The Context of White Supremacy reviews the film, INDEFENSIBLE: The Wrongful Prosecution of the Albany Three. The filmmakers will join us to re-examine an important incident from the beginning of 2016. Three black female University of Albany students, Ariel Agudio, Asha Burwell, and Alexis Briggs, reported that a mob of drunken White passengers assailed them on a CDTA public bus. Many expressed outrage about the incident, including presidential candidate Hillary R. Clinton, who posted, "There's no excuse for racism and violence on a college campus." However, weeks after the incident, university police publicized segments of video. Officials concluded the footage absolved the White passengers of any wrongdoing and proceeded to charge the three black females with assault and filing a false report. The three were indicted in May. "The University of Albany expelled Agudio and Burwell and suspended Briggs for two years. INDEFENSIBLE "examines the ways both race and racism are viewed," and highlights "the inherent problems in allowing the benefactors of racism to define and legitimize what constitutes a racially motivated act." Ms. Browder was an indomitable advocate for her son, Kalief, who committed suicide after years of incarceration and solitary confinement at New York's Rikers Island. If ever someone needed to be caged, it's Jessica Sanders. Earlier this summer, Sanders, a White Woman, spat on a black couple while repeatedly calling them niggers. Sanders now faces two felonies and fears retribution. In another example of the terrorism inspired by White Women, a monument to Emmett Till was defiled with gunfire. Hillary R. Clinton and Donald J. Trump engaged in their final verbal shootout at the third presidential debate. Trump will take place in St. Louis, Missouri; the candidates will spar down the road from where Michael Brown Jr. was killed by Ferguson police. The drama won't be restricted to politics, as Nate Parker and Ava DuVernay each have new films addressing Racism premiering this week. Parker's The Birth Of A Nation hits the silver screen after months spent thrashing the actor and filmmaker for rape accusations nearly two decades old. DuVernay's acclaimed film, 13th, deconstructs how slavery has been refined, not abolished. Her film makes known how decades of deliberately Racist laws have caged generations of black people. The political performances, box office debuts and the launch of Luke Cage obscured the destruction Hurricane Matthew delivered in Haiti. Trump wranggled during the first presidential debate of 2016. The brouhaha was the most watched presidential debate in history, rivaling Super Bowl ShondaLand ratings. Many outlets crowned Clinton the victor - even praising her straightforward articulation of Racism. However, the "liberal" New York Times' Tuesday (Sept. 27th) edition made the debate front page news, but parallel to the debate photo was a report detailing the spike in murders during 2015. This seemed to substantiate Trump's demands for "law and order" and intensified police surveillance. Upstate from the throw down in Hofstra, Oral Hillary, a 42-year-old black male, was acquitted during the trial for a murdered white 12-year-old in Potsdam, New York. Hillary was previously invovled in a sexual relationship with the child's White mother. Many White residents seethed having to endure another black male walk free. Black scholars from Missouri to Nebraska to Michigan to Pennsylvania continue to have a hard time walking the halls of higher learning. The authorities released video of Keith Scott's execution by enforcement officers in North Carolina - and simultaneously reminded us that Scott was a no count, dangerous negro. The greatest tennis player of all time, Serena Williams, revealed her fears about driving under White Terrorism. Speaking of dead black people, all charges were dropped against the six officers accused of the 2015 death of Freddie Gray. Prosecutor Marilyn Mosby maintains that the lack of convictions do not exonerate the Baltimore Police Department. The summer of violence and ongoing black death became so extreme it compelled NBA legend Michael Jordan to respond publicly about Racism - many were unamused. Conversely, $40 Million Slave author William C. Politicians are used to representing the hopes of others: they're just as used to dashing those hopes against the hard walls of reality. For millions of women, the first real chance of a female president has excited their hopes, some pending for generations. For millions of Black men and women, the first real chance of a Black president had excited their hopes, some deeply held for nearly a century. For most people, however, politics is the art of unrequited hope, for politicians promise the moon, and deliver star dust. There is, after all, a reason why millions of Americans are so cynical about politics, for they've learned that cynicism from the bitter well of experience. But consider these voices drawn from those we call the white working class; middle-aged Al and Evelyn Landsberg; he, a lifelong Republican who recently switched political parties, and was quoted as telling a Washington Post reporter recently that Sen. Hillary R. Clinton (D.-N.Y.) would get his vote, although she wasn't great. Clinton was, however, a good deal better than her opponent, "you know, uh Embowa. He'd take this country right down the tubes." His wife, Evelyn, cited data she gleaned from emails, saying, "From what I can tell, if he (Embowa?} becomes president he will refuse to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and we will leave Iraq unprepared." She added, "I'm not going to sit at home and let that happen."* It's amazing to think that, several generations ago, millions of Blacks were denied the right to vote through bogus literacy tests, while millions of ignorant whites voted unhindered, by virtue of birthright. Politics is often seen and interpreted as, well, 'the will of the people.' It is often described in lofty judicial decisions and thick political science texts as democracy in action--the People choosing their Government, and ultimately, the American 'way of life.' Yet, how much is simply unbridled ignorance? How much is simply blind racial hatred? How much is just plain silliness? And how much has this been force fed by the corporate media, which can almost beat a dead horse back to life? If the role of the media is merely to reinforce and buttress our collective ignorance, what can democracy mean?
