VYS0049 | Machines of Loving Vayse - Vayse to Face with Sequoyah Kennedy v2.0 - Show Notes Imagine, if you will, a world burning as society crumbles (is this stretching you?), in the perpetual, scorched twighlight of a dying planet, the determined foot of a tall figure crushes a skull on a landscape forged of human bones - that foot belongs to Sequoyah Kennedy and the human bones are the vestiges of the common myths and misunderstandings about artificial intelligence... apparently AI's are better than humans at devising effective metaphors in order to convey useful information - and we'll have to hope for their sake that's true. In this episode Hine and Buckley invite back to Vayse one of the most intelligent and articulate humans in the material world, Sequoyah Kennedy. Since the Nonsense Bazaar ended SK has gone deep down the rabbit hole of large language models and has returned to help Hine and Buckley get their heads round what artificial intelligence actually means in 2025 and dismisses some of the ubiquitous confusion which surrounds the topic: is the best use of AI as personal assistant and unpaid artists? Are there demons haunting cyberspace? Do androids dream of electric sheep? and he touches on one of the big questions of our time - are we all in very real danger from this soulless, characterless mockery of human ingenuity with no empathy, no conscience and no soul... or will Elon Musk just finally piss off so that we can live in glorious harmony with our wonderful, wise robot buddies? (recorded 11 March) Thanks to Sequoyah for his patenience in explaining these ocmplex ideas to two middle-aged luddites and thanks, as always to Special K - the man who makes sense of our ramblings, Keith who once again did a sterling job of the show notes. PRESS REVIEW – Tuesday, February 25: Has the bromance been revived? We look at European press reactions to Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump's meeting in Washington. Also: troubled waters for Elon Musk? Tesla sales are in freefall and his curbing of the US federal administration comes under scrutiny. Plus: France's "starchitect" Jean Nouvel is embroiled in an embezzlement scandal. Finally, fancy a summer holiday on Mars? Scientists discover evidence of sandy beaches on the Red Planet. French daily Le Parisien headlines with "Macron, Europe's spokesman in the face of Trump". Emmanuel Macron met with the US president to plead Europe's case on Ukraine. The article says there was a mix of camaraderie and rivalry as the two leaders met in the Oval Office. The Daily Telegraph's front page discusses France's nuclear shield for Europe, explaining how France is ready to use its nuclear deterrent. French fighter jets carrying nuclear weapons could be deployed to Germany, but the move would only be made if the Americans withdrew their forces from the continent. In Italy, La Stampa chooses to go for a science fiction reference by titling their article "The war of the worlds", referring to H. G. Wells' novel of the same name. The article says that the drift between the two parties was evident as they disagreed on how to secure lasting peace in Ukraine.Meanwhile, La Croix looks at the state of electric vehicle giant Tesla, saying that it is suffering from "the provocations of its boss Elon Musk". The article says that both Tesla's sales and popularity are in freefall in a number of countries, due to the billionaire's apparent support of far-right parties, his ruthless cuts to US government operations and his attempts to influence European elections. January sales in France were down 63 percent compared to the same period last year and similar drops can be seen in Germany and Spain.Musk has also come under increasing criticism following what The Washington Post calls his "latest stunt". He issued an ultimatum saying that US government workers would have to resign if they did not submit a five bullet point list of their recent achievements. The article says that the backlash not only comes from Musk critics, but also from within what they call the MAGA universe and the Trump administration. An interesting investigative piece in Libération looks into the French architect Jean Nouvel. The article says that an embezzlement scandal worth €25 million has plagued France's most famous "starchitect", who is best known for having designed the Paris Philharmonic, the Cartier Foundation or the Abu Dhabi Louvre, among others. The scandal is not the first of Nouvel's career, but this time, the article says he could be found guilty of corruption on a "massive" scale. Finally, in more other-worldly news, a Mashable article explains that a Chinese rover has made a discovery on Mars. China's Zhurong rover has found evidence of buried beaches. Using ground-penetrating radar, researchers found evidence that of tides, waves and sand. Unfortunately for holidaymakers, the article explains that it probably would have been pretty chilly. You can catch our press review every morning on France 24 at 7:20am and 9:20am (Paris time), from Monday to Friday.

And that idea of doing something quick and easy and employing whether it's interns or junior level people to just fire out those posts, that's a job for a robot now." - Pete Pachal [12:52 → 13:11] On the Changing Media Landscape: "Media itself is on its own hero's journey and now they're going through these trials and tribulations and they need to pass through them to get to the other side where they will be welcomed with open arms and redeemed if they follow the cycle." - Dan Nestle [13:53 → 14:11] On the Role of AI in Journalism: "The quick, the quick application, I guess a statement I would say about applying AI to journalism is it's like super easy to abuse and harder to use." - Pete Pachal [16:42 → 17:07] On the Future of AI-Generated Content: "I don't know a single journalist now who doesn't at least use perplexity or something like it every now and then, at least. Right. And there's other ways to improve that. Chief among them is essentially using AI with your own data, whether it's your stories or in the case of say, a legal reporter, using it on all these sort of legal documents around a case, which is a relatively easy thing to set up." - Pete Pachal [17:28 → 17:54] On the Future of AI in Media: "I think there's actually a better reason to do this kind of thing. And I think that the reason other orgs may want to start doing this for basically stories they don't have people for but are still relevant to their beat or their area of expertise is to make sure their corpus of content includes those stories." - Pete Pachal [22:32 → 22:50] On the Importance of Human Touch in Writing: "Writing is thinking. And he's right. The act of writing is not separable from the storytelling phase of it. And I think every writer knows this. As you're writing a story and you're, you know, you're figuring out transitions and things, you're like, oh, right, I should say this or I should say that." - Pete Pachal [46:28 → 46:48] Resources and Links Dan Nestle Inquisitive Communications | Website The Trending Communicator | Website Communications Trends from Trending Communicators | Dan Nestle's Substack Dan Nestle | LinkedIn Dan Nestle | Twitter/X Pete Pachal Pete Pachal | LinkedIn The Media Copilot Website The Media Copilot | Substack AI for PR & Media Professionals - Course Pull to Open | Pete's Dr. Who Podcast Timestamped key moments from this episode (as generated by Fireflies.ai)

By the time we reach midlife we've been around the block a few times, learned some things, had experiences and surmounted obstacles. We have life stories that are not only important to us but have the ability to impact others. Stories have a magical way of helping us see ourselves—and the possibilities for our own lives—through the experiences of others.  In this episode, I'm thrilled to dive into the art and power of storytelling with Marsha Shandur, a Storytelling and Persuasive Communication Coach. We unpack how stories connect us on a deeply human level, the fascinating neurological impact storytelling has on our brains, and why vulnerability is the secret sauce to truly powerful narratives. Marsha shares practical insights on how storytelling fosters empathy and connection—whether in personal relationships or professional settings. And we also cover common storytelling missteps and how to avoid them. This conversation is a goldmine of tips and inspiration: How to turn “victim” stories into empowering “hero” stories. The role of emotion and action in crafting memorable stories. Why personal narratives are universal—and how they build confidence for both the teller and the listener. If you've ever doubted the value of your story, this episode will inspire you to embrace it as a tool for connection, empowerment, and transformation. ________ Marsha Shandur, of "Yes Yes Marsha", believes that Storytelling and Ethically Persuasive Communication skills are the keys to instant connection, clear, effective communication, and changing the world for the better. A Storytelling and Persuasive Communication Coach and Trainer, she has taught thousands of executives, entrepreneurs and professionals across the world and has had rave reviews from clients like Meta, Loblaws, Shopify, RBC and the Government of Canada. Before launching her business, she spent 15 years working as a Radio DJ and music supervisor for hit TV shows and films, where she gained a powerful understanding of how to communicate in a way that creates connection, trust, engagement and loyalty. Just two more sleeps until Christmas! Oh, and Happy Festivus for the rest of us! Brian returned from vacation today & we started things off with news about the La Crosse Mayoral race, an officer-involved shooting in Chippewa County, an updated on the WI school shooting from last week, and sad news about a couple of retired K9 Officers. In sports, we recapped this weekend's NFL action & took a look ahead to tonight's MNF matchup between the Saints & Packers. Also, the Badgers got a nice win before the holiday break, an updated look at the College Football Playoff bracket after a few games this past weekend, and Tiger Woods' son is the real deal! We talked about a VERY festive pub in England, and took a look at some of Google's year-end search trends. Great story about CNN's "Hero of the Year", and a Bengals fan who won free pizza for everyone in the stadium during yesterday's game against the Browns. Mashable.com put together a list of the top Christmas horror movies of all time, and even though 2nd Floor Sarah is out, we hooked you up with a few things going on in the area this week. During today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a drone show that went horribly wrong, a bunch of skiers in Colorado that got stuck on a lift, a contractor in Maine who wanted just one more spin on the slot machine before being arrested, and apparently…people are putting glitter in their pickles. It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Mehdi Hasan, founder, CEO, and editor-in-chief of the new media company Zeteo, to discuss the biggest stories of the week and his new venture. First, Sam & Emma check in on Trump's trial, where people are concerned about how he keeps falling asleep. But that doesn't matter to South Carolina diner patrons* (*Ainsley Earhardt's friends and family), including former South Carolina State Rep. Chip Huggins, who thinks Trump is being crucified in court. It also doesn't apply to NewsMax's Carl Higbie, who is ecstatic to see how much energy Trump is showing by taking a car from lower Manhattan to Trump Tower on 5th Avenue. Then Mehdi joins Sam and Emma, and they discuss how the propaganda in support of Israel appearing on news and social media is the greatest since the entire media machine threw itself behind the Iraq War in the early 2000's. They discuss President Biden's reactions to the campus protests, the weaponization of the word "democracy", the baffling decision by Senate Majority Leader Schumer to reportedly partner with Speaker Johnson to invite Netanyahu to address Congress, and also check out Sen. Bernie Sanders explaining why Israel may end up being President Biden's own version of Vietnam. And in the Fun Half, the MR Crew check out Joe Rogan decrying out of control wokeness infiltrating college campuses, a respected Dartmouth history professor, Annelise Orleck, being forcibly arrested by police at a campus protest, Mehdi Hasan expertly dressing down Piers Morgan in a debate over the usage of the word "Intifada", and Donald Trump pretending like he doesn't know who RFK Jr. is when asked about him, even though they met at Trump Tower in 2016, and Trump is worried he's going to siphon votes away from him in November. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Tyler Vasseur, letter carrier and shop steward in the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), Branch 9, to discuss his recent piece in Labor Notes entitled "Momentum for Open Bargaining Grows in the Letter Carriers." Then, Sam speaks with David Dayen, executive editor at the American Prospect, to discuss his recent piece outlining the new FTC rule regarding non-compete clauses, co-authored with Luke Goldstein. First, Sam runs through updates on escalating violence by police and Zionists against anti-war protesters, Netanyahu's imminent invasion of Rafah, the Federal Reserve, Biden drug policy, state abortion bans, New York's special election for Congress, Johnson and Johnson's talc settlement, and labor rights, before watching Mike Johnson and Marjorie Taylor Greene trade shots ahead of a potential motion to vacate the Speakership. Tyler Vasseur then joined, first outlining NALC's union structure and role as one of four postal unions, before exploring the progressive division between the unions – including the desynchronization of their contracts –  under the US' shift into neoliberalism at the end of the 20th Century. Expanding on this, Vasseur explores the concept of “open bargaining,” and what it would mean in terms of activating and mobilizing NALC's base of workers, as well as creating a much more transparent negotiating process. After walking through the major forces driving NALC members' attempt at reform, and touching on the major roles of the US pre-funding mandate for the USPS and the 2008 Financial crisis in crippling industry wages, Tyler wraps up with the inspiring factor of the ongoing union renaissance in the US, and how this project has already begun to reshape organizing efforts within NALC. David Dayen and Sam then look to the absurd evolution of the “non-compete” contract clause, first popularized as a tool to prevent the spread of company secrets among executives, and now used to constrain some 30 million workers in industries from dog grooming to fast food. After expanding on the expansive chunk of our economy crippled by non-compete clauses, David walks us through the ongoing legal battle to overturn the bipartisan ban, how the legacy of Antonin Scalia looms large over this topic, and why the Supreme Court's bogus “Major Questions” Doctrine is central to these arguments. After expanding on the likely evolution of this court battle, Dayen wraps up with a brief update on Live Nation's attempt to court DC insiders with some help from the free (but evidently not priceless) press. And in the Fun Half: Sam parses through yesterday's mass escalation of violence against anti-war student protesters on college campuses across the US, with the NYPD sending a SWAT team to infiltrate the Student occupation of Harold Hall, and police in LA allowing a pro-Israel violent mob assault UCLA protesters, also expanding on the absurd and constant attempts to completely misrepresent these campus protests and the student activists behind them. Jose from Houston calls in with some updates on union business in the transport industry, Marcus from Huntington Beach explores the MAGA takeover of his local government and how to push back, Charlie Kirk shames Zionists for not thinking their grand Jewish conspiracy would come back around to hurt them, and Cory from Florida shares his experiences with the constraints of non-compete clauses. Dave Rubin floats his theory on the jihadists behind public health, and Paul Bet David admonishes a Columbia Student for not knowing NYU's investment portfolio, in his leadup to platforming George Soros conspiracy, plus, your calls and IMs!
