First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on February 19th 2023 This week we welcome back PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI himself, from THE SHY LIFE PODCAST and we're going to talk about, in a magic roundabout sort of a way, our various memories of, or reactions to, the children's television that we used to watch when we were growing up. This idea was mostly prompted by two things really; First there was the range of single episodes dating from what many people consider to be a “Golden Age” of children's television that were put out on BBC4 last year as part of the BBC's Centenary celebrations, which gave modern viewers a rare chance to see the likes of THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT, VISION ON, and RENTAGHOST on their televisions for the first time in what seems like an absolute age. Not that our conversation is exclusively restricted to the BBC's output however, because the other prompt for us to have this conversation was the imminent release of the rediscovered masters of Southern Television's classic series WORZEL GUMMIDGE which featured JON PERTWEE, UNA STUBBS and GEOFFREY BAYLDON, which has now been lovingly remastered for a brand new high-definition Blu-Ray set. So, over the course of this hour we mention that, alongside shows like BLUE PETER and the various SATURDAY MORNING options that we were given to view back in the day, and talk about the sort of television that most appealed to us when we were both knee-high to various grasshoppers and hadn't yet graduated to full control rights for the household remote control box. It's a bit of an amiable ramble down memory lane, really, so don't expect any massive insights, or production details, or anything like that, but I do hope you enjoy travelling along those pathways with us. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Below is a transcript of the podcast. Hello there, and welcome to A Brit talks Vintage TV, with me Jamie Dyer. Today... feels like a parsley day. I'd love to say that I'm not talking about the Herb, but I am...sorta. Actually, I'm referring to The Herbs, a British stop motion animated series narrated by Gordon Rollings The show, featuring Parsley the lion, Dil the dog, Constable Knapweed et al, was created by Michael Bond and ran for thirteen episodes in 1968. If you've never seen it, it was this strange show that featured animals and humans in a herb garden, all named after Herbs. That's pretty much all there was to it. I shan't loiter too much on this subject because there are better places to go, but I shall make one observation. Every character in this show, which was animated by the legendary Ivor Wood (Postman Pat, The Wombles, Paddington, Bertha, Charlie Chalk), had a song attached to them. I'm sure those of a certain age can recall the memorable song of the very friendly lion called Parsley? If you do, maybe, you'll agree with me that it feels like a call from a bygone era. What you may not recall, is the song of the "fat feathery owl called Sage", with its dramatic Jaws-like strings. The delivery of these lines is said to be reminiscent of the television personality Patrick Moore. I'm not sure who he sounds like, I just know it's freaky to see as an adult; When paired with the less-than-perfect animation. I think there was always something a little surreal about The Herbs, and I think Sage's over-dramatic song proves it. The series received a spin-off in 1970, called The Adventures Of Parsley. It ran for a whopping thirty-two episodes. Broadcast just before the evening news, this show dispensed with the nostalgic songs and went all out in its attempt to compete with The Magic Roundabout. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen this show, but I can never get enough of it. Placing a dry-humoured Parsley at the centre of things, with his frantic friend Dil the dog was a stroke of genius. These episodes were five minutes long but were written like a series of sketches. Dil gets a TV, Dil takes up painting, Parsley wants to put on a show, and Dil opens his house to the public. Each episode was perfectly paced and rearranged all the elements of the Herbs to create a comedy masterclass for children and adults alike. So which of these series do I prefer? I don't think you have to ask. From its MGM-inspired opening, coming in Parsley and Dil variants, to its witty dialogue and bizarre situations; The Adventures of Parsley is a show any fan of historic children's television should check out. It's available to buy on DVD, although it's out of print so may be a bit expensive now, and also on Amazon. Anyway, as Parsley would say...Goodnight everyone. So what else is there to say? I've said enough. If you have anything to say about the shows mentioned in this podcast, you can email Jamie@OldTimeReview.co.uk, tweet @OldTimeReview on Twitter or check out the Facebook page, Old Time Review. This weeks show was masterminded by Bad Dad Sidey who would have pleased the many protective headgear enthusiasts in our audience by nominating the Top 5 Helmets for us to discuss. Will we manage to talk about this subject without a lot of puerility and giggling? I wouldn't have thought so.THE LIGHTHOUSE (2019) was director Robert Egger's sophomore effort after debut THE VVITCH polarised the horror community with its emphasis on tone and atmosphere at the expense of shocks and sees Willem Dafoe's Thomas Wake and Robert Pattinson's Ephraim Winslow as wickie's tasked with tending and caring for a lighthouse for a month on a small isolated island. Shot using a rare 1:19:1 aspect ratio using authentic Petzval and Bauch & Lomb lenses on black and white film which induces a sense of claustrophobia to go along with the anxiety created by the constant oppressive droning of the foghorn, this is in some ways a very conventional A24 movie, as it veers from tense period pscyhological drama to lovecraftian horror via fart jokes and Promethean allegories. I enjoyed this one more in retrospect than when I was actually watching it.Sidey has been a big fan of THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT since his teens so thought we should finally give this the Bad Dads treatment. The episode "Dougal's Glasses" sees the disconsolate dog moaning and generally being a bit nasty as he fears his eyes have gone for good. Does this still hold up? Absolutely not.We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Hello! This week we're looking at the circular economy, a system that could transform our lives and contribute mightily towards reducing carbon emissions. In the UK, per person we produce the second highest amount of electronic waste by throwing away our unwanted phones and laptops. In a circular economy, we reduce usage of materials, reuse them and recycle. To help us understand the circular economy we're joined by Patrick Shroeder from Chatham House, Susan Evans from the Green Alliance, and Malena Sell from Sitra, the innovation company helping Finland towards its goal of eliminating waste by 2050. Plus, Ed's got a new thermometer and Geoff's becoming a social butterfly. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Magic Roundabout with Linda Jennings in conversation with David Eastaugh  Manchester band 1986-88, releases forthcoming on Third Man Records From Dangerous Minds - The footprint left behind by Manchester's Magic Roundabout was a small one. During the band's incarnation in the later part of the 1980s, they released just one song. “She's a Waterfall (Parts 1 and 2)” was included on a 1987 fanzine cassette compilation titled Oozing Through The Ozone Layer that was put together by Mark Webber of Pulp, which also included two Pulp numbers as well as songs by Spacemen 3 and the Television Personalities. They were in good company, clearly. The Magic Roundabout was supposed to put out a flexi-disc, but that never happened and the band—who opened for the likes of The Pastels, Blue Aeroplanes, Spacemen 3, Loop, My Bloody Valentine, and Inspiral Carpets—broke up.

Anyone who has ever watched the London Marathon will remember the guy who ran it in a diving suit. Mainly because they're still covering his progress three days after the event has finished. But that guy is Lloyd Scott, and running London in a diving suit is just one in an incredible career of ridiculous challenges Lloyd has undertaken all in the name of charity. As well as jaunts to most other major marathons in his diving suit, Lloyd has also run an entire marathon underwater in Loch Ness, has run London as St George AND a dragon and Indiana Jones being chased by a boulder, Brian the Snail from The Magic Roundabout, The Beatles in their Yellow Submarine and as the Iron Giant. But he's also doing some seriously extreme expeditions to the North Pole, South Pole, cycling a penny farthing 3,000 miles across Australia and walked Land's End to John O'Groats with a life-size T-rex.Jody and David speak to Lloyd about where it all started, what his best and worst challenges are, how he comes up with the ideas and why he feels the need to challenge himself this way.Enjoy! If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.Join the conversation! Richard Coles and Nikki Bedi are joined by Graeme Garden - one third of the Goodies along with Bill Oddie and the late Tim Brooke-Taylor. In the classic BBC television show the trio played agents for hire and would do "anything, anywhere, anytime". Astride their trusty ‘Trandem’ – a three-seater bicycle – they tackled a giant kitten, parodied westerns with a Cornish version called “Bunfight at the OK Tea Rooms” and were chased by a giant Dougal from Magic Roundabout. Graeme also created I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, the long-running Radio 4 show on which he is still a panellist and, with producer Jon Naismith, devised the Unbelievable Truth on Radio 4. Jojo Moyes is a novelist and journalist. Her books include the bestsellers Me Before You, After You and Still Me and The Girl You Left Behind. Me Before You has now sold over 14 million copies worldwide and was adapted into a major film starring Sam Claflin and Emilia Clarke. JoJo’s latest novel, The Giver of Stars, is based on a mobile library service launched by Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1930s. The Pack Horse Library Project was an initiative in which female volunteers on horseback delivered paperbacks to families in rural Kentucky who did not have access to books. Giles Clark is a conservationist who is taking on the illegal wildlife trade and helping to build a pioneering new bear sanctuary in Laos, Southeast Asia. He'll be talking about rescuing sun and moon bears and the perils of having bears about the house. And Garry Crothers, who lost an arm in a motorbike accident, joins us to talk about his epic journey - a 4,000 mile solo voyage from the Caribbean to his home in Northern Ireland. Today Dead Man's Coat Day Thirty four of the Spanish Lockdown, the sometimes amusing, diary of a Brit in southern Spain under the 'Alarma' - normal life has stopped.   To find out more:  https://www.thesecretspain.com Day 34 Dead man’s coat   It is day 34 of our Spanish lockdown and the day started fractious, we bickered about something or other, so I took the three good legs cat for his walk to get some space.   We are very, very lucky in that we have more than 150 square metres of terraces and even a narrow mountain garden that separates us from our neighbours.   I have a workshop down in the pool room and Chris has his gym area up behind the garage.  It allows us to stay home but enjoy some space.  My favourite space that I also share with the cat, is our little voice studio that sits behind the house, between the mountain and the back wall.   I have spent most of the day sticking back the acoustic tiles that were removed for the electrician when we had our building work done.  Again this is not an easy process. I use contact adhesive glue to stick the tiles.. so had to source that from Amazon, but it came in about four days.   Last night I watched the YouTube channel “Doing it Ourselves” about a family who are slowly restoring the magnificent French Chateau De La Basmaignee.  They are having similar challenges and now can only do work with what they have around them, making the best use of things that are in their workshop, left over wood stain, re-purposing and cutting sand paper to fit the sander.   Weirdly it has actually made their channel even more watchable, the place is extraordinary, filled with old paintings and antiques, but also many rooms are in a stately ruin. There was a bit where they had to shovel tons of pigeon shite from the attic, celebrating by raising up their cherry picker to the top of the roof and attaching the Chateau flag to the flag pole.  It looked very dangerous, very good TV.   I find myself more and more vicariously living my life through others.  I guess being trapped inside for most of the time I am longing to get out, go to the shops, eat at a restaurant, do all the normal social things again.   We watched Foxes Afloat, two guys on a narrowboat who are having to move to get water.  The whole of the British canal system is on Lockdown and you can only move your boat for essential reasons. But their channel is, well normal, but hugely enjoyable.  Colin one of the guys on the narrowboat has a natural talent for photography and his drone shots over the rolling English countryside are spectacular.   I try very hard to make the weekends different, spending less time on the internet and getting out in the garden or, today repurposing an IKEA unit for our little studio.   We learnt today that one of our colleagues from LBC had died of Motor Neurone Disease.  I dearly loved Steve Butterick he was one of the most affable men I have ever met and more laid back than Dylan the rabbit in The Magic Roundabout.   He had a soft laughing face, just like Dylan too. Somehow he contrived to take the whole of Wimbledon off from work every year, he loved tennis and used to go and work for Radio Wimbledon the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’s own radio station.   He was also one of the most frugal men I have ever met.  We were once working together and he told me he had seen a carpet in pretty good nick in a skip outside some business or other.  He decided to return later in the evening and retrieve it.  It nearly killed him pulling out the carpet from the skip and then he had to drag it back home.. and then laid it in one of his rooms.   Another time he turned up in a very natty suit.  “Where did you buy that suit?” I asked “From a charity shop.” He replied.  Now this would have been the 1990’s before Charity Shops became cool.    I said it looked like a drug dealers’ suit.  “Funny you should say that as I think I have found a bullet hole in it.” He was joking but there was a very suspicious hole right by the breast pocket, I would imagine the work of a moth.     Motor Neurone is a foul disease, Chris’ mum died from it, her demise was quick.  It began by her having trouble swallowing food, it ended with her in a wheelchair.  Mercifully she died in hospital of a heart attack.   Death and of course taxes are inevitable we hear today that the Spanish Prime Minister does not think bars or restaurants will begin operating until the end of this year.  It all sounds a bit bleak again, but there is hope from the 26th April he will allow children out to exercise and play, if anything the children have shown us adults how to behave, they have stayed at home drawn rainbows, sent messages of love and support to the vulnerable, sung songs and embraced the virtual world that we now live in.
