Episode 299: The Hidden Emotional Needs Behind Our Tech Habits with Jay Vidyarthi

Centered in the City

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 20, 2026 45:08

What if the way you use technology could actually teach you more about yourself? We spend so much of our lives surrounded by technology—scrolling, searching, streaming, texting, working, and increasingly, asking AI to think alongside us. But what if our relationship with technology isn't just about willpower or screen time? What if it's a window into our deeper emotional needs? In this episode of Centered in the City, I'm joined by Jay Vidyarthi, award-winning author of Reclaim Your Mind, designer, entrepreneur, and thought leader at the intersection of mindfulness and technology. Jay has spent more than 15 years practicing meditation and has helped design more than 50 technologies aimed at improving human wellbeing. His work includes Muse, the Healthy Minds Program, and other innovative approaches to using technology in service of human flourishing. We explore what it really means to reclaim our minds in a world designed to capture our attention. Jay offers a nuanced perspective: there is absolutely a responsibility on technology companies and attention-harvesting platforms to create healthier digital environments, but there is also a personal responsibility to become more aware of how and why we engage with technology. And that awareness can tell us a lot. In this conversation, we explore: Why our relationship with technology can be a mirror for our deeper emotional needs How scrolling, notifications, and algorithms can give us a watered-down version of what we're actually seeking How self-awareness can help us recognize when we're being hooked by an algorithm Why simply blaming technology doesn't give us back our agency How mindfulness or journaling can help us pause long enough to notice what we're actually looking for How to create a more empowered and intentional relationship with technology How we can use AI to enhance our capabilities without cannibalizing the very human capacities we want to preserve Why protecting our attention may be one of the most important ways we protect our humanity   Take a listen to this episode and share your takeaways with us on Instagram @OneWade  and @jay.vidyarthi   Resources: Centered Walks: Guided walking meditations to support you getting out of your head and into your body 100 Mindful Moments to Balance & Energize by Wade Brill Reclaim Your Mind By Jay Vidyarthi   ***** Jay Vidyarthi is the award-winning author of RECLAIM YOUR MIND and an accomplished designer, entrepreneur, and thought leader at the unique intersection of mindfulness and technology. As the founder of Still Ape, he's been involved in over fifty technologies that have helped millions of people improve their well-being, including Muse, the Healthy Minds Program, Sonic Cradle, and many more. His work and ideas have been featured by Harvard, MIT, TED, Forbes, CNN, Fast Company, Psychology Today, and Mashable. A meditation practitioner for over fifteen years, Jay is as comfy on a silent retreat as he is challenging his son to epic video game battles. On days off, he can usually be found making music, enjoying screen time, or out for a walk somewhere near Lake Ontario. Learn more at jayvidyarthi.com

This episode is part ten in an ongoing series about brands and how they influence our identities and drive consumerism. In this episode, we are going to examine brands and their values: their true values and then their marketing values (yes, most big companies have both and you might be surprised by the lack of overlap between those two sets of values).  And specifically, we are going to use Everlane as a conduit for this discussion.  We will go all the way back to Everlane's origin to identify what the brand's values were from the beginning. We will get some additional context around SHEIN's purchase of Everlane. We will learn just how much private equity is controlling fashion at this point.Amanda will debunk that myth that Everlane's sale marks the “end” of sustainability in fashion. And we will explore how "Stickergate" involved emotional branding.Listen to Amanda on Creativity In The Time of Capitalism. Joining me today is 7SEES, here to discuss his research regarding numerous technological developments and the implications for our future. We discuss Trump's recent 6G announcement and how 6G itself plays a major role in these developments, as well as the building out of the new technocratic society under the guise of "freedom cities" that the ruling elitists are openly signaling. We also break down the concern of nanotechnology in this 6G world and what may already be taking place around you.  !function(r,u,m,b,l,e){r._Rumble=b,r[b]||(r[b]=function(){(r[b]._=r[b]._||[]).push(arguments);if(r[b]._.length==1){l=u.createElement(m),e=u.getElementsByTagName(m)[0],l.async=1,l.src="https://rumble.com/embedJS/u2q643"+(arguments[1].video?'.'+arguments[1].video:'')+"/?url="+encodeURIComponent(location.href)+"&args="+encodeURIComponent(JSON.stringify([].slice.apply(arguments))),e.parentNode.insertBefore(l,e)}})}(window, document, "script", "Rumble");   Rumble("play", {"video":"v70smfa","div":"rumble_v70smfa"}); Source Links: (20) 7SEES (@7SEES_) / X 7SEES | Linktree New Tab (21) The Last American Vagabond on X: "“One of Kash Patel's staff threatened my staff with a criminal investigation if we didn't “straighten up & play ball” … they said “we're going to investigate your staff for fraud”” - if true, Kash is “weaponizing gov” or wiling to let a criminal walk. https://t.co/hGMfzFalsz" / X New Tab (20) 7SEES on X: "MIT finally admitting that they can use nano-scale wireless devices to remotely program areas of the brain. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for November 21, 2025 is: bloviate • BLOH-vee-ayt • verb To bloviate is to speak or write in an arrogant tone and with more words than are necessary. // The podcaster tends to bloviate endlessly on topics about which he is not particularly knowledgeable. See the entry > Examples: "While other characters bloviate about their lives, Barbara is a much more internal character, her quietness making her seem all the more an outsider in her hometown." — Kristy Puchko, Mashable.com, 13 June 2025 Did you know? Warren G. Harding is often linked to the word bloviate, but to him the word wasn't insulting; it simply meant "to spend time idly." Harding used the word often in that "hanging around" sense, but during his tenure as the 29th U.S. President (1921-23), he became associated with the "verbose" sense of bloviate, as his speeches tended to be on the long-winded side. Although he is sometimes credited with having coined the word, it's more likely that Harding picked it up from local slang while hanging around with his boyhood buddies in Ohio in the late 1800s. The term likely comes from a combination of the word blow plus the suffix -ate.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 22, 2025 is: frolic • FRAH-lik • verb To frolic is to play and move about happily. // We watched the seals as they frolicked in the harbor. See the entry > Examples: “Harper's consciousness ends up in the body of her mom, Anna. Lily bodyswaps with her soon-to-be grandma Tess. And vice versa. Meaning Lohan and Curtis are playing teens again. While their younger co-stars mug sternly, make jokes about regaining a metabolism ‘the speed of light,' and frolic on electric scooters, Freaky Friday's dynamic duo fling themselves into silly sequences ...” — Kristy Puchko, Mashable, 5 Aug. 2025 Did you know? Frolic is a word rooted in pleasure. Its most common function today is as a verb meaning “to play and move about happily,” as in “children frolicking in the waves,” but it joined the language in the 16th century as an adjective carrying the meaning of its Dutch source vroolijk: “full of fun; merry.” Shakespeare's Puck used it this way in A Midsummer Night's Dream, saying “And we fairies … following darkness like a dream, now are frolic.” Verb use quickly followed, and by the early 17th century the word was also being used as a noun, as in “an evening of fun and frolic.”
