield to London to become an actor, leading to nearly 200 film appearances, 500 radio broadcasts, and an estimated 2,000 television appearances. He developed a niche of playing policemen, appearing as such in 12 episodes of "Worzel Gummidge," "Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell" (more on this very soon), "And Now the Screaming Starts!", "Oliver!" and the first Doctor Who Christmas episode, "The Feast of Steven." John Rhys-Davies plays Peter Newell. Famous for his parts in Lord of the Rings and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Rhys-Daviesis a supporter of the British Conservative Party, Rhys-Davies was a radical leftist in the '60s, who tried to heckle a young Tory MP. But the parliamentarian "shot down the first two hecklers in such brilliant fashion that I decided I ought for once to shut up and listen". The MP was Margaret Thatcher. He is a supporter of Brexit. On 25 April 2019, he appeared as a panellist on the BBC's Question Time. His conduct on the programme towards politician Caroline Lucas was later described as "thuggish and sexist" by some viewers. In a world where readiness for unexpected challenges is crucial, how can leaders foster resilience, inclusivity, and creativity within their teams? This episode explores the importance of putting people first, embracing diversity in the creative sector, and leveraging collaboration during difficult times. You'll also discover insights on finding growth opportunities amid disaster, managing mental health as a leader, and practical lessons on being resilient and flexible in tumultuous times. James Burstall is CEO of Argonon, one of the UK's top international independent production groups. The group is headquartered in London with hubs in New York, Los Angeles, Oklahoma, Liverpool and Glasgow. The group produces shows ranging from The Masked Singer through to iconic current affairs program Dispatches, critically-acclaimed BBC One series Attenborough and the Mammoth Graveyard to much-loved BBC drama Worzel Gummidge. His book The Flexible Method – Prepare to Prosper In The Next Global Crisis offers a practical guide to preparing for a crisis, with unique insights from leaders across the board – including media, health, hospitality, travel and non-profit. James has worked as an executive producer and producer-director for broadcasters all over the world. Prior to his television career, he was a journalist, working as a writer and editor in Paris, London and New York for Vanity Fair, Condé Nast Traveler, HG, Vogue, The Daily Mail and The Evening Standard.   If you enjoy the show, please rate it on Spotify or iTunes. Your ratings help more people like you discover the podcast!   Episode Highlights How James' background as a journalist shaped his values and decision-making as a leader. Making tough decisions that aligned with personal principles even when they conflicted with his organization's. Promoting diversity not just internally but also in how Argonon's business is run. Why promoting diversity matters to James Making the decision to prioritize the health and morale of employees over commercial interests. How managers can insulate employees from common stressors in the creative sector How Argonon orchestrated the transition of a global workforce from in-office to remote in 48 hours. How creating “cobra teams” helped Argonon navigate the early days of the pandemic Embodying kindness as a CEO Striking a balance between being vulnerable and oversharing with employees Tapping into personal support networks during times of crisis How the pandemic has shaped and transformed James' leadership style   James' view on the greatest unmet wellbeing need at work today "Mental health is probably the biggest concern. I think that stress and mental well being is now more acute than ever. And I'm pleased that for example, Prince Harry has talked about mental health among young men. I think that's a really healthy move in the right direction. Because the truth is that it's completely normal and human sometimes not to feel great, or even to get depressed. It happens to us. It's not nice, but it does happen. There are many tools available, and we made those tools available to all our people. We need to make sure that we are listening to our people, that people have a proper recourse, whether it's through HR or through their managers to speak about what they're really feeling. And if they're struggling, we want people to tell us about it, because then we can do something about it together."   What “working with humans” means to James “I loved it when you approached me to have this conversation. Because working with humans is exactly what we do. And that's who we are as an organization. We are all about people. We're all about talent. Argonon wouldn't exist without our people. We don't have loads of machinery…What we have is amazingly creative individuals. And it's when those individuals come together, they create magic. And we create amazing programs, whether it's drama with documentary or reality or entertainment. We've won more than 125 international awards. We entertain millions of people all over the world. And how has that happened? It was because of people coming together in a very supportive, inclusive environment. And when you do that, they create incredible work.”   ©Michael Glazer

First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on February 19th 2023 This week we welcome back PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI himself, from THE SHY LIFE PODCAST and we're going to talk about, in a magic roundabout sort of a way, our various memories of, or reactions to, the children's television that we used to watch when we were growing up. This idea was mostly prompted by two things really; First there was the range of single episodes dating from what many people consider to be a “Golden Age” of children's television that were put out on BBC4 last year as part of the BBC's Centenary celebrations, which gave modern viewers a rare chance to see the likes of THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT, VISION ON, and RENTAGHOST on their televisions for the first time in what seems like an absolute age. Not that our conversation is exclusively restricted to the BBC's output however, because the other prompt for us to have this conversation was the imminent release of the rediscovered masters of Southern Television's classic series WORZEL GUMMIDGE which featured JON PERTWEE, UNA STUBBS and GEOFFREY BAYLDON, which has now been lovingly remastered for a brand new high-definition Blu-Ray set. So, over the course of this hour we mention that, alongside shows like BLUE PETER and the various SATURDAY MORNING options that we were given to view back in the day, and talk about the sort of television that most appealed to us when we were both knee-high to various grasshoppers and hadn't yet graduated to full control rights for the household remote control box. It's a bit of an amiable ramble down memory lane, really, so don't expect any massive insights, or production details, or anything like that, but I do hope you enjoy travelling along those pathways with us. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Episode 8 of the second series of The Old Songs Podcast, supported, so very kindly, by the English Folk Dance and Song Society, is an unusual one as it focuses on an old tune rather than an old song. Prepare yourself to delve into the background of one of the most well-known Morris dancing tunes, 'Princess Royal'. Joining Jon Wilks to discuss the tune is one of the country's finest melodeon players, John Spiers, or "Squeezy" as he's fondly known as on the English folk scene. Many of you will know Squeezy as a founding member of Bellowhead, not to mention a myriad of other bands he steps in and out of when the road calls. Over the course of an hour or so, the pair look at the history of 'Princess Royal' tune. Did it start life as an accompaniment to English Morris dancing, or does it stretch further back and over greater distances than that? Squeezy tells us a bit about growing up, somewhat hesitantly, in the Morris tradition, and talks about the difference between being a musician performing this tune on stage and a musician playing for a Morris side. He explains what a jig is, what a reel might be, how to recognise a slow, and who's wearing the trunkles in this relationship? Squeezy mentions video clips and different versions throughout, which we have listed and embedded below. On the other, a World Cup semi-final. The latter doesn't kick off until we're 30 minutes into this episode, but at what point do our heroes break and succumb to the boot-on-ball surrender? And will Al have to watch all of this on a black-and-white portable with a coat hanger for an ariel, or will his Dad slink off to the pub and let him watch it downstairs?Musicwise, it's a game of two halves, with two landmark events occurring and a blizzard of Huge Eighties Things being introduced to us for the first time ever. Imagination are at the top of their flouncy, slinky game. Bruno's Dad lamps someone for ripping a speaker off his cab. Jeffrey Daniel reprises the Starman Moment of the Eighties and makes the Weetabix throw their Doc Martens in a skip. AC/DC get their cannons muffled. But just when you think this could be greatest TOTP episode ever, Jonathan King crashes in like Toni Schumacher on Patrick Battiston in order to curl off another dollop of rubbish American rammel (although he introduces the UK to Mr T. And Deeleyboppers). But then! Out of nowhere come the Good Germans – Trio – who produce one of the greatest TOTP performances ever, followed by Odyssey slamming home one of the greatest singles ever, and all is well. But oh dear, that ‘3' button is about to take a hammering as Bananarama pitch up in big nappies, Bucks Fizz take time out from bombing the Ruhr to cheat on each other, Captain Sensible ducks out of the pub to pretend to be the bastard son Worzel Gummidge and Toyah, and some magicians do their underwhelming pieces to the Steve Miller Band. Everything astoundingly life-affirmingly right and groin-punchingly wrong about early-Eighties TOTP is here, and it gets picked over in the usual manner.Rock Expert David Stubbs and Neil Kulkarni join Al Needham for a dance on the car roof of 1982, veering off on such tangents as being nestled against Mr C's packet, the Line-dancing community of Birmingham, being at a loss about what to say to Jimi Hendrix, wondering what ‘Eagle Farm Today' actually means, and Top Of The Pops getting Bobby Gee to fight some swans in a cage in a desperate attempt to keep watching BBC1. The Stone Tape was broadcast on BBC Two as a Christmas ghost story in 1972. It was written by Nigel Kneale, best known as the writer of Quatermass, for whose juxtaposition of science and superstition is a frequent theme.Peter Brock played by Michael Bryant is the petulant head of a research team for Ryan Electrics. His team is developing a new recording medium that will give the company an edge over its Japanese competitors. They move into an old Victorian mansion that has been renovated for their use. On arrival, they learn that the refurbishment of one of the rooms remains incomplete, the builders having refused to work in it because it is supposedly haunted. The room, with its stone walls, is a remnant of the original building, with foundations dating back to the Saxon era. After the team witness the haunting in particular by Jill Greeley, an emotionally sensitive computer programmer played by Jane Asher, Brock hypotheses that it is not a ghost, but that somehow the stone in the room has preserved an image of a girl's death—this "stone tape" may be the new recording medium they have been seeking.Realising that the phenomenon occurring in the room is far older than the house, Jill theorises that the stone tape can be recorded over again and again, like magnetic recording tape; Jill realises that the girl's death they are hearing is masking a much older recording, left many thousands of years ago.Returning to the room one last time, Jill's senses are besieged by a powerful, malevolent presence from the much-degraded older recording.Critically acclaimed at time of broadcast, it remains well regarded to this day as one of Nigel Kneale's best and most terrifying plays. Since its broadcast, the hypothesis of residual haunting – that ghosts are recordings of past events made by the natural environment – has come to be known as the "Stone Tape Theory".Something HorrificWhat Happens Now by Jeremy Dysonhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2097964.What_Happens_NowApparition Phase by Will Macleanhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/50498731-the-apparition-phaseThe Children of the Stoneshttps://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p08sy4cdOther links:The Stone Tape (new audio version)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAa7C30DmUsGhost Adventureshttps://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6sbzzrSpecial Mention:Worzel Gummidgehttps://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000cskwWilliam Meikle Stone Tape Blog @williemeiklehttps://williammeikleblog.wordpress.com/2019/11/14/revisiting-my-influences-the-stone-tape/$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff. Are You Being Served? is one of those great series and I wanted to have at least one episode that featured it. I interview Mike Berry, who played Mr. Spooner. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a more in depth interview with him as we talk about all things from his early career starting out as a musician in the 1960s, modeling, Worzel Gummidge and of course Are You Being Served? I think it is a real fascinating look at the music business in the 1960s with how hits were made and hits were not made. He talks about knowing The Beatles and The Rolling Stones during those early days too. 2021 is the 100th anniversary of Frank Thornton’s birth. I had the great opportunity to interview Frank’s daughter, Jane. Jane has been working with her son to catalogue and preserve Frank’s scrapbooks, notes and general archive he had kept from the time of his very first acting job until much later. You will hear some of the private comments he has written over the years about different things and it is really fun to see how Frank loved to use words. This is a very unique perspective on a much loved actor.

Mackenzie Crook talks about Saucy Nancy, the latest episode in his festive revivals of the children’s TV series Worzel Gummidge, which originally aired in the late 1970s. Saucy Nancy sees the children visit a scrapyard, where they meet Worzel's old friend Saucy Nancy. She's a carved ship’s figurehead, and wants their help to get back to the sea. As tensions run high in houses all over the country where people are cooped up over the Christmas period, writer and board gamer Natasha Hodgson reveals the world of cooperative board games: games where the players work together towards a goal, rather than trying to crush or bankrupt your dear mum. With many titles and styles to choose from, are the days of shouting over the Monopoly board over? In May, comedian Janey Godley was one of the Scottish actors and writers who took part in the National Theatre of Scotland’s project Scenes for Survival. Janey’s video short featured her as a character called Betty whose difficult relationship with her husband came to a head under Lockdown. It was one of the most viewed in the series and led to a follow-up. Now for Christmas and New Year, Janey revisits Betty. As festive party season is well and truly cancelled this year, Front Row is celebrating the best parties in culture. Today it’s Vice’s Zing Tsjeng on Euphoria and the dark side of teen parties. In episode 100 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on the past, present and future of photography. Plus this week Grant revisits a conversation he had in 2012 with legendary photographer and filmmaker Wolfgang 'Wolf' Susitsky at his Little Venice, London apartment when Susitsky was 100 years of age. Vienna born Wolfgang 'Wolf' Suschitzky, was a documentary photographer, as well and cinematographer perhaps best known for his collaboration with Paul Rotha in the 1940s and his work on the, classic 1971 film Get Carter. His sister was the photographer and spy Edith Tudor-Hart. Suschitzky's first love was zoology, but he realised he could not make a living in Austria as a zoologist, he studied photography at the School of Design and Graphic Arts in Vienna. The political climate in Austria was changing and being a Socialist and of Jewish origin, Suschitzky left for London in 1934 where his sister had already moved. Suschitzky married a Dutch woman, and they moved to the Netherlands where he photographed postcards for newsagents. His wife left him a year later, which he said was great luck because if he had stayed there, he wouldn't have survived the Nazi occupation. He returned to England in 1935, and began working as a film cameraman for Rotha, with whom he had a long working relationship. In 1940 he held his first exhibition – of animal pictures – in London and published his first book, the “how to” guide Photographing Children, which was followed by Photographing Animals a year later. Suschitzky became increasingly interested in themes prompted by Edward Steichen's The Family of Man exhibition in 1955, and set out to explore how “people are different the world over, and everywhere the same”. His work for Geographical magazine extended into series on the daily lives of people in Burma, Thailand, Yemen, Ethiopia and India. Photography Year Books printed annually in the 1950s and 60s frequently included his images and The World Exhibition of Photography included his work in What Is Man? (1964) and Woman (1968). By the 1980s, Suschitzky was also working in television commercials and was the cinematographer for the children's series Worzel Gummidge (1980-81). In the same decade he began to receive somewhat belated recognition for his photography, in the Art in Exile exhibition in the UK and exhibitions at the Photographers' Gallery, the Camden Arts Centre and Zelda Cheatle Gallery. More recent publications include the retrospective Wolf Suschitzky Photos (2006), and Wolf Suschitzky Films (2010). Seven Decades of Photography appeared in 2014, the same year he was granted an honorary doctorate at the University of Brighton.Suschitzky's photography enjoyed a renaissance this century, with his inclusion in a number of group shows, not least Another London: International Photographers Capture City Life 1930-80 at Tate Britain in 2012. Suschitzky died in October 2016 at the age of 104 in London. The fifth episode of the podcast which asks: why is Richard Stilgoe going on about acne? This episode finds Top Of The Pops smack in the middle of the Eighventies in a state of flux, after being off air for nine weeks due to a Musicians Union strike. The Kids are sat on the floor, the set is even more sparse than usual, and they're experimenting with guest co-hosts - a process which would start with Elton John and end with, er, Russ Abbot. This week, it's Tommy Vance and Roger Daltrey - The McVicar Himself - who takes crumpet-leering to heights that not even DLT would think possible, moans about The Clash not being on (when everyone else knows they don't do TOTP), and casts that aspersion upon the Village People. Musicwise, we carom from Ultravox awkwardly dancing behind synths to Legs & Co channelling the spirit of the International Day episode of Peppa Pig to the Dad in Worzel Gummidge performing an old song which isn't a patch on I Got Those Can't Get Enough Of Those Blue Riband Blues to Grace Jones with a fag on to David Bowie's dead expensive new video to Abba putting a right downer on everything at the end with their adult relationship break-up palaver. And the drummer of Slade sits there with a shaker for no real reason at all. Al Needham is joined by Taylor Parkes and David Stubbs for a through evisceration of 1980, veering off to talk about how Roger Daltrey put them off meat for life, what it's like to stop the night at Benny Out Of Abba's hotel, and how being dressed as a Pierrot on an orange beach and reacting to having your picture taken by a paparazzo as if you've been shot is a bit rubbish, really. And loads of swearing. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week Kyle and Matthew talk about the '90s cultural force that swept the UK: Britpop! In their journey, they are joined by Meltdown’s resident British person Jake Robinson and the lovely Ben Morse to discuss what constitutes a proper Britpop song. Jake explains his two camps of Britpop: "Swaggery" bands and "Cheeky Fun" bands. They have a nice retrospective on the Blur/Oasis war. They also break down the less talked about Verve vs. Verve Pipe war that was waged here in the United States. They talk about the origins of Britpop, the subgenres and offshoots. Kyle and Jake recommend the BBC documentary “Seven Ages of Rock” as an excellent primer for rock music from an English perspective. They also debate who does a better version of the song “Common People”: Pulp or William Shatner. The gang also chats about the lasting effects of Britpop on both sides of the pond and Natalie learns the horrible truth about Engelbert Humperdinck.
