Kalief Browder was a young man from The Bronx, New York, who became a tragic symbol of the failures within the U.S. criminal justice system. In 2010, at just 16 years old, he was wrongfully arrested for allegedly stealing a backpack—a charge based on shaky testimony with no physical evidence. Since his family couldn't afford the $3,000 bail, he was sent to Rikers Island, one of the most violent jails in America, where he was held for three years without trial. Nearly two of those years were spent in solitary confinement, where he endured beatings from both guards and inmates, extreme isolation, and psychological torment. Despite repeated delays in his court proceedings, Kalief refused plea deals, maintaining his innocence. In 2013, after multiple court postponements and the case falling apart due to lack of evidence, the charges were dropped, and he was released.Though physically free, Kalief never recovered from his time in Rikers. He struggled with severe PTSD, paranoia, and depression, frequently speaking about his experiences to expose the horrors of the system. Despite efforts to rebuild his life, the trauma was overwhelming. On June 6, 2015, at the age of 22, he died by suicide, hanging himself in his mother's home. His death ignited national outrage, drawing attention to pretrial detention abuses, the use of solitary confinement on minors, and the systemic failures of the bail system. His story led to major reforms, including the eventual closure of Rikers Island and the push for bail reform in New York. Kalief's legacy remains a powerful reminder of how the justice system can destroy innocent lives.

(WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE) In the early hours of Saturday, May 15, 2010, Kalief Browder and a friend were returning home from a party in the Belmont section of the Bronx. He was 16 years old. Browder saw a police car driving toward them. More squad cars arrived, and soon Browder and his friend were squinting in the glare of a police spotlight. An officer said they had robbed a man. “I didn't rob anybody,” Browder replied. “You can check my pockets.” . . . Reb shares the cases of Kalief Browder and Inmate H, and thousands of other children and adults held in pretrial detention in the United States without ever being convicted of a crime. It's been a busy period for the pioneering musical artist Rhiannon Giddens. She won a Pulitzer Prizer for her opera Omar, about Omar ibn Said, a Muslim scholar in Africa who was sold into slavery in the 1800s. She released a remarkable musical video for her song “Another Wasted Life” featuring 22 people who were wrongly incarcerated. And now her banjo playing can be heard on “Texas Hold 'Em” the new hit single by Beyonce who recently become the first Black woman to top Billboard's Hot Country Songs Chart. In October, Rhiannon Giddens spoke to Democracy Now about her remarkable life from her work in the Carolina Chocolate Drops to her new album “You're the One,” which features a song inspired by Kalief Browder.

Sixteen year old Kalief Browder spent 700 days in solitary confinement over a backpack he didn't steal, and traitor to his country, former FBI agent Charles McGonigal, only got four years in prison for being on the payroll of the Russian mafia. That and Putin's end-of-the-year speech to Russians, promising to destroy and occupy all of Ukraine, are discussed in this week's bonus episode. Joining us for urgent insights into how to navigate this all-to-familiar time of growing fascism is media historian Ray Gamache, a leading biographer of Gareth Jones, the hero of Mr. Jones, the film inspired by Jones' groundbreaking reporting on Stalin. Jones also reported from Hitler's Germany, where he warned that Hitler and his “primitive” mobs of supporters were going to transform not just Germany, but the fate of Europe. Gamache is the author of Gareth Jones: Eyewitness to the Holodomor and Gareth Jones: On Assignment in Nazi Germany 1933-34 To our supporters at the Democracy Defender level and higher, send in your questions for our Q&As. Michael Kosta discusses the day's biggest news, including President Biden landing in Israel, day two of the House Speaker vote, and a televised yule log fire mistaken for an apartment fire that might also be a stalker situation. People think Americans are gun nuts, but what they really are is bottled water nuts. Michael Kosta dives deep into the U.S.'s obsession with plastic water bottles and how harmful they are to the environment. And Grammy-winning singer and composer Rhiannon Giddens discusses the cultural importance of the banjo in American history, the collaborative work that went into her Pulitzer-winning opera, “Omar,” and the tragic story of Kalief Browder that inspired her song, “Another Wasted Life.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In March 2007, 41-year-old Theresa spent the day moving boxes from her old house to her new apartment. The LaFayette, Georgia 911 dispatcher was leaving her husband. That evening, after seeing her sister, Theresa disappeared without a trace. And local law enforcement kept coming back to the same person: Theresa's estranged husband, 52-year-old Sergeant Sam Parker of the LaFayette PD. Sam vehemently denied any involvement in Theresa's disappearance. But he had also bragged for years about how he could kill someone and no one would ever find the body. The pop culture of the Michael Peterson case is fascinating. There are many infamous true crime cases that create their own universe. The Peterson case was always going to be famous. But when Netflix bought the rights to Jean-Xavier de Lestrade's docu-series, The Staircase, Michael Peterson and his family were launched into the stratosphere. There were already books…but after Netflix reopened the saga, we have every form of media jumping on the Peterson bandwagon. Including a sitcom. Outside of South Park lampooning OJ Simpson, I don't think I've ever heard of a murder case inspiring a comedy show with the likes of John Lithgow starring. What does this say about us as a society? How far should “journalists” go to keep trying to get interviews years after the man served his time. How long should his children be chained to this case? I'm not saying I have the answers. I just think it's interesting to ask these questions.
