Roger Corman (April 5, 1926 -May 9, 2024)—an iconic figure whose influence on Hollywood is nothing short of legendary—traversed the cinematic landscape from the late 1950's to the 1990's. Celebrated as the "Pope of Pop Cinema," the "Spiritual Godfather of the New Hollywood," and the "King of Cult," Corman was a pioneering force in independent filmmaking, forever reshaping the industry with his innovative spirit. Throughout his illustrious career, Corman collaborated with an impressive roster of emerging filmmakers, many of whom would go on to dominate the industry. Names such as Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, James Cameron, and Jonathan Demme began their journeys under his mentorship. It has often been remarked that Corman's guidance served as a vital training ground—what James Cameron famously referred to as the "Roger Corman Film School." His influence extended beyond mentorship; he was a catalyst for creativity and innovation. Nicolas Roeg served as the cinematographer for The Masque of the Red Death, while many of his protégés achieved Oscar success. Corman's reputation for fostering talent with a blend of encouragement and challenge left an indelible mark on cinema. As he famously advised, “If you do a good job on this film, you'll never have to work for me again,” exemplifying his role as both mentor and pioneer in the cinematic world. Join Azed and Tom as they explore the life and work of Roger Corman, a true maverick and inspiration for all aspiring filmmakers.

April 2, 2025: Film School
In this special episode of Focus Check, Nino Leitner is joined by cinematographer and educator Tal Lazar, known for his work with AFI, Columbia University, Sundance, and MZed. Together, they dive deep into what it really takes to become a visual storyteller in today's rapidly changing film industry. Can cinematography truly be taught? Is film school still worth the cost? Why do we obsess over gear when storytelling is the goal? And how can filmmakers bridge the intimidating gap between creativity and technology? Tal shares insightful and often provocative thoughts on education, collaboration, and why the best cinematographers are also great communicators. He also talks about his highly rated MZed courses (The Art & Science of Lenses, Cinematography for Directors and The Language of Lighting), his new podcast VISIUM, and his upcoming book The Language of Cinematography.
Gary King is a filmmaker who transitioned from a career in psychology and human resources to independent cinema, building a body of work that balances heart, hustle, and deeply human storytelling. In the spirit of Taoist unpredictability, Gary's story unfolds not as a straight line, but as a rich weave of intuition, risk, and creative alignment. He didn't attend film school—not out of rebellion, but because he didn't know it existed as a real path. Yet, what he lacked in formal education, he made up for in lived experience, teaching himself the craft by actually making films. From his first feature "New York Lately" to a haunting indie gem titled "Among Us," his journey is a testament to following that subtle inner pull, even when it defies logic or convention. What stood out most was Gary's devotion to character. He didn't chase Hollywood formulas or pre-packaged three-act structures. Instead, he sculpted stories that breathe. Stories that fail and rise again. He spoke of actors, not as tools to carry his vision, but as living beings whose rhythms dictate the energy of a scene. “The first take might be gold for one actor, but the sixth take is where another actor finds their truth,” he said. That kind of awareness doesn't come from reading screenwriting manuals. It comes from presence. It's no surprise that Gary gravitated toward stories with strong female leads. His commitment to representation isn't a gimmick—it's a reflection of his own lived dynamics. He and his wife uprooted their lives together, and it was her faith in him that seeded the beginning of his filmmaking path. When he pitched the idea of becoming a director, her response wasn't fear—it was, “Okay, how do we make this happen?”Every film Gary makes becomes his personal film school. No gatekeeping. No pedigree. Just the camera, the actor, the breath of a moment, and the sacred chaos of the edit room. One of the most beautiful sentiments he shared was how universal pain is the bridge to empathy. “You can tell a story about a Broadway dancer who never makes it, and someone who's never danced a day in their life will see themselves in that struggle.”And while his films may not be backed by million-dollar budgets or high-concept gimmicks, they pulse with something far rarer: authenticity. A humility that says, “I'm still learning.” A clarity that says, “This is who I am.” And perhaps most importantly, a humor that says, “Yes, I returned a porno tape to Blockbuster by accident, and no, I don't regret it.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.
The Memphis Grizzlies shocked the NBA by firing Grizz head coach (and former Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach) Taylor Jenkins on Friday, so Ti Windisch opened this bonus Gyro Step episode with some thoughts on why despite liking Jenkins as a coach the Bucks should NOT hire him or anybody else mid-season, or before getting a true organizational plan in place that they've lacked post Mike Budenholzer. Then the conversation shifts to a Knicks Film School episode Ti and KFS host Andrew Claudio (aka GMAC) recorded prior to the Jenkins news, featuring a ton of Bucks and New York Knicks talk ahead of their Friday night matchup. Ti and Andrew also covered some very early playoff previewing, as the Knicks and Bucks could very well end up first round opponents. While Jalen Brunson and Giannis Antetokounmpo will hopefully be active by then, there's a shot neither of them plus Damian Lillard are out for tonight's game. Welcome to the DMF. I'm Justin Younts. In this video, I dive deep into the realities of filmmaking and the misconceptions that often plague aspiring filmmakers. Many believe that going to film school is the ultimate path to success, but I challenge that notion. While film school provides valuable knowledge about terminology and roles, it can also create a rigid mindset where students feel confined to their designated roles. I emphasize the importance of flexibility and collaboration on set. If you see something that needs changing, don't hesitate to take action, regardless of your title. Filmmaking is a team effort, and every member's contribution is crucial. I share my personal experiences of long shooting days, often stretching from early morning until late at night, and the importance of maintaining focus and energy throughout. Eating on set can be a distraction, and I often prefer to keep my meals light to avoid feeling sluggish. I discuss the challenges of working with limited crew and the necessity of being hands-on, especially when you're starting out in the industry. Filmmaking is not just about directing; it extends into the editing room, where the vision truly comes to life. I stress the importance of being involved in the editing process and collaborating closely with your editor to ensure your vision is realized. Many films have suffered due to poor editing decisions, and it's vital to be present and engaged throughout the entire process. Ultimately, I want to inspire you to embrace the hard work and dedication that filmmaking demands. If you're serious about pursuing a career in this field, be prepared to get your hands dirty and fully commit to your craft. Remember, filmmaking is not just a job; it's a passion that requires resilience and a willingness to adapt. So, if you're ready to take the plunge, let's get started on this incredible journey together!00:00:00 - Introduction00:00:07 - Role of Film School and Job Roles in Filmmaking00:00:54 - Work Day and Eating Habits on Set00:01:56 - Importance of Focus and Commitment in Filmmaking00:02:49 - Challenges of Setting Up a Film Set00:05:53 - The Reality of the Filmmaking Industry00:07:05 - The Importance of Getting Hands-on Experience00:08:40 - The Role of Editing in Filmmaking00:12:43 - Sign Off

Watch Killer Body Count for FREE on Tubi: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019969/killer-body-countOn this special Halloween bonus episode of the Preacher Boys Podcast, we dive into an interview from my Film School'd YouTube channel, where I typically discuss the art of filmmaking with industry talents.Today, however, the crossover between my two worlds—horror and religious trauma—made this episode a perfect fit for Preacher Boys. I'm sharing a portion of my conversation with screenwriter Jessica Landry, who recently penned Killer Body Count, a slasher film with a hauntingly familiar twist for our listeners. The plot centers around a teenage girl misdiagnosed as a "sex addict" by her devout family and sent alone to a religious reform camp. But, in true horror style, things spiral when a masked killer targets the camp's residents one by one. Jessica and I discuss the religious undertones woven into the film, her inspiration for the story, and the biblical motifs that give a darkly ironic spin to each “death scene." We also touch on Jessica's own journey, growing up in a religious environment and eventually identifying as an atheist. For horror fans and those interested in confronting the shadows of religious trauma, this episode has something unique to offer. Listen in for insights on how horror films can explore deep-seated fears around organized religion, shame, and identity, with a splash of classic slasher thrills.✖️✖️✖️Support the Show: Patreon.com/PreacherBoys✖️✖️✖️If you or someone you know has experienced abuse, visit courage365.org/need-help✖️✖️✖️CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:preacherboyspodcast.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@PreacherBoyshttps://www.facebook.com/preacherboysdoc/https://twitter.com/preacherboysdochttps://www.instagram.com/preacherboyspodhttps://www.tiktok.com/@preacherboyspodTo connect with a community that shares the Preacher Boys Podcast's mission to expose abuse in the IFB, join the OFFICIAL Preacher Boys Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1403898676438188/✖️✖️✖️The content presented in this video is for informational and educational purposes only. Mihai has worked on several acclaimed films, blending artistry with evolving technology. In today's episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and Ryan Koo speak with Andy Volk, Emily Lock, and Mihai Malaimare Jr. to discuss: How to make the most of your time at the Austin Film Festival Why AFF stands out as a community-driven festival Tips for networking, pitching, and finding creative collaborations at the festival Mihai Malaimare Jr.'s journey from film school to becoming Francis Ford Coppola's go-to cinematographer How Mihai navigates the evolving landscape of VFX-heavy productions and maintains the balance between technology and artistry Building lasting professional relationships with directors and how to stay open to creative ideas on set Memorable Quotes: “[AFF] is one of the more welcoming festivals that I've ever been to, and it really is about community. And I think that's one of the things that we really pride ourselves on at the festival is making it feel really warm and really open.” (7:34) “It's a very rare opportunity for an aspiring and emerging storyteller to get in a room with someone who's an actual gatekeeper for Hollywood, to hear their perspective on what they're looking for and their advice to emerging voices, and to have the opportunity to speak with them, either one-on-one or in a group, and really pitch themselves.” (16:22) “I want any of our listeners who sort of skew on the shyer side to practice introducing themselves to somebody that they don't know.” (19:03) “My advice is watch everything. And I know that sounds trite, but it's so important to get outside your own taste bubble.” (25:34) “Make space for things that don't jump out at you. And you would be surprised how much you can love something that didn't really necessarily call to you.” (25:58) “It can be very stressful when you're not prepared, and you're used to productions that are really very carefully planned. If you move an inch, then it's a disaster.” (38:09) “I'm still trying to figure out why, but I'm more attracted to still photography than stills from other movies.” (52:18) Resources Mentioned: Austin Film Festival On Story podcast Mihai Malaimare Jr. on Instagram Mihai Malaimare Jr. on IMDb Mihai Malaimare Jr.'s website Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web https://nofilmschool.com/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/nofilmschool Twitter https://twitter.com/nofilmschool YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/nofilmschool Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofilmschool Send us an email with questions or feedback: podcast@nofilmschool.com! Kelly-Anne (Juliette Gariépy) wakes up every morning by the courthouse to secure a seat at the high-profile trial of Ludovic Chevalier (Maxwell McCabe-Lokos), a serial killer she is obsessed with. As days go by, the young woman bonds with another groupie (Laurie Babin), which momentarily breaks her out of her loneliness. But as the proceedings drag on and she spends more time in the courtroom with the victims' families, Kelly-Anne finds it increasingly difficult to maintain her psychological balance and assume her morbid fixation with the killer. She will then do whatever it takes to get her hands on the final piece of the puzzle: the missing video of a murdered 13-year-old girl, to whom Kelly-Anne bears a disturbing resemblance.Connect with the Film School'd Podcast:– Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/filmschoold– Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/filmschooldpod/– Twitter: https://twitter.com/FilmSchooldPod– YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdgrswiL4AGviAOcbzfYCAwContinue the Conversation in the Official Film School'd Discussion Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/filmschoold
