Today, we're joined by a Saturday night TV stalwart whose esteemed dance career has propelled him to stages and screens around the world, all without losing the cheeky glint he might as well have patented by now. It's the charming Anton Du Beke!Anton joins us just as he begins a mammoth tour across the UK. He chats about how the mistakes of his early days ended up paving the way for an overnight success, forty years in the making. We also talk about Anton's constant drive for greater success, the scarcely believable first impression he made on his wife and turning fascination into friendship with the likes of Bruce Forsyth and Len Goodman. It's a fascinating conversation with a national treasure who doesn't take himself too seriously - but takes his work hugely seriously. For all the latest news, click here to follow us on Instagram!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. As the annual festive battle wears on to decide whether the family will spend this evening watching new spangly Content™ from a surfeit of modern entertainment platforms or the much-loved VHS tape of yuletide specials from yesteryear instead, it is a time of high resolution - it is a time of low resolution - and it is of course time to try and forget about making New Year resolutions altogether... The Peggy Mount Calamity Hour is no exception to this televisual knife-edge, and has opted this Hogmanay to watch Bruce Forsyth and The Generation Game's New Year's Day episode from 1973. It's business as usual at Television Centre with a seasonal twist, which means the side-eyes, barbed comments, bickering and general failure to understand any of the rules means the programme should match the mood of your living room, perfectly. How arbitrary is the scoring system for vast swathes of this game? How axiomatic are Forsyth's helpful hints during its climactic round? And how apoplectic is Ernie going to be when he remembers in three days' time it was the headphones he wanted? Resolve to press Play every day (or until you forget, around January 4th) and find out... The Peggy Mount Calamity Hour is a free podcast from iPorle Media, which holds production copyright. Robert William Hoskins, actor, born 26 October 1942; died 29 April 2014.It didn't matter that this guy—who left school at 15 to become a bouncer, porter, window cleaner, and fire-eater—went on to become ridiculously famous. He was always down-to-earth: "Actors are just entertainers, even the serious ones. That's all an actor is. He's like a serious Bruce Forsyth."Hoskins could play serious and scary, then turn on a dime to reveal sweetness and a big heart.A chance audition led him to the theatre, which opened the door to roles in BBC dramas and a beloved ad for British Telecom, where he delivered the catchphrase "It's good to talk." Around that time, Francis Ford Coppola cast him in The Cotton Club (1984), and suddenly he was in movies. Brazil followed, then Sweet Liberty, his Oscar-nominated turn as an ex-con in Mona Lisa, the blockbuster Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Heart Condition, Mermaids, Hook, and Oliver Stone's Nixon, where he played J. Edgar Hoover."You don't go to Hollywood for art," he said in 1999. "And once you've got your fame and fortune—especially the fortune in the bank—you can do what you want to do. It's basically f**k-you money."In 2012, at 69, he announced his retirement after being diagnosed with Parkinson's. Two years later, he died from pneumonia.Miss you, Bob Hoskins. Steve thought his performances were comedic genius, especially his interaction with contestants. And he came to appreciate Sir Bruce's other talents too, like his singing and dancing abilities. As well as the Generation Game, his seven-decade career took in Sunday Night at The London Palladium, one-man stage shows, Play Your Cards Right and Strictly Come Dancing. Indeed, it has been said that the story of Sir Bruce Forsyth is the story of modern entertainment television in Britain. That's why Steve has nominated Sir Bruce as a Great Life. Gerard Hoffnung's life was short. He died in 1959 at the age of 34, but this cartoonist, musician, broadcaster and raconteur achieved a lot in that time. Born in Berlin, he lived most of his life in London. His charming cartoons which often gently poked fun at musicians and conductors were printed in magazines and books. His wife Annetta said he was always on-show and even a trip to the bank could turn into an uproarious occasion. Having caught the attention of the BBC he recorded a series of interviews with Charles Richardson, and his delivery of 'The Bricklayer's Lament' to the Oxford Union in 1958 is considered a triumph of comedic story-telling. The Hoffnung concerts which combined music and comedy sold out quicker than Liberace.Harry Enfield discovered Hoffnung when he was looking through the records in his local library. He knows it's boring for comedians to talk about timing but Hoffnung's was brilliant, and he finds it annoying that comedy wasn't even his main job. Harry got to know the family later on and his impersonation of Gerard became the inspiration for his own character 'Sir Henry'. Harry's joined in the studio by Gerard and Annetta's children, Emily and Benedict Hoffnung.Future episodes in this series include Alice Roberts on Emma, Queen of England, Journalist Steve Richards on Bruce Forsyth and Baronness Ros Altman on Antoni Gaudi.Presenter: Matthew Parris Producer: Toby Field for BBC Studios Audio

"I remember he once castigated me for picking up a wine bottle by its neck." That's David Renwick talking about dining out with Spike Milligan, and in the early eighties Renwick, along with his regular writing partner Andrew Marshall, worked on Spike's 'Q10-by-another-name' There's A Lot Of It About. David joins Tyler this week to talk about Spike the man, the comic, the creative juggernaut, and how to a certain extent the incorrigible Milligan acted as a sort of self-appointed patron to the two younger writers. That said, by this point in their careers they were well on the way to becoming household-name comedy writers with hit shows such as The Burkiss Way on the radio and End Of Part One on television, and Whoops Apocalypse just around the corner. David also had regular writing responsibilities on other shows, notably The Two Ronnies, and within a few years Renwick and Marshall would be the driving forces behind shows such as Alexei Sayle's Stuff. However, it is for two major series in the 1990s (and into the 2000s) that David Renwick is best known: One Foot In The Grave and Jonathan Creek. As well as discussing Milligan, David talked at length about other aspects of his career, in particular One Foot In The Grave (including an explanation as to how the series is shot through with Neil Simon's creative DNA), as well as his early comedy influences, attending recordings of I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again and Monty Python's Flying Circus (and is it any wonder that Tim Brooke-Taylor from the former and Eric Idle from the latter were both involved with One Foot In The Grave?), his short-lived career as a journalist on a local newspaper, writing for Mike Yarwood, Bruce Forsyth's Big Night, working with David Jason again in the 2010s on the radio show Desolation Jests and... Bill Cosby. Tyler's only regret? That he forgot to ask about *that* episode of Father Ted.

For those of a more precise nature (as fans of Sooz's big Crush might be), the correct score is 84%, and not, as stated in the show, a measly 17%.  Congratulations Sooz! Admin Klaxon We've started a Substack for the show, as a way of sharing fun bits, and a place to build a leaderboard showing which guest is scientifically most compatible with their Crush.  For posterity.  You can find it here: crushedbymcs.substack.com  We're planning some live shows later in the year - if that sounds like the sort of thing you'd like, come and follow us on Substack as we'll announce them there first.  More info will follow soon.  It's free to sign up - do come and say hi!  See you in two weeks!  Team Crushed xx

This episode contains neither chickens nor dancing. We realised this week that Carrie is in urgent need of telephone etiquette classes. Apparently professional designers should always make their clients a major part of their wedding party. We discovered that not only is Vanessa a wonderful person, but a talented doodle artist. And finally, we learned that the late Bruce Forsyth wasn't a perv (that we know of)

The Big Freeze Boxing Day evening 1962 The Christmas Number One at the top of the hit parade was Return to Sender by Elvis Presley All around the country, families were settling down after a busy two days of eating, drinking and making merry. Small screen entertainment on the tv that evening included a hilarious variety show from the London Palladium featuring Bruce Forsyth and Norman Wisdom and the BBCs big Boxing Day movie was Moulin Rouge starring Jose Ferrer and Zsa Zsa Gabor And then, it began to snow. A day late and tantalisingly close to giving the country a proper White Christmas, but snow nevertheless. The temperature dropped…..and it continued to snow. And it snowed and snowed, and it got colder. And it snowed and it snowed some more And that was how it would be for the next one hundred days or so as Britain was plunged into an icy wilderness that would last until the following March. Industry ground to halt as businesses and schools were forced to close. There was widespread panic as ambulances and fire crews were unable to respond to emergencies. Essential supplies and medication failed to get through to hospitals and over half the natural wildlife population died in the freezing temperatures, unable to forage to food. Nothing could be done to stop the bitter temperatures and the relentless snowfall   Ladies and gentlemen, Rainbow Valley is proud to present the story of The Big Freeze     You can follow the podcast on Twitter @rv_podcast  Join our Facebook group at Facebook/rainbowvalleypodcast    Or send us your thoughts and feedback to rainbowvalleypod@gmail.com   This has been a Stinking Pause production.   Thanks for listening   Scott

Denis' career encompasses almost every aspect of show business from singing and performing to recording and composing. His musical career began at the age of six as a banjolele-playing singer at children's matinees. The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins was conceived, directed and produced by Graham Stark and he managed to bring together the likes of Bruce Forsyth, Harry H Corbett, Leslie Phillips, Alfie Bass, June Whitfield, Ronnie Barker and others to appear in a series of interlinked sketches illustrating the titular sins. Notably, it also featured two Goons - Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe - the former writing and appearing in a standout sequence called 'Sloth' while his erstwhile colleague adopts a series of desperate disguises to hoodwink Geoffrey Bayldon in 'Envy'. Things discussed include: On The Buses, recasting with Terry Scott, Paul Hardcastle's The Wizard, walnuts, Keith Flint from The Prodigy, 'Boob Coverage', Bert Kwouk's stunt double, the extremely talented Madeline Smith, the mystery of DB Cooper and much much more! Between 1964 and 1965 a still unidentified serial killer took the lives of six sex workers in London, earning the nickname “Jack the Stripper” as their bodies were left naked or undressed in public. The emphasis is on the pre-Goons days, particularly his wartime service and post-war pursuit of fame as a fledgling comedian and variety turn. It's a warm appreciation of the man who would go on to become Ned of Wales and one of Britain's best-loved entertainers. Features stories such as Jimmy Edwards and a case of mistaken identity, a troublesome kidney stone, that fateful first meeting with Spike, Harry as a young shaver belting out hymns from the outdoor thunderbox and his time touring Italy to entertain the troops. For this exclusive interview with TMR, we are joined by Dr Malcam B Splead—Head of Snow Studies in the University of Devizes, UK, for an in-depth conversation on the intriguing subject of The Snowosphere, a hitherto much neglected topic in the field of Snow Studies, but one that is quietly gaining attention in the halls of scientific academia. Under the right conditions, snow simply "falls" to the ground. Or does it? But what if this so-called "falling" should turn out to be merely a feature of human perception? What if, contrary to all expectations, this oh-so-familiar phenomenon should best be explained by counterintuitive interactions between the Earth itself and this strange, neglected entity - The Snowosphere? As Dr Iain Livermore explains: "Should a scientific consensus on the matter be finally reached, Snowosphere Theory not only promises to revolutionise the discipline of snowology, it may even come to challenge our ideas about gravity, mass and the role of mathematics in the description of empirical observations." It's easy to see why Bruce Forsyth nicknamed Tess Daly 'Miss Sunshine'. With age defying beauty, a dazzling smile and a disposition to match, she's a darling of British Television. But boy, has she worked to get there. From mooching around the streets of Salford to modelling in Paris, Barcelona, Tokyo and New York, she has climbed dizzying heights to Strictly stardom. In this pre-lockdown tea break, Tess reflects on her roots, her work ethic and redefining the confines of 'age appropriate'. She reveals what it felt like to go from 'TV babe' to 'geriatric' presenter a day after hitting 40 and why beauty is always best placed on the inside. But now, at 51, what's next for Tess? How does she keep her children grounded? And how many Cadbury's Twirls does she really keep in her car? Plus, we hear tips on how to keep your teeth in shape post-menopause from dental expert, Elaine Tilling.
