Danny Baker, the act you've known for all these years, is kicking his legs up again in 2025 on a thundering new theatre tour, ‘Aye Aye! Speaking about a life of Plot Twists on screen, he pays tribute to his mentor Ronnie Barker and shares how “The Guv'nor” ceremoniously passed on the baton. David also talks about his enduring love for creating characters (think of the voices of Dangerous, or Mr. Toad) and pitches a new Mission Impossible spin-off to Tom Cruise, in response to the fact that Hollywood is the last thing on his list to conquer. We're back for our difficult second series. Guy and Rob carefully curated a list of films that span eight decades and showcase all manner of British comedy....or we just picked some random films from the long list. I forget now. Series two begins with a classic sitcom spin-off. The seventh favourite British sitcom of all time (as recorded in 2004 in a BBC light entertainment list show, so legally binding) the Ronnie Barker vehicle Porridge! Lots to get through for our intrepid hosts, including pondering the likely career trajectory of Richard Beckinsale (had he not been taken from us so early), the likelihood of being able to stand a 12 month stretch of Norman Stanley Fletcher's wise cracks without lamping him and the continued quest to ascertain exactly what makes the comedy transfer from small to big screen, such a difficult process. Our master league table continues from series one, but the quiz scores are reset with Rob having narrowly taken victory in series one. So nerks and nerkettes, enjoy Porridge! Griff - who will be touring his new show from May and filming Griff's Vietnam Adventure this year - joined Tyler to talk about his career (which does include a prominent role in the film adaptation of Spike Milligan's Puckoon) and was more than happy to reminisce about his time on the likes of Not The Nine O'Clock News, Alas Smith & Jones and The Young Ones, as well as university revues, radio, plays and his subsequent documentaries and travel shows over the last twenty years. Includes chat about: * Mel Smith and their long comedy partnership * Some favourite S&J sketches (including Porno & Bribeasy) * The Homemade Xmas Video * The Two Ninnies and Ronnie Barker's reaction to it * Being Bambi * Alexei Sayle * Douglas Adams * John Lloyd * Chris Langham * Beryl Reid flirting with him * The post-war generation of comedians * Almost appearing in Blackadder the Third * Restoration * Cleaning skyscraper windows in New York * Performing in Australia and New Zealand * The television landscape * Reacting to critics * And working with Frankie of course! Ladies n' Genminminmin (er, min...) please welcome Actor, TV Personality, Pantomime Dame, Celebrity &  Legend, Christopher Biggins aka "The Biggins" to the show!An absolute delight & pleasure to welcome a real live "National Treasure" to the Good Listening To 'Clearing'!  Biggins (as we well know!) is a British Actor, Media Celebrity,  Compere & 'Grand Dame' of Pantomime. He officially achieved 'National Treasure' status when he won, as the Nation's favourite, "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!" in 2007.I refer to him here in this episode very affectionately as being a veritable 'sofa cushion' as Biggins has been a 'happy appendage' to all the sofas of all of our favourite TV programme that you'd care to mention over many many years - and long may that continue!Listen with glee in true pantomime style, as Biggins explains how he has managed to get 54" in the bedroom ("Oh yes he has!) with his obsession with Television. "Is that a Plasma Screen you have in your bedroom?" Erm etc... There is nothing like a Dame and in the world of pantomime, there is no Dame quite like Christopher Biggins!  He has a Lifetime Achievement Award to prove it. "Oh yes he does!"  Now in his early 70s, Christopher has been performing in pantomime for 50 years. When he first entered Dame land  in Darlington all those years ago, the ticket price was under two bob (less than 8p in today's currency). However Biggins as the star of the show was rewarded more like a professional footballer!Perhaps that's why Christopher Biggins' dream car and 'Clearing' is riding around in a Bentley Continental convertible! Indeed this podcast is conducted with Christopher Biggins in the back and with me Chris Grimes as his imaginary Chauffeur!Biggins is inspired by the wit and wisdom of the late Oscar Wilde. One particular Wilde quote springs to mind after listening to this particular conversation: “I have the simplest of tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.” Christopher Biggins has had a truly fabulous life and he appreciates it wholeheartedly. His parents made sacrifices to send him to private school where Mrs Christian's elocution lessons smoothed out his West Country burr and prepared him vocally for a travelling actor's life. Whether in Birmingham or Barbados, our Christopher has worked virtually nonstop ever since. A potential petrolhead and pyromaniac, he played Nero in "I Claudius". He played the sex-crazed Vicar in Poldark. He played Lukewarm in Porridge, with Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale. In Rep, in Salisbury and in Bristol, he played umpteen different characters - that was the beauty of Repertory theatre. For London Weekend Television, Biggins was co-compère with Cilla Black in ‘Surprise! Surprise!' Over the years, he has worked with many of the greatest names in the theatre, TV and film - including Cameron Macintosh, John Gielgud, Ralph RichardsTune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Actor, writer and director Lee Moone joins Tyler this week to talk about the history of Spike Milligan's The Phantom Raspberry Blower Of Old London Town and how he brought it to the stage in 2015 with 'Guest Phantoms' Jon Culshaw, Danny Baker and John Challis. Following on from last week's chat with Joel Morris, Lee and Tyler look at the genesis of the original script and dig a bit deeper into its intended purpose: to be a one hour television special for Milligan, Sellers and Secombe that never came off. They talk about its subsequent seventies versions with Ronnie Barker solo and then, more famously, as part of The Two Ronnies. Lee tells Tyler how challenging it was adapting the script for the stage production. The biggest obstacle to its success would have been the non-cooperation of Norma Farnes, Milligan's agent, but thankfully she was supportive of the project and gave it her blessing. A major turning point was enlisting the services of Dirk Maggs as director and with him on board it all began to come together. Lee explains how it could have gone on with an extended series of shows but various factors conspired to prevent this happening - however, Lee is hoping to bring the show back. It's a great conversation with a really interesting guy and we wish Lee all the best in his endeavours to revive the show and keep alive the memory of The Phantom Raspberry Blower Of Old London Town!

Comedy writer, author, podcaster and musician Joel Morris is our special guest this week and what could be more Christmassy than a chat about The Phantom Raspberry Blower Of Old London Town? (Plenty - Ed.) Originally conceived by Spike Milligan as a vehicle for him, Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe, this proposed Goons special was stymied early on by Sellers' filming commitments elsewhere. A couple of years later Milligan dusted off the script and repurposed it for an episode of Six Dates With Barker, Ronnie Barker's 1971 series of one-off plays (similar to the Comedy Playhouse format which spawned a number of sitcoms) and if it had been left at that then it's highly likely that few people would remember it today. However, in 1976 Ronnie Barker collaborated with Milligan to expand the length of the play and serialise it in weekly episodes for the fifth series of The Two Ronnies. It is this version that is most fondly remembered by the public and is generally considered to be the strongest of the Ronnies' serials. Joel joins Tyler to laud the lost art of the comic play and talks about Milligan's genius, with a few caveats (Joel presents a strong argument that when writing without the grounding influence of collaborators Spike's ideas were often in danger of becoming loosed from their moorings) and there's also plenty of time to talk about other comedy too, including Peter Cook, The Office and Python. Joel is currently writing a book about comedy and is the host of the podcast Comfort Blanket: https://pod.link/1614879928

Our guest this week is podcaster and producer Tilt Araiza, who joins Tyler to talk about Michael Bentine and his ground-breaking television series It's A Square World. Written by Bentine and John Law, It's A Square World ran on the BBC from 1960-64 totalling 57 episodes and was a clear influence on later comedy series, notably Monty Python's Flying Circus. As well as Bentine the programme featured the likes of Clive Dunn, Frank Thornton, Deryck Guyler, John Bluthal, Benny Lee, Dick Emery, Ronnie Barker and Sherie Winton. It won the Press Prize at the Rose d'Or Festival in Montreux in 1963 and scooped a Light Entertainment BAFTA award the year before. This week's show is roughly divided into two parts: the second half mainly focuses on It's A Square World but firstly Tilt & Tyler talk more generally about Bentine's extraordinary life. Having grown up enjoying many of the trappings of privilege his early years were marked by an inability to communicate properly, thanks to some avoidable home-surgery on his tonsils. Later he faced innumerable barriers to entry into the Second World War due to his Peruvian roots and when he finally did enter the services he was almost killed due to a mistake during a routine typhoid vaccination and was in a coma for several weeks. He later recovered and joined Military Intelligence and was among those who helped liberate Bergen-Belsen. Despite all this he retained an optimistic, positive disposition and swept away on the currents of his imagination and facility for invention he found success as a comedian and performer in the late nineteen-forties. He met Harry Secombe who in turn introduced him to some friends of his, Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers, and the seeds of The Goon Show were planted. Bentine would later go on to find fame on television with shows like It's A Square World and also his childrens' series such as the much-loved Potty Time in the seventies. A committed believer in the paranormal he became President of the Association For the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena and somehow found time to sail yachts, shoot, practise archery and go on hovercraft expeditions up the Amazon. As for It's A Square World, producer Barry Lupino told the Radio Times in 1961: “It has been called a diversion for the low in brow – but I wonder? The topics are lofty enough. What could be more uplifting than the opening of the Royal Academy?... Nor of course shall we overlook the situation in Volcania, of the effects of children's television on the adult viewer, and the arrival and departure of distinguished personages in the great metropolis.” The series also has the distinction of likely producing the first Dr Who parody – with Clive Dunn turning up barely a month after DW began dressed in an unmistakably Hartnellesque fashion. All this and more is up for discussion in what is likely to be the first of a two part Bentine retrospective (Tilt will return next year).

Lines From My Grandfather's Forehead (From 15th March 1971) Lines From My Grandfather's Forehead, is a British comedy radio sketch show, first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1971. Two series of eight episodes were broadcast and in addition, there were two special episodes. A Christmas special, entitled Lines From My Grandfather Christmas's Forehead and a compilation of selected items from past editions, under the title Just A Few Lines From My Grandfather's Forehead. The show was created by BBC Radio producer John Fawcett Wilson and Ronnie Barker and featured Barker together with Terence Brady and Pauline Yates and Gordon Langford at the piano. Some editions also featured guitarist Dick Abell. Each programme was a sequence of comedy sketches, monologues and comic songs. The writers were credited on each recording but the items they wrote were not named, so identifying the author of a particular item is difficult. Among the writers was Gerald Wiley, which was a pseudonym used by Ronnie Barker to submit material without using his own name whilst other writers included Jim Eldridge, Spike Milligan and Harold Pinter. The then director of programmes for BBC Radio, Gerard Mansell, described the show as having a "very individual type of humour, quite unlike that of any other TV or radio programme".Written by Terence Brady, Donald Churchill, David Climie, John Graham, Charles McKay, Spike Milligan, Peter Spence, Roger Till & Gerald Wiley.Produced by John Fawcett WilsonA BBC Radio Production.Lines From My Grandfather's Forehead is available here: https://amzn.to/2YlosEb The Comedy Slab Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, Spotify and Youtube. Zadie Smith 'At times hilarious, at others heartbreaking, Andrusier's memoir provides a fascinating insight into obsession.' John Boyne 'Hilarious and moving.' David Baddiel "I'd managed to puncture a hole between our universe and the parallel one where all the celebrities lived." Adam Andrusier spent his childhood in pursuit of autographs. After writing to every famous person he could think of, from Frank Sinatra to Colonel Gaddafi, he soon jostled with the paparazzi at stage doors and came face-to-face with the most famous people on the planet. For young Adam, autographs were a backstage pass to a world beyond his chaotic family home in Pinner, and his Holocaust-obsessed father. They provided a special connection to a world of glamour and significance lying just beyond his reach. But as Adam turned from collector to dealer, learning how to spot a fake from the real deal, he discovered that in life, as in autographs, not everything is as it first appears. When your obsession is a search for the authentic, what happens when you discover fraudulence in your own family? Two Hitlers and a Marilyn is a hilarious and moving account of discovering that idols are mortals. It's a story of growing up, forgiveness and discovering a place in the world. 'Madcap and thoroughly engaging, Adam Andrusier's vivid memoir brings to mind the early Philip Roth. This is a book of antic comedy that resonates and intrigues.' Lisa Appignanesi 'A fabulously interesting book and incredibly pleasurable to read. Very funny and strangely entrancing. It is about so much, but effortlessly.' Adam Phillips 'Adam Andrusier has created that rare thing: a memoir which delivers the coming-of-age but also reaches far beyond. The writing here about family is excellent, the characters and scenes memorable, but from the first they're engaged also in a history. Two Hitlers and a Marilyn takes in the world as widely as possible, always searching for significance and connection.' David Vann 'Beautifully written.' Maureen Lipman

This episode features part two of a conversation with activist, writer, and speaker Robyn Ochs in honor of Bisexual Awareness Month. Part one is featured in last week's episode. Robyn is known worldwide for her work on LGBTQ issues with a focus on bisexual+ identities. She is the editor of two anthologies: the 42-country collection Getting Bi: Voices of Bisexuals Around the World (with co-editor Sarah Rowley) and RECOGNIZE: The Voices of Bisexual Men (with co-editor H. Sharif Williams). She also edits the Bi Women Quarterly, which will soon begin its 38th year of publication. This time the conversation addresses shifting perspectives about labels (the word "heterosexible" is accidentally invented), gathering the diverse voices included in the RECOGNIZE anthology, and ways to be a good ally to bisexual+ people. Later, for Podcast Appreciation Month, co-hosts Mary McGinley, Wendy Sheridan, and Robin Renée talk up their favorites. The friendly feature conversation raises the mood from the week's News segment, which includes major cases reaching the Supreme Court on October 8th regarding whether Title VII protects LGBTQ+ people, an ICE training facility, and the loss of rock musicians Eddie Money and Ric Ocasek. Notable days mentioned at the top of the show: National Women's Health & Fitness Day (September 25th), National Shamu the Whale Day (September 26th), Drink Beer Day, Save Your Photos Day, and National Public Lands Day (September 28th), and National Love People Day (September 30th). Birthday shout outs go to Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino, Will Smith, Mark Hamill, Barbara Walters,Ronnie Barker, Olivia Newton-John, Serena Williams, Brigitte Bardot, Halsey, Elie Weisel, T-Pain, and Jimmy Carter. For comedian Dom Joly, travel is in the blood. Born in Beirut he had what in his recent book, The Hezbollah Hiking Club, he describes as a curiously paradoxical childhood between a posh Oxford boarding school and a warzone. He dreamt of being a foreign correspondent, for his first travel book investigated ‘dark tourism’ and the world’s most unlikely holiday destinations and travelled the globe in search of mythical monsters such as Bigfoot and the Yeti, notching up almost 100 countries in the process. Not one to do things in any conventional manner, for this episode Lisa gets a tour around Oxford in Dom Joly’s car.   On this episode we cover:   Travelling through Oxford Emulating James Corden Dom not looking like a Goth Being a Goth in a hot country, melting by the beach Wanting to make a documentary about Goths Getting beaten up in Beirut because of wearing make up The Civil War starting in Beirut Being at the same school as Osama Bin Laden Moving to the Dragon School in Oxford Beirut being exciting and amazing and a warzone His new book The Hezbollah Hiking Club being a love-letter to Lebanon Periods where his family had to leave by boat Being bombed at home and having to hide in the garden Being half an hour from the beach and the ski zone Never enjoying living anywhere else more Loving the perceived danger of Lebanon (when he really just had a lovely holiday) No-one writing anything good about Lebanon The vastly different topographic landscape of Lebanon People think Lebanon is desert but a lot looks like Switzerland His family partly coming from Lausanne, Huguenots that ended up in London The family moving to Turkey then Beirut How Dom should do Who Do You Think You Are? Inequality Makes Us Anxious

Inequality makes people anxious. How? Well, according to Kate Pickett, in unequal societies we become more conscious of our position in society, more aware of our status. That creates anxiety. And that in turn is linked to all sorts of bad outcomes, such as obesity, lower life-expectancy, and higher levels of teenage pregnancy. It's also linked, claims Professor Pickett, to consumerism. In unequal societies, she says, we're more likely to want the branded watch or handbag. Then, as you'll hear, there's the weird connection between inequality and female attraction to men…. How often do you think about other peoples' opinion of you? In many parts of the world status is something we can change through education, occupation and wealth but what if you come from a culture where the status you are born with is inescapable? We speak to author Sujatha Gidla about growing up as one of India's Untouchables: the outcasts of the country's rigid Caste system. Lifestyle and fashion blogger Sasha Wilson shows us how high the status stakes are in the completive online world of Instagram. And is the pursuit of status bad for our mental health? Professor Richard Wilkinson believes so and argues that the bigger the gap between rich and poor the greater our obsession becomes with it. Finally, is status something we can just buy? Brian Hamilton runs a business selling Scottish noble titles to the highest bidder and so presenter Priscilla Ngethe considers becoming Baroness of Pentland… (Field recordings of the Shuar Ecuadorian Indians thanks to Mike Woloszyn and freesound.org) Image: John Cleese, Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett in the Class Sketch from Frost Over England, 1967 (Credit: BBC)

On the football front Leicester City are still top of the league and virtually everyone is supporting them….even inJapan…they had a programme on TV where they had sold out of Leicester football shirts in some town in the Far East…..it’s always nice to see the underdog coming through…I hope they win the premiership….and England are in the final of the 20/20 cricket world cup…the slogging one…much better than the drawn out 5– dayers…here we go…here we go…here we go. On the entertainment front Jeremy Kyle has replaced Piers Morgan on the morning breakfast news show….and I hate to admit it but he is very good…much better than Piers…which isn’t hard….I’m amazed Ant and Dec aren’t on there…. And we have had the sad news of the passing away of the great Ronnie Corbett…to me he was a comedy genius and together with Ronnie Barker produced some of the best comedy ever…those were the years when comedy was FUNNY unlike today…they have been showing some of his classic sketches which never date. Joined by the talents of Richard Beckinsale, Fulton Mackay and Brian Wilde Porridge entertained the British public for four years. Set in the fictional Slade prison in Cumberland Norman Stanley Fletcher is sentenced to five years. He is joined by first time criminal Leonard Godber and the two are paired off together in a cell much to Fletchers annoyance. Slowly the two become good friends and Godber learns that little victories are what can keep a man sane in prison. Keeping an eye on the inmates is ex drill sergeant Mr Mackay who rules the block with a rod of iron. Second to Mackay is the ever pondering Mr Barrowclough who Fletcher easily wraps round his finger.
