Dernier exemple en date : Disney, qui vient de signer un accord stratégique avec OpenAI. Un partenariat qui permettra à l'outil vidéo Sora d'utiliser des personnages iconiques de la marque, de Mickey Mouse à tout l'univers Disney. Dans la foulée, le groupe américain s'est engagé à investir un milliard de dollars dans le capital d'OpenAI.Une somme impressionnante… mais qui paraît presque dérisoire au regard des finances de l'entreprise dirigée par Sam Altman. Car OpenAI dépense énormément, et même de plus en plus vite. La course à l'intelligence artificielle est devenue un champ de bataille industriel où chaque avancée technologique se paie au prix fort, en puissance de calcul, en infrastructures et en talents. Selon plusieurs estimations relayées par le média Mashable, ce milliard de dollars fraîchement injecté ne suffirait à couvrir que trois à quatre semaines des pertes actuelles d'OpenAI. Une donnée vertigineuse, qui prend encore plus de relief lorsqu'on la compare aux engagements globaux de l'entreprise : cette somme représenterait à peine un millième des dépenses prévues à moyen terme.Autrement dit, OpenAI brûle du cash à un rythme rarement vu dans l'histoire récente de la tech. Au point que certains analystes commencent à évoquer, à voix basse, un scénario longtemps jugé impensable : celui d'une fragilité financière, voire d'une faillite à long terme si le modèle économique ne se stabilise pas. Cette inquiétude intervient dans un contexte moins favorable qu'il n'y paraît. Ces derniers mois, un décrochage technologique a été observé entre ChatGPT et son principal concurrent, Gemini, développé par Google. Avec Gemini 3, le géant californien a repris une position de leader, laissant planer le doute sur la capacité d'OpenAI à conserver son avance initiale. L'histoire de la tech est riche de précédents. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for November 21, 2025 is: bloviate • BLOH-vee-ayt • verb To bloviate is to speak or write in an arrogant tone and with more words than are necessary. // The podcaster tends to bloviate endlessly on topics about which he is not particularly knowledgeable. Warren G. Harding is often linked to the word bloviate, but to him the word wasn't insulting; it simply meant "to spend time idly." Harding used the word often in that "hanging around" sense, but during his tenure as the 29th U.S. President (1921-23), he became associated with the "verbose" sense of bloviate, as his speeches tended to be on the long-winded side. Although he is sometimes credited with having coined the word, it's more likely that Harding picked it up from local slang while hanging around with his boyhood buddies in Ohio in the late 1800s. The term likely comes from a combination of the word blow plus the suffix -ate.

Its most common function today is as a verb meaning “to play and move about happily,” as in “children frolicking in the waves,” but it joined the language in the 16th century as an adjective carrying the meaning of its Dutch source vroolijk: “full of fun; merry.” Shakespeare's Puck used it this way in A Midsummer Night's Dream, saying “And we fairies … following darkness like a dream, now are frolic.” Verb use quickly followed, and by the early 17th century the word was also being used as a noun, as in “an evening of fun and frolic.”

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 17, 2025 is: kibosh • KYE-bosh • noun Kibosh refers to something that serves as a check or stop. It is usually used in the phrase “put the kibosh on” to mean “to stop or end (something)” or “to prevent (something) from happening or continuing.” // I downloaded an app to help me put the kibosh on my high screen time. Evidence of kibosh dates the word to only a few years before Charles Dickens used it in an 1836 sketch, but despite kibosh being relatively young its source is elusive. Claims were once made that it was Yiddish, despite the absence of a plausible Yiddish source. Another hypothesis pointed to the Irish term caidhp bhais, literally, “coif (or cap) of death,” explained as headgear a judge put on when pronouncing a death sentence, or as a covering pulled over the face of a corpse when a coffin was closed. But evidence for any metaphorical use of this phrase in Irish is lacking, and kibosh is not recorded in English as spoken in Ireland until decades after Dickens's use. Despite appearances, winsome bears no relation to the familiar word win, meaning “to achieve victory.” The Old English predecessor of winsome is wynsum, which in turn comes from the noun wynn, meaning “joy” or “pleasure.” And the ancestor of win is the Old English verb winnan, meaning “to labor or strive.” Given those facts, one might guess that the adjective winning, meaning “tending to please or delight,” as in “a winning personality,” is a winsome relation, but in fact it's in the win/winnan lineage. Winning is more common today than the similar winsome in such constructions as “a winning/winsome smile,” but we sense no hard feelings between the two. It's just the way things (lexically) go: you win some, you lose some.
