A former Playboy and Maxim model, Kelsey Turner, 31, is currently serving a 10 to 25-year sentence in a Nevada state prison for her involvement in the death of 71-year-old Dr. Thomas Burchard, a prominent child psychiatrist whose body was discovered in the trunk of her car near Las Vegas. Turner, who had a tumultuous relationship with Burchard, [BURR-chard] was described as the driving force behind the tragic events that led to the doctor's death. Burchard, who had been financially supporting Turner, was killed following a heated argument. Clark County prosecutors revealed that Turner and her then-boyfriend, Jon Logan Kennison, 32, brutally beat the doctor to death before leaving his body in the trunk of Turner's car on the outskirts of Lake Mead. Kennison, who played a significant role in the killing, previously pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 to 45 years in prison. Diana Nicole Peña, a former roommate of the couple, was initially charged with murder but later pleaded guilty to accessory to murder, insisting she was not involved in the actual killing. Peña became a key witness in the case, providing chilling details of the crime and its aftermath. In a re-aired episode of ABC's "20/20," Peña recounted the terrifying moments leading up to Burchard's death. She described how Turner became enraged after discovering photos and messages on Burchard's phone, which led to the fatal altercation. Peña recalled witnessing Kennison raise a bat, although she did not see him strike the doctor. She suggested that Turner encouraged the violence, a theory supported by prosecutors. Peña also shared how she urged the couple to take the injured doctor to the hospital, but instead, he was left to die. According to Peña, Burchard, sensing his imminent demise, asked for his jacket and confided, "They're going to kill me." Burchard's tragic end was further compounded by the discovery of his body days later, stuffed inside the trunk of Turner's blue Mercedes-Benz C300. The car, abandoned on Nevada State Route 147, was reported by a passerby who noticed it parked alone with a broken window. Burchard was well-known for his work as a child psychiatrist, often entertaining his patients with magic tricks. He had a history of financially supporting women he met online, a habit that ultimately led to his downfall. His longtime girlfriend, Judy Earp, revealed that Burchard had spent nearly $300,000 on Turner over several years and described her as "as evil as Charles Manson." Turner entered an Alford plea in November 2022, accepting the sentence for second-degree murder while maintaining her innocence. The plea deal ensures she will be eligible for parole after serving a minimum of 10 years. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In this episode, we explore the intricate world of parental alienation, drawing insights from Dr. William Burnett's five-factor model.Dr. Burnett, a seasoned child psychiatrist, shares his extensive experience in dealing with parental alienation, a phenomenon where a child rejects one parent without valid reasons. The five-factor model, comprising contact resistance, previous positive relationship, absence of abuse or neglect, alienating behaviors by the favored parent, and lack of psychopathology in the child, serves as a diagnostic tool for identifying parental alienation. In an engaging conversation, Dr. Burnett discusses the 17 primary alienation strategies and emphasizes the importance of recognizing true cases versus false allegations. Acknowledging that parental alienation is a complex issue, Dr. Burnett highlights the need for thorough evaluation, considering all factors simultaneously. As we navigate through the discussion, we gain valuable insights into the strategies employed by alienating parents, such as bad-mouthing, interference with parenting time, and portraying the other parent as dangerous. Dr. Burnett underlines the significance of distinguishing between normal behaviors in divorce situations and the pervasive, intense patterns indicative of parental alienation.Join us in "The Aftermath," where we peel back the layers of divorce, custody battles, and family trauma, sharing inspiring stories, expert insights, and actionable tips. If you find yourself entangled in a high-conflict divorce or experiencing the heart-wrenching alienation from your children, we encourage you to share your story with us. Did your child just come out to you and said they're of the opposite gender? As a parent, you don't know what to do, and it seems like the media and the whole field of medicine are pushing you to just accept that your girl is now a boy (or vice versa). Lost in Trans Nation: A Child Psychiatrist's Guide Out of the Madness by MIRIAM GROSSMAN M.D. is a new book that will help you navigate this troubling times. Have you ever felt a tug in your gut, urging you to take a leap into the unknown? That's the siren call of intuition, a force that Dr. Carolyn and I, Chantée Christian, dissect through candid conversation and shared experiences. Our anecdotes reveal how leaning into intuition not only propels us forward but also fosters personal growth.Parenting comes with its own set of trials, often entangled with guilt and self-doubt when our children struggle. We peel back the layers of these complex emotions, offering solace and understanding to parents grappling with feelings of blame. We celebrate intuition's role as an invisible compass in our decision-making process. Listen as we unpack the synergy between intuition and support, and why embracing both can transform the paths we tread.---More About Carolyn: Dr. Carolyn Howell was born and raised in Washington, DC. She also serves as Medical Director of Outpatient Mental Health Services for The Children's Guild. A leading child psychiatrist says an historic investment in mental health has not made any difference to his work or the lives of his patients. Today we're joined by child psychiatrist Dr. Miriam Grossman, author of "Lost in Trans Nation: A Child Psychiatrist's Guide Out of the Madness," to discuss the history of gender theory and the sexual liberation movement. We start off with why it has become so important to speak out against the confusion wreaking havoc on our kids when they're being told ideas that are blatantly anti-science. We talk about gender-specific medicine, which explains why male and female chromosomes make a difference in every cell and function within the body and ultimately matter beyond the reproductive system. We discuss how kids always try to put things into categories and how it's cruel to doom kids to even more confusion rather than offering clarity. Then, what's the tie between the sexual liberation movement and gender ideology, and how are the depraved, pedophilic fathers of gender ideology, John Money and Alfred Kinsey, still making an impact on what we're teaching kids about sex and gender? Perry is a book that explores the impact of trauma on childhood development by sharing the stories of various children Dr. Perry has worked with throughout his career. The book begins with an introduction to the concept of childhood trauma and its effects on the developing brain. Dr. Perry explains the different types of trauma and how they can shape a child's behavior and emotional responses. He emphasizes the importance of understanding and addressing these traumas at an early age to prevent long-term consequences.Dr. Perry then delves into several case studies, each highlighting a different aspect of trauma and its diverse manifestations. One of the notable stories is that of a young boy who was neglected and severely abused by his caregivers. Through this case, Dr. Perry illustrates how early childhood trauma can negatively impact a child's social and emotional development, leading to difficulty forming healthy relationships and regulating emotions. The book also explores the concept of the "childhood crisis response" and how trauma can alter the brain's stress response system.
