2. Messiah's Mission Isaiah 49:1 - 13 49:1 Listen, islands, to me; and listen, you peoples, from far: Yahweh has called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother has he made mention of my name: 49:2 and he has made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand, he has hidden me: and he has made me a polished shaft; in his quiver has he kept me close: 49:3 and he said to me, "You are my servant; Israel, in whom I will be glorified." 49:4 But I said, "I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely the justice due to me is with Yahweh, and my reward with my God." 49:5 Now says Yahweh who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, and that Israel be gathered to him (for I am honorable in the eyes of Yahweh, and my God has become my strength); 49:6 yes, he says, "It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give you for a light to the nations, that you may be my salvation to the end of the earth." 49:7 Thus says Yahweh, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despises, to him whom the nation abhors, to a servant of rulers: "Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall worship; because of Yahweh who is faithful, even the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you." 49:8 Thus says Yahweh, "In an acceptable time have I answered you, and in a day of salvation have I helped you; and I will preserve you, and give you for a covenant of the people, to raise up the land, to make them inherit the desolate heritage: 49:9 saying to those who are bound, ‘Come out!'; to those who are in darkness, ‘Show yourselves!' "They shall feed in the ways, and on all bare heights shall be their pasture. 49:10 They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun strike them: for he who has mercy on them will lead them, even by springs of water he will guide them. 49:11 I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted. 49:12 Behold, these shall come from far; and behold, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim." 49:13 Sing, heavens; and be joyful, earth; and break forth into singing, mountains: for Yahweh has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his afflicted. The Servant This is the second Servant song, and here the Servant Himself is speaking! We have no idea of his actual name but He does have a name (Isaiah 49:1)! In the first Servant song, with the dispensing of justice as part of His identity, the Servant is a King! But not just a King, something more as well! In this song, the Servant appears as if He is a prophet by the things He is saying. He was called Isaiah 49v1) just as Jeremiah was. The words he speak are as if a double-edged sword (Isaiah 49v2). Despite the opposition (Isaiah 49v4), He perseveres to gain the reward and to glorify God (Isaiah 49v3). And while we find His name is Israel! Not the nation of Israel itself, but as a person who embodies all that Israel was meant to be and do. This Servant would glorify God in all His ways. This servant is a Prophet who is also a King. This Servant is a perfect incarnation of God's light, covenant and salvation. The Servants Mission! In verse 5, the Servants mission is clear. Firstly the Servant will be a light to the nation of Israel and then to be a light to the nations. Isaiah 49:4 & 7 intimates the Servant will suffer for being who He is - despised and abhorred in slavish servitude. This Servant will be despised by the very people He has been sent to. But He will eventually be worshipped and honoured by rulers and kings. The Servant is on a mission to bring all people back into relationship with God who is "the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One". The exiled people will be restored to the land (Isaiah 49v8). People are described as being freed from captivity and have all manner of needs met (Isaiah 49v9-10)! The Servant will gather people back to God just as a Shepherd gathers his flock of sheep. And it wont just be a restored Israel, but all peoples from all lands and nations, hence Isaiah 49:12 "Behold, these shall come from far; and behold, these from the north and from the west;" This Servant King and Servant Prophet will shepherd people back into relationship with God and dispense God's justice throughout the whole world. That is all part of the Messiah's mission - to bring comfort to people and compassion on the afflicted (Isaiah 49:13). Then as if bursting from the seams with praise, we read "Sing, heavens; and be joyful, earth; and break forth into singing, mountains: for Yahweh has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his afflicted." Jesus as the Servant Paul quotes Isaiah 49:8 in 2 Corinthians 6:1-2 "As God's fellow workers we urge you not to receive God's grace in vain. For he says, "In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you." I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation." Paul here is saying to the Corinthians to grasp hold of God's offer of salvation, right now! Right now, because it is a time acceptable to God! But who is Paul talking about? Paul is talking about Jesus Christ "All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation." 2 Corinthians 5:18-19. Jesus Christ said of himself that he was the Good Shepherd (John 10) and the Light of the World rescuing those in darkness (John 8:12) - all images portrayed in this Servant Song of Isaiah 49v1-13.. Jesus came to save the lost (John 12:47) and to gather all people from all places back into relationship with God. Jesus Christ, the man who was despised, abhorred and rejected by his own people just as the Servant of Isaiah 49 was to be. Jesus Christ, who is honoured and worshipped, just as Isaiah 49 tells us the Servant would be. Jesus Christ, the Servant King and Prophet, who had as His mission statement Mark 10v45 - "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." The Loneliest Christmas - #9631

A Word With You

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 11, 2023

When our son was in college I think his favorite Christmas song was "I'll be Home for Christmas." That might be every college student's favorite song. He started counting the days, the hours, and the minutes until it was time to go home. But none of our kids have ever experienced anything like what my wife called her loneliest Christmas. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Loneliest Christmas." My wife was a college student in Chicago, and things were really hard for her family back home that year. Dad was a farmer, and the drought was really wiping him out financially. There was no money for her to go home that Christmas. You can imagine how she felt as her friends one by one said goodbye and headed out for their family Christmas at home. Eventually my wife was one of only about a dozen students left on the whole campus. Those were two very long weeks for a young woman who was used to mom and dad and grandma and grandpa, and sister and friends; all celebrating Christmas together. Actually, she would tear up when she thought about it. It really hurts when it's Christmas and you're not home! In a sense, many people have never really been home for Christmas. I mean, spiritually home. Oh we all have a homing instinct; this deep-down sense that there's something missing in our soul and we won't be home until we find it. The search for that missing piece of us takes us from relationship to relationship, from experience to experience, and that search inevitably leaves us still wondering where home is - for our heart. Our word for today from the Word of God is from Colossians 1:16, one of my favorite verses in the Bible, six words that say it all. Speaking of Jesus Christ: "All things were" - and here are the six words - "created by Him and for Him." You and I were created by Jesus. We were created for Jesus. And we're going to have a hole in our heart until we have Jesus. There was an article in a news magazine that said our lifestyle had "yielded only deeper hungers and lonelier nights." Wow! Well, God's Book reveals to us a startling fact that no person on earth can ever satisfy our loneliness. It's cosmic loneliness. We're away from God, and He's the only One who has the lasting love that we were made for. We're like my wife that lonely Christmas at college. Our heart is aching for home! Can you feel it? And God didn't leave us; we left Him. In the words of the Bible, "All of us have wandered away like sheep. Each of us has turned to his own way." That's maybe why the middle letter of sin is "I." We've basically said to God, "Hey, You run the universe. I'll run me, thank you." And that rebellion has cost us the one relationship that we can't live without and we dare not die without. Then comes Christmas. There's nothing we can do to erase the sin that keeps us from God, to be able to one day be with Him forever in heaven. So God sent His own Son into the world to pay the death penalty that sin requires. And God explains His motive this way, "God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life." You see, to believe in Him is to tell God you're pinning all your hopes on Jesus to forgive your sin and to give you eternal life. Because only the One who died for your sin can forgive it. And only the One who walked out of His grave can give you eternal life. A little boy was lost on a street corner in New York, and this policeman said, "Can you tell me your address or your phone number?" And the boy couldn't remember. Finally the little boy said, "But, sir, there's a big church next to my house, and there's a big cross on the top. And if you can get me to the cross, I can find my way home." So can you. If you can get yourself this Christmas to the cross where Jesus died for you, you can finally be home in that relationship with the One you were made by and made for. I would love to help you make that discovery and secure your relationship with Jesus and your place in heaven. Would you go to our website? That's what it's there for. It's there for a moment like this - ANewStory.com. Your new story could begin this Christmas season. Give yourself to Jesus, and you'll be home where your heart has wanted to be for so long - home for Christmas; home forever.

An old joke line was the good news bad news…it went like this I've got bad news…The bar in town burned down…  Good news they built a new one Bad news they don't sell beer Good news the beer is free Bad news, they don't have any glasses Good news they have buckets Bad news the buckets have holes in them Good news, the holes are at the top of the bucket   The bible speaks of calamity and hard times and even the end times as a way of God getting our attention. Not only the Christian but the non Christian. In fact scripture says that it will be the end times and the tribulation that will reawaken the jews to the gospel of Jesus Christ…   All in all the simplicity of this stands to conclude that the hard times that the bad times, that the worst times, that the things that don't kill us, do in fact make us stronger if we keep our faith in Christ. Look its as simple as understanding that the unforeseen problem leads you to new mindsets and break throughs. the Person who breaks your rule and steals your idea is the reason you came up with something better and even more unique. The extra weight on the bar makes it hard which is what makes you strong.    I love what Physicist John Archibald Wheeler says -and I quote - Behind it all is surely an idea so simple ,so beautiful, so compelling that when-in a decade, a century, or a millennium-we grasp it, we  will all say to each other, how could it have been otherwise? -Physicist John Archibald Wheeler so with this mindset is it any wonder God tells us to rejoice in times of suffering, in times of trouble, in times of distress… we are to rejoice in all things especially the hard things… because it is what brings out the best in us if we continue to trust God… What a bummer of a story if it is told that King Darius demanded the boys Shad Shack and Benny to bow or burn and he heated up the fire and they decide to bow… it wouldn't have the same life altering impact on the listener… and even if they had burned up to a pile of ashes.. still it would resound of faith over fire. What is the best God has for you? Well its just on the other side of what is bad for you. Embrace it and thank him… you will understand in the end.

This venture will take you there and as you read the word; know this; you also have gone, "AFTERCHRIST."Joseph N. Padilla was born in the small coal-mining town of Madrid, New Mexico where he lived till the age of 10. In 1941 he and his family relocated to Richmond, California. After graduating high school he fell in love with and married his late wife Alta of 52 years. After serving in the army overseas during the Korean War, he returned to his wife to start a family with three wonderful children. Joseph had many jobs till working and retiring as a mechanic of 25 years for the bay area rapid transit system. Joseph enjoys many artistic hobbies including oil painting, playing steel guitar and storytelling. With all his blessings and inspiration from the Lord, Joseph hopes you enjoy "Afterchrist."https://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Long-Walk-Joseph-Padilla/dp/B0B5KVD7T6https://proislepublishing.com/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/101322padilla.mp3  THE NAIL by Joseph PadillaHello, my name is Joseph N. Padilla. Author of the novel, "Adventure the Long Walk, Afterchrist", now comes "The Nail." The Nail is my effort to recreate some of the mystery and awe that must have surrounded those souls fortunate enough to have encountered the massage of our savior either during his lifetime or soon after. As the story begins, Joshua Saul is about as low in the social scale as anyone can be. A beggar at the gate called Beautiful in Jerusalem of 48 A.D. He is penniless, homeless, illiterate and, for all practical purposes, without faith. Yet, in the story's final scene, Saul stands preaching to an arena filled with scoffers of God, and in an act of divine inspiration, calls on the Holy Spirit to act so clearly that all within sight are made to believe in the power of Jesus Christ - All through the symbolic power of a simple nine-inch nail. Joshua Saul's life begins it's ascent toward spiritual fulfillment on Golgotha - literally. While resting against an old crucifixion log after burying his mother, he finds embedded in the ground an old nail. Strangely soothed by the. nail, he tucks it away in his girdle. Little does he know the profound changes this simple act will bring. Soon enough miracles of rebirth, healing, and spiritual redemption sprout around Saul. With an open heart and a willing soul, this simple young man is transformed into a vessel for the message of salvation brought to earth by Jesus Christ, and so doing fulfills his destiny. A tail of spiritual growth, adventure, and romance. The Nail opens a new window on the story of Christ and the transformation of his holy presence enacted on even the physical objects that he's come in tough with.https://www.amazon.com/Nail-Joseph-N-Padilla-ebook/dp/B0BF9YX6X5/ref=sr_1_2?qid=1665605139&refinements=p_27%3AJoseph+N+Padilla&s=books&sr=1-2&text=Joseph+N+Padillahttps://proislepublishing.com/
