Close Readings: Nietzsche's 'Schopenhauer as Educator'

In this extended extract from their series 'Conversations in Philosophy', part of the LRB's Close Readings podcast, Jonathan Rée and James Wood look at one of Friedrich Nietzsche's early essays, 'Schopenhauer as Educator'. For Nietzsche, Schopenhauer's genius lay not in his ideas but in his heroic indifference, a thinker whose value to the world is as a liberator rather than a teacher, who shows us what philosophy is really for: to forget what we already know. ‘Schopenhauer as Educator' was written in 1874, when Nietzsche was 30, and was published in a collection with three other essays – on Wagner, David Strauss and the use of history – that has come to be titled Untimely Meditations. Jonathan and James consider the essays together and their powerful attack on the ethos of the age, railing against the greed and power of the state, fake art, overweening science, the triviality of universities and the deification of success.James Wood is a contributor to the LRB and staff writer at The New Yorker, whose books include The Broken Estate, How Fiction Works and a novel, Upstate.Jonathan Rée is a writer, philosopher and regular contributor to the LRB whose books include Witcraft and A Schoolmaster's War.To listen to the rest of this episode and all our other Close Readings series, sign up;In Apple Podcasts: https://lrb.me/nietzscheapplecrIn other podcast apps: https://lrb.me/nietzschesccr Hosted on Acast. Our hosts weigh in about the hardships both categories of folx endure and the efforts it takes to embody one's truest self beyond societal norms. At the end of the day, in both cases, while the pursuing one's authenticity may be a choice the reasons for their gender expansiveness is a necessity.-----SAVANNAH HAUK is the author of “Living with Crossdressing: Defining a New Normal” and “Living with Crossdressing: Discovering your True Identity“. Tonight, we're joined by Steven from New York State, who's had more than his share of strange encounters. One unforgettable night during his teenage years, a quiet swim with a friend turned surreal when a blinding light and a deep, vibrating hum descended above their pool, leaving the boys in stunned silence. Later in life, Steven witnessed a truly massive, flat-bottomed craft drifting silently over his neighborhood. It was a moment of awe, quickly followed by disbelief from others… until a friend independently confirmed seeing the same UFO just miles away, describing it in exact detail. But Steven's experiences go far beyond traditional sightings. In 1986, a weekend trip to a lakeside cottage took a bizarre turn when two men revealed that their friend “BILL” wasn't from Earth. That weekend exposed Steven to strange technology, mysterious artifacts, and a glowing blue sphere said to possess powerful healing abilities, an encounter that left him shaken and full of unanswered questions. Then, in 1989, Steven experienced classic missing time. After leaving work late one night, he blacked out behind the wheel, only to wake up hours later and 30 miles away near Mohegan Lake. He was disoriented, his car interior was a mess, and a strange lump behind his ear had appeared, one that remains to this day.More information on this episode on the podcast website:https://ufochroniclespodcast.com/ep-334-upstate-contact/If you enjoy this podcast, please support the show with a virtual coffee:https://ko-fi.com/ufochroniclespodcastFollow and Subscribe on X to get ad free episodesX: https://x.com/UFOchronpodcast/Want to share your encounter on the show?Email: UFOChronicles@gmail.comOr Fill out Guest Form:https://forms.gle/uGQ8PTVRkcjy4nxS7Podcast Merchandise:https://www.teepublic.com/user/ufo-chronicles-podcastHelp Support UFO CHRONICLES by becoming a Patron:https://patreon.com/UFOChroniclespodcastAll Links for Podcast:https://linktr.ee/UFOChroniclesPodcastThank you for listening!Like share and subscribe it really helps me when people share the show on social media, it means we can reach more people and more witnesses and without your amazing support, it wouldn't be possible.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/ufo-chronicles-podcast--3395068/support.

Hour 1, Segment 1 : The Charlie James Show - (3:00pm) - Thursday May 15th, 2025 full And welcome to the program on this Thursday afternoon as everybody's getting ready for the weekend. I know you are. I am my own self. Boy, I tell you what, lot better day today, man. It is we have had such a wet, spring out there. Unbelievable how much rain we've had, but at least this night's out there, momentarily. But this is the time of year we always get those, afternoon and evening thunderstorms and things like that. So, okay. I wanted let's just jump back in the way back machine for a minute, just for a minute, and go back to a pivotal moment or what would become a pivotal moment in American history. It was one can you believe it? It was one year ago today one year ago today that Joe Biden and his campaign decided that they needed to release a video. They were gonna release a video, y'all. And, boy, I'd say what a oh, they got this, and I'm pretty sure they took them, like, thirty, forty takes to get it right because it was Joe. But they needed it they needed to be authoritative. They needed it to be tough because everybody said Joe Biden wasn't tough, and Joe Biden likes to pretend he's a tough guy. He's a fake tough guy. So they released this video. And what did the video say? Oh, boy. Here we go. Wait a minute. Where is it? Hold on. Hold on. Here it's here it is. You don't wanna miss this. Here we go. Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020. It said that he hadn't shown up for debate. Now he's acting like he wants to debate me again. Well, make my day, pal. I'll even do it twice. So let's pick the dates, Donald. I hear you're free on Wednesdays. Donald Trump And what happened? Yeah. They did the debate, and that was the end. That was the end of Joe Biden. That was the literally, that night, as we all gathered to there together at at Willy Taco and we watched that debate, that was the end. We didn't we didn't even we didn't even realize that we were all excited. We didn't even realize what was gonna happen on that night. We got together. We're reading. We were excited. We knew it was gonna be good. And then that debate happened, and we all sat there with our mouths open going, oh, my word. This is the worst thing we've ever seen. It was we're literally watching a slow motion train wreck happen on in front of the world. In front of the world. We had known all of us have been saying, you know, Joe Biden's got mental decline. Joe Biden's cognitive abilities are slipping. Joe Biden is just he's he's not he's missing a couple of steps. But everybody in the mainstream, he was like, oh, no. He's sharp as a tack. Everything is great. I've never seen him better. This version of even, morning Joe, this version of Joe Biden, Joe Biden two point o. This is the, oh, this is the best he's ever been. He's just amazing. And then that night happened, that debate, we knew we were right. We knew we were right, and Joe Biden proved it. Donald Trump didn't have to do Donald Trump practically didn't have to do anything in that debate. It was one great line, where where where Trump says, I I don't know what he's saying. I don't I don't think he does either. And everybody's like, wow. Yes. It was an absolute slaughter. It was such a slaughter that when Donald Trump debated Kamala Harris, it was three against one. You had the two moderators and Kamala Harris. All three of them were debating Donald Trump. That's how bad the Joe Biden debate went. They had to triple team Trump in the Harris debate. It was unbelievable. But now now we find out that everything that they well, everything that we believed, they knew. They knew all of this was happening. That new book by by Jake Tapper, who, by the way, was one of the people that defended Joe Biden. Laura Trump made some accusations on his show over on CNN. He said, oh, you don't have any evidence of of cognitive decline. Yeah. Yeah. And then we find out that everybody had evidence of cognitive decline. Even in in that book with Jake Tapper called original sin, Even the Whit ... 500 Thu, 15 May 2025 19:18:00 +0000 UxIiFCBjDNSe32HKafp5bXGJuqjPkQFh news The Charlie James Show Podcast news Hour 1, Segment 1 : The Charlie James Show - (3:00pm) - Thursday May 15th, 2025 The Charlie James Show originates from News/Talk 989 WORD, The Upstate's #1 Talk Station, weekdays 3-7pm. And welcome to the program on your Wednesday afternoon. Glad to have you along with us. Well, there's been a lot of talk today about the Greenville County budget and how it's going to affect Greenville County schools. Well, I figured we would go right to the horse's mouth, so to speak, and talk with the chairman of the Greenville County Council. Benton Blunt is joining us. Benton, welcome to the program. Hope you're doing well. I'm doing pretty well, but I'm glad you said from the horse's mouth, you're ass too peaceful, and that's what I feel like today. Oh, boy. I bet. Yeah. Well, thanks for joining us, and fighting through the pain there. So what is going on with the budget, and and how is it affecting the Greenville County Schools? Alright. I'll try to make this as quick as I can, but it's pretty complex. So from a 30,000 foot view, the new upcoming Greenville County budget, a lot of different things happening that people seen in the past. We're going to a one year budget, so there's no more two year budgets. It's just fiscal year '20 '20 '6. Right. We have a 1.5 reduction in property taxes, which is a mandate from the new members of council who came in, under that mandate. We have increased our roads budget from 13,000,000 to 40,000,000, which puts us up there where we're supposed to be or at least close, to Charleston County and some of the other counties like that. We're fully funding our public safety through our sheriff's department, EMS, and other services. But the way that we got to this place was from a unique situation with Filo agreements. And Filos are obviously where, new manufacturing jobs come to Greenville County. In the first five years, if they don't go into a Filo agreement, we receive no income at all. We receive no revenue at all. Yeah. But through a Filo, we get money upfront, which is what this program is for and also to to bring high quality jobs to the Upstate. When we started this budget out, I spoke with the administrator, and I asked about how these funds were allocated. And, you know, I said it would be wonderful if we could use this system that sometimes controversial in the public to do something good with it, which is fund our road system. And he looked into it and said, you know what, Benton? We do have the ability to do that, and, let me see what we can do, which brought us to today. Now where the school board comes in, the Greenville County School System does get a portion of these Filos, which I still have a lot of questions as to why this money was ever allocated to them when they operate off residential, and this is solely manufacturing jobs. Yeah. Right. In the southern part of the county. All that to say, we made those adjustments. We didn't know the specific numbers, but we knew that we would be sitting somewhere around 40,000,000 with the additional c funds we did thankfully receive from the state. We received more state money finally for once, and so that's what totaled the 40,000,000. The estimated amount that would be lost by the school system from reallocating the FELO percentages was at first around 8 to $10,000,000. But we found out as of yesterday, because we just got the numbers back, that it's actually $14,000,000. Along with that, our municipalities would be losing, up to a million dollars. We have some fire districts that will be losing up to a half a million in the Southern part of Greenville County. So that, of course, started a big conversation. School system definitely felt like they were caught, you know, after they had already decided not to increase taxes, they were caught blindsided. And Right. While I do take that into account, we we have a job as county council for core funds of govern or Oh, are you there? There you go. I'm sorry. You gotta go back to and and start where you, left off just a few seconds ago as a a core value of county government. Yes. Send us a textIn this raw, unflinching conversation with Hell Rell from behind the walls of Upstate Correctional Facility, we witness a man's profound transformation through the crucible of incarceration. Speaking with remarkable clarity and wisdom earned through painful experience, Hell Rell dismantles the glorified image of street life that led him to a 9x9 cell he describes as "hell on earth.""The streets don't entice me anymore," Hell Rell reflects, his voice carrying the weight of regret and newfound perspective. "Living life, that's what I'm enticed by." This compelling revelation comes from a man who gained notoriety for actions he now deeply regrets - actions that harmed his own community. As he describes the conditions at Upstate, likening it to a "modern-day plantation," listeners gain rare insight into the dehumanizing reality of America's prison system, where men are confined to cells with recreation areas resembling "kennels."Perhaps most powerful is Hell Rell's message to youth contemplating the path he once traveled: "Don't kill your own people... Live life, get money, go to school, educate yourself." His words carry unique authority, coming from someone who once saw only "four corners" of his neighborhood but now recognizes the vast possibilities beyond. When asked what he would do differently, his answer is immediate and poignant: "I would be rich... I would be on top of the world." The contrast between what could have been and his current reality delivers a message more impactful than any anti-crime program.Through this conversation, Hell Rell reveals himself not as a hardened criminal, but as "just an ordinary guy" who made choices with extraordinary consequences. His story serves as both warning and inspiration - proof that even in the darkest circumstances, perspective and purpose can emerge. After the March excitement of the 2025 Keystone Conference in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, our cohosts delve deeper into a question that was brought up during Savannah's workshop, "Why might a cis-gender female partner think that their crossdressing counterpart is objectifying womanhood and femininity when they dress up as a female"?-----SAVANNAH HAUK is the author of “Living with Crossdressing: Defining a New Normal” and “Living with Crossdressing: Discovering your True Identity“. While both focus on the male-to-female (mtf) crossdresser, “Defining a New Normal” delves into crossdressing and relationships and “Discovering Your True Identity” looks at the individual crossdressing journey. In this episode, Savannah and Julie want to discuss the same topic! Her latest achievements are two TEDx Talks, one entitled "Demystifying the Crossdressing Experience" and the other "13 Milliseconds: First Impressions of Gender Expression". Savannah is a male-to-female dual-gender crossdresser who is visible in the Upstate of South Carolina, active in local groups and advocating as a public speaker at LGBTQ+ conferences and workshops across the United States. At the moment, Savannah is working on more books, blogs, and projects focused on letting every crossdresser–young and mature–find their own confidence, expression, identity and voice.IG @savannahhauk | FB @savannahhauk | FB @livingwithcrossdressing | web @livingwithcrossdressing.com------JULIE RUBENSTEIN is a dedicated ally to transgender community and the certified image consultant and co-owner of Fox and Hanger. The SE region of the United States is a termite hotspot, and the Upstate of SC (Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson and surrounding counties) is no exception. In SC realtors are constantly dealing with them, and I have three termite stories from the past few months that I'm eager to share.  What I've learned from these stories is this: there are solutions to termites, but oftentimes the pest control company who is supposed to be treating the termites is just as much a part of the termite problem as they are the solution. As always, if you have any questions or comments (or, of course, need a realtor), feel free to reach out to Stan McCune directly by phone/text at (973) 479-1267 or by email at smccune@cdanjoyner.com
