While in the small East African country of Burundi, Charlie recently led a team teaching GraceLife Institute courses in partnership with Pastor Anicet Ndikuriyo of Grace Bible Church, Burundi (with 60 locations) and Grace Initiative for Burundi. Along with pastors Marvin Effa (Bethany Bible Church, Plano, TX) and John Salvesen (Bear Creek Bible Church, Keller, TX), they taught Grace and Romans, Basic Bible Doctrine, and Bible Study Methods. Also, John's wife, Carolyn, taught Ruth to 24 key women church leaders. Of the 110 men pastors and leaders, 20 graduated the four-year curriculum. About a third of the pastors and leaders were new and many came to faith and assurance of salvation. Listen to each of these teachers and host, Anicet, report on what they saw and experienced. They will also challenge others to consider ministry in Burundi. God blessed the ministries of those who went, those who came,  and those who worked.

One of my favorite (and most frequent) guests, Gabby Bernstein is back, and I know you’re all just as thrilled as I am. We even joked that she should be a co-host (you never know, right?). Today we’re talking about judgment, and I personally couldn’t agree more with the importance of talking about this topic. Judgment is the root of so many problems and whether we’re judging others or ourselves, it’s so bad that we barely realize we’re doing it.   Believing that deep down we are all loving, kind and compassionate people, Gabby felt called to write her newest book, Judgment Detox, in an effort to explain how judgment separates us from our true nature and instead makes us feel guilty, which in turn makes us judge more, which again makes us feel guilty and so on – the judgment cycle.   Fortunately, she has a six-step process that is virtually guaranteed to help us all out and it could not come at a better time for the entire world. Don’t miss out on this enlightening episode as she gives us a few sneak peeks of the wisdom in her latest book as well as a look into her creative process, asking for help and her hopes for a baby in 2018. I can’t wait for you to hear (and share) this beautiful conversation with others!   --      Questions Asked in This Episode: Can you share why you wrote Judgment Detox and what it is? Was judgment something that kept coming up for you so much that you wrote the book? When there’s an addiction to something, what do you think it’s serving and how do we interrupt the pattern? What creative process do you use that honors the messages you write about? How do you set up each of your writing sessions, and what rituals do you do beforehand? How did you discover your writing strengths and weaknesses? What’s one of the biggest boundaries you’ve had to set up or reinforce? What does your self-talk look like when you walk away from stress? Have you missed out on anything from implementing this boundary? How do you enjoy the process when there are so many new opportunities coming your way? What advice would you give someone who's ready to step out into their goals and dreams, but has fear around putting themselves out there? What has been one of the biggest things you’ve implemented in 2017 that has helped you the most? What is the best advice you feel you’ve ever gotten? What is your biggest hope for Judgment Detox?   In This Episode We Talk about: Why Gabby wrote Judgment Detox How the book is designed to help change your beliefs that hold you back with her six-step process Why judgment is the root cause of all of our problems Gabby’s definition of the “judgment cycle” What Gabby’s healing with her Judgment Detox process and what she’s still working on The wounds that lie beneath judgment The Emotion Freedom Technique (tapping) How Gabby writes to heal The importance of finding what makes you feel safe Making it a priority to hire help sooner than later Hiring people for their energy, not necessarily their experience The timing of pregnancy and babies And so much more…   Quotes: “Judgment is such a huge separation from our spiritual connection and our alignment to a higher power.”   “When we judge we separate from love.”   “Witness your judgment without judgment.”   “I don’t believe in my judgment anymore.”   “I’m choosing to be happy rather than right.”   “Ask for what you want in 2018.”   “The more creative I am, the less space there is for judgment.”   “Change the way you look at things.”     -- Gabrielle Bernstein is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Universe Has Your Back, and has written five additional bestsellers. Did you ever wander away from God after you were a Christian? Listen to this lesson to learn about a parable Jesus told about a sheep who left the fold to go his own way and how the shepherd took the initiative to seek him and bring him back to the fold. Learn that God is the Good Shepherd who rejoices when the sheep is found and restored. Learn that no matter what has happened in our past, we can always be forgiven and begin again to walk by means of the Spirit.

Do you feel like you’re the one that’s always having to forgive others even when they have mistreated you? Listen to this lesson to learn that none of us have ever been betrayed the way Jesus was by His own creatures. See that in grace He took the initiative when He died on the Cross for our sins even when we were His enemies. Listen to the warning not to become bitter at others but to live in peace so you can have a productive life as a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Week #2 of the "Grace Initiative" reminds us of the transforming power of God's Grace. We examine a fascinating encounter Jesus had with an adulterous woman and a group of legalistic, self-righteous, rock throwing, religious leaders. Through this story, we learn that righteousness is not built on the foundation of law, but rather grace - exhibited by a God who stoops. Our city, schools, places of work, neighborhoods are filled with people, who, like the adulterous woman, are broken, wounded, far from God, living a life of sin. Do we have a responsibility to these people? Absolutely! Jesus prayed in John 17 "Father just as you have sent me into the world, I am sending them." Two application questions to consider in light of our text this morning: (a) How have I experienced God's Grace in my life? (b) How am I extending God's Grace to others? Questions For Discussion: (adapted from Max Lucado’s book, Grace: More Than We Deserve, Greater Than We Imagine) 1. Read 1 John 2:1-2 a. What is it that gives us the power to keep from sinning? b. On what basis is Jesus our advocate? 2. Read John 8:1-11 and discuss how grace functions in opposition to the law? 3. In this story the Pharisees are 100% right and yet they are so wrong – what does this mean? 4. Read and discuss Romans 5:18-21 (include a reading from The Message). Romans 5:20 (Msg) describes God's grace as "aggressive." How was Jesus' encounter with the adulterous woman an example of aggressive grace? Have you experienced aggressive grace? Have you witnessed it in the lives of others? Explain. 5. What does Jesus' posture (He stooped) tell us about the nature of grace? 6. Jesus prayed in John 17:18 "Father just as you have sent me into the world, I am sending them." Who is Jesus referring to? As Jesus was sent, so are we to go – what does this mean? 7. What will you do differently this week, if anything, as a result of this discussion?

This week we are beginning our Church Wide Initiative. Each year we focus for six weeks on a topic that everyone involved at CLCC can participate in. This year our overall theme is "The Grace Initiative." We are loosely following Max Lucado's book: Grace: More Than We Deserve, Greater Than We Imagine. We will look at such areas as: The Hope of Glory; The God Who Stoops; Keep on Believing; Grace is Contagious; Grace Dethrones your Fear; and Grace Guarantees Heaven. To begin, this week we are looking at a text that tells us that it is "Christ in you, the hope of glory." This is a uniquely Christian concept. No other religion or philosophy claims that their hero lives in them. Nobody says that Mohammed lives in them or that Buddha lives in them. But we believe that Christ lives in us. In the context of the passage of scripture we are studying, the emphasis is on the "you." Paul does not say "Christ in Us." That is not the point. It could be imagined that Christ could live in Paul. He was a Jew, a rather strict one at that, at least in his early days. But the letter to the Colossians is written to people very unlike Paul. They were Gentiles, people who were clueless about the Old Testament, Jewish history and God's commandments. They had none of the marks that would distinguish them as good raw material for sainthood. Yet the mystery of it is that God in his great mercy had decided to indwell whosoever believed in his dear son John 3:16). This indwelling presence shapes those in whom he dwells. Grace changes us. But not only that, Grace brings hope. Hope that we have an inheritance with God for eternity. This is the "hope of glory." Glory here is a reference to the fullness of God's presence and power in that place we usually call heaven. The Apostle Paul went through a lot of hardships to share this message with us. It consumed his life. We should pay attention. The Gospel is more that the understanding that Jesus lived, died and rose again for us. He lives in Us. This is a life changing thought. Questions for Discussion: 1. Slide 1-4. Paul's teaching in Colossians is that Jesus is preeminent; unlike any other God or philosophy. Why is this important to the Gospel story? Why might this be important to keep in mind today? 2. Slide 8-9. Notice how Paul refers to the Church as the body of Christ. What does he mean when he says he is making up for what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions? How might our (or Paul's) suffering complete Christ's work, not in terms of salvation but in terms of witness to the world? 3. Slide 10-11. Why does Paul call the Gospel a mystery revealed? To whom might it be the most mysterious? 4. Slide 12-15. Who might we not think the right raw material for sainthood? What does this tell us about grace? What might grace and surprise have in common? 5. Slide 16-18. Read 1 Cor. 7:12-14. This is an illustration of the principle that holiness is more contagious than uncleanness. Does that bring hope?
