Teach the Babies w/ Dr. David J. Johns

In this bonus episode, we dive into two significant stories that illuminate the complexities of race, identity, and possibilities for Black children. Our journey takes us back to the 1940s and then forward to the present, where we will explore the groundbreaking work of psychologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark, as well as the narrative of Black Barbie, brought to life by director Ava DuVernay. The experiences of Black children, both in the 1940s and today, are shaped by societal views of race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression. We must continue to engage in conversations about racism, anti-Blackness, identity, orientation, and expression, and the importance of representation in all aspects of life—from education to play. Acknowledging this not only empowers children today but also sets the stage for a more equitable future. Let's all get free!Credit: Emily Leugers and Niko Feliciano, with production support.

Cierra Glaude, also known as “Shooter,” Cierra is an accomplished director and filmmaker from Mobile, Alabama. She initiated her career under the guidance of Ava DuVernay, beginning with a role on the film Selma. Cierra's passion for filmmaking ignited during her tenure at the University of Alabama, where she was instrumental in launching the Black Warrior Film Festival, an experience that paved her path to meeting DuVernay. Her directorial journey includes four episodes of the series Queen Sugar, where she evolved from a production assistant to a director. Cierra's directorial acumen extends to other notable TV series such as Power Book IV, BMF, Riverdale, and several others. Her work is marked by a commitment to diverse representation, particularly for people of color, women, and the LGBTQ community. She directed the poignant short film Last Looks, which was showcased at the Urbanworld Film Festival and later featured in Issa Rae's “#ShortFilmSundays” series on YouTube. Cierra's approach to filmmaking is deeply communal and collaborative, often emphasizing the importance of creating films with friends and nurturing relationships on set. She believes in a servant spirit in directing, focusing on serving the story and those who help bring it to life. Her career is characterized by a strong work ethic, personal connection, and joy.Shooter shared the profound impact of her brother's passing and the challenges she faced in coping with grief and loss. She opened up about her family dynamics, particularly her sometimes fraught relationship with her father and the responsibilities she has taken on as the eldest daughter, and setting personal boundaries. Shooter was candid about her need to protect herself, and the bifurcated self she has constructed—she is "Cierra" in certain situations, and "Shooter" in others. With the recently released AMERICAN FICTION film garnering all sorts of mainstream attention and critical acclaim, I thought I'd be remiss if I didn't support Ava Duvernay's latest film ORIGIN. Origin can't boast of 5 Oscar nominations including for nods for Best Film, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor but Duvernay's battle to get the movie made sounded like it was important to check it out. The majority of this episode is spent on Duvernay's skillful handling of author Isabel Wilkerson's book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents to be able to turn a non-fiction work into a well-made movie. However, Origin is also timely as host Reggie Woodson struggles to deal with the online and social media pressures to oppose racism, White America, and most mainstream headlines in manner that's acceptable to Black people. Lastly, IAP salutes the late Joe "The Black Eagle" Madison for his lifetime of legitimate service towards the fight against unfairness, injustice, and the infringement of Civil Rights. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/its-always-personal/support

It's one of the world's most consequential diplomatic relationships. The U.S. and Israel have been steadfast allies for decades. Now that enduring relationship faces its greatest test. The horrific civilian death toll in Gaza - more than 25,000 Palestinians now dead - is fracturing relations. Both openly and behind-the-scenes, the Biden administration is asking Israel to use greater restraint in its assault in Gaza, while also pushing for a post-war peace plan. But it seems prime minister netanyahu is in no mood for listening, repeatedly rejecting calls for a Palestinian state. Daniel Levy - a former Israeli peace negotiator - says Biden's handling of the Gaza crisis has done ‘tremendous self-harm' to America's global leadership image. Then, filmmaker Ava DuVernay has made exploring racism in America her life's work. Hits like ‘Selma' and ‘When They See Us' have earned her global acclaim. Now her new movie ‘Origin' - based on Isabel Wilkerson's groundbreaking book ‘Caste' - takes things beyond the U.S., drawing parallels with Nazi Germany and India's caste system. Duvernay discusses her new movie with Christiane, and reacts to the Barbie director Greta Gerwig's Oscar snub.  With the eyes of the world focused on Gaza, Ukraine is fighting for attention as supplies and ammunition run dangerously low in its fight against Putin's Russian invaders. CNN Senior International Correspondent Fred Pleitgen shows us the situation on the ground. Also in this episode, the U.S. made more than a hundred space launches last year, but the Artemis moon missions have suffered a string of setbacks and delays. Christiane asks NASA number two Pam Melroy, who is one of only two women to command a space shuttle, if America is falling behind its rivals in the race to return to the moon.  In the Amanpour Archive this week, we show you how Israeli settlements have long been problematic in the path to peace. And in Ask Amanpour, Christiane fields a question about the danger of the war in Ukraine losing the world's attention. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Ava DuVernay directed "Selma" that deals with the marches of Selma in 1965 led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This actually happened that led to an official to pass signed by President Lyndon B Johnson. A dramatized film of course but it's straightforward, it's gets to the point and the performances from the talent really give this film the attention it deserves. We get to see a MLK Jr. very human, almost too human, seeing him deal with all kinds of aspects in life epsecially with things that have nothing to do with him. People look up to this man because he is a leader and for the greatest cause any man can put themselves in because it'll literally set course to what's to come in America. The scenes of the bridge crossings are brutal and DuVernay does not relent, she shoves it to us because that is what happened. Injustice all the way to the physical level and thankfully during that time, people all over the world were able to see it and it's messed up. I'm sure in reality, it was far more brutal, you have to give it to DuVernary for showing us just a fraction of those events played out. It's hard to watch innocent woman just get beat for walking. FOR WALKING. Then again, it was George Wallace's Alabama and he didn't give a f. Tim Roth knocked the Wallace role right out of the park as he usually does. Although I feel that the film itself was a bit too scripted, like I feel the other cast were kind of robotic in a sense. The main characters, you can tell they had a lot of range to play around with and used it to their advantage. Overall, "Selma" is solid, effective and entertaining. It does get real and it makes you mad as how politics work. You ask yourself, does the president really care? Does the government really care? Regardless, when you want something you real bad, you're gonna do what you can to achieve it. MLK Jr. is the greatest example of that and he led millions.Three and a half out of four tokes.#selma #avaduvernay #injustice

Over the past 15 years, filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Selma, Queen Sugar) has become something of an institution in Hollywood. As a writer, director, and producer she's worked to make our industry more just and diverse—creating opportunities for voices that have historically been underrepresented both in front and behind the camera. In many ways her latest film, Origin, examines a hierarchy she's worked to upend through a bold body of work. And so we begin today's episode discussing her creative adaptation of Isabel Wilkerson's best-selling book, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents (7:30) and the timely questions she hopes to pose as we begin 2024 (11:35). Then, Ava reflects on the influence of her Aunt Denise (17:42), what a typical Saturday looked like in the DuVernay household (21:30), her formative years as an underground emcee at UCLA (25:28), and how working on Michael Mann's Collateral (30:59) inspired her to direct.  On the back-half, we talk about the making of Ava's first narrative feature I Will Follow (36:20), a life-changing review from Roger Ebert (40:00) and the resulting decade as a director (48:00). We also wade through this past year in Hollywood (43:46), her hopes for ARRAY in the years to come (1:02:14), and the words of Angela Davis that keep her moving forward (1:04:30).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The filmmaker Ava DuVernay has a reputation for tackling challenging material about America's troubled past. She depicted the bloody fight to achieve equal voting rights for African Americans in her 2014 film “Selma”; examined the prison-industrial complex in her 2016 Peabody Award-winning documentary “13th”; and portrayed the wrongful conviction of five teen-age boys of color in the miniseries “When They See Us.” But “Origin,” her first narrative feature film in five years, may be her most ambitious work to date. “This breaks every screenwriting rule, every rule of filmmaking that I know,” DuVernay tells David Remnick. “Origin” is an adaptation of the journalist Isabel Wilkerson's best-seller “Caste,” a complex analysis of racism and social structures. “Caste” lacks a cinematic narrative structure, and so “Origin” positions Wilkerson as its subject as she navigates the intellectual journey of the book. DuVernay felt compelled to make this movie now, in part because she thought that its message would be vital for audiences in a Presidential election year when the understanding of America's past is very much at issue. “We have to wake up and focus—focus on what is happening,” DuVernay says. “And I want this film to contribute to that conversation.”

Ava DuVernay's newest film, Origin, breaks a lot of molds. The book on which it's based, Caste, grapples with some of the deepest inequalities in our world today, and was famously deemed unadaptable into a film. Not to mention DuVernay came to the adaptation as the industry entered one of its biggest slumps in recent memory.    Not one to be dissuaded, DuVernay found a way to adapt this seminal book and to fund it outside of the typical studio-or-streamer model for making a movie. The result is a sweeping mosaic of personal stories, including Isabelle Wilkerson's own, that chronicle how lives today are defined by a hierarchy of human divisions. The adaptation speaks for itself: there were many tears in the audience of this Q&A, taped live at Art Basel in Miami, one of the partners in a revolutionary new funding model that made the project possible.   This incredible movie and the innovation that underpins its production have a lot to teach about new ways to approach some of the most intractable problems of our time.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dazzling spectacles abound, both dreamy and nightmarish, on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day. We got such a clamor for a review of "Godzilla Minus One" that we knew we had to catch up with it, and we're so glad we did. Then, we stay in Japan for "The Boy and the Heron," the first film in 10 years from the master animator Hayao Miyazaki, and possibly his last (although he still has his fastball at age 82). Then we wrap up with "Origin," an ambitious and admirable misfire from Ava DuVernay which has lots of big ideas but a clunky structure. And for our Patreon subscribers, we recap episode 4 of this latest "Fargo" seaon on Hulu. We'll be back Tuesday with news, where we'll discuss our LA Film Critics Association year-end vote and the careers of Norman Lear and Ryan O'Neal. On this new issue of The Comic Section Podcast, we begin by offering our condolences to Steve Harwell, the founding singer of Smash Mouth, and Jimmy Buffet. Their contributions to the music industry have left a lasting impact, and they will be dearly missed. Next, we delve into the entertainment industry's latest developments. Warner Bros. Discovery is facing a significant challenge with the ongoing Hollywood strikes, which are expected to negatively impact the company's 2023 earnings by a staggering $300-$500 million. This strike is undoubtedly causing significant disruptions in the world of entertainment. Roku, the streaming-platform company, is also in the spotlight as it announces plans to cut more than 300 staffers, amounting to 10% of its workforce. This decision is part of their ongoing efforts to control costs in a highly competitive streaming market. Speaking of streaming services, Paramount+ experienced its first price increase this year with the launch of Paramount+ With Showtime. Paramount CEO Bob Bakish hints that this won't be the last price hike for the streaming platform, reflecting the evolving landscape of streaming services. Charter is facing legal trouble, as it's hit with a class-action lawsuit related to a Disney carriage showdown. The outcome of this lawsuit could have significant implications for how content is distributed and accessed by consumers. On a more positive note, Ava DuVernay sheds light on an issue faced by Black U.S. Directors, who are often discouraged from applying to international film festivals. However, DuVernay's work on 'Origin' has helped break down barriers and open doors for these talented directors. In the world of entertainment previews, we take a look at trailers for Gen V Streaming, set to premiere on September 29th on Amazon Prime. Additionally, 'The Bikeriders' will hit theaters on December 1st, offering an exciting cinematic experience for motorcycle enthusiasts. Lastly, we wrap up the episode with our reviews of 'Skinamarink,' 'The Pope's Exorcist,' and Netflix's adaptation of 'One Piece.' Tune in to get our take on these latest releases and discover which ones are worth your time. Thank you for joining us on this episode of The Comic Section Podcast, and we look forward to sharing more exciting entertainment news and reviews in the future!
