Is escaping from Hammerland a good idea? A darkly comic satire about an increasingly deranged leader of a Western power, tensions with Russia and the threat of World War 3 breaking out – sound familiar? That's the premise of Whoops Apocalypse, the 1986 feature film very loosely based on the sitcom of the same name, created by David Renwick and Andrew Marshall. Sadly where the film fails to imitate real life is the presence of a female President in the White House and she's the (relatively) sane one, while her British counterpart (played by Peter Cook) believes unemployment is caused by pixies and is quite happy to encourage those without jobs to leap to their deaths off Beachy Head. The film also features Loretta Swit (M*A*S*H), Richard Wilson, Michael Richards (pre-Seinfeld), Rik Mayall, Alexei Sayle, Ian Richardson, Herbert Lom and John Sessions. Last December for Goon Pod Film Club Tyler spoke to Renwick & Marshall at length about Whoops Apocalypse and how it all came about and he decided to share it with the general Goon Pod listeners as a bonus episode before world events rendered its plot totally tame and entirely plausible. Andrew and David talked warmly about the film and revealed how it was chiefly the lousy scheduling of their earlier television show End Of Part One which compelled them to write the Whoops Apocalypse sitcom, which in turn led to producer Brian Eastman proposing a big-screen repurposing, involving a new storyline and characters. They discussed the writing process, the challenges of casting, the difference between what made critics laugh and audiences laugh and things they wish had worked a little bit better. Goon Pod returns in late March. Goon Pod Film Club can be found here: patreon.com/GoonPod and you can sign up free for a seven day trial. Welcome to the At The Flicks archive. This one is a real blast from the past!  Recently Graham was rummaging around in the At The Flicks vault and fell over some old recording cans that had been left on the floor.  Luckily Graham had been drinking that day, or he might have swerved passed them by and this show would still be sitting there! After swearing and moaning about his now sore leg, Graham checked the cans and realised it was an unreleased edition of our very popular Rediscovering the classic with Elijah series.  It is our discussion about the classic historical epic El Cid (1961). Apart from Jeff and Graham, the team for this episode comprised, of course Elijah, and a voice we miss on the show.  Neil. For those of you not familiar with the film, it stars Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren and is a bio pic about legendary Spanish hero Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (aka El Cid), a knight who lived in the 11th Century.  Normally it is Elijah who is discovering the film for the first time.  Not here, this time it's Jeff and Graham who are seeing it with fresh eyes for the first time (although both have seen it before – don't worry it's all explained in the show). Other things discussed in this podcast: - Why the main stars didn't like each other - What film director Anthony Mann got fired from just before this (and also Jeff initially getting his facts wrong) - Miklos Rozsa's score and the use of trumpets - Herbert Lom not being politically correct  - Correlation to Dune It's fascinating to hear the old team back together again.  Who knows, there may be more life in rediscovering the classics to come. Until then bye for now and see you At The Flicks.

This month I've had the pleasure of speaking to two of the finest comedy writers of the last fifty years – Andrew Marshall and David Renwick – specifically about their 1986 film Whoops Apocalypse, which borrowed the title, a few plot elements and a handful of cast members from their 1982 one-series sitcom of the same name. The film was inspired by the events surrounding the Falklands War and the ongoing tensions between East and West and starred Peter Cook as increasingly deranged British premier Sir Mortimer Chris, Loretta Swit as US President Adams (no relation), Michael Richards (pre-Seinfeld) as international terrorist Lacrobat and a whole host of familiar faces such as Richard Wilson, Rik Mayall, Alexei Sayle, Ian Richardson, Herbert Lom and John Sessions.

“Then I submit, Inspector Ballon, that you arrived home, found Miguel with Maria Gambrelli and killed him in a rit of fealous jage!” The Pink Panther received its world premiere in Italy in December 1963 and was officially released in the US in March 1964. Despite David Niven topping the bill, the character of Inspector Jacques Clouseau - played by Peter Sellers - stole the film. Just three months later, in June 1964, Inspector Clouseau returned and this time in the lead. A Shot In The Dark was brought forward for a summer release, to capitalise on the success of The Pink Panther. It would be released in the UK in January 1965. A Shot In The Dark was adapted for the screen from an original French play and changed almost beyond recognition, thanks to the combined talents of Blake Edwards and William Peter Blatty (who would later go on to pen The Exorcist). Maria Gambrelli, a maid employed in the service of the millionaire Benjamin Ballon, is accused of murdering chauffeur Miguel Ostos. Clouseau is assigned to the case and almost immediately is smitten by Maria. A series of subsequent murders occur and even Clouseau himself becomes a target. What we get is an almost perfect comedy film, with Sellers at the peak of his powers - just months away from his series of heart attacks in Hollywood - and crisp, tight direction by Edwards. The film also marks the first appearances of Herbert Lom as Clouseau's long-suffering boss, Commissioner Dreyfus, André Maranne as Dreyfus's assistant François and Burt Kwouk as Clouseau's devoted manservant Cato. So, as it is the 60th anniversary of ASITD's release what better excuse than to talk about it at length for Goon Pod? It's your host's favourite Peter Sellers film of all time and he spends what seems like the show's entirety giggling and chuckling so it falls on this week's guest - newly published novelist Adam Leslie - to inject a bit of professionalism to proceedings! "Mrs Wilberforce..? I understand you have rooms to let." And so we are introduced to the sinister and mysterious Professor Marcus, performed with brio by Alec Guinness as a sort of unhinged Alastair Sim grotesque, in Alexander McKendrick's sublime 1955 Ealing comedy The Ladykillers. The film – described by McKendrick as a film about Britain in subsidence - was the first major film role for Peter Sellers, after a string of low budget and mostly forgettable little comedies. Although his role as the aging Ted and spiv Harry Robinson is very much a supporting one, it did get him noticed, and his subsequent career in films grew steadily with a BAFTA for Best Actor five years later and international super-stardom in less than a decade. Alongside Guinness and Sellers are the splendidly menacing Herbert Lom as Louis Harvey, Cecil Parker as Major Courtney and Danny Green as 'One Round', posing as members of a string quintet who have robbery on their minds. Playing the role of her lifetime as the titular 'lady' is Katie Johnson in her penultimate film as Mrs Wilberforce, a performance which won her a BAFTA. Joining Tyler to talk about the film is Graeme Lindsay-Foot, for whom this film remains one of his all-time favourites after having first seen it as a teenager. Together they break down the film from its earliest beginnings, as fragments of a dream occurring to the writer William Rose, to the production process. casting, plot and - yes- there WILL be spoilers. Fans of Frankie Howerd are duly warned that he comes in for a bit of flack. We answer these questions: WHY did Herbert Lom wear a hat throughout the film? WHO was the inspiration for the look of Professor Marcus? WHAT bits of the film were cut out, causing Sellers much annoyance? HOW did Sellers commemorate the film in the form of a gift for cast and crew? WHERE was Mrs Wilberforce's lopsided old house actually situated in London? ... And much more!

The Mark of Caine

It's 1966, Michael Caine is storming Hollywood like a cockney Viking off the back of his Oscar nomination for Alfie and has actually been hand-picked for this role by Shirley McClaine.Caine plays a cat burglar who discovers that best laid plans can often go awry. So no real life parallels for him then. McClaine plays the Eurasian exotic dancer who helps him and Herbert Lom plays an Arab. Yup, it's the sixties alright.Farce, romp, caper - call it what you will, the studio called it Gambit and you'll have to listen to this podcast to find out what we'd call it.  Get bonus content on Patreon Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Great European Lives with Charlie Connelly

In this episode, host Charlie Connelly delves into the life of Czech–born British actor Herbert Lom. He was most identified for his performance as Charles Dreyfus in the Pink Panther series, an endearing character that was a welcome change from sinister accusations Lom constantly received as a Czech residing in Britain during the Second World War. He knew what it was to be an outsider, working hard to stand out in the industry and snatch a place at the heart of British society after gaining citizenship. Still, away from the stage and studio, he remained perpetually in transit between the Czech and British identity. Enjoyed this episode? Let us know by tweeting @TheNewEuropean.

Trail of the Pink Panther is a film done nearly two years after the death of Pink Panther franchise star Peter Sellers, compiling the best clips and unused outtakes from prior films, along with new material to hang together a plot around the. That plot involves the theft of the infamous and priceless Pink Panther diamond from the fictional country of Lugash, and Chief Inspector Clouseau, at the request of the president of Lugash, is brought in yet again to investigate its whereabouts, against the wishes of Commissioner Dreyfus. In the course of the globe-hopping investigation, a plane carrying Clouseau goes down into the ocean, where it is presumed he might have finally met his fate. A television reporter is called forth to talk to those who knew Clouseau well, from co-workers to those he helped put away, as well as those who knew of his activities prior to joining the police, from his childhood upbringing to becoming a resistance fighter for France in World War II. Herbert Lom, Joanna Lumley, David Niven, and Robert Loggia also appear. Blake Edwards directs.

But, because Mark has been so busy, he and I haven't had the chance to record a show together all year - until now! HELL DRIVERS (1957) was a film I was totally unaware of before Mr. Maddox started talking about it a few months ago. I don't know how I missed it considering the talented people involved. There is a host of future British television and film stars packed into this tight little drama including a Doctor Who, a James Bond and at least two other soon-to-be small screen espionage agents. Oh! And the great Herbert Lom as an Italian expatriate working in England and romancing the lovely Peggy Cummins. Writer/director Cy Endfield shows his skill at crafting a strong script with believable characters but also knows how to stage exciting action scenes. We watch huge trucks barreling down roads that are clearly too small for that type of traffic while at the same time the complicated personal relationships become more deadly as well. But the film offers more than just bar fights and lustful quandaries. Just why would a company run these young drivers so hard? As is the norm for a conversation between Mark and I, there comes a point where we go off track. In fact we went so far off track that it became difficult to know just how long we had been roaming around talking about something other than HELL DRIVERS! We drift into a discussion of toys including fan-made collectables, then move on to the British 'Carry On' film series and film humor in general with a surprising revelation or two from Mark. There are at least a dozen other topics that we charge right into with little reasonable concern for the fact that you folks might eventually be listening to us ramble. Sorry about that. If you have any comments or if you'd like to correct either of us please write the show at thebloodypit@gmail.com where we'll be thrilled to answer all questions. Thank you for listening and we'll talk to you again soon.

Count Dracula (1970). Welcome back to another episode of Chronicle Podcast (An Almanac of Old World Horrors), this is season 1 episode 4. This is a podcast dedicated to discussing European Horror Cinema only and is the brainchild of podcaster Duncan McLeish (The Podcast Under the Stairs). Each season will run for 6 episodes and drop every two weeks with season 1 looking exclusively at European Horror Cinema through its Vampires. With an emphasis on giving you an insight into some of the weird and wonderful stories behind the movies, we continues our journey with Count Dracula (1970). A movie billed as one of the most faithful adaptations to the Stoker source material from one of Europe’s most sleazy exploitation directors? Throw into the mix Christopher Lee as the Count in one of the few occasions he dawned the cloak and fangs outside Hammer Horror Studios, Klaus Kinski as Renfield & Herbert Lom as Van Helsing…have I got your attention yet? Chronicle Podcast was researched, written, recorded and produced by me for you!! Join me next time to look at The Reflecting Skin (1990). Thanks to Von Hertzog for the Chronicle Podcast theme song and check out his work [...] The post Chronicle – Episode Four: Count Dracula appeared first on Legion.

We're on a roll with Stephen King films after our CHRISTINE episode, so the Damn Dirty Geeks make a U-turn back into Uncle Ira's Basement for this mini-podcast about David Cronenberg's film adaptation of Stephen King's THE DEAD ZONE.   In this episode, Frank, Trish and Scott focus their psychic skills on Christopher Walken's memorable performance in this tense Cronenberg thriller which arguably is the best feature adaptation of a King novel yet.   One of King's best novels in its own right, this suspenseful tale of lost love and a terrible gift to see future events forces Johnny Smith to choose between his own destruction or the world's apocalyptic catastrophe.   Brought alive on the screen by a talented supporting cast including Herbert Lom, Brooke Adams, Tom Skerrit and Martin Sheen, the DDG argue that THE DEAD ZONE remains a riveting highlight in Walken's career and another uniquely chilling triumph in Cronenberg's career. Listen along to flash back to this gripping film and remember how King and Cronenberg reached out to chill your blood in 1983.

Alec Guinness's Professor Marcus really meets his match with Katie Johnson's Mrs. Wilberforce in Alexander Mackendrick's 1955 Ealing Studios comedy "The Ladykillers," what some call the last great comedy from the studio. Where he plots and schemes to rob a bank truck, she makes tea and makes sure her guests act like gentlemen -- even when those men are thieves. It's a great premise for this film, and one that makes at least half of us on the show laugh. Join us -- Pete Wright and Andy Nelson -- as we continue our Sir Alec Guinness series with "The Ladykillers." We talk about why it worked so well for Andy and why it didn't for Pete, looking at everything from the characters to the situations to the overall story. We chat about the performances from the actors playing the five criminals -- Guinness, Peter Sellers, Herbert Lom, Cecil Parker and Danny Green -- as well as the very well mannered Mrs. Wilberforce played by the brilliant Johnson. We discuss the look of the film and the cinematography by Otto Heller, the great score by Tristram Cary and the Oscar-nominated writing by William Rose. We touch on the Coen remake and Tom Hanks playing the Guinness role. And we chat about how great Guinness really is in this film and how we're thrilled to be doing a series on him right now. So check it out -- let us know what you think about the movie. Love it? Hate it? We want to know!
