Bill welcomes debut novelist Joan Dempsey to the show. Joan has had her short fiction published in numerous journals and magazines, including The Criterion Review and Plentitude magazine, and is a writing instructor sought-after public speaker. She is also the author of This Is How It Begins, a novel that was described by Forward as "an extraordinarily pertinent novel dripping in suspense and powerful scenes of political discourse." Don't miss it!
Hey there word nerds! Today I am delighted to have award-winning author Joan Dempsey on the show! Joan’s writing has been published in numerous places including The Adirondack Review and Alligator Juniper, and she is the author of This is How it Begins. For this fascinating novel, that is a mix of literary fiction and mystery, she received a significant research grant from the Elizabeth George Foundation which took her to Warsaw for a month (no, she doesn't speak Polish), and to Washington, D.C. for ten days, to study in the archives at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. Listen in as we discuss the multiple layers of This is How is Begins, and get some of Joan’s best writing techniques for juggling plot and characters. In this episode Joan and I discuss: Avoiding the caricature, finding your way into every character’s head. Using omniscient POV in contemporary fiction the right way. Staying neutral, how to keep from steering your readers to any one opinion. Balancing the interplay between characters and plot. Method writing, and other craft techniques from Joan to get to the heart of your story. Plus, Joan’s #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes: DIYMFA.com/181

Joan Dempsey is a writer and teacher who provides developmental editing advice to writers. She also offers several online courses that focus on teaching you how to revise your work. In this episode we talk about why the process of revising your writing is just as creative as the process of writing your first draft. Joan also shares some of the most common writing mistakes she sees many writers make, and offers insight into how to fix them. Joan also talks about her writing shed, the place where she does her writing and teaching. It’s actually a renovated chicken coop! It’s a gorgeous writing space she designed herself, and it’s lined with ceiling to floor book shelves that will make any book lover envious. I’ve included some photos of her writing shed in the show notes to this episode, along with links to Joan’s website, over at writewithimpact.com/episode43 . Before we get started, just a quick announcement: I’ve started to write a column for inc.com. My first article covers some of the most common writing mistakes I see people make. You can check out that article and other pieces I’m publishing there on my author page on inc.com. Just go to writewithimpact.com/inc
It can be a lifelong process to understand what makes each of us thrive as individuals, and how to create personal environments that foster our best selves. Today we speak with science commentator Hannah Holmes about her book Quirk: Brain Science Makes Sense of Your Peculiar Personality. We also explore the idea of creative space with Joan Dempsey, a writer and teacher who works out of a converted chicken coop known as “The Shed,” in the back yard of her home in New Gloucester. https://www.themainemag.com/radio/2015/09/personality-place-209/
Besides having one of the best writer’s websites I’ve ever seen, Joan Dempsey has successfully merged the craft she loves with a business model that helps others reach their writing goals. On March 8 at 6 PM EST, she joins me on the Behind the Prose Radio Show to tell us how she lives the literary life oh-so-well. There are things I want to know like: what is a "writing shed” and how does one get one? How do writers decide which genre to focus on? And can you really teach an old writer dog new cut-clutter-from-your sentences-tricks? Besides delving into her original course, Improve Your Writing: Ten Essential Tools for Streamlining Your Sentences, we’ll focus on the craft of her short story, “Wild Swan” which appeared in The Adirondack Review. Joan will take your questions live on the air via my studio call-in phone number 347-857-2225. Tweet your questions or SKYPE in by clicking the button on the live show! #noexcuses Let's listen, learn, and write!
By 2030, no country is likely to be a globally hegemonic power, and four megatrends will have shaped international relations: accelerated individual empowerment; the continued rebalancing of the (economic) world; novel and diverging demographic patterns; and scarcity and uncertainty in global resources. Multinational companies — as well as multilateral organizations (World Bank, IMF) and NGOs — are growing in size and influence, operating beyond country borders. This has been true for the last 20 years, but what is coming for the next 20? What are both business and government doing to prepare for this new world? How are these megatrends manifesting themselves in the world today? Zein Abdalla, Nicholas Burns, Mitch Barns, Joan Dempsey, Dalia Mogahed
In this political climate, one might presume lack of consensus on an always “hot” political issue: defense spending. In fact, a striking bipartisan consensus exists today across the think-tank community on the need for Pentagon and congressional leaders to address the growing imbalances within the defense budget that threaten the health and long-term viability of America's volunteer military. Speakers: Michèle Fluornoy, Joan Dempsey
Anne Mosle, Melissa L. Bradley, Joan Dempsey, Michel Martin: It’s time to harness the momentum of lessons learned globally about the power of investing in women and apply to the United States. What is the economic power of American women, and how can investing in them alter our social landscape?
