Dawn Baker, founder and CEO of US Surrogacy LLC, takes us behind the scenes of her remarkable journey from experiencing secondary infertility in her twenties to building an ethical surrogacy agency that has helped create nearly 400 families from 21 different countries.Dawn's perspective is uniquely powerful - she understands the heartache of fertility challenges firsthand while bringing 11+ years of agency leadership to the conversation. She shares candidly about the delicate art of matching surrogates with intended parents, revealing a thoughtful approach that prioritizes compatibility over convenience. Rather than simply matching based on waiting time, Dawn's team carefully considers communication styles, expectations, and even who should see whose profile first to protect everyone's emotional wellbeing. The conversation tackles the false dichotomy between compensated and altruistic surrogacy, with Dawn eloquently explaining how both motivations coexist in successful journeys. "You deserve the moon. You don't ever get paid what you're worth," she tells surrogates, while acknowledging financial realities for most intended parents. Her approach to benefits packages demonstrates remarkable transparency, encouraging surrogates to review and request changes before finalizing matches. Most fascinating is Dawn's insight into international surrogacy dynamics and how current U.S. regulatory challenges are reshaping global family-building options. She discusses the careful development of ethical programs in other countries while emphasizing the importance of maintaining stringent standards wherever surrogacy takes place.Whether you're considering surrogacy, are a current surrogate, or simply curious about how families are built across borders, this episode offers a masterclass in ethical third-party reproduction. It may be a little taboo to talk about it, but there are a lot of people out there who, for a variety of reasons, don't have as much sex as they would like, or arguably need. And there's actually a form of therapy out there which is specifically designed to help people become more comfortable with sex and intimacy. The idea of sex surrogacy started catching on in Europe in the 2000s, and these days it's actually regulated and even covered by social security in some countries, like Switzerland, Denmark and the Netherlands. Still, in many places it's a legal grey area, and raises a number of ethical questions to boot. For example it became a subject of debate in France in 2013, when a proposal was put forward to cover sex surrogacy expenses for disabled people. Why would someone need to use the services of a sex surrogate? What's the difference between a sex surrogate and a sex worker? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions ! #surrogacy #ivf #surrogateRachel's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rachelgoldbergtherapy?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==Step into the emotional landscape of surrogacy with licensed therapist Rachel Goldberg as she pulls back the curtain on the psychological aspects of gestational carrier journeys. What many surrogates fear as judgment—psychological evaluations—are actually thoughtful assessments designed to ensure everyone's wellbeing throughout this profound experience.Rachel reveals why joint counseling sessions between surrogates and intended parents should be standard practice before contracts are ever signed. These facilitated conversations create safe spaces to discuss difficult topics like selective reduction, communication boundaries, and post-birth relationships. As she shares, "We're building the foundation so that when cracks happen, they remember there's a foundation first."The most compelling insight? Nearly everyone initially resistant to these sessions later expresses profound gratitude for the experience. Through real examples from her practice, Rachel illustrates how these sessions prevent misunderstandings and establish authentic connections between parties who might otherwise struggle to navigate their different communication styles and expectations. We explore what really happens in psychological screenings (hint: they're looking for human, not perfect), how agencies are increasingly including mental health benefits in surrogacy contracts, and why even experienced surrogates benefit from professional facilitation of difficult conversations. Whether you're considering becoming a surrogate, seeking to build your family through surrogacy, or simply curious about this unique journey, this conversation offers invaluable perspective on the human elements that make surrogacy journeys successful beyond the medical procedures.Subscribe to hear more conversations that bring transparency and education to the world of surrogacy. Meet Keri Croft, an infertility, child loss and surrogacy advocate who went through 16 years of infertility. On today's ep, Keri tells Ali all about her family building journey, which includes having her son, and also the devastating loss of her first girl, Angel, who was missing part of her cerebellum. "It was a horrible, horrible decision to have to make, and I wouldn't wish it on anybody," Keri says of undergoing a TFMR (Termination for Medical Reasons). Keri talks about how a balanced translocation affected their fertility journey, and also how she navigated IUI and IVF. "I tried everything. And of course that takes a toll on your marriage. It was an absolute clusterfuck," she says. Keri also shares how she lost two other girls, Hope and Jade, how she and her husband decided to pursue surrogacy, and launching her workshop, Find Your Dream Surrogate. "After years of fertility treatments, loss, and heartbreak, I eventually had my daughter via a surrogate — a journey I navigated completely independently, without an agency," Keri says. "It was beautiful and brutal and eye-opening in ways I never expected. When it was all said and done, I kept thinking: Why the hell isn't there a better roadmap for this? So I built one."For more, go to www.kericroft.comFollow on IG: @thekericroftshowTOPICS COVERED IN THIS EPISODE: Pregnancy; TFMR; trying to conceive; pregnancy loss; baby loss; IVF; IUI; balanced translocation; surrogacy; ART; EPISODE SPONSORS: BEAUTIFUL BIRD AND WORK OF ARTAli's Children's Book Series about IVF, IUI and Family Building Through Assisted Reproductive Technology https://www.infertileafgroup.com/booksThe latest book in the Work of ART series, “Beautiful Bird” tells the story of three parents, one incredible boy and a family built with love—and a little bit of science.Pre-orders are available now! The government of Armenia has gone to war against one of the country's most powerful institutions – the Apostolic Church. National security police have gaoled a popular archbishop, Bagrat Galstanyan, claiming he was involved in a plot to overthrow the government. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has also demanded the resignation of the top cleric, accusing him of having a secret child. It's a high-risk move for an unpopular government, taking on the ancient church that many Armenians see as the embodiment of the nation. OLESYA VARTANYAN is an independent analyst and consultant based in neighbouring Georgia.Australia's Law Reform Commission is reviewing a patchwork of different state laws governing surrogacy. Earlier this year, the ABC reported that by 2032, the global surrogacy industry was set to reach $129 billion. But if it's financial boom for the baby business, what are the ethics of a practice that includes severing the connection between mother and child? Dr ERICA CERVINI has been reviewing the case in an essay for Eureka Street magazine. In what amounts to a small revolution in the Church of Latter-Day Saints, Mormon women are now permitted to reveal their shoulders, having been taught that bare upper arms were too raunchy. These changes come with the growing power of Mormon influencers on social media -- known loosely as “#momtok” – and a popular TV show, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. The reality show on Hulu follows eight influencers in Utah. Today, Ali is talking to Zach and Alexandra French, the founders of the nonprofit organization The Surrogacy Foundation, whose mission "isn't just to raise funds, but to propel surrogacy into the mainstream." Zach and Alexandra share their entire family building story, from how they met and got together to having their first child without Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). They talk about what happened when Alexandra found a lump in her breast, and how they navigated her cancer diagnosis and treatment. They also talk about Alexandra's double mastectomy, and how they pivoted to surrogacy after her surgery. "My doctor said if we wanted to expand our family, I could no longer carry. We would have to turn towards surrogacy--because if i carried another child, my cancer would return," Alexandra says. They talk about all of the intricacies of surrogacy, from finding a match to navigating the legal side, and share what it was like when their next baby was finally born. They also talk about creating the Surrogacy Foundation and how they've raised more than $500,000 so far to help families in need. "At The Surrogacy Foundation we don't just raise money; we help families every step of the way," they say. David Lat spent years climbing the legal ladder, clerking, working at Wachtell, joining the DOJ, before realizing that the most meaningful part of his career wasn't going to happen in a courtroom. Joining Chris Batz and Howard Rosenberg, David talks through the decisions that shaped his path, from writing a cheeky anonymous blog about federal judges to launching “Above the Law” and building one of the most influential voices in legal media. He reflects on the pressure to follow prestige, the pull of creative work, and the unexpected ways his early writing opened doors he didn't even know existed. A serious case of COVID-19 in 2020 forced him to pause and take stock. What would it look like to return to writing on his own terms? What parts of the legal world still felt worth exploring? Those questions led to “Original Jurisdiction,” a Substack newsletter where David now shares sharp, thoughtful takes on the profession he never fully left. Natalie Fleet is the Labour MP for Bolsover whose path into politics has been far from typical. From a very young age, teachers told her she was destined for university – something almost unheard of in her Nottingham mining town. But her future took a different turn, when at fifteen, she became pregnant by an older man. At the time she had thought they were in a relationship - but as she grew older, Natalie says she realised she had been a victim of grooming and statutory rape. She's now speaking out to give a voice to those she feels have been made to feel they should be silent, and joins Anita Rani in the studio. Only 3.1% of PREP users in England are women. That's Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, a drug that reduces the risk of being infected with HIV. Many women don't know that PREP exists, or don't consider themselves at risk. Yet women accounted for 30% of new HIV diagnoses in England in 2023. This week, the Elton John AIDS Foundation has launched pilot programmes to increase women's access to PREP. Anita was joined by Dr Jenny Whetham, Consultant and Joint Clinical Lead, Sexual Health and HIV Medicine, Brighton and Anne Aslett, CEO of the Elton John AIDS Foundation to discuss.Trisha Goddard rose to fame as a TV journalist. She was the first black TV presenter in Australia and is best known in the UK for her eponymous TV show which aired on ITV and Channel 5 in the late 90s and 2000s, earning her a reputation as the British Oprah. She joined Anita to talk about her career, appearing on Celebrity Big Brother and why she chose recently to go public with her diagnosis for stage 4 metastatic breast cancer.BBC journalist Sanchia Berg and fertility lawyer Beverley Addison joined Nuala McGovern to discuss the recent cases of older couples becoming parents via surrogacy.Comedian, actor and writer Rosie Jones joined Nuala to discuss her first sitcom, Pushers, which she stars in and co-wrote. She plays Emily in the Channel 4 show, who has very little left to lose after having her disability benefits cut when she loses her job - she finds herself building an illegal drugs empire. Emily isn't your average street-dealer though - she's sharp, funny, highly educated and has cerebral palsy. What better disguise could there be for criminal activity than to be entirely written off by society?Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Annette Wells Editor: Rebecca Myatt

The Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced a full national statutory inquiry into child sexual abuse perpetrated by gangs after previously dismissing calls for a public inquiry. This comes after he said he has read every single word of an independent report into child exploitation by Baroness Louise Casey and would accept her recommendation for a full investigation. Nuala McGovern discusses what's been announced with BBC Special Correspondent Judith Moritz and Maggie Oliver, who resigned from Greater Manchester Police in 2012 to publicly speak out against what she recognised as gross failures to safeguard victims of the scandal in Rochdale. She has recently had meetings with Baroness Casey and has taken a group of survivors to share their experiences with her.The BBC and the Arts and Humanities Research Board have selected six academics to be this year's New Generation Thinkers on Radio 4 and Historical Criminologist Stephanie Brown will be joining Woman's Hour. She talks to Nuala about her research into crime, punishment and policing and how society views women criminals.Lily Allen recently admitted that she ranks her friends in a recent edition of the BBC podcast Miss Me? The singer joked: 'I create lists of people who I like in order of how much I like them… I send that list to my assistant and ask her to schedule the time for me to have FaceTimes with them.' But joking apart, is it simply human nature to make a distinction between close friends and acquaintances, and everyone in between? Columnist for the iPaper Rebecca Reid and cultural historian Tiffany Watt-Smith join Nuala to discuss.BBC journalist Sanchia Berg and fertility lawyer Beverley Addison joins Nuala to discuss the recent cases of older couples becoming parents via surrogacy.Iris Mwanza started out as a corporate lawyer in both her native Zambia and then in the US. Set in Zambia in the early 1990s, it follows Grace Zulu, a rookie lawyer, whose first pro bono case is to help the 17-year-old Willbess Mulenga. It's been alleged that Willbess, who prefers the name Bessy, had sex with another man and he's been arrested for offences ‘against nature.' Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Emma Pearce
The More Sibyl Podcast Presents: 법 밖의 삶| The Legality of Surrogacy - The Grey Area We Didn't Know | Episode 19 (2025)Five beautiful episodes. Seven amazing guests and several deeply personal stories.Sùúrùgate has reached its final chapter, and I can't help but feel proud of the ground we've covered. We've peeled back the layers of infertility, parenthood, and the deeply intimate journey of surrogacy, giving voice to those often left out of the conversation. As we wrap this powerful series, we take a bold turn into a topic that's rarely discussed: the legal realities of surrogacy in Nigeria. In this must-listen episode, I'm joined by the brilliant Lawyer Gbenga Adebisi, who brings unmatched clarity to Nigeria's current surrogacy landscape, one that remains largely undefined by law. Gbenga walks us through the murky legal framework (or better put, the lack of one) and offers critical insight into why treating surrogacy as just a contract is not only misguided but potentially dangerous. His words surprised me, and they just might shift your perspective, too.We unpack the fundamental question: Is surrogacy even legal in Nigeria? The answer is not what most people think. Gbenga explains how the absence of federal legislation leaves all parties—intended parents, surrogates, and especially the children—exposed and unprotected. He also highlights the often-exploitative systems in place that leave surrogate mothers underserved, unsupported, and without recourse. If you've ever considered surrogacy, know someone who has, or simply care about protecting the most vulnerable in society, this episode is for you. You'll walk away with practical insight into how to navigate this complex terrain more responsibly, even in the absence of clear legal guidelines. But more than that, I hope this episode ignites something deeper—a call to advocate for comprehensive legal reform in Nigeria. Surrogacy should not operate in the shadows. Every child deserves legal clarity. Every surrogate deserves dignity. Every family deserves protection. So please, don't just listen—understand. Share this episode widely. Let's raise our voices and push for a future where surrogacy in Nigeria is guided not just by hope, but by justice.

Hey Heal Squad! In Part 2 of our powerful chat with digital creator and mom-of-one Rebecca Zamolo, we dive into the emotional aftermath that no one prepares you for. Rebecca gets honest about what it was like to finally get pregnant after years of IVF and surgery—only to be met with anxiety, grief, and PTSD instead of the joy she expected. From high-risk pregnancy fears to the moment she almost quit YouTube altogether, this episode explores what happens when your dream comes true… but healing still hasn't arrived. We also talk about miscarriage, the pressure to show up for millions online while breaking inside, and how she and her husband made the decision to grow their family via surrogacy. Rebecca shares what she's learned about letting go of control, navigating grief, and how to prepare emotionally for baby #2 when your heart's still healing from baby #1. This one's for anyone who's ever had to keep hoping, even when it hurts. HEALERS & HEAL LINERS: Healing after IVF takes more than a pregnancy. Even after a successful round, Rebecca still faced anxiety, grief, and PTSD from her previous loss. Emotional healing doesn't automatically follow physical outcomes—it requires space, support, and time. You don't have to “stay strong” all the time. Rebecca opens up about the pressure to be positive for others while silently struggling. She reminds us that giving yourself permission to not be okay is a crucial part of real healing. It's okay to reconsider your path. After years of chasing content creation success, Rebecca nearly walked away from YouTube. Her story shows that healing may require stepping back from what no longer aligns—even if it once did. -- HEAL SQUAD SOCIALS IG: https://www.instagram.com/healsquad/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@healsquadxmaria HEAL SQUAD RESOURCES: Heal Squad Website:https://www.healsquad.com/ Heal Squad x Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/HealSquad/membership Maria Menounos Website: https://www.mariamenounos.com My Curated Macy's Page: Shop My Macy's Storefront Prenuvo: Prenuvo.com/MARIA for $300 off Delete Me: https://bit.ly/43rkHwi code: SQUAD EMR-Tek Red Light: https://emr-tek.com/discount/Maria30 for 30% off Airbnb: https://www.airbnb.com/ Join In-Person Heal Retreat Waitlist! https://mariamenounos.myflodesk.com/heal-retreat-waitlist GUEST RESOURCES: Instagram Website TikTok YouTube Fertility Supplements Ostomy Secrets ABOUT MARIA MENOUNOS: Emmy Award-winning journalist, TV personality, actress, 2x NYT best-selling author, former pro-wrestler and brain tumor survivor, Maria Menounos' passion is to see others heal and to get better in all areas of life. In this episode, hosts Dr. Carrie Bedient from the Fertility Center of Las Vegas, Dr. Abby Eblen from Nashville Fertility Center, and Dr. Susan Hudson from Texas Fertility Center discuss the process of using a gestational carrier. They break down who might need a gestational carrier, the medical and legal aspects to consider, and how to navigate the journey from start to finish. The discussion also covers the difference between a traditional surrogate and a gestational carrier, explaining why modern surrogacy almost always involves a gestational carrier—someone who carries a pregnancy without a genetic connection to the baby. The docs also address common questions about choosing a carrier, working with an agency, and the emotional and financial aspects of the process. Whether you're considering surrogacy due to medical conditions, infertility, or other personal reasons, this episode provides valuable insights into how a gestational carrier can help individuals and couples grow their families.
