In our second Talking Shop episode, we talk about two of the writing resources we've found helpful on our journey. Sarah discusses The Complete Handbook of Novel Writing: Everything You Need to Know to Create and Sell Your Work, by the editors of Writer's Digest. The book is exactly what it says, and extremely comprehensive, with bonus interviews by some big name authors. Ashley turns to podcasts and discusses one podcast she found extremely helpful to developing the opening lines and paragraphs of our books. The podcast, Helping Writers Become Authors, is hosted by K.M. Weiland and has many useful hints. Also keep listening to hear what novels we're currently reading.

So... you have an outline with acts one through three. Each scene has 1-2 sentences for where it’s going, and you’re set to go. You’re ready to write, right? How do you transfer your outline to a chapter or scene of 1-2K words? How do you go from a 14 page outline (mine) to 90K? Trust me when I say I have searched this out and all I saw was how to outline. Not much on this topic unless I missed something. Even I can’t give you a concrete answer since every writer is different. However, I will share how I’m writing from mine, especially since this is my first time using an outline. Also check out K.M. Weiland’s podcast Helping Writers Become Authors episode 464 for more info. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daria-white/message

At the top of the episode, Austin and Amanda briefly address the ongoing revelations of misconduct and abuse within queer publishing. We stand with authors. Austin and Amanda go digging for comedy gold in ancient Harlequin blurbs, then get serious and talk about how damn hard beginnings can be. Amanda talks about what she typically finds missing in beginnings as an acquisitions editor. The hosts take a moment to address the diversity in romance publishing statistics released by The Ripped Bodice and chat current reads and Disneyland pipe dreams. Finally, it's Amanda's turn to have too many emotions over a D&D podcast.

Giveaway Celebration I am really happy to announce that last week my podcast passed 50k downloads. This may not sound too much for some, but for me it is very special. The reason is - when I was launching Write 2B Read the biggest fear I had was that no one will listen. That's what I was scared of most. So reaching 50k downloads is huge! To celebrate that (+ my birthday this month) I created a giveaway for writers, which you can see here. The winner will get Scrivener + 2 books, which will help become successful self-published author. Please check it out and share with those, who might be interested. Now let's get to the interview My today's guest is Bryan Cohen. Bryan is an actor, freelance writer, author and an occasional game show contestant. He has written over 30 books, which have sold more than 30,000 copies. His newest book is Ted Saves the World, the first book in a new YA paranormal/fantasy series. With Jim Kukral from Author Marketing Club, Bryan co-hosts The Sell More Books Show. He’s also been keeping a blog to help creative writers find new inspiration for the last five years. Check out Build Creative Writing Ideas here. Bryan’s writing has appeared on over 100 blogs, including The Creative Penn, Helping Writers Become Authors, HughHowey.com and RachelleGardner.com. In this interview we discuss how to deal with 2 separate audiences, how to manage time, sell more books and prepare book launches. Interview Highlights How to deal with different audiences? Different audience should be approached differently. Bryan has 2 separate audience building approaches (blog fir non-fiction and videos for fiction), 2 separate websites and different e mail lists. How to Sell More Books? In order to sell more books, you need the three things mentioned below: 1. Get the fundamentals right (strong book cover, professionally edited text, catchy title, etc.) Everything about your book listing page online has to be indistinguishable from the traditionally published and professionally .... book. [spp-tweet "If your book looks like a self-published book it's unlikely that people will buy it. " 2. Mailing List 3. Building Relationships How to Launch a Book? From the first day you're writing your book, you're considering your marketing and planning your book launch. You need to plan everything way in advance. Food for Thought [spp-tweet "It is better to be rejected and sell more books, than it is to not be rejected and never try."] Don't Forget As you already know the podcast is sponsored by the Author Marketing Institute. AMI wanted me to let you know that their next event for authors is coming up at the end of Jan. It's called Author Marketing Live and it's a virtual conference.
