Gregg Cunningham is the Executive Director of the Centre of Bio-Ethical Reform based in California, USA. Greg is a former two-term Member of The Pennsylvania House of Representatives where he introduced legislation which ended public funding for abortion. He was also a prime sponsor of the Abortion Control Act. He is a retired U.S. Air Force Reserve Colonel with six years of active duty service and twenty-five years in the ready reserve. He is also a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War. Read Gregg's full bio here. In this guest session looking at the prophets, Greg steers us through Abraham Heschel's classic work of the same title. We wanted to explore something of Heschel at this stage because of the importance he's made in our own understanding about the gift of prophecy in the Old and New Testaments. Nick's book, Body Zero, gives a whole chapter to one of Heschel's main insights - divine pathos.Here's what Heschel says in his opening chapter,"Indeed, the sort of crimes and even the amount of delinquency that fill the prophets of Israel with dismay do not go beyond that which we regard as normal, as typical ingredients of social dynamics . To us a single act of injustice--cheating in business, exploitation of the poor - is slight; to the prophets, a disaster.
