Var kom den svenske poliskonstapeln ifrån och vart tog han vägen? Thomas Steinfeld är dagens essäist. Åsikter som uttrycks är skribentens egna.Om någon idag säger Bengt Berg så går kanske tankarna först och främst till den värmländske poeten. Men under första halvan av 1900-talet fanns en Bengt Berg hemmahörande i Hallstorp utanför Kalmar samt senare också på godset Eriksberg i Blekinge – som var en internationell berömdhet. Han var författare, fotograf och filmare och ägnade sitt liv åt att dokumentera djurens liv. Till allmän beundran kom han dem så nära som ingen annan på hans tid – havsörnen till exempel, eller träskonäbben, eller grågåsen. Störst var hans rykte i Tyskland, där han under trettio- och fyrtiotalen, vid sidan av Sven Hedin och Zara Leander, var den mest berömde svensken över huvud taget. Och liksom Hedin hyste också Bengt Berg stora och stadiga sympatier för den tyska fascismen. Så täta blev förbindelserna till ledande nationalsocialister som Heinrich Himmler och Hermann Göring att Säkerhetspolisen i november 1939 satte fågelskådaren under bevakning. Det finns en akt om Bengt Berg i Riksarkivet, där vissa delar är sekretessbelagda. I de omaskade passagerna blir man upplyst om att Säkerhetspolisen registrerade hans brev och telefonsamtal, särskilt de som kom från utlandet. Dessutom fick en poliskonstapel från Kalmar i uppdrag att hålla ett öga på den misstänkte, även om konstapeln meddelade att han ”personligen kände Berg och var övertygad om att denne ej hade något politiskt fuffens för sig”. Men Konstapeln hörde sig för bland folk i närheten av doktor Berg. Och visserligen fick han höra intressanta saker: Berg hade frågat de lokala fiskarna om vattendjupet i skärgården, han hade samlat uppgifter om kustbefästningarnas styrka, han hade lärt sig om kanonernas kaliber. Under ”fågelskyddets täckmantel”, som det heter i akten, hade han agerat som en spion som skulle förbereda en tysk landstigning i Blekinge. Konstapeln antecknade. Men som framgår i säkerhetspolisens akt var han inte främst intresserad av det militära. Polismannen följde den misstänktes utomäktenskapliga äventyr. Nyfikenheten gällde framför allt en kvinna från arbetsförmedlingen i Kalmar, ägarinnan till en pälskappa som hon enligt konstapeln knappast hade råd med. Yrket konstapel har en lång historia. Det finns redan i den romerska antiken, som comes stabuli, officeraren som höll uppsikt över hästarna. Sedan dess spökar han runt i historien, fram till att han – först i England, sedan också i andra europeiska länder – blev en polisman, oftast av lägre grad. Som sådan är han en figur från en övergångstid. Han uppstår med den liberala rättsstatens utveckling, och han försvinner i samma tid som yrket blir en statlig tjänst. En polisman ingår i en nationell myndighet; en konstapel däremot var en medborgare som bland annat utförde vissa statliga uppgifter. Framför allt på landsbygden kunde en konstapel anlitas för att driva in skatter, kontrollera främlingar eller avbryta ett slagsmål i krogen.Fram till långt in på 1800-talet arbetade en konstapel ofta bara på deltid. Och eftersom han skulle kunna gå tillbaka till sina andra uppgifter – att vara lärare, krämare eller, ofta, hemvärnsman – fick han smidigt växla från rollen som lagman till vanlig granne. Och även när yrket blev en heltidssysselsättning i början av 1900-talet, behöll konstapeln sin fasta förankring bland folket – så som konstapeln i Kalmar. Fördelen med konstapeln var att han kände till de lokala förhållandena, att han hade träffat de misstänkta redan när de var barn, att han var förtrogen med deras vanor och vägar. Nackdelen var att han inte hade råd att lämna den lokala gemenskapen för att enbart gå i lagens ärenden.Det tog alltså tid att frigöra konstapeln från resten av samhället, och eftersom det inte fanns några allmängiltiga föreställningar om vad som var ett brott, så gällde framför allt lokala normer – med följden att små illdåd som hade begåtts av fattigt eller kringdrivande folk ofta följdes av drastiska straff, medan förmögna och välkända medborgare kunde gå fria efter mycket värre förbrytelser. Också misstänksamheten måste professionaliseras, så att den kunde riktas mot var och en, utan respekt för vare sig makt eller rikedom. Därför förutsatte det nya yrket en statlig tjänst med en egen utbildning. Av samma anledning ´är det i staden som polismannen föds – inte på landsbygden.Övergången mellan den gamla, personliga ordningen till en allmän ordningsmakt med långtgående befogenheter tog mer än hundra år, fram till inrättandet av en enhetlig statlig myndighet under 1960-talet. Under mellantiden prövades många åtgärder för att jämna ut motsättningen mellan konstapelns brist på tillförlitlighet och nödvändigheten i att få kontroll över hela samhället. I Europa – framför allt i städernas mörka kvarter, där makten var svag och livet farligt – gjorde man som i Vilda västern: När en brottsling skulle gripas hängde man upp affischer med utlovade belöningar. Problemet blev förstås att angivaren, liksom förbrytaren, ofta kom från samma miljö – så att man aldrig kunde veta om belöningen gick till en ännu större bov.Polisens professionalisering medförde ett nytt problem och bevarade ett gammalt : För det första försvann, så klart, polismannens förtrogenhet med de lokala förhållandena. För det andra undkom man fortfarande inte svårigheterna att ta itu med överklassen. En rättsstat tillåter ingen olikbehandling. De flesta polismän kommer dock från en enkel bakgrund. Konstapeln kunde vika sig för makten. Den moderna polisen får i bästa fall blunda. I kriminalromanerna finns en lösning: privatdetektiven, som med största möjliga diskretion ger sig i kast med de mest komplicerade fallen. Men varken Kalmar eller Karlshamn förfogade över en kriminalitet stor nog för att livnära en professionell snok.I fallet Bengt Berg var konstapeln förmodligen den enda möjligheten att ta itu med en europeisk celebritet på landsbygden, som misstänktes vara förrädare. Som tur var gick den besvärliga situationen till slut över – genom att det ”Tredje riket” försvann. När bevakningen av Bengt Berg avslutades författade Säkerhetspolisen en sammanställning som avslutas med följande mening: ”Som slutomdöme torde kunna antagas, att Berg är (varit) tyskorienterad, men synes icke ha företagit någon illegal handling – i varje fall icke känd sådan.” Den sista meningen får man läsa långsamt. Den döljer en avgrund av möjligheter.

Himmler, Höß, Speer – tausende hochrangige Funktionäre des Nazi-Regimes flüchteten sich kurz vor Kriegsende vor 81 Jahren ins damals noch unbesetzte Flensburg. Viele tauchten mit Hilfe örtlicher Polizeikräfte unter oder setzten sich über die „Rattenlinie Nord“ ins Ausland ab. Acht von ihnen bildeten vom 2. bis zum 23. Mai '45 unter der Leitung von Großadmiral Karl Dönitz in der Marineschule Mürwik eine „geschäftsführende Reichsregierung“. Die in Flensburg geborene Politikwissenschaftlerin Svenja Falk hat die heute weitgehend unbeachteten drei Wochen von Flensburg minutiös recherchiert und ist dabei auf viele Bekannte gestoßen, die sich in jenen Tagen in Flensburg aufhielten: Siegfried Unseld (später Verleger), Beate Uhse (später Erotik-Unternehmerin), Ian Fleming (später Bond-Erfinder), Wolfgang Neuss (später Kabarettist) u.v.a. Durante doce años, la Gestapo fue el instrumento más temido del régimen nazi. Nacida en 1933 bajo el mando de Hermann Göring y más tarde controlada por Heinrich Himmler, la policía secreta del Estado se convirtió en la columna vertebral del terror. Su objetivo era claro: eliminar cualquier forma de oposición al Tercer Reich. No había leyes, ni juicios, ni derechos. Bastaba una sospecha o una denuncia anónima para desaparecer en la oscuridad de un interrogatorio o un campo de concentración. El poder de la Gestapo no se basaba solo en su brutalidad, sino en su capacidad para infiltrarse en cada rincón de la vida alemana. Funcionarios, vecinos e incluso familiares se convertían en informantes, creando una atmósfera de desconfianza total. El miedo era su mayor arma. La gente aprendió a callar, a no mirar demasiado, a no preguntar nunca. Así se mantuvo el control de millones de personas sin necesidad de ejércitos en las calles: bastaba la sensación constante de ser observado. Con el paso de los años, la Gestapo extendió su influencia más allá de las fronteras de Alemania. En los territorios ocupados, organizó deportaciones masivas, persiguió a la resistencia y coordinó con las SS la identificación de judíos y opositores. Su burocracia del horror funcionaba con precisión alemana: fichas, listas, informes y trenes. Todo un sistema diseñado para borrar vidas en nombre de la obediencia y la eficiencia. Cuando el Reich se derrumbó en 1945, muchos agentes de la Gestapo intentaron desaparecer entre la población. Algunos fueron juzgados, otros escaparon. Pero su legado no se desvaneció. La Gestapo no solo dominó Alemania durante doce años; moldeó la mente de toda una nación, demostrando que el miedo, cuando se institucionaliza, puede ser más poderoso que cualquier ejército.

Under hans ledning växte SS explosionsartat och blev en politisk maktfaktor som gav honom stort handlingsutrymme. År 1933 var han med och etablerade koncentrationslägret Dachau, som kom att fungera som ett slags modell för lägersystemet.Redan 1935 initierade Himmler organisationen Ahnenerbe, vars uppgift var att med skenbart “vetenskapliga” metoder ta fram belägg för germanernas påstått ärofyllda förflutna och rasmässiga överlägsenhet. Forskning och propaganda flätades samman för att legitimera erövringskrig och avhumanisering av judar och andra grupper som nazisterna stämplade som mindervärdiga.I Himmlers föreställningsvärld utgjorde Sverige ett kärnland för den “germanska rasen”. Därför fick landet en roll i hans visioner om ett framtida storgermanskt maktblock i Nord- och Västeuropa. För att omsätta idéerna i praktik försökte SS bygga nätverk i Sverige. Enligt Westberg handlade det om påverkan, värvning och kontakter i miljöer som polis, läkarkår, jordbrukets intresseorganisationer och bland svenska frivilliga till Waffen-SS. Det var då Folke Bernadotte – vice ordförande i Röda Korset – trädde in som koordinator.Den första expeditionen startade redan tidigt 1945 med siktet mot att hämta svenskfödda kvinnor och barn i Tyskland — ett första steg mot det som kom att bli den större Vita bussarna‑aktionen. I praktiken var det konvojer med totalt 36 specialmålade vita bussar samt lastbilar, ambulanser och personbilar körde över hela Tyskland för att främst rädda utmärglade norska och danska koncentrationslägerfångar.Att just Röda Korset fick ansvaret var både praktiskt och principiellt: organisationen hade internationella kontakter, erfarenhet av humanitärt arbete och uppfattades som neutral — vilket var avgörande i ett krig där militära operationer var riskfyllda och politiskt känsliga.Genom att använda sig av militära resurser från svenska staten – fordon, personal och logistik – kunde Röda Korset genomföra en humanitär operation med tydliga skyltar (vita bussar med röda kors och svenska flaggor) för att signalera att det inte rörde sig om militära mål.Folke Bernadotte spelade en huvudroll i att förhandlingarna med Heinrich Himmler, chefen för SS. I februari 1945 reste Bernadotte till Berlin och inledde samtal med tyska myndigheter — bakom Hitlers rygg. Målet var att få tillstånd att transportera skandinaviska fångar ur lägren. First of all, President Trump has seemingly accomplished something many thought near impossible, the bringing of peace, the end to the war between Israel and Hamas, and the release of the hostages which would be amazing if it happens. Netanyahu was so euphoric he posted a meme nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, with the peace deal coming a day before the announcement of the 2025 Nobel Prize Winners. But…upon closer inspection, this peace deal was made from a position of weakness, not of strength, and the real winner right now would seem to be Hamas.“For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.” Jeremiah 8:11 (KJB)On this episode of the Prophecy News Podcast, one of the things that strikes a sour note with me about the Trump Peace Plan is that Israel must release 41 Palestinian prisoners for every one of the Israeli hostages currently held by Hamas. Another thing that is a little unbelievable is that Hamas is even allowed to be a part of the negotiating of the terms of the peace process. In WWII, when it was clear that Germany could not win the war and Heinrich Himmler attempted to bargain favorable terms for the Nazis with the Allies, he was turned down flat. The only ‘offer' America would accept was complete and total surrender. A war is not over until one side surrenders. That's how you ‘negotiate' peace, but that's not what Trump has created. Nous sommes le 18 février 1937, à Bad Tölz, en Bavière. Dans un discours prononcé devant des officiers SS, Heinrich Himmler explique le danger que représente, à ses yeux, l'homosexualité pour la nation allemande. Il dit : « Si j'admets qu'il y a un à deux millions d'homosexuels, cela signifie que 7 à 8% ou 10% des individus de sexe masculin sont homosexuels. Et si la situation ne change pas, cela signifie que notre peuple sera anéanti par cette maladie contagieuse. (…) L'homosexuel est naturellement un objet idéal de pression, d'abord parce qu'il est lui-même passible de sanctions, deuxièmement parce que c'est un type malléable, et troisièmement parce qu'il est veule et dépourvu de toute volonté. (…) Aujourd'hui encore, il se présente tous les mois un cas d'homosexualité dans la SS (... ) J'ai donc décidé la chose suivante : dans tous les cas, ces individus seront officiellement dégradés, exclus de la SS et traduits devant un tribunal. Après avoir purgé la peine infligée par le tribunal, ils seront internés sur mon ordre dans un camp de concentration et abattus pendant une « tentative d'évasion ». (…) J'espère ainsi extirper ces gens de la SS - jusqu'au dernier. Je veux préserver le sang noble que nous recevons dans notre organisation et l'œuvre d'assainissement racial que nous poursuivons pour l'Allemagne. » Himmler conclut ainsi : « Messieurs, les égarements sexuels provoquent les choses les plus extravagantes que l'on puisse imaginer. Dire que nous nous conduisons comme des animaux serait insulter les animaux. Car les animaux ne pratiquent pas ce genre de choses. Une vie sexuelle normale constitue donc un problème vital pour tous les peuples". Selon les estimations, près de 100 000 homosexuels ont été fichés par le régime nazi ; 50 000 environ ont l'objet d'une condamnation ; entre 5 000 et 15 000 ont envoyés en camp de concentration, où la plupart ont péri. Bajo el mando del socialista Juan Negrín jóvenes militantes con poderes ilimitados utilizaron la tortura física y mental para extraer información. Julius Ruiz presenta en el podcast de historia de Libertad Digital, Desmemoria Histórica, su libro La guerra sucia. La República contra la quinta columna (Espasa, 2025). En él se detalla cómo actuaron y quiénes fueron los agentes secretos republicanos, "una generación de jóvenes militantes y revolucionarios" que a las órdenes del PSOE llevaron a cabo una brutal depuración durante la Guerra Civil. Su objetivo fue "una depuración profunda de la sociedad", un "juego de suma cero" contra los señalados como "fascistas". Estos socialistas llevaron a cabo "torturas de forma sistemática" porque "los fines justificaron los medios". El autor de El terror rojo o Paracuellos, una verdad incómoda, cuenta que "no fueron grupos de incontrolados", sino que "llevaban uniforme y placas y estaban "a sueldo del Estado"; fue "una policía secreta estatal". Muchas veces hemos atribuido a grupos izquierdistas, anarquistas y sindicalistas la violencia en retaguardia. El gran estudio de este profesor aclara que hubo un partido responsable de las checas y de la tortura y represión arbitraria durante la Guerra Civil: el PSOE. Varias organizaciones convergieron en el SIM, el Servicio de Investigación Militar creado en agosto de 1937 por Indalecio Prieto. El SIM fue una agencia de contraespionaje que, escribe Julius Ruiz, "se impregnó en todos sus niveles de una especie de cultura de la brutalidad". En 1938 era la "institución más poderosa de la zona republicana" a las órdenes del presidente del gobierno republicano, Juan Negrín. Estos jóvenes militantes buscaron sin piedad al enemigo interno, tanto a los tildados de "fascistas" como a los "antifascistas tachados de trotskistas por sus colegas de izquierdas". Dice en la entrevista: "Franco y Trotsky unidos contra el Frente Popular". El autor valora la influencia soviética en el bando revolucionario: "El nombre Alexandr Orlov es más famoso que el de ninguno de los policías secretos españoles citados en el presente libro", dice. Dicha fama ha eclipsado la importancia de los grupos españoles. Este nuevo trabajo, de más de novecientas páginas, le ha llevado "diez años de investigación y dos de escritura" porque "al final de la guerra los agentes republicanos quemaron los archivos centrales". Es decir, intentaron echar tierra sobre un sinfín de víctimas: "En la primavera de 1938, sólo en Cataluña, había diez mil presos".Las checas que asombraron a Himmler El libro recoge casi al final una anécdota, la visita, en octubre de 1940, del líder del partido nazi Heinrich Himmler a las celdas psicotécnicas de Barcelona, en concreto a la checa de Vallmajor. Quedó asombrado cuando vio estos centros de tortura ideados por el SIM: "Sus anfitriones franquistas quisieron aprovecharla al máximo (la visita de Himmler) para que supiera más sobre la "barbarie roja" antes de emprender su viaje de regreso al Tercer Reich. Así que, tras una cena de gala en el Palacio Municipal, Luis Orgaz, Capitán General de la Cuarta Región Militar, acompañado de otras ilustres autoridades regionales franquistas se llevó al nazi y a su séquito a Vallmajor. (...) Según se contó en la prensa al día siguiente, el hombre que exterminó a los judíos de Europa reaccionó entonces diciendo que "no concebía imaginación alguna la criminalidad de los rojos españoles". Al escritor George Orwell también le marcó lo que vio en Cataluña.La Quinta Columna "Puede decirse que España ha sido una incubadora de varios conceptos novedosos en la terminología bélica moderna. Igual que la lucha contra los franceses a inicios del siglo XIX dio pie a la aparición del término "guerrilla", la Guerra Civil produjo el de "quinta columna". En este libro leemos también que "el 30 de marzo de 1939 el Times de Londres" informó a sus lectores de que: "La falange había tomado Madrid". Comandados por Manuel Valdés, "unos cuarenta mil falangistas se hicieron con el control de la ciudad y los retuvieron durante varias horas hasta la llegada de las tropas". Concluye Julius Ruiz que Times dio a entender que "la victoria del general Franco sobre la República se antojaba más el triunfo de una quinta columna actuante desde el interior de lo que quedaba de zona roja, que de las fuerzas regulares de los nacionales". Juan Negrín La revista estadounidense Time publicó que: "cuarenta mil simpatizantes fascistas, miembros de la quinta columna, se habían despojado de su disfraz de republicano y habían conquistado la ciudad antes incluso de que las primeras tropas de Franco hubieran cruzado el Manzanares y hubiesen tomado posesión real de Madrid". Ruiz no sólo aclara el origen de la quinta columna, sino que analiza su función en la retaguardia. ¿Eran un grupo estable, numeroso y organizado? ¿Tenía tanto poder como para justificar el despliegue de un entramado policial secreto sin escrúpulos pilotado por los dirigentes de la Segunda República, en concreto por el Partido Socialista de Juan Negrín? ¿Cuánto de verdad hay en esta "resistencia militar y civil" a una república revolucionaria y cuánto es fruto de la propaganda comunista, que espoleó y justificó el terror rojo y que dejó varias decenas de miles de asesinatos a lo largo y ancho de la retaguardia? Recuerda Ruiz que algunos historiadores ya dijeron que "en España existió antes el antifascismo que el fascismo". Acompañan al autor el historiador Pedro Fernández Barbadillo y Nuria Richart, directora de Desmemoria Histórica.

On raconte parfois, de manière aussi intrigante qu'inattendue, que les nazis auraient inventé la poupée gonflable. Cette affirmation repose sur une histoire qui, bien que peu connue, alimente les fantasmes et les anecdotes historiques insolites. À l'origine de cette rumeur se trouverait un projet secret lancé pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, baptisé « Borghild Project ».L'idée, attribuée au régime nazi, aurait germé au sein de la SS dans les années 1940. Les soldats allemands, envoyés en nombre sur les fronts de guerre, étaient souvent confrontés à l'ennui, à la solitude et aux tentations locales, notamment les prostituées. Les responsables nazis craignaient que leurs troupes contractent des maladies sexuellement transmissibles, en particulier la syphilis, à un moment où les traitements étaient encore rudimentaires. De plus, ils voulaient à tout prix préserver la « pureté raciale » selon les dogmes de l'idéologie aryenne. La solution envisagée fut aussi surprenante qu'inhabituelle : concevoir des poupées sexuelles transportables, utilisables par les soldats pour éviter tout contact avec les populations locales.C'est ainsi qu'aurait été lancé le Borghild Project, supposément soutenu par Heinrich Himmler, l'un des hauts dignitaires du régime nazi. Les poupées devaient être de petite taille pour tenir dans un sac à dos, légères, discrètes et conçues pour ressembler à l'idéal féminin aryen : cheveux blonds, yeux bleus, traits européens. Une dizaine de prototypes auraient été fabriqués, à base de caoutchouc, mais le projet n'aurait jamais été déployé à grande échelle.Pourquoi cet échec ? D'après la rumeur, les soldats auraient refusé d'utiliser ces poupées, jugeant humiliant de transporter un tel objet, surtout s'ils risquaient d'être faits prisonniers. L'idée d'expliquer à un ennemi, lors d'une fouille, la présence d'une poupée gonflable dans leur paquetage leur semblait pour le moins embarrassante.Aujourd'hui, les historiens ne disposent d'aucune preuve irréfutable de l'existence de ce projet. Les documents relatifs à Borghild sont rares, et certains pensent qu'il s'agit davantage d'une légende urbaine que d'un fait historique avéré. Toutefois, cette anecdote reste fascinante, car elle montre jusqu'où une idéologie peut pousser une armée à chercher des « solutions » technologiques pour contrôler les comportements humains — même les plus intimes.Ainsi, même si l'on ne peut affirmer avec certitude que les nazis ont « inventé » la poupée gonflable, cette histoire illustre parfaitement la manière dont la guerre, la propagande et l'idéologie peuvent engendrer les idées les plus inattendues. This includes personal lives of figures whose names appear in nearly all Nazi biographies, like Heinrich Himmler and Joseph Goebbels (“The Policeman” and “The Propagandist”), as well as professionals with skills deemed advantageous to the Nazi agenda, including Julius Streicher (“The Schoolmaster”) and the eugenicist Karl Brandt (“The Professional”), and some of the women in Hitler's orbit such as Ilse Koch (“The Witch”) and Leni Riefenstahl (“The Star”).Through these biographies, one of our greatest historians explores the enduring and unnerving questions: How could human beings carry out such terrible and murderous atrocities? Were they degenerate, deranged psychopaths, or were they ordinary men doing their jobs? How can examining individual personalities help us reach an understanding of the evil and immorality that sustained the Nazi regime?
