Michael A. Barone, MD, MPH, President and CEO of the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP), is our guest for this week's memorable edition of the Faculty Factory Podcast. His background in academic medicine and passion for all three pillars of its tripartite mission (clinical care, education, and research) have equipped him for success in many environments, including his time with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). He settled into his role as ABP CEO in early 2024. Curiosity and a Love of the Tripartite Mission Curiosity and his love of education helped set the stage for him to leave a more traditional faculty career path in pursuit of broader opportunities. Dr. Barone discusses the importance of curiosity in his professional growth throughout this interview. “I gravitated to academic medicine just because it fed something a little bit different in me,” he told us. As a board-certified pediatrician and associate professor with Johns Hopkins Medicine, he immersed himself in a culture of inquiry and innovation, laying a strong foundation for his career. With the NBME, he helped oversee the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) program and other vital initiatives. “That was a great honor and a great responsibility to oversee the US Medical Licensing Examination program,” he said. Transitions: Building Trust in New Environments Throughout this podcast, Dr. Barone discussed the interplay of curiosity and trust, as well as the occasional feelings of imposter syndrome that accompany new roles. He strongly recommends finding time to read The Thin Book of Trust, which you can learn more about here: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/770101/the-thin-book-of-trust-third-edition-by-charles-feltman/.

Ask the Lord to lead you
Have you ever felt paralyzed by the fear that your creative work isn't “good enough”? What if creativity isn't about mastery, skill, or perfection—but about the act of creation itself?
Do you ever feel like your mind is on a constant, never-ending loop—replaying past conversations, worrying about the future, or spiraling into overwhelming thoughts? If so, you're not alone. In today's fast-paced world, mental chatter can be relentless, leaving us exhausted and craving quiet, peace, and stillness. But here's the good news: stillness is always within reach. The key lies in accessing it, and that's where meditation and mindfulness come in. What You'll Learn in This Episode In Episode 2 of The Many Paths to Transcendence, we dive deep into the Stillness Path and explore how meditation—particularly transcendence meditation—can help you create space, clarity, and quiet within. What is Transcendence Meditation? A simple yet powerful meditation practice that uses neutral sounds or vibrations as a focus point. Why sounds? Because they are free of ideology, religion, or human constructs, allowing your mind to rest without judgment. By gently focusing on a sound, you can let go of distractions and experience something expansive, restorative, and deeply peaceful. Why Meditation is Just the Beginning Meditation isn't a cure-all—it's a foundation. It prepares your mind for the real work of life: transcending ego, overcoming unhealthy habits, and living with purpose and clarity. As I explain in this episode: Meditation is the deep breath before action—the moment of stillness before you take your next step forward. Key Questions for Reflection How do you currently manage the chatter in your mind? What if, instead of resisting it, you allowed yourself to sit with a neutral sound, letting it guide you to stillness? Take a moment today to explore this simple yet transformative idea. Try This Today: 5 Minutes to Stillness Set aside just 5 minutes. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and focus on a single sound—whether it's a natural sound, a bell, or one of the sounds from my guided meditations. Let go of the need to stop your thoughts. Instead, simply notice the space between them. In this stillness, you'll begin to glimpse what lies beyond the mind: peace, clarity, and the first step toward transcendence. What's Coming Next? This series, The Many Paths to Transcendence, explores different ways we can transcend life's obstacles and limitations: Stillness (today's focus) Movement (coming next) Creativity, connection, and more—because transcendence isn't about sitting still. It's about living fully, with clarity, freedom, and intention.
Have you ever felt stuck? Maybe it's the weight of a strong emotion—grief, anger, or jealousy—that feels overwhelming. Or perhaps life has become repetitive like you're just going through the motions without truly moving forward. You're not alone in this, and there is a way forward. In this episode of The Many Paths to Transcendence, we explore the profound concept of transcendence. What does it mean to rise above life's challenges, emotions, and habits? Transcendence isn't about ignoring or avoiding what's hard—it's about moving through it. It's about climbing the metaphorical mountain in front of you, step by step, and emerging stronger, clearer, and more aligned with your true self.
Feeling stuck? Like there's a gap between the life you're living and the life you know you're capable of? In this introduction to The Many Paths to Transcendence, we explore how you can rise above distractions, limitations, and doubts to connect with your higher self—a self that's strong, resilient, and aligned with your deepest values. This series is your guide to practical tools, mindsets, and practices for living a more transcendent, fulfilling life. From cultivating stillness to embracing movement, deepening relationships, and unleashing creativity, we'll explore the many paths available to you.

I didn't have the mindfulness I needed at the moment, and I became a very violent young person. Someone was calling me a name, and I got very angry. This was my first time in court-ordered therapy. I attacked somebody for calling me a name. At that moment I was living a life of looking up to my peers. I look at that moment in my life very frequently about how I reacted and what I did. Well, the Pope, so called, claimed that multiple paths lead to heaven. This is no surprise as many a supposed religious leader make similar claims. I have a notion as to why, but that is not on the agenda for today. Today we will take a look at the absurdity of this claim in light of God's Word. The case will be made that if all paths lead to the same path then that path is not God. Donald Trump was maybe kinda almost targeted for assassination again, and the pets-eating discourse has entered its second week and shows no sign of getting smarter. CIB has some thoughts on why it doesn't actually matter if any pets were or were not consumed in a town in Ohio, along with plenty of our other usual silliness. Listen, if you must! Has something we said, or failed to say, made you FEEL something? You can tell us all about it by joining the conversation on our Substack or you can send us an email here. Two major new polls of the presidential race released over the weekend show fresh gains for Kamala Harris—and illustrate how she is now putting the Sun Belt states fully in play. That gives her multiple routes to an electoral college victory over Donald Trump. So is Harris on her way to reversing Trump's gains among Latinos and young voters? What does a winning Harris coalition look like, anyway? We talked to Amanda Litman, co-founder of Run for Something, which recruits young candidates for state and local office, including many in the Sun Belt. Litman explains how the region's evolution opens up new possibilities for Democrats—and is helping to transform our politics. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today's guest is Sophie von Oertzen, the founder of Sophie Williamson Design. Throughout her childhood, Sophie witnessed numerous scenes of Gastfreundschaft at joyful dinner parties with her parents' friends, family holiday gatherings, and society events. And it's those memories of listening in on the buzz of conversations and raucous laughter shared at parties and over candlelit dinners that she's on a quest to emulate today. For Sophie, making a house a welcoming home isn't about following the latest design trends or subscribing to fashion norms. It's about challenging the status quo and letting your own authentic style shine—an aesthetic that signals to guests that they can do the same. It's in the warm lighting diffused through a beautiful lampshade or an intricately set table adorned in vibrant colors that welcomes every diner. It's in the details, the tasteful trim of a pillow or the delicate pattern of a napkin, that shows a guest you care enough about them enough to share your very best. We know listeners will love listening to (and shopping) Sophie's story! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/howdshedothat/support
