Presented by Lauren Stibgen Do you acknowledge God when you celebrate success at work? Pointing to God's favor in your work and boldly proclaiming your faith at work can be another way to live on mission in your day to day like my friend Cathi. Cathi is a Sr. National Director for Childhelp. Since 1959, Childhelp has saved and transformed the lives of more than 12 million children suffering from abuse and neglect. Cathi's role is to raise the vital funds for these children. She is truly serving the least of these. For Cathi, tragedy and grief transformed her work into a mission to share Jesus wherever she goes, even amidst profound sorrow. Two years ago, she tragically lost her son Ben to a Fentanyl overdose on the streets of Los Angeles. This devastating loss shattered her world and propelled her into a deep prayer life, considering more about what Jesus wanted her to do. Cathi finds solace in sharing her faith, particularly with those who are struggling or marginalized. She spends a great deal of her time with the homeless and drug addicts. To Cathi, missional living is about intentionally aligning her life with a purpose that revolves around serving others. Working at Childhelp allows her the privilege to directly engage with children and families in need. She states, “As a follower of Christ, it's imperative that I serve the least of these, making a tangible difference for God's kingdom.” Throughout her career, she has made it a point to acknowledge God's role in her successes openly. Whether securing major donations or interacting with colleagues, she gives all credit to Jesus. Recently, during an all-staff meeting, the chief of staff highlighted this commitment, affirming her dedication to glorifying God in all she does. Cathi has initiated a Friday morning prayer session after their team meetings for her colleagues. This time has become a sacred space where they seek God's guidance and blessings for their work at Childhelp. She firmly believes God opens doors, provides wisdom, and brings the right people to support our mission of helping abused children. Psalm 139:1-24 holds special significance for Cathi. It's a chapter she memorized with her sons when they were young, and it remains a source of comfort and strength. As she reflects on her journey, she finds assurance in every word of this Psalm, knowing God intimately knows when she sits down and when she rises. Cathi knows God was with her boy when he took his last breath and is with her today in everything she does!

In a harrowing case that has sent shockwaves through the community, Shanda Vander Ark, a Michigan woman, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her 15-year-old son, Timothy Ferguson, who tragically died in July 2022. Vander Ark, convicted of murder in December, received her life sentence on Tuesday, accompanied by an additional 50-to-100-year sentence for child abuse, according to court records. Timothy Ferguson's death left investigators and prosecutors stunned, as he was found to weigh a mere 69 pounds at the time of his passing, displaying clear signs of malnutrition and hypothermia. The distressing details of the case have deeply affected those involved, particularly the presiding judge, Matthew Kacel, who did not mince words during Vander Ark's sentencing. “You intentionally and systematically tortured this child,” Judge Kacel declared during the sentencing, as reported by WOOD. “Let's call it what it is. It's torture. You tortured this child.” The case garnered national attention when, during her trial, Vander Ark testified and was shown pictures of Timothy's emaciated body. A video posted on Court TV captured a disturbing moment when she repeatedly appeared to vomit in response to the graphic images, further highlighting the severity of the situation. The accusations against Vander Ark, as cited by CBS News and prosecutors, depict a disturbing pattern of abuse inflicted upon her son. She was accused of subjecting Timothy to various forms of torment, including forcing him to consume hot sauce, immersing him in ice baths, and depriving him of access to the refrigerator and cabinets, leading to his severe malnutrition. The sentencing of Shanda Vander Ark serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable children from abuse and neglect. The case has raised questions about child welfare and the need for vigilance in identifying and reporting instances of child abuse. Child advocacy groups and concerned citizens have urged individuals to be proactive in reporting suspected cases of child abuse to the appropriate authorities, emphasizing the significance of early intervention to prevent such tragic outcomes. As the community grapples with the profound tragedy of Timothy Ferguson's death, many hope that this case will prompt a broader discussion on child welfare, parental responsibility, and the crucial role that individuals and institutions play in safeguarding the well-being of children. For those seeking more information and resources related to child abuse prevention, organizations like Childhelp (www.childhelp.org) offer support and guidance to those in need. It is crucial to recognize the signs of child abuse and take action to protect the most vulnerable members of society from harm. In the wake of this heart-wrenching case, the message is clear: society must remain vigilant in its commitment to safeguarding children and ensuring their safety and well-being. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Dr. Lois Lee, Founder & President, “Children of the Night”, about child sex trafficking About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Dr. Lois Lee, has dedicated her entire career to rescuing and protecting victims of child sex trafficking. She is the founder and President of a groundbreaking and vitally important non-profit organization called Children of the Night, which was the first and still one of very few organizations in the world, devoted to the development of comprehensive specialized programs and education, for child sex trafficking victims, who need critical intervention to break away from the abuse they've suffered, and have a chance to live a safe, happy, successful life. Since its creation in 1979, Children of the Night has operated a variety of programs for America's prostituted children, including a 24-hour toll-free nationwide hotline, a drop-in center in Los Angeles, street programs throughout the Western United States, and a world-class shelter home in California where over 3,000 children have lived and received comprehensive case management and onsite schooling. Since 1979, Children of the Night has rescued over 10,000 American children from prostitution, which makes this organization the most prominent and successful anti-child sex trafficking program in the world. Our guest is the world's leading expert in rescuing child sex trafficking victims. She holds a PhD in Sociology and Anthropology and is a lawyer and active member of the California State Bar. She has trained thousands of law enforcement personnel and is frequently called upon to provide expert testimony in high profile prosecutions of child sex traffickers. Her pioneering work with child sex trafficking victims has been a blueprint for academics, researchers, law enforcement, social service providers and legislators throughout the world. She's received many prestigious awards for her groundbreaking work, most notably the President's Volunteer Action Award, presented to her by President Ronald Reagan, the Children's Friend Award from Childhelp, the Women's Achievement Award from the Dashew International Center for Students and Scholars at UCLA, the “Award of Appreciation” from The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the National Caring Award. And her portrait hangs in the Frederick Douglass Museum and Hall of Fame for Caring Americans in Washington, D.C.. Our guest has been profiled on the CBS TV show, “60 Minutes”, and her life was portrayed in a 1985 TV movie entitled “Children of the Night,” starring Kathleen Quinlan. Decatur, Alabama police get a call for a well check on 36-year-old Cindy Crow. WAFF reports a family member believed Crow to be 8-months pregnant. Crow, however, looked like she had lost a lot of weight, overnight. The family member, a sister, told police that she had seen Crow leaving her home, with a large, white trash bag in the back floorboard of her car. In the home, bloody feminine products were found in the trash. Police contacted Crow at work, where she agreed to go to the hospital to prove that she was not pregnant. While waiting for the test results, Crow gave an officer consent to search her cell phone, where he found the app LIFE360. This allowed the detective to trace the route Cindy Crow took when she left her home with the white trash bag. Using information garnered from the LIFE360 app, detectives found a location with a dumpster, Wally World Mini-Mart. Investigators searched of the inside of the dumpster and found the trash bag containing the deceased body of a newborn baby girl. It was stuffed in the bottom of the dumpster under several other large bags of trash. Cindy Crow was arrested and so far is charged with abuse of a corpse. In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the spirit of toxic masculinity that has invaded the church - something at the forefront of sexual abuse scandals and stories of domineering male leadership. As Dr. White said, he's truly sickened by this. Episode Links An earlier podcast episode - CCP8: On Purity Culture - explored how the church sometimes tries to excuse sexual abuse within its walls by creating a caricature of men who are hopelessly ruled by their sexual desires, therefore attempting to put the blame for the incidents on the women involved. This spirit of toxic masculinity can also move outside the church and into the home, particularly when it comes to the idea of submission in marriage. Dr. White explored the deeper meaning of the words found in Ephesians 5, particularly in verse 21 that says: “… submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” The idea is that husband and wife are to submit to one another. There are a number of excellent series that Dr. White has delivered at Mecklenburg Community Church in the area of marriage and family. You can find all of those messages HERE. One series that we want to highlight that is particularly relevant to today's topic was called #MeToo.” While it talked about the cultural implications of the #MeToo movement, it also has an installment called #HomeToo that talks about this need for husbands to also submit to their wives. For information on some of the statistics and data shared during this episode, check out the following resources: Paul J. Wright, “Pornography Consumption and Extramarital Sex Attitudes Among Married U.S. Adults: Longitudinal Replication,” ResearchGate; “How Many Women Watch Porn?” Fight the New Drug; “Child Abuse Statistics,” Child Help; and “Child Maltreatment Report 2021,” Children's Bureau. Finally, several podcasts would be worth going back to listen to as they relate to today's conversation. The recent episode “CCP67: On the Secrets of Hillsong and the Duggars” touched on male toxicity within both the church and the home. The episode “CCP21: On Gender” looks at the idea of gender stereotypes and how these might affect what it means to be a godly man. If we want a full picture of a godly man and how he is called to treat women, we should look no further than Jesus. He leveled the sexual playing field by uplifting the role of women in culture. This is being fleshed out well in the series The Chosen, and you can listen to the podcast “CCP54: On ‘The Chosen'” for more about that series. For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday.
A terrifying find by a Texas man cutting grass: a suitcase with baby clothes, pampers, and the remains of a little girl, inside. Forensic testing identifies the girl as 2 to 5-years-old. The tot's body is underdeveloped, and medical supplies with the body indicated she suffered from a serious medical condition. Tonight's special guest is Daphne Young from Scottsdale, Arizona, the Chief Communications Officer of Childhelp. Now celebrating it's 40th anniversary, Childhood features a hotline, 1-800-4-A-CHILD, that offers crisis intervention, information, and referrals to thousands of emergency, social service, and support resources. All contacts are confidential. There are also individual state-by-state hotlines to call, too. As Childhelp says, "Reporting child abuse can be scary. If you are a witness to or a victim of child abuse there is a huge benefit to making the report yourself. Being able to tell your story first hand gives the child care worker much better information than if it came from someone not involved. Your story could save a life." And they go on, "Our counselors are available to talk through child abuse situations if you have questions or need additional support. We can also help research additional resources that may be available to you." Read the history of Childhelp and its founders, Sara O'Meara and Yvonne Fedderson. The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline is dedicated to the prevention of child abuse. It is primarily funded by individuals and companies, and has given assistance to more than 2 million help seekers. In the U.S. and Canada, the hotline is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with professional crisis counselors who, through interpreters, provide assistance in over 170 languages. The hotline offers crisis intervention, information, and referrals to thousands of emergency, social service, and support resources. All contacts are confidential. As they say, "Bottom line, we are here to answer the call."

Listen to a new episode of YNS Live with NFL Thread recorded live on Fireside with hosts Juliet Hahn and Cynthia Zordich, featuring Special Guest Jennifer Archuleta. Growing up in a large family in Ohio, Jennifer was always surrounded by love and support. But at 18, she made the bold decision to leave her family and move out west to chase her dreams of living by the beach and experiencing life in the big city. Arriving in Los Angeles wasn't easy; she faced financial and emotional struggles. But as they say, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Jennifer eventually found her footing as a freelance makeup artist, working on movie sets. A chance encounter at the Playboy Mansion changed her life. While working as an assistant to a makeup artist, Jennifer caught the eye of Hugh Hefner, which led her to a career in modeling. Although she never imagined herself in that world, she embraced the opportunity. In 2008, Jennifer retired from modeling to focus on her growing family. Now, she's happily married to former NFL safety Adam Archuleta and currently a commentator for CBS. They have been together for over 18 years and have three beautiful children, five dogs, and two tortoises. Over the years, Jennifer has discovered a deep passion for helping others. She has been a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for foster children and volunteered for Childhelp for the last eight years. As a survivor of childhood trauma herself, it's important for her to give back to those in need. In her free time, Jennifer enjoys participating in Spartan races, going to the shooting range, working out, attending church, cooking, and spending quality time with her family. Her life philosophy, inspired by Marilyn Monroe, is: "Nothing lasts forever, so live it up, drink it down, laugh it off, avoid the drama, take chances & never have regrets, because at one point everything you did was exactly what you wanted." In this week's episode of Fostering Change Rob Scheer talks with Jen Lilley. In 2007, Lilley married Jason Wayne. In 2016, Lilley and her husband became foster parents through the organization, Childhelp. In June 2019, Lilley and Wayne adopted their two foster sons and in July 2019, she gave birth to a daughter. And just 2 months ago in May, she gave birth to another daughter!A star on both the silver and small screens, including the Academy Award-winning film THE ARTIST, NBC's iconic daytime series “Days of Our Lives,” ABC's “General Hospital,” and a regular leading lady on the Hallmark Channel and GAC, actress/singer/philanthropist Jen Lilley has tackled countless roles throughout her illustrious career. Jen Lilley's creative prowess does not end when the director yells cut, she is also a singer and songwriter. Her music exudes the same sultry ferocity of Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton, with Phil Spector's wall of sound treatment via Rosie Danvers and her 50-piece orchestra. AXS.com said, “Lilley conjures up the sound of a 1960s girl group and embodies the same essence of Amy Winehouse. She takes a nostalgic twist on a modern song that will remind you of what classic music sounds like and have you longing for the days of Motown." When Jen Lilley is not busy in front of a camera, or perfecting her vocals in studio, she can be found hosting her podcast, "Fostering Hope with Jen Lilley" to demystify the foster care system and encourage loving people to get involved in the cause. She is a true champion for charities. In addition to donating 100% of her music profits to create a neighborhood model of safe loving foster homes, she co-founded Christmas is Not Cancelled, Inc.: A marketing company that raises awareness and funds for amazing causes and nonprofits while giving participants the chance to win huge prizes! The next Christmas is Not Cancelled event is coming up THIS MONTH. In fact, Comfort Cases is partnering with Jen and her team for a "Christmas is Not Cancelled Packing Party" at the end of July. We will be packing up 2022 backpacks filled with school supplies to deliver to students in need in the Washington, DC Metro area. As a teenager, Jen garnered the National Educators Award for her work in Guatemala. She is known for advocating children's rights and supports charities that focus on protecting children against physical and sexual abuse, human trafficking, and the world water crisis. Truly selfless, she is a foster and adoptive parent herself and is a celebrity ambassador for the child abuse and treatment organization Child help, Project Orphans, ECPAT, Olive Crest, The Dave Thomas Foundation, The Thirst Project, The Los Angeles Mission, Oneless, A21, Children of the Night, and the Innocent Justice Foundation.
