The Queer Family Podcast | S13 EP10 | Chelsea and Megan share their journey to parenthood as a trans woman and cis woman couple. They met online, u-hauled it (in true lesbian fashion), and quickly began their queer baby-making process. After trying the “natural” way for quite some time, they decided to switch to fertility treatments. After a long journey filled with insurance drama, unfair BMI biases, and body dysmorphia they finally successfully conceived their son, Jameson through IVF. They discuss their emotional pregnancy, including Chelsea's process of transcending her yearning to experience pregnancy and childbirth by embarking on the path of inducing lactation. Their resilience and determination in the face of adversity serve as a walking, breathing testament to the intentionality and love that drive queer parents everywhere, proving that love is love, and the kids are truly going to be all right. "We met online prior to Chelsea's transition. She told me on our third date." - Megan “So they said I was going to have to lose about at least 20 pounds to qualify for their loophole process, which was to go to another state to do the egg retrieval.” Megan If you like the episode, make sure to leave us a review and support The Queer Family Podcast on Patreon for as low as $2/month! What is induced lactation? Induced lactation refers to the production of breast milk in non-gestational parents. That's right, a woman who hasn't ever been pregnant can still breastfeed their child using this method. Sounds complicated? Well it is, but it's not impossible, and it can allow adoptive or surrogate mothers to breastfeed if they desire. What about men? Could they also lactate and breastfeed? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen the last episodes, you can click here: What is a Bullshit job? What is Pornhub? What are tiny forests? In today's episode, I interview Lauren and her mother-in-law, Donna. Lauren has MRKH syndrome and was born without a uterus so she knew from a young age that her fertility journey would be challenging. After going through IVF to retrieve and fertilise her eggs, Lauren handed her pregnancy journey over to Donna who, at the age of 50, carried Lauren's baby. Surrogacy stories aren't always straightforward but this episode is a testament to Lauren and Donna's love and gratitude for each other.

In today’s episode, Claire shares how she and her partner Steph had a home birth with their little girl LJ. As a same-sex couple, Claire and Steph used a home insemination process with sperm given to them from a very good friend. As a naturopath, Claire carefully monitored her cycles and use acupuncture to help make the process as smooth as possible. They were lucky enough to conceive on their first home transfer. Despite starting with GP Shared care Claire knew that she wanted a low intervention home birth. Claire decided to start interviewing private midwives to have a home birth and she found a lovely midwife who she and Steph connected with and they hired her for their pregnancy and home birth care.
What is induced lactation? Thanks for asking!Induced lactation refers to the production of breast milk in non-gestational parents. That’s right, a woman who hasn’t ever been pregnant can still breastfeed their child using this method. Sounds complicated? Well it is, but it’s not impossible, and it can allow adoptive or surrogate mothers to breastfeed if they desire. The benefits of breastfeeding for a baby’s wellbeing and development are well documented, in addition to the emotional bond the physical connection can create. Quite simply, breast milk is seen as the best food for a baby, so it’s understandably an option that many families would wish to explore. In 2019, a collection of photos showing a same-sex married couple breastfeeding their twins together went viral. Kelly Pfeiffer had carried the babies, while her wife Jaclyn induced lactation. What’s the science behind induced lactation then?Human breast tissue contains small clusters of alveoli, whether you’re a woman or a man. These hollow cavities are lined with cells which secrete milk. But it’s actually the hormone prolactin, produced by the pituitary gland in the brain, which stimulates the mammary glands and is mainly responsible for lactation.Interestingly, prolactin is present in the bodies of both women and men. Outside of pregnancy, women have around a third more prolactin in their bodies compared to men. During a pregnancy, this rises to 10 times more. This spike is what causes the breasts to swell and breast milk to be produced. In the case of induced lactation, hormone therapy and herbs may be used to simulate the effects of pregnancy, with close medical supervision of course. It’s also possible to produce milk through mechanical stimulation only. Devices like breast pumps and feeding tubes can assist. The process produces low volumes of milk to start with, but studies have shown the milk is just as good for a baby as that of biological mothers.Women planning to induce lactation should reach out to their healthcare provider as early as possible before their baby arrives. What about men? Could they also lactate and breastfeed?
