Last fall, Bari Weiss, former New York Times columnist and creator of The Free Press, was hired as the editor-in-chief of CBS News. The hiring came soon after Paramount, CBS's parent company, was purchased by David Ellison, whose father is a supporter and adviser to President Trump. New Yorker staff writer Clare Malone has written a new piece, "Inside Bari Weiss's Hostile Takeover of CBS News," based on her reporting on the changes happening within CBS News since Weiss was hired. Malone discusses her findings and takeaways on the state of one of America's most storied newsrooms.

The New Yorker staff writer Jay Caspian Kang joins Tyler Foggatt to discuss the role the church has played in sustaining protest movements—and whether effective political dissent in the United States is possible without involvement from religious institutions. They talk about how churches have historically provided moral authority, infrastructure, and community to movements for social change, why those qualities have been difficult to replicate in the age of social media and mass protest, and what is lost when dissent becomes sporadic or primarily digital. They also examine whether churches still have the widespread credibility and organizing capacity to anchor protest today, and what it would take for religious institutions to once again embrace a central place in modern political life. This week's reading: “Can American Churches Lead a Protest Movement Under Trump?,” by Jay Caspian Kang “Inside Bari Weiss's Hostile Takeover of CBS News,” by Clare Malone “An Unhappy Anniversary: Trump's Year in Office,” by Amy Davidson Sorkin “The Overlooked Deaths of the Attack on Venezuela,” by Oriana van Praag “Why Trump Supports Protesters in Tehran but Not in Minneapolis,” by Benjamin Wallace-Wells The Political Scene draws on the reporting and analysis found in The New Yorker for lively conversations about the big questions in American politics. Jihad. Is it the struggle to live a virtuous life? Or is it something far more sinister? Is it the “holy war” that fundamentalist Muslims are waging against westernized society? To understand the factions of Islam throughout the world and its impact on America, Dr. Robert Greer, an assistant professor at Liberty University, unpacks the four major sects of Islam: folk, fundamentalist, moderate, and reformed. Folk Islam is the most “superficial form” of Islam, and it requires a minimal amount of faith. Fundamentalists are the most “extreme,” as seen in places like Gaza or in the rank-and-file of Hamas terrorist cells. Moderates are a blend of westernized idealism and core Quran teachings, while reformed Muslims are essentially seeking to revolutionize their own faith from the inside out. And a warning to all, Islamic fundamentalism or terrorism is not a “hijacking” of Islam - it IS Islam, says Robert.TAKEAWAYSMuhammad the prophet is believed by Muslims to be the final prophet of AllahThe Quran, the Islamic holy book, is divided into two halves that explore two different time periods of Muhammad's lifeMost people in America have no idea what the teachings of Islam really are, and believe it promotes peace, when it's the exact oppositeReformed Islamists do not believe that the Quran is inspired, and they do not believe in global Jihad

For this installment of the Redacted History Podcast, I had an enlightening and vulnerable conversation with Dorian Warren, the Co President of Community Change and Community Change Action. In this episode we discuss what life has been like for Dorian, a Black father living in Washington DC during a second Trump administration and the current military occupation of DC. We discuss how Trump wants to not only takeover DC but move to other progressive cities like Chicago, Dorian's hometown. Finally we talked about what folks who want to take action can plan to do over the next 3.5 years . Community Change is a nonprofit organization founded in 1968 at the height of the civil rights movement by leaders of the civil rights and anti poverty movements. They fight for economic freedom, a care economy that allows families. Providers, and communities to access care, and an immigrant inclusive multiracial democracy. They believe that unless we can find a path toward an immigrant-inclusive multiracial democracy, the number of Americans excluded from basic social and economic protections will continue to increase, and conflicts over rights and resources will tear us apart. About Dorian Warren: Dorian Warren is co-President of Community Change and Community Change Action. A progressive scholar, organizer and veteran media personality, Dorian has worked to advance racial, economic and social justice for more than two decades. Growing up on Chicago's South Side, Dorian learned firsthand the power of unions to unleash economic opportunities. His great-grandparents were sharecroppers, his grandparents were janitors and his mother was a teacher in Chicago's public schools for more than 40 years.
