In this episode, we reflect on the importance of giving thanks to the Lord for all He has done in both the beautiful and difficult moments of life. We talk about how practicing gratitude can change our perspective of reality and helps us recognize where God has been present even in moments we do not understand. We also name the fears that can sometimes keep us from giving thanks and discuss how gratitude becomes an act of surrender that opens us to God's steady, faithful presence. As a gift to you, we end today's episode by doing Lectio Divina with Psalm 34 and invite you into a time of prayer with us. How did the Lord accompany me this year? What do I need to let go of as we transition into a new liturgical year? What parts of my life am I afraid to give thanks for? Discussion Questions: What has the Lord taught you in this season? What was surprising this past year? What challenges and joys did you experience this year? Where are you resistant to give thanks? Quote to Ponder: "Gratitude is at the center of a life of faith. It sounds too simple to be true, but isn't that the sign of all deep truth: so simple we're tempted to dismiss it, and so hard, it is exactly what God uses to change our hard lives." (Ann Voskamp) Scripture for Lectio: "I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. Look to him, and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed. This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord, and was saved from every trouble. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him." Reconstructing Scripture: From Solo to Symphony While many of the ideas and practices handed down to us about God and the church may have shifted, there is something about Jesus we still find compellingly beautiful. Often, after letting go of what wasn't working, we struggle to find a way forward that shapes our lives to mirror the Beloved Community of God. Our Fall Vision series, Reconstructing Rhythms, continues with Christopher Mack gathering us to for the practice of Lectio divina as a way of stepping into God's Story, even as we find it infusing in our being. [Mark 12:28-34] Reflection How does the relational nature of this scripture conversation between Jesus and the scribe impact how you might reflect on scripture? Where do you experience the disconnect in your life from hearing scripture and embodying it? How might our experience of scripture be different if we try making a meal of it (formational) instead of reading it for helpful or inspiring bits (informational)? On this weeks podcast we are joined by Fr Frank Duhig to reflect on lectio divina - a ancient monastic way of prayerfully engaging and reflecting on scripture as the Word of God. Lectio divina, or "divine reading," is an ancient Christian prayer practice that involves slowly and contemplatively reading a short passage of scripture to foster a deeper communion with God. It typically follows four movements: reading the text (Lectio), reflecting on a word or phrase that stands out (Meditatio), responding with prayer (Oratio), and resting in God's presence (Contemplatio). The goal is to listen to God's word personally rather than to simply study a text. We have our regular run through the liturgical odds and ends of the week including the Pope's prayer intention for October (straight from his lips to your ears!) as well as our saints for the coming week.In part three, we have our regular sharing on the Sunday gospel where Fr Frank takes us through a brief application of lectio divina to this weeks Sunday gospel and to give an flavour of how to engage with it. WELCOMEWelcome to the Everyday Disciples podcast, where we discuss what it means to follow the way of Jesus in everything, everywhere, every day. This month, we are talking about what it means to be purposeful in prayer.WHAT IS PRAYEROur English word prayer derives from the Latin word precarious, which is fitting since we tend to most often pray in the precarious moments of life. But it is not just the precarious moments that cause us to pray. It is also those moments of wonder and awe that move us toward our Creator. A FEW FORMS OF PRAYERLiturgical - Wrote prayers such as scripture or written prayers passed through generations.Intercession - Praying on behalf of another person or for another person.Tongues/Praying in the Spirit - A gift of the Holy Spirit that we are directed has a time and place to be used (1 Cor.14:27).Worship (music or otherwise) - Adoration, confession, supplication, thanksgiving.Prophetic - Praying out what the Lord is speaking to you for someone else or people groups. WHAT WAS JESUS PATTERN OF PRAYER?Jesus modeled patterns and practices of prayer by prioritizing it in his life:At His baptism, He was praying (Luke 3:21-22)In the midst of popularity, He would withdraw and pray (Luke 5:16)Before major decisions, he would prayer, like when calling the disciples. (Luke 6:12)In times with his disciples, He prayed. (Luke 9:18)He would take close disciples away with Him to pray (Luke 9:28)Before Jesus was betrayed, He was praying (Luke 22:39-41)As Jesus was praying, His disciples asked Him to teach them to pray. We begin by recapping this year's seminary basketball tournament and deciding whether or not Fr. Garett is the right coach for the future of the St. Joseph Joey's basketball program. Then we share our reflections on a powerful passage from the Gospel of John recounting the Risen Lord's appearance to the disciples on the shore of the sea.
We're all here! It's not easy getting us all in the same room these days, with schedules, work, wildfires, and Brock going to Disneyland. But we did it. And we had a great conversation about our own spiritual rhythms and practices. It's not easy staying in tune with God when the world is in chaos and our lives are full of demands. But it's also not optional. How else will we survive these troubled times, and pass on healthy spiritual lives to our students? The goal: To be able to tell students, “Watch me, and do as I do.”Mentioned in this episode:Lectio 365https://www.24-7prayer.com/resource/lectio-365/Bible in One Year https://bibleinoneyear.orgDallas Willard Abraham Heschel DisneylandGive us a 5-star review on iTunes.https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/youth-ministry-sherpas-coast-to-coast/id1333665959We are proud members of the Download Youth Ministry Podcast Network https://www.downloadyouthministry.com Watch us on YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/@youthministrysherpasC2C Follow us on Instagram!Email us at youthministrysherpas@gmail.com
Send us a textHave you ever felt like life is too noisy to hear God's voice? Have you wondered what you would feel if you slowed down, embraced the quiet, and deepened your relationship with God? In today's episode, Dr. Elaina Barron and Angie Elkins are diving into the contemplative life—what it means to truly be still and know that He is God. We'll explore practices like Lectio Divina, sharing resources such as John Mark Comer's Practicing the Way and the app Lectio 365 to help us embrace stillness and intentionality in our spiritual walk. Angie and Elaina delve into the concept of Holy Leisure—creating sacred moments to sit with God and receive His love. You'll hear personal stories and reflections of Elaina and Angie's own journey of resistance to this type of prayer and the freedom found in releasing control. This episode is an invitation to slow down, seek God's presence, and experience the sanctifying beauty of rest in Him. Together, let's uncover practical ways to create Holy Leisure in our lives, let go of control, and experience the transformative power of simply being in His presence. In this week's episode, we reflect on suffering and love. We all have deep and tender places in our hearts where we suffer. Sometimes we feel alone in these sorrows and because of this, turn inwards into our pain. But the reality is, we are never alone in our suffering; God is always with us. We also reflect on fear in suffering, suffering in isolation vs suffering in communion, and how to allow God's light to shine into these sorrowful places. Journal Questions: What suffering am I running from? Take some time to identify your current fears. How can you let these fears bring you into an encounter with Love Himself? Do I have a friend I can invite into my suffering? How can I be present to her suffering as well? How has Jesus transformed injury into compassion in my life? Discussion Questions: Are you suffering in communion or in isolation? How can you suffer more like Jesus in this season? What habits in your spiritual toolbox protect your heart in moments of suffering and desolation? How can you love well when your heart is broken? Quote to Ponder: “What really hurts is not so much suffering itself as the fear of suffering. If welcomed, trustingly and peacefully, suffering makes us grow. It matures and trains us, purifies us, teaches us to love unselfishly, makes us poor in heart, humble, gentle and compassionate toward our neighbor. Fear of suffering, on the other hand, hardens us in self protective defensive attitudes and often leads us to make irrational choices with disastrous consequences.” (Interior Freedom, Fr. Jacques Philippe) Scripture for Lectio: “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8) Sponsor - Laura-Anne: The world wants you to believe that marriage is little more than an exchange of “I do.” But this Sacrament is worth preparing for—and commemorating—with intention.
