Happy Friday! Enjoy the last day of the workweek with Caleb and returning guest Jon Everist. Well. Here we go! It's 2024. And while that is, on its own, a wild statement, it is a true one. With the new year I wanted to push forward in several different ways for NerdyBits and myself. So, I am starting a new mini podcast series titled "On Playing With" starting tomorrow. The series will focus on the dynamics of playing games with different groups of people in my life, how those dynamics shift, and how the experience changes as a result. I am also conducting several interviews in the coming weeks. We will see the return of Joe Erskine and Jon Everist, as well as a few more. The stream is returning to Mondays and Wednesdays. And finally, I am pushing the Patreon again. Composer Jon Everist's music for The Lamplighters League is a great blend of noir and adventure. The soundtrack paints such a perfect picture of the vibe of the game (which is a turn-based tactics game). So many wonderful solos and soloists, with an orchestra recorded live at Abbey Road Studios, and they all sound fantastic! Also, I swear I know what a trombone sounds like. Or I used to think I did. TSAP S03E18 Sam speaks with composer, Jon Everist, about his journey into music composition, his recent work on Disintegration, the sources of his inspiration and more! Jon On the Disintegration Score: "I wanted to capture both the fragility and hopefulness of the human spirit," explains composer Jon Everist. "The solo piano motif propels the piece to a crescendo with the rest of the orchestra where our heroic theme is revealed, representing the power and ingenuity of humanity coming together for a common good. This is the theme of the resistance." "Jon Everist is an American video game and film composer from Seattle, Washington. He first gained notoriety with his award-winning score for Shadowrun: Hong Kong (2015) and continues to work with longtime collaborator Harebrained Schemes and Paradox Interactive to produce soundtracks for their games. His most recent score for BATTLETECH (2018) was nominated for "Best Video Game Score of 2018" at the 34th Annual ASCAP Screen Music Awards and won honors at the 2019 Jerry Goldsmith Awards for Best Video Game Score." Disintegration, created by V1 Interactive and Private Division, is set 150 years into the future when much of humanity has been persuaded to upload their personalities and what makes them unique to cloud storage to reduce the stress on Earth's resources. An evil entity, the Rayonne, has taken control of the cloud, but a small band of rebels aims to take the Rayonne down and reboot humanity. Jon Everist told me he had an amazingly fun experience incorporating big themes of technology, humanity and rebellion into his soundtrack. The rebels are led by reluctant hero Romer Sholes, whose character also provided a lot of inspiration for Jon to give his a unique musical identity. Jon made the most of the music budget he had, and worked with the renowned Budapest Scoring Orchestra and orchestrator Brendon Williams. The soundtrack is available on Jon's Bandcamp page. Speculative futuristic war. Speculative futuristic war never changes. Welcome to "Battle" week, in which Video Game Grooves brings the fight to you with a couple of fighty soundtracks that sound nothing alike but share at least one thing in common: circularity. Meaning vinyl. Yes it's too clever, let's move on. This week we are joined by Jacob Chase of the VGM WAX blog, which recently celebrated its first anniversary covering a more literate form of video game music on vinyl record. We recommend you swing by and check it out! Jacob and Jeremy focus on the dynamic musical score for Battletech, the Harebrained Schemes strategy game based on the iconic tabletop franchise. The unorthodox-but-appropriate musical stylings of Jon Everist underscore the futuristic-yet-feudal storylines while still capturing the flavor of giant stompy 'mechs shooting each other on far-flung worlds, and we highlight a couple of selections to illustrate that. Anthony is excited about Battle Garegga, from Limited Run Games. This vertical shooter lies at an interesting nexus point for the arcade shooter genre, and the complex musical layers of its soundtrack are a great late-era jam. Then we put Jacob in the hot seat to talk about the story behind VGM WAX, and we have a good old discussion about the process of "coverage" of video game music on record. How do we approach it, what drives us in our respective media, and what is it that we hope to share and give to others? So come listen and be shared with and given to.

You may have noticed that we've been digging BattleTech around here. Between Rob Zacny's review earlier today and last Friday's livestream, giant robots have very clearly been very much on our minds. You'll be able to hear more of my thoughts on the game on Friday's episode of Waypoint Radio, which features Rob Zacny and I doing a huge deep dive into the game. Suffice to say, I love it.Which is why I jumped at the chance to chat with the game's composer, Jon Everist, and to exclusively feature the above behind-the-scenes look at his process for composing and recording the game's incredible score. In the past, the games of the BattleTech universe (titles like MechAssault and MechWarrior 2) relied on wailing metal guitars to sell a the fantasy of the mech piloting. But in BattleTech, Everist offers a breadth of musical language to communicate a sense of triumph, hardship, and adventure. The game sounds sparse in some moments, with analog synths and distorted strings providing nearly-ambient backing to your life as a mercenary. And in other moments, when the galactic politicking comes to a hard point, the orchestra swells to support the weight of the moment. When you're done listening, go read Rob's review right here, check out our exclusive behind-the-scenes video here, and check out the soundtrack over at Jon Everist's Bandcamp or on Spotify. Morte permanente, armadilha mortal, amigos... argh.
