Vulnerability is often talked about as openness, but what if it's actually about capacity? In this episode, we continue our series on friendships by exploring what it really takes to share our inner world with one another in a meaningful way. Drawing from Dr. David Schnarch's work on the Four Points of Balance, we look at vulnerability not just as something we do, but as something we practice within relationship. From developing a Solid Flexible Self, to cultivating a Quiet Mind & Calm Heart, to practicing Grounded Responding and Meaningful Endurance, this episode unpacks how we stay rooted in ourselves while building deeper, more honest friendships. I invite us to rethink vulnerability, not as raw exposure, but as a lived, relational balance that shapes the way we show up in our friendships. Thought-provoking quotes: “For every one of us, vulnerability has told a story in our lives...not always directly, but through our experiences. Through the moments we've shared something real, and how those moments were received.” - Taylor Joy Murray “We all carry an inner world: a rich, complex web of thoughts, feelings, and experiences that shapes who we are. But expressing that inner world, learning how to put it into words and share it with someone else, takes time and practice.” - Taylor Joy Murray “Vulnerability isn't just about being open. It's about being present. It's about staying connected to yourself while also staying connected to someone else.” - Taylor Joy Murray Get Faith & Feeling's weekly resource email Watch this episode on YouTube Grab a copy of my book Stop Saying I'm Fine Connect with me on my website Find me on Instagram @__taylorjoy__ Key words: friendship, authentic relationships, emotional safety, community, vulnerability, loneliness, connection, intimacy, curiosity, authenticity, personal growth, spiritual formation, courage, compassion, self-awareness

In this episode of The Partnership Podcast, Lauren and Trey delve into the complexities of sexual desire, the nuances of arousal non-concordance, and the power of radical accountability in relationship repair. Moving beyond the clinical definitions of High Desire Partners (HDP) and Low Desire Partners (LDP), they share personal stories; from bucket-list moments in an Amtrak bathroom to the restorative power of gentle, non-genital touch.Lauren, a Certified Holistic Sexuality Educator, breaks down a fundamental biological difference that often causes friction in partnerships: the order of arousal and desire. While many people with penises experience spontaneous desire (the sudden "want" for sex) most people with vulvas experience responsive desire, where physiological arousal must happen before the mental desire to pursue sex kicks in. Understanding this "A before D" sequence (Arousal before Desire) is a game-changer for couples navigating mismatched sex drives.Following their exploration of David Schnarch's Intimacy & Desire, the duo discusses how these roles are not fixed and often flip depending on the context, whether it's travel, professional ambition, or the need for spaciousness. They tackle the "lonely feeling" of the LDP and the importance of the HDP "wooing" rather than demanding. By standing in the Four Points of Balance, Lauren and Trey demonstrate how to maintain a Solid Flexible Self while negotiating intimacy. The conversation shifts to a vulnerable look at desire smuggling and brinksmanship. They explore how to make requests that are "true wants" rather than hidden agendas for sex. Trey shares his experience of providing "trustworthy touch"; exploring erogenous zones without the obligation of penetrative sex, and how that safety allowed Lauren's body to "come online" naturally. Is your relationship feeling like a "checklist item"? Whether you are navigating mismatched desire or looking to deepen your relational intelligence, Lauren offers embodied coaching to help you restore pleasure and respect in your partnership.Request your free 15-minute consult at sexedforyou.com/freeconsult.About ThemLauren and Trey are partners living in Central Virginia, where Lauren owns and operates Sex Ed for You. In this episode, Lauren and Trey dive deep into the clinical and practical applications of David Schnarch's Intimacy & Desire. Moving beyond the bedroom, they explore how the concepts of the High Desire Partner (HDP) and Low Desire Partner (LDP) manifest in every corner of a partnership; from travel and hosting to professional ambition and the pace of daily life. While these terms are often used to describe sexual frequency, Lauren and Trey chop it up to see how these roles flip depending on the context. They explore how Trey often moderates the pace of adventure while Lauren pushes for the next big trip, and the inherent toll of being the HDP for community and hosting. They take a raw look at the intersection of urgency and spaciousness, examining how Trey's desire for a slower, more generative pace interacts with Lauren's high-capacity professional drive.Lauren and Trey tackle the "heavy burden" of being the Low Desire Partner in a sexual dynamic. Lauren deconstructs the cultural shame often directed at women who are HDPs, as well as the pressure felt by LDPs who feel they are keeping their partner from what they want. They explain why they don't actually have a sex problem despite their differing levels of desire, pointing instead to the importance of a Solid Flexible Self. By having a well-defined sense of self that doesn't depend on a partner's constant validation, they are able to use requests and offers in the "third domain" to negotiate intimacy without one person feeling controlled by the other.Coming off a season of repair, they share a vulnerable moment of "slam poetry" eroticism and the importance of receiving a partner's desire even when capacity is low. They model how to stand in the Four Points of Balance, ensuring that neither partner feels silenced or pressured. By understanding that the initial honeymoon phase is a temporary chemical state, they demonstrate how moving into a differentiated, long-term partnership requires intentional tools and a commitment to separate self-responsibility.Lauren offers embodied coaching to help you and your partner navigate these dynamics with clarity and grace.Request your free 15-minute consult at sexedforyou.com/freeconsult.About ThemLauren and Trey are partners living in Central Virginia, where Lauren owns and operates Sex Ed for You. Can you "turn off" a narcissist with one calm sentence? Tony unpacks the viral "narcissistic off switch" concept and discovers why tactics alone won't save you—but they might be exactly where real transformation begins. After stumbling upon behavioral expert Chase Hughes' framework for disarming manipulation using FOG (Fear, Obligation, Guilt), Tony initially resisted the idea. It felt too simple. But when he traced the concept back to its source, something shifted. The off switch isn't about changing them—it's about stopping the erosion of you. Through raw client stories and David Schnarch's differentiation work, Tony reveals why awareness doesn't land as insight to the emotionally immature—it lands as exposure. And exposure is a threat. What you'll learn: Recognize when FOG and CAVA (Control, Approval, Validation, Attention) are being used against you Understand why naming manipulation often backfires in deeply bonded relationships Apply Schnarch's four points of balance to stay grounded during accusations Stop defending a "reflected sense of self" and start building one that's truly yours Embrace outcome independence—saying your truth without needing their agreement Drawing from 20+ years as a marriage and family therapist specializing in emotionally immature dynamics, Tony bridges tactical awareness with the deeper work of differentiation. 00:00 Introduction and Social Media Plugs 01:11 The Lost Episode: Narcissistic Off Switch 05:27 Chase Hughes and the Concept of Prediction 16:11 Understanding Manipulation: FOG and KAVA 18:33 Real-Life Examples: Navigating Emotional Manipulation 28:46 Understanding Unhealthy Responses 29:24 The Power of Differentiated Response 30:18 Challenges in Relationships 30:42 Contrasting Views on Manipulation 32:09 Real-Life Examples of Manipulation 37:22 The Concept of Differentiation 43:35 Projection and Emotional Immaturity 46:50 The Four Points of Balance 50:53 Gridlock and Constructing Your Crucible 54:22 Final Thoughts on Emotional Autonomy Contact Tony at contact@tonyoverbay.com to learn more about his Emotional Architects men's group. Is there such a thing as a "narcissistic collapse" — or is it just another trend designed to keep you scrolling at 2 AM looking for answers to why your relationship is the number one source of your frustration? Tony answers an email from a listener who keeps seeing videos promising that 2025 will be "the year of the narcissistic collapse"—the moment when the mask finally falls off, and everyone sees the truth. Cosmic justice would finally be served, and he would immediately feel a sense of relief, and either his partner would now become the person he'd always dreamed of, or he would undoubtedly find his soulmate within minutes after the collapse. And they would ride off into the sunset together. Tony breaks down the email line by line and unpacks everything from emotional immaturity and projection, the danger of couples therapy with the narcissist, to the continuing trap of trying to give your partner an epiphany. But the real conversation is about what narcissistic collapse actually is — and more importantly, what it isn't. Here's what the internet won't tell you: A narcissistic collapse isn't a sign of their progress. It's a sign of yours. They're not collapsing because they've changed. They're collapsing because you have — and the system that kept them emotionally afloat is breaking down. In this episode, you'll learn: - Why asking "Am I the narcissist?" almost always means you're not - The difference between reactive abuse and actual instability — and why therapists often get it wrong - How your vulnerability becomes an "attack surface" in emotionally immature relationships - What the research actually says about narcissistic injury, decompensation, and collapse - Why your growth equals their loss of control — and your calm equals their panic - David Schnarch's theory on differentiation, and his Four Points of Balance that make real change possible - How to stop selling yourself on a destination of hope and start building the vehicle that will truly take you where you need to go If you've ever scrolled through narcissism content at 2 AM looking for answers, this one's for you. 00:00 Introduction and Episode Overview 00:38 Listener Email: A Muse for Self-Discovery 01:00 Defining a Muse in Everyday Life 01:55 Listener's Struggle: Emotional Immaturity and Narcissism 02:28 The Narcissistic Collapse: Fact or Fiction? 02:51 Listener's Background and Marriage Issues 03:30 Therapy and Self-Doubt 03:51 Emotional Immaturity's Impact on Vulnerability 04:06 The Epiphany Trap and Anxious Attachment 04:35 Couples Therapy Pitfalls 05:18 The Role of Social Media in Coping 19:45 Reactive Abuse and Emotional Safety 28:01 The 5-4-3-2-1 Countdown Technique 29:09 Understanding Narcissistic Collapse 30:08 The Origin and Impact of Narcissistic Injury 30:39 The Role of Boundaries in Narcissistic Collapse 31:21 Emotional Immaturity and Defensive Structures 36:13 The Process of Differentiation 37:51 The Importance of Self-Validation 38:26 The Narcissistic Collapse as a Sign of Your Progress 44:10 Selling the Destination vs. Building the Vehicle 47:12 The Reality of Transformation and Healing 52:10 Final Thoughts and Encouragement Women navigating emotionally immature relationships: come join Tony's private women's Facebook group. The Library of Lost Maps by James Cheshire, Professor of Geographic Information and Cartography, tells the story of the discovery of a treasure-trove at the heart of University College London. In a long-forgotten room James found thousands of maps and atlases. This abandoned archive reveals how maps have traced the contours of the world, inspiring some of the greatest scientific discoveries, as well as leading to terrible atrocities and power grabs. But maps have not always been used to navigate or reveal the world, according to a new exhibition at the British Library on Secret Maps (from 24 October 2025 to 18 January 2026). Jerry Brotton, Professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary University of London, and author of Four Points of the Compass, explains how mysterious maps throughout history have been used to hide, shape and control knowledge. The biographer Jenny Uglow celebrates a different kind of mapping in her new book, A Year with Gilbert White: The First Great Nature Writer. In 1781 the country curate Gilbert White charted the world around him – from close observation of the weather, to the migration of birds to the sex lives of snails and the coming harvest – revealing a natural map of his Hampshire village.Producer: Katy Hickman Assistant Producer: Natalia Fernandez

Expect it to happen. John 15:20-21 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. 2. Don't repay evil for evil Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. Romans 12:17 3. You are blessed and should rejoice. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matt 5:11-12 4. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss Jerry Brotton's brief but delightful and highly informed audiobook exploring geographic direction. Narrator Liam Garrigan has a natural storytelling style, and his British accent and professional delivery work well for the material. The central idea is how the cardinal directions gave life meaning throughout history but are now being displaced in the digital age, when the ideas of east against west and south versus north have geopolitical, rather than geographical, meanings. North, South, East and West — the cardinal directions have a surprising history of cultural and social significance. Jerry Brotton, professor of English and history at the University of London, joins host Krys Boyd to discuss how something as simple as a compass has come to define our world — from how “the West” defines political power, what we mean by “the Global South,” and why cardinal directions might have been some of the very first words used in human language. His book is “Four Points of the Compass: The Unexpected History of Direction.” Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices
Why did early Islamic cartographers place south at the top of their maps? Who invented the magnetic compass? And why has 'the west' become an intensely political term, as well as a geographical one? Here, in conversation with Spencer Mizen, Jerry Brotton answers the most intriguing questions on the history of the four cardinal points: north, east, south and west. A tour guide from England's scenic Lake District recommends two areas — in Switzerland and Iceland — offering even more stunning landscapes to explore. Then a historian invites us to reconsider how we orient ourselves in time and space as he shares insights he's gained from exploring how we arrived at our modern sense of direction. And a former NPR correspondent discusses what happens when a place gets a new name, and how an altered identity can transform the place itself.
