This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 63rd New York Film Festival with Father Mother Sister Brother director Jim Jarmusch and cast members Adam Driver, Indya Moore, Luka Sabbat, Vicky Krieps, and Tom Waits. This conversation was moderated by NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim. The NYFF63 Centerpiece selection, Father Mother Sister Brother will open at Film at Lincoln Center on December 24. Get tickets at filmlinc.org/jarmusch For years, Jim Jarmusch has written, directed, and produced delicate, character-driven films. Winner of the Venice Film Festival Golden Lion, Father Mother Sister Brother is a perceptive study in familial dynamics, a feature film carefully constructed in the form of a triptych. The three chapters all concern the relationships between adult children reconnecting or coming to terms with aging or lost parents, which take place in the present, and each in a different country. Siblings Jeff and Emily (played by Adam Driver and Mayim Bialik) check up on their hermetic father (played by Tom Waits) in rural New Jersey; sisters Lilith and Timothea (Vicky Krieps and Cate Blanchett) reunite with their guarded novelist mother (Charlotte Rampling) in Dublin; and twins Skye and Billy (Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat) return to their Paris apartment to address a family tragedy. Father Mother Sister Brother is a kind of anti-action film, its subtle and quiet style carefully constructed to allow small details to accumulate—almost like flowers being carefully placed in three delicate arrangements. The 63rd New York Film Festival is presented in partnership with Rolex.

Director Richard Linklater has paid tribute to the groundbreaking moment in French cinema when jump cuts, cigarette smoke and rebellious youth were rendered in beautiful black and white celluloid. Manon Kerjean tells us why "Nouvelle Vague", his affectionate tribute to French film history, is a treat for cinephiles. We also discuss the social drama "Météors", which takes viewers deep into rural France for a bromance that deals with coming-of-age struggles with humour. Meanwhile, Arnaud Desplechin returns with a cerebral, emotionally dense story of music and mystery, as François Civil and Charlotte Rampling star in "Two Pianos". Plus we check out a charming animated rendition of the life of French literary giant Marcel Pagnol, whose southern stories have delighted generations of schoolchildren.

Directed by the late, great Sidney Lumet (12 Angry Men, Serpico, Network) and in honor of his 100th Birthday (!), this courtroom drama stars the legendary Paul Newman as a semi-alcoholic Boston attorney taking on what might be his most challenging case yet! The family of a pregnant woman - recently sent into a permanent coma in the care of a Catholic-run hospital possibly resulting from the negligence of staff on site caring for her - is now suing said hospital for damages and what results is the textbook definition of a David Vs. Goliath case with Frank on one side and the local Catholic Arch-diocese on the other. Gratefully in Frank's corner is a top legal whiz played by Jack Warden....though leading the defendants is an extremely savvy lawyer played by the late, great James Mason. :o There are legends aplenty in front of and behind the camera of this highly acclaimed legal thriller which was nominated for five Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor! We are putting both Dune Parts I and II on trial this week. Will we get our just deserts, or does it leave us high and dry? Alex and Ausy say this is the definitive adaptation of the book, unlikely to be surpassed with such attention to detail in every aspect of production. Dave argues that too much detail causes a sluggish pace, the film thoroughly exploring every part of the book for a collective runtime of over five hours. All this with an awful attempt at a Charlotte Rampling impression, a much better try at Stellan Skarsgård and a spicy film quiz. www.filmsontrial.co.uk/252

Frank Herbert's original 1965 story, DUNE, was an astounding success. It has become one of America's great novels, and is beloved by science fiction fans. Most certainly apt to fit in with the space opera subset of speculative fiction, the book has been once again recently turned into a two part film series starting with director Denis Villeneuve's first in the pair DUNE: PART ONE (2021). Now he's back with the second, DUNE: PART TWO, that has been one of 2024's biggest successes. Rather than discuss the intricacies of the story, the movie stars an all-star cast. Timothee Chalamet plays the lead role of Paul Atreides who may or may not be a promised messianic hero. Also in the cast is Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, Javier Bardem, Christopher Walken, Florence Pugh, among many others.DUNE: PART TWO (2024) received glowing reviews from critics. With its theatrical success, Warner Brothers appears to have green lit the second book in Frank Herbert's series DUNE: MESSIAH. Dark Discussions takes a look at this new film and gives their thoughts.

The film stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, and Souheila Yacoub.
