In this exclusive interview, Martin Willis speaks with Professor Matthew Szydagis, Ph.D., a physicist at the University at Albany whose groundbreaking work in dark matter detection has now expanded into one of the most promising academic UAP research initiatives in the country. Following a major new endowment to UAlbany, Prof. Szydagis and his colleagues have launched a serious scientific investigation into UAP hotspots, using advanced detector technologies, atmospheric monitoring, and the same rigorous methods applied in particle astrophysics. The discussion covers the new funding and what it enables, why the team is focusing on hotspot regions, the technologies they plan to deploy—including concepts adapted from dark matter research—how academia can help answer the UAP question, Prof. Szydagis's personal drive to understand these phenomena, the challenges and opportunities ahead for scientific UAP study, and his collaborations with Prof. Cecilia Levy and Prof. Kevin Knuth. Whether you're interested in astrophysics, UAP science, or the future of academic research, this conversation offers a rare inside look at a university-backed effort to bring hard data and real science to the UAP mystery.SHOW NOTES

On May 1, International Workers Day, several hundred students, workers and other community activists marched from the SUNY Central Administration buildings in downtown Albany to the State Controller's office and then to the state capitol. The protestors called for the SUNY Administration to support the free speech rights of all students, including those supporting Palestinians and called for SUNY to divest from Israel. They also called for State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli not to renew $50 million in Israeli bonds that just expired. We here from Eyad Alkarubi of the Queer Palestinian Empowerment Network, Jamaica Miles of All of Us, Jim McCabe of Columbia County for Palestine, UAlbany student activist Jess, David Banks of UUP, labor leader Doug Bullock, and Julian Mostachetti of DSA. By Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.

Friday April 11 was the Global Climate Strike called by Fridays For Future, the group started by Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg. More than 50 people, mainly students, demonstrated at the State Capitol in Albany. We hear music by Terri Roben; Ryan, the local FFF organizer; Mark Dunlea of PAUSE/350 Albany and GELF (Green Education and Legal Fund); Kelsey from UAlbany; Vena; Matt Oill from XR and Socialist Alternative; and Hannah and RPI Sunrise. With President Trump having declared war on the transition to clean, renewable energy, it is critical that state lawmakers and Governor Hochul reverse course and include major climate measures in the state budget, starting with NY Heat, GAP, and the Renewable Capitol Act. Many spoke about the need to oppose capitalism and colonialism.

Once every semester I invite three students of mine from UAlbany to do a podcast featuring a decidedly younger point of view than mine. This is that chapter and outta the mouths of Zoomers you'l hear about the futility protesting, exhaustion over world events and fear of the future, Tik Tok and even the wonder of torpedo bats. Mirai Abe is an exchange student from Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan, to UAlbany where she studies journalism and sociology. She arrived in the US last August in time to learn English, take up a full load of classes, and write for the Albany Student Press as well as for the Japanese Student Association. She is interested in gender and sexuality in East Asia, American and Japanese politics, and social issues. Now a junior, she hopes to work as a local news reporter in the US after graduation. In her rare free time she is learning Korean, reads novels, and watches K-dramas. The biggest culture shock she faced coming to the US, she says, was seeing students wearing pajamas to classes.Sean Ramirez is a sophomore at UAlbany, double-majoring in journalism and political science. His passion for politics began through grassroots involvement, including volunteering in various upstate New York campaigns. He is an active contributor to the university's radio station, and engages with MAP, the Minorities and Philosophy organization, exploring the intersections of identity, ethics, and public discourse. He'd like to merge his interests in media and political analysis, so is aiming to amplify underrepresented voicesthrough storytelling and policy advocacy. Latoya Wilkinson is a junior at UAlbany studying journalism and English. A Brooklyn native, she has danced, acted, and played the violin since childhood. She says she learned from the arts the importance and the satisfaction of rich storytelling. She loves travel and exploration for the same reason she is drawn to reporting and is looking for a career finding and writing stories that matter.
